Missing characters when opening MIF8 in FM8 (p273)

Something our translation vendor just discovered.
Since it may have major ramifications for FM users who do alot of translations, we choose to post the bug report here too. More problems in CJK, Russian and Eastern European languages and less in Western European languages.
Concise problem statement:
Opening edited (translated) MIF files in FrameMaker 8 causes some of the extended characters disappear. Text containing extended characters for different languages are missing characters in FrameMaker, although all characters are present in the MIF file. The missing characters follow no particular pattern, most of the time all characters are there. (If you need more example texts in other languages to try this on, please contact me.)
Steps to reproduce bug:
1. Create a new FM file and enter "Some text".
2. Save the file as MIF (version eight).
3. Open the saved MIF file in any text Unicode-enabled editor.
4. Replace <String `Some text'> with <String `Ce produit est protégé par des brevets, des brevets de conception, des brevets en instance ou des brevets de conception en instance. Veuillez consulter la liste complète dans le manuel de référence sur CD-ROM.'>
5. Save the edited MIF file.
6. Open the MIF file in FrameMaker
Results
The word référence is missing characters, the text says "rfrence".
Expected results
All characters entered in the MIF file should appear correctly when the MIF file is opened in FrameMaker.

You are correct. The text between the tags is, I see now, a mistake on my side when quoting the vendor's report. Here is the bug report as it was posted to Adobe:

I am not in the office at the moment and don't have access to FM8 until tomorrow but can you do a test on your side with your text to see if the problem persists?
Two different vendors using two fundamentally different translation tools and workflows report the same type of errors, so I would be surprised if this is not a true bug.
But I may be wrong.

The activated fonts are not the same version as those in the PDF. If you use Type>Find Font and replace the fonts with ones from your computer does it work?

Missing worksheet when opening in EXCEL 2013

Hi,
I had an output from our existing ERP system with file type as XLS.
Currently, if open in EXCEL 2010, I am able to view the workbook with multiple sheet.
However, now, in EXCEL 2013, I cannot geth the same result. I get only to view 1 sheet with 1 sheet missing from the open workbook.
Why is this happeneing? No problem in EXCEL 2010.

PDF exported from InDesign missing background when opened in Illustrator

Hello, I am having a bit of a frustrating problem.
I'm working on graphics for a large project, and I have to get some of my files from InDesign into Illustrator (they are both CS5) for our printer.
I would have normally designed them in Illustrator but ALL my graphics are in InDesign and we just found out once we started on production that he needs AI and needs our trim path set up for our irregular shapes.
For MOST of the documents, its been pretty easy (exporting to PDF > opening in illustrator and making a cut path > saving as AI) however I have this one file that is making me lose my mind.
When I export it as PDF, it opens perfectly and looks normal in acrobat, and I also check it out in preview as well. The background shows up and everything. However when I open the PDF in illustrator it completely loses the background. I noticed it doing this before for a couple graphics, but I assumed that was because they had gradients drop shadows and transparencies and all that. This file has nothing weird except for a gradient grey background.
Help? I'm including some screenshots of whats happening in the hopes that you guys can help solve it.
So here we have me saving it, then opening it in Acrobat to check stuff out.
Now here is what happens when I open it in Illustrator:

Hi, Brie. I have been running into this issue for quite some time now. I also received the same response as you did. "Stop opening exported PDFs in Illustrator." This is an unsatisfactory answer for someone that works in the large format print industry that needs to preflight directly in the Illustrator program. I've done a ton of research and have been racking my brain for the last 2 years and have finally found sufficient workarounds for this issue. The downfall with these workarounds: all spot colors located in the gradients will convert to CMYK mixes. I'm still researching to see if there is a way to keep spot colors intact in these areas.
A little back story: InDesign is converting the gradients into something called NChannel. It enables more accurate handling of color blending by including additional dot gain and color mixing info. Both InDesign and Acrobat have the ability to display these elements whereas Illustrator, from what I’m finding, does not. Which is why we’re seeing gradient elements drop out when opened in Illustrator.
Workaround for CMYK Gradients
Open PDF exported from INDD in Acrobat
Go to Tools > Print Production > Convert Colors
Object Type: Smooth Shade (this tells Acrobat to hone in on Gradients only)
Color Type: DeviceCMYK
Check Embed next to Conversion Profile (should be SWOP)
Expand Document Colors on the right and Select DeviceCMYK in Color Spaces then click ok
Save the PDF
Workaround for 1 Spot Color in Gradients (Converts Spot Color located in Gradient to CMYK – all other Spots stay intact)
Open PDF exported from INDD in Acrobat
Go to Tools > Print Production > Convert Colors
Object Type: Smooth Shade (this tells Acrobat to hone in on Gradients only)
Color Type: Spot Color
Check Embed next to Conversion Profile (should be SWOP)
Expand Document Colors on the right and Select the Spot that is located in the Gradient in Color Spaces then click ok
Save the PDF
Workaround for 2 Spot Colors in Gradients (Converts Spot Colors located in Gradient to CMYK – all other Spots stay intact)

Mac users seeing jumbled characters when opening PDF

One of our company websites has multiple PDF downloads. PC users don’t have any problems opening PDFs from the site but Mac users seeing the following when they try to open a PDF from the site.

