Missing Clips - "camera playing"?

Hi everyone,
When I try to import video using a Miglia Director's cut Scart there are portions of the import where the screen on Imovie goes blue and says "camera playing" - these portions are effectively then edited out of the final imported clip. So in effect there are gaps in my imported video.
I have played the same clips through my TV (i.e VCR connected to TV via scart) and there is good quality video in those 'gaps', so the tape itself is ok.
It's as if Imovie was ultrasensitive to any loss of quality and stops importing those bits. Anyone experienced this problem or got a solution?
Many thanks,
Richard

I don't know the Miglia DC Scart, but it certainly was the case that iMovie 2 was a good deal less "sensitive" than subsequent versions.
I tested this a while ago, and iMovie 3, for instance, wouldn't import anything except really stable material which had no glitches ..hence this bit of video starts where it does ..whereas iMovie 2 picks up poor frames well in advance of the good video.
"..there is good quality video in those 'gaps', so the tape itself is ok.." ..Not necessarily.
Some TVs, VCRs and monitors will 'repair' poor video on-the-fly, by reinserting a field or frame from the footage just preceding the poor quality, or by adjusting to poor timing signals, but iMovie doesn't do that, and tries to get the best grip it can on what's coming in. If there are poor 'timebase' signals - which often happens when playing VHS tapes - iMovie doesn't quite know where a new frame starts, and so 'drops' the picture.
"..got a solution?.." ..Some video devices - especially those which have two decks, for copying from one kind of tape to another ..e.g; VHS to DV - have a built in 'timebase corrector' or a 'frame store'. If you play your VHS through one of those, it should replace the old, wobbly, timebase signal with a new fresh one, thus giving a stable picture for iMovie to import.
The same thing usually happens if you import via a "digital pass-through" camcorder, which lets you play in video through an analogue input (..from VHS, for instance..) and simultaneously sends that video out through a digital FireWire connection.
I don't know if - and it seems like not - the Miglia Director's Cut has a TBC (time-base corrector) built in. Without that, you're experiencing dropped frames. With a TBC, you should be able to capture most, if not all, of your video. Some old analogue effects devices or video mixers - e.g; the Videotech VMX 410 ..made in Kent.. video mixer - had a TBC built in. (..It's no longer made (scroll halfway down here) but may be available on eBay.co.uk..) ..If you bought and used something like that between your VHS and Miglia, you might get better imported footage..
Oh: Welcome to iMovie Discussions!

  • Missing clips by converting to imovie11

    I just made the covertion to imovie11. Several clips in projects are With a ? . When i look for the missing clips  i find them back on my external disk where
    the new library is made. I can put them one by one in the project, but this is a lot of work. What am i doing wrong that the clip won't come automaticaly in the
    projects?
    Dirk

    Yeah, if I hadn't already spent so much time on the project, I would have just started over but that is not an option. The thing that is so frustrating about this is that the events are both there and intact (the clips will play just fine in the event browser), I just need to link them appropriately in the timeline and for some reason, it's insisting on pulling both interviews from one event where a duplicate clip was somehow copied.  I wouldn't mind just leaving them both there, but I suspect this muddling of things is what's causing the lack of video and the random 'missing clip' issues. Hargh.
    What exactly do you mean by fix the files one by one?  Fortunately, there are actually only a few clips in question. The events are interviews; one is a singular hour-long clip and the other is two clips that comprise an hour. Do you mean correcting them in the timeline or in the event browser or in the file folder tree? The files are on an external drive if that somehow helps.
    Russ- thanks to you as well. Hopefully this has shed a little light on my issue. I imported my clips from a camera...not exactly sure what "kind" they are. As for the melding of events, I have no idea what happened. All was fine then suddenly, missing clips everywhere and one event was copied into the other and timeline clips are now inexplicably linked to the combo event, not to the original event which still exists and is fine! I have invested a ton of time on this project (a documentary), so I really need to resolve this. I can't help but think this should be easier than it seems. Everything is there, it just needs to be straightened out.
    Many thanks for your interest and help, I really appreciate it!!

  • Annoying Sound Clips keep playing on compu

    I'm normally a computer whiz but this problem has me stumped. I just restarted the computer and I keep having these sound clips being played on my computer and I know its from the Creative MP3 Player or the software that came with it. I have looked on Zencast and some other software but I have not been able to find a stop button or a way to stop it either. Can someone please help fix this annoying problem? I can't enjoy my computer now since this keeps playing and I want sound for other normal applications like the browser or video clips that I choose to play.

    You've most likely downloaded a Trojan, probably from a bittorrent program. If you search around the internetz there is lots of info on how to remove these from your computer.

