Missing Chapter Markers

Where are my chapter markers!
I am in DVDSP linking buttons to tracks and marker points within tracks and suddenly find that there are no chapter markers!
OK could be me, check FCP, yep there are chapter markers, check the exported, by ref, file in QT, yes the markers are there. Check in Compressor, default setting,
"DVD: Best quality 150mins", no markers, check settings, the should be there, what is going on!
This is going to cost me hours!
Using compressor 3.0.4

No I chose DVDSP Markers as I wanted compression as well as chapters.
The exported file does contain the markers, they are visible within Quicktime, for some reason Compressor is not seeing them. This is not a one off either. I exported 152 files individually as many of them had markers and am aware of the fact that a batch export from FCP drops the markers.
(Apple when will you do something about this bug in batch export?)

  • Missing chapter markers when I share my iMovie

I want to take an iMovie and transfer it to DVD Studio Pro 3. When I share my iMovie as a DV file, it imports as one large chapter into DVD SP3. The chapter markers are missing. I used to be able to do this prior to upgrading to iMovie HD. Is it still possible?
I also noticed that I used to see the chapter markers in Quicktime when I shared my iMovie, but now with QT 7 Pro and iMovie HD, the chapter markers have disappeared.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

  • Missing Chapter Markers from Final Cut Express

I have created DVDs with chapters using iMovie and iDVD. No problems. Now I have upgraded to Final Cut Express HD, and I cannot get iDVD to see its chapter markers.
I have followed the Knowledge Base article to the letter. I was careful to have nothing selected in the time line when applying markers. Following hints in this forum I have tried exporting either Chapter Markers or FCP Markers. I have tried exporting the Quicktime movie self contained or not. I have tried restarting Final Cut Express, which helped when other FCX features locked up after long sessions.
I'm stuck. Can anyone suggest something else to try?

    Hi Al Q,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
    Suggestion,two things to check:
Open the exported QuickTime movie in QT Player, do you see the chapter markers (a pop-up menu below the viewer)? If it is, then the export from FCE is okay, otherwise, something is still not correct in FCE.
Check the iDVD's Preferences, is the "automatically create scene selection menus" enabled?

  • Converting NTSC to PAL with chapter markers

    Hey guys,
I have just a quick question.
I am making a home made video. I did all the editing in FCP and made a great DVD in iDVD. I would like to do the same thing in PAL format so I can send it to my parents in Europe. My original footage is in NTSC. I did my own research and tried using compressor to change format to PAL.
I tried several different settings (PAL DV, Mpeg 2 PAL) but the outcome movie is always missing chapter markers.
I also tried to import the PAL movie (after conversion in Compressor) to FCP and added chapter markers but did not work.
Does anybody know how to convert the format from NTSC to PAL and keep the chapter markers at the same time? I would like to mantain as high quality as possible.
    Thanks for your help.

Well, this seemed to work. However, being completely new to converting to PAL, I was surprised to see the "jumpiness" that goes along with the frame rate drop. Looking at it taxes the eyes as it seems like its dropping frames every so often. I realize, through more research that this is due to the 25 FPS nature of PAL plus the fact that I'm converting and not just authoring from PAL material. Having said this, is there a tried and true way of "smoothing" this jumpiness that anyone would share?
A friend of mine suggested that when I place the file into DVDSP, I choose the TOP field in the encoding tab, prior to burning the disk. In the past I have always left the FIELD menu set at Auto. He says that setting it to TOP might help a little.
He also told me that a lot of the software based converters don't do the best of jobs. Although acceptable results may come from tweaking the settings, the best way to convert NTSC to PAL (with the most pleasing results) is by using a very high end converter (not a computer). Although you have to weigh out the circumstances such as how many disks will eventually be converted compared to available budget, is it worth spending a little extra for a master that will ultimately see 1,000 copies?
I'm planning on showing my client the burn with field dominance set to TOP, on Monday. Hopefully she'll find it acceptable and I'll be able to move on with this project. Thanks for all the help!

  • Chapter markers FCP iDVD5

I exported from FCP via Quicktime Conversion to preserve 16:9 aspect. The exported sequence was used in iDVD5 to burn a dvd and everything was fine except for missing chapter markers which were correctly incorporated in the FCP sequence. Was there
anything in the export process that might have upset this? Any suggestions gratefully received.

Yes, it does. You're not doing it correctly. People have been doing this for a decade. I don't think you're the first person to make an anamorphic DVD in iDVD.
You can also in Movie Properties for the whole file, not the video track, in Presentation check the aperture and make it clean, but that depends on the QT version you're using. Or as the page describes you can change the video track to 1024x576 with preserve aspect ratio unchecked.
It might help to know what version of the software you're using. I suspect it's all pretty dated based on the computer and the OS you're running.

  • ITunes chapter markers missing (?)