What causes this problem for a Mac user?

Unfortunately we can't download a sample PDF unless registerd but, if they are seeing %PDF-1.6 in the text of the PDF when opening, my guess would be that they aren't opening it with Reader.
That is the code that they are viewing. Reader wouldn't show that. They may be opening it in Word or some other text editor.

Missing keyframes when opening fla-file

I am working freelance on an animated show for children, animating characters in flash, and I have a problem that is driving me crazy.
I will try to explain it so it won't be too confusing..
This just happened on the file I am working on now, an animation of a character walking: The graphic symbol containing the legs had two keyframes in it (on frame 1 and 2) when I saved the file. When I reopened it, the legs had only keyframes on frame 1. When I check the swf I exported just before saving, the legs are fine.
Similar problems has happened many times now, sometimes keyframes are gone, other times they have turned blank, and on one occation graphic symbols had changed to empty movie clip symbols. The last swf exported has always been okay.
It has also happened when closing and immediately reopening, so I have ruled out sabotage..
I am using Flash 5.5, but the scenes are handed out by someone working in Flash 3 or 4. I import characters frome different documents into the scene. This often leads to many graphics symbols with the same name, but I make sure to put them in different folders, and also sometimes renaming the symbols. I suspected that could be the problem, but it doesn't seem to have been the case this time.
No one else on the team have experienced the same, though I am the only one working in Flash 5, if that matters.
Any clue, anyone?

The problem mentioned here is a very serious issue with Fash CS5 and Flash CS5.5 which we (a huge agency working a lot with Flash CS5) haven't found a solution for, yet.
The problem can be described as simple as the following:
You create an animation in some movieclip, save the file, close it, reopen it, and the movieclip is still there, but the animation is gone!!!!
Or: You change the animation in some movieclip, save the file, close it, reopen it, and the changed animation is gone, only the old state is in the movieclip.
Or: You have a movieclip containing only a simple PNG file. The PNG file is changed externally, you reimport it to the movieclip, deleting/overwriting the old one, save the file, close it, reopen it, and the old PNG is in there again, the changed one not even in the library or somewhere else.
Or: You have a movieclip containing only a static text field. You change the text in the textfield, save the file, close it, reopen it, and guess what, the old text is in there.
These problems occur totally randomly!!!! Sometimes they occur, sometimes they don't. Sometimes only one movieclip was affected, sometimes several ones. Sometimes it's only a small thing missing, like a text in a textfield, like a PNG that can be easily replaced, but often enough it's a whole timeline animation which we worked on for several hours.
This is almost like not being able to save at all!!!!
But hey Adobe, we already found a really decent workaround to avoid this problem your happy software confronts us with!!!
The trick is: don't close the file you're working on, don't close flash either, and don't turn off your computer over night. EVER! Leave everything open until the project is finished and payed for by the client.
Seriously, we're thinking about claiming our money back, aswell as the extra money payed to the electricity company for keeping the computers running all night. Let alone those hundreds of hours of work wasted for nothing but the excitement.
If you're interested, i can show you a screen capture of one of these problems occuring.
We're working mainly on MacOS 10.6 , but the problem seems to have occured on different operatings systems like Windows7 aswell.
And before you ask: it changes nothing if we save the file on a server or locally or create 10 backup-copies.
Why is this bug still out there if it's such a big thing!?

HT202879 How do I fix "the required index.xml file is missing?" when opening Pages documents?

I can't open any documents from my son's iPad. Error message: the required index.xml file is missing. How do I fix this error so that I can open his Pages documents? Before I ran the latest update as prompted when I opened Pages, I WAS able to open and view the document.
I did try restoring Pages using my Time Machine, but it still won't open the Pages document.
I have a brand new iMac that I just set up last week.
Son uses iPad at school, so we update when the school asks him to update. Will doublecheck his version of Pages but it should be pretty recent.
In general I don't like using Pages because it lacks a lot of the backwards / forwards compatibilty of Microsoft Word.
However, it is what my son uses with the iPad.
Most of the time I have to export his files as WORD files because we never seem to have compatible versions of Pages between the iPad and the desktop iMacs.
Where can I recommend that Apple improve its compatibility issues with Pages?
This week I am going to receive a new iPad at my school (I am a teacher) but I am 100% certain that it will not be compatible with the older version of Pages on my classroom iMac. I also avoid using Keynote for the same reason. I have 15 year old Power Points that I can still open, but I am hesitant to switch over to Keynote because I want to be able to open my files any time, any where.
Please advise.