I have several audiobooks which show chapter markers on my iPod. The FAQ and online documentation says that I should see an icon for selecting chapters in the display area of iTunes, but I don't see it. Also, "forward" goes to the next audiobook instead of the next chapter. Can someone either tell me what I'm looking for (exactly where, looks like what, etc.) or confirm that it's missing?
    Macintosh, iTunes 5.0.1.
    Thanks!
    Doug

It appears only when you are playing a file with chapters. It is a small squarish button to the left of the search box in iTunes 5.0.1, there is a little menu icon with an up/down arrow on the right. Click on it and you see each chapter.
I would be curious to know if you can play beyond chapter 1. I can't in 5.0.1 (and had no problems with the same files in iTunes 4.9 or when playing the files directly in the current version of Quicktime)

  • Missing with chapter markers after Export Using QuickTime Conversion

I have my FCE workflow setup as follows:
I create the sequences using relatively large video source files, in Apple Intermediate Codec (AIC).
Then, I use Export -> Using QuickTime Conversion to H.264 Codec, but my chapter markers are lost.
If I use Export -> QuickTime Movie, the chapter markers are preserved, but the codec is still AIC.
I need a compressed file with chapter markers. What am I missing?

One more time: "Where are you looking at the exported file? After making a DVD or somewhere else?"
Can you answer this for me? How are you looking at this material? Off the DVD you've burned? Is that what you're saying? Comparing the QuickTime Movie export to a DVD burned from a PhotoJPEG export? Or are you playing it from the computer to HDMI? If so are you using the QuickTime player? Is the QT player set to high quality playback? Yes, PhotoJPEG (not JPEG Photo) is a very large file especially at full quality. You probably don't need any more than 75% quality. I'd be very surprised if you say you can see the difference between 75% and 100%.
The length of the video is important not the size of the disc. iDVD's compression is fixed by the length of movie and the amount of content that has to be encoded.

  • GOP Structure Differs or Necessary Cell or Chapter Markers Missing?

    DVD Studio Pro 3.0.2
A small project with one track consisting of two video streams.
Both pieces of video are exactly the same length.
Both are excoded using the same preset in Compressor.
I set up the new preset using CLOSED GOP which the manual tells me is needed for multi-angle projects.
The average bitrate for one is 4.9Mbits the other is 5.0Mbits.
I'm using buttons in a graphic in the subtitle track to switch between V1 & V2.
The track has 3 chapter markers. One at the very start.
One approx 1 second in, and one approx one second from the end.
The subtitle sits between Chapter Markers 2 & 3. (Button Highlight Markers).
When I run it in the simulator I get:
"Warning: Illegal angle situation. Only the Main Video Angle will be simulated."
I click on "OK" and in the simulator it then works quiet well.
However when I try the build I get:
"Lounge-View01:Angle GOP Structure Differs. Necessary Cell or Chapter Markers may be missing"
Can anyone advise what may be going wrong?
I've done a search but cannot find a suitable solution.
(In preferences I have "Fix Invalid Makers On Build" on).
I've spent some time on this trying a few things but seem to be going around in circles.
    Thanks all.

    Thanks Drew.
I'd actually read a couple of those threads when I did my original searches.
Still I went back and read them again and something "clicked".
A post mentioned that if your FCP sequence had a cut, when you encode it with Compressor, Compressor will force a "i" frame. (Is this mentioned anywhere in any manual? I missed it if it was). It then occurred to me that one of the two sequences I was having trouble with had a single cut (edit) in it.
Which means the GOP order probably changed at this point resulting in the "GOP Structure Differs" error message.
To resolve this I exported both sequences from FCP as self contained Quicktime movies. These self contained files now no longer had any breaks or "cuts".
I put these into Compressor and re-encoded the MPEG2 files. I put the results into DSP and tried again. These re-encoded MPEG2 files made from the self contained QT files worked perfectly. No error messages at all.
I build a test project which wouldn't work in (Apples) DVD Player (not unexpected), but worked fine when burnt to a DVD+RW disc and tried in a free standing DVD player.
So when making a multi-angle project in DSP the best procedure appears to be:
    (1.) Complete your FCP sequences.
(2.) To remove any cuts or breaks in your FCP sequences, export the sequences as self contained MOV files.
(3.) Use the self contained MOV files when encoding with Compressor, as this will ensure matching GOP structures in the resulting MPEG2 files.
Now all I have to do is to get the overlay to sit properly on the screen .....

  • Chapter Markers missing via Compressor?

Hi y'all, Using the latest FCP Studio, I used the default Compressor setting for DVD best 90 minutes, and my chapter markers did not get exported. Any idea what the problem is, or how to recapture them without re-exporting from FCP? I can't find a way to export the text of the markers. I also read that markers on clips will not export, only from the timeline, but FCP would not let me add Chapter markers to the timeline. It is being ornery.

    Jefferis
You can read this tutorial about * Chapters and Compression Markers *.
FCP lets you add chapter markers in timeline; you must be doing something wrong. You can add the markers in Compressor too.
    Hope that helps !

  • Chapter markers missing in podcasts and audio books

With my new 5th gen iPod the chapter markers are gone from  both podcasts and audio books. Anyone able too tell me how you get them back?

Do the podcasts on your iPod also appear under the podcasts menu?
Unfortunately, it is perfectly normal for them to appear under artist and album on your iPod. The tags on the podcasts identify an artist and an album and they get added to those lists. Not sure why this is not reflected in iTunes.