ArialUnicodeMS is missing error when opening PDF

When I try to open PDF document I get this error:
"Cannot find or create the font 'ArialUnicodeMS'. Some characters my not display or print correctly"
The document then open in gibrish.

Odd message about missing file when opening Logic

Hi there
I've just done a fresh de novo install of Logic Studio 8 on my imac. When I open Logic Pro and select a new guitar tones project, before it opens I get a message in a new browser
"please locate missing 2.8sSpring_reverb.sdir" and at the bottom of the browser "audio file selected".
I don't know where this file is, if I click cancel I get a similar one for a plate reverb and then it opens.
Is there a way to rectify this? OSX 10.4.11 and a full install of all of Logic Studio plus main updates.

Font missing message when opening a fla file

When I open one fla file (tutorial) I am getting a message
Font mapping
the document contains one or more fonts currently unavailable on your sytem, the text will display in the font below

What does this mean? How and where to find the missing fonts, i even do not know their names

It means the .fla's author used a font that you don't have installed on your system. If you don't need to edit the file, just choose to use the default substitute and you'll be good to go. If you do need to edit, there are many free font sites where you could possibly find Danmark, otherwise you may need to purchase it.

Missing photos when opening multiple files into Photoshop from LR3.2

When I try to open multiple files (8+ maybe) from Lightroom 3.2 to edit in Photoshop CS5, almost always one or two photos does not open. This means I have to manually find out which photos are missing, and then reopen them.
Can anyone help me with this problem??

I have opened as many as 50 from external hard drive with LR 3.2 and Windows XP with no problem.
It takes a long time to bring in this many if they are 100MB tiffs. I had to go have coffee and come back later.
Are you sure you waited until it was finished?

3D Toolkit missing components when opening Solid Works assemblies

I am trying to open Solid Works sub assemblies (.sldasm) within the 3D toolkit, however I am finding component parts (.sldprt) and subassemblies (.sldasm) to be missing that were part of the original sub assembly. Now, I can open the same sub assembly within Acrobat 3D and it all loads correctly. The problem seems to be with the 3D toolkit, and this is what I need to use to export to Illustrator for our service manuals. I don't know if my 3D Toolkit software is misconfigured or there is an issue with the program? I just installed the application three weeks ago.

Well, I figured out a way to at least edit the assemblies. Our engineers name the parts in SolidWorks and I do lose that information, but I can get the assembly to open if I first import using PRC into Acrobat 3D, export as a VRML file, and then open the VRML file using the 3D toolkit. I can probably work around the file name problem, but at least I am up and running creating my tech docs.

Some of the required files are missing" error when opening iTunes 7.5

Grateful for some help. I'm getting this message when I try to open iTunes and Quicktime isn't working and there's an error 2093 appearing. I've found the help page on apple but it tells me to delete any iTunesSetup.exe files that I have so that I can reinstall.
This is where it's clear that I am clueless with this stuff - I've got two folders of iTunes files (iTunes and iTunes(2)) and there's heaps of files in there but I don't know which to delete (if any). I'd really appreciate any assistance anyone can give.

Missing fonts when opening iWeb.

When reopening iWeb after making a website succesfully the day before, all my 'fun' kind of fonts that came with my iMac (like Handwriting-Dakota; PortagolTCTT, etc.) are missing. I haven't deleted anything and don't understand how that's possible. Does anyone had the same problem and what is the best thing to do and how did that happend are my questions.

Yep, I had the same problem. It disappeared upgrading 1.0.1 but it seems to be a real bug. Maybe are you using a font manager like Suitcase or Font Agent Pro that could generate conflicts.
For now, it is fixed. So if the missing fonts pb goes on : restart your computer, create a new iWeb document (removing anywhere the iWeb folder from Home/Librairy/ApplicationSupport/iWeb) and try again : don't worry about the "Domain file", iWeb creates a new one when you launch it. The try again with that "virgin" document.
If nothing works, you can reinstall iWeb.

Missing image when opening PDF in Photoshop

I had a client send in an ad in pdf format. When you look at the preview on the screen all the images are there, however when you open it in photoshop one the words disappears when I try to open it in CMYK mode (that's how it was saved). However, when I open it in RGB mode all the words are there, then I can convert it to CMYK. I'm just trying to figure out why it didn't show up in CMYK but works in RGB mode. I'm running Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and CS 5. Client used ID to place the ad on template. Hopefully, I have given all the info needed to aid in finding a reason to this. Could it be that the image was not flatten? That's my guess is that the image was not flatten, but I would like someone to confirm that, or correct me.