  • How to add chapter markers for each file in a folder?

    Hello,
I have several image folders with up to 700 images per. I would like to drag & drop them into the timeline but I want to be able to use the chapter/arrow button on the DVD player remote to scroll through them.....like a videoscrapbook, per se.
Is there a setting that will allow me to drop them into the time line and automatically generate a chapter marker for each image, that will be read on export to DVDSP? Surely, there is something like this built in that I just have not yet found; I cannot believe the only alternative is to manually add 700 chapter markers per folder. And do they always go into the timeline in alphabetical order? Can that be prevented or altered?
Also, doesn't it seem strange there is no single-button option (I'm presuming here, since I have not found one) for adding a chapter marker; the '~' button adds a generic marker but you must 'edit' it and click 'chapter marker' - very time-consuming --- or am I missing something here, too? If so please enlighten me! I've experimented a lot but no luck.
    Many thanks!
    jf

I thought there was a folder size limitation on DVDSP - these folders have digital family photos on them and they are jam-packed; 600, 700, whatever. And there are several of them. I guess I thought putting them in FCP was the only way to avoid the limitation - if there is one.
I'll try putting them straight into DVDSP and see what happens. Thanks!

  • Batch export and chapter markers

Am I missing something? I can find no way to batch export clips and set the option to export chapter markers. Anyone able to do this?
    Thanks,
    Bob

That's correct. Batch export uses the QuickTime Conversion module which does not support chapter markers.

  • Why won't chapter markers in FCP5 import to idvd6?

I recently imported a video project that I created in FCP5 into iDVD6 for DVD authoring. I put chapter markers in the video project with the idea that IDVD6 would create the sub menus. For some reason they are not showing up. I've checked the appropriate boxes in preferances but no luck. Am I missing something? Or is this a bug that Apple needs to fix?
Has anyone else had a problem or a fix for this? Please let me know.

I have also been tearing hair out with similar problems. Found some info similar to those given above. Making sure that chapter markers are at least 2 seconds away from transistions and also away from clip ends( 1second I think is min here). finally after much resaving it all worked as it should.
Now doing seperate project and its here we go again. Have now got chapter markers to work fine but now the clips which are 16:9 are showing up as 4:3 but only when you "play movie" or preview scenes. The menu's look fine.
Something very weird is going on.
The real pain is its soooooo easy when it works..............

  • FCP 7 Chapter Markers

I have a ProRes 422 clip (captured from Canon XHA1S - HDV) when I 'M' and 'M' again to place a marker and description including ticking the 'Chapter Marker' button it all works. I then export from FCP using current settings and export all markers. The produced .MOV file has the chapter markers ok( I can see them in Quicktime player) but when I workflow thro Compressor (to get my .ac3 and .mv2 files) into DVDPro the chapter markers are gone. I know I have left out a lot of detail about settings in Compressor but in effect I select the Make DVD template option with no changes but can you spot anything obvious I am missing or do you need mor info to tell .. if so when else would help you determine the cause. Many thanks in advance !
    Jim

I'm still learning Final Cut too, so I hope I'm not misinforming you, but I've had that problem before and it was b/c the markers were on the clips themselves or on the audio track vs. on the timeline. When you hit "M" for marker make sure nothing is selected so the marker goes onto the timeline itself. You should see them along the top under the render bars, not within the clips or audio.
I think that might be your issue. I've had so many people on here helping me, I feel inclinded to try to help others, but not sure I'm in that category yet

  • Premiere CC Chapter markers not frame accurate in Encore CS6

So I just made a video with 30 chapter markers at distinct cuts in the timeline using Premiere CC and exported that to an MPEG-2 video as I would in CS6. After importing the MPEG-2 file into Encore CS6 and making a New Timeline the Chapter Markers do show up but they are now all 3-15 frames early per chapter which also means none of the chapter thumbnails are going to be accurate. It's easy to check this with both programs just compare the timecode number at each chapter point in the timeline of Premiere CC then Encore CS6.
Also noticed that the Add Chapter Marker tool that was in the Premiere CS6 timeline is missing in CC, just the Add Marker tool is there now. Couldn't find a way to add the Add Chapter Marker tool to the timeline group of tools.

The .xmpses file contains the chapter information, at least for CS6 and earlier.  You can test this by removing that file before importing into Encore.  You won't get any chapters.
Not sure where Adobe is putting chapter data for CC, but it must be somewhere because the chapters are there.
So I ran two tests, one from CS6 and one from CC7.  In both cases I added three chapter marks, two where I knew there would not be an I-frame in the exported .m2v, and one where there would be.  Both exports came into Encore with the chapter makers right where I put them, which surprises me because there were no I-frames at two of those points and Encore did not 'legalize' them as I'm accustomed to with my production machine.  (Ran this test on my personal machine.)  I could move the markers off those points, but could not put them back because, like I said, the DVD spec only allows them on I-frames.
I did not burn to test whether or not Encore would move the chapters that weren't on I-frames.  I'd be confused if it didn't, though.