  • Captured clips are playing back at least TWICE as fast

    Hey all- I am capturing HD footage from a JVC Pro HD camera - footage shot at 24P. Everything seems fine with the capture (except for the fact that there is no device control - only capture now), but when I play back the captured clips I hear the audio playing at normal speed but the video is playing back at leat at twice the speed - all actors are in FAST motion. I hear the crew and director speaking, getting ready to shoot as I watch the scene start and speed through and end right as the clip ends.
    Any ideas? Is it a setting on the OUTPUT for the camera?
    Thanks for any help.

    Neither Final Cut Express nor Final Cut Pro support
    720p24 material. You need a product like HDVxDV to
    bring it in.
    Tom-
    Thanks for getting back to me last night. You seem to be a master in these parts. I am new here. I am really a director and writer but through my production company I have done a number of things in FCP over the years, always without any problems. That is until the introduction of HD and 24p at which time I sort of started saying to our amazing editor "whatver you say" and clouding over with confusion. After I got your message I went and got FCP 5 from the Apple store in an attempt to keep my friend, whose short we were trying to edit, from crying. Once installed and running we had the same issue as we had in FCE HD - the video - in terms of quality - was captured perfectly, but the clips would play back at almost twice the speed that they should have. I tried virtually every easy set-up that pertained to HD and nothing worked. On a few of them I could get an actual Log and Capture window to come up but when I went to play the material via device control there was no image, althoug I could see TC running. A friend suggested that you have to take the captured HD 24p clip and bring it into the timeline and render it for it to work. Is that true? I tried it to no avail. So, he shot on JVC GY-HD 100 at 24p. I now have FCP 5 HD and am considering buying LUMIERE software that purports to streamline this very issue. Any thoughts or suggestions you may have for me would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks so much,

  • Best way to import MTS (AVCHD)/missing clips using Log and Transfer

    My footage (Sony HDR 500) of an average project consists of approximately 10 hours film and 1600 clips. When I use the option Log and Transfer to import in FCE not all clips are imported in FCE. All other clips are consecutively numbered and cannot be compared with the numbering of the clips on the camera anymore. As a result it is, with those large amounts of clips, almost impossible to find out which clips are missing.
    Importing takes a very long time (is that normal?) so I would like to run this proces at night, but due to this missing clips problem I am afraid to do this so it is not a good option for me. Does anyone recognize this problem?
    To avoid all this I now convert all clips with Voltaic to .mov before importing. At least I know for sure that I have all clips imported, but it is so cumbersome and it takes a lot of time too. This proces I do in steps because I am afraid to start everything at once. After converting the project almost takes 120 GB.
    It takes days before everything is imported and that frustrates me. If the same material is imported in Edius for example it only takes an hour (tested) so it appears to be an FCE/Apple problem. Is there any way to accelerate?
    I am working with an iMac from 2010, 2,8GHz quadcore i7, 16GB intern geheugen met snow leopard.
    I hope someone can help me out.
    Thanks, Jacqueline

    While I have not seen the exact problem you describe, 1600 clips is a lot of clips to import at once - so is 10 hours of video.
    If you are using FCE to Log & Transfer directly from the camera, your clips are automatically being transcoded to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec(AIC) during importing, which explains the long time it takes to ingest the clips.
    Also, QT/AIC files are much, much larger than the AVCHD clips in your camera.  If you are shooting 1920x1080 video, 10 hours of AVCHD translates into roughly 450GB of QT/AIC clips.  It is possible that you may be a) running out of disk space, or b) exceeding the scratch disk minimum allowable free space set in FCE > System Settings.  If so, that could explain why not all your clips are being imported - FCE is probably stopping the Log & Transfer process when it hits the disk space limit.
    Regarding alternatives, I'm not so sure about Voltaic.  The Voltaic documentation says it only supports H.264 in QT/.mov files, and that would not be usable in FCE.  Check some of those clips to see what codec they are.  I suspect they are H.264.  (Also, you referred to the converted clips taking 120GB space, which just happens to match the AVCHD storage capacity of your camera ... and AVCHD is a form of H.264 video, so they take up about the same disk space.)
    In order to edit your clips in FCE, they need to be QT/AIC.  Two alternatives come to mind - Clipwrap and MPEG Streamclip.  Both can convert AVCHD video to QT/AIC, and both support batch conversion.  If it were me, I'd consider Clipwrap first, for this volume of material, since Clipwrap was specifically designed for AVCHD.
    The reason importing is so much faster in Edius is that it can import & directly edit AVCHD clips; Edius basically just copies the clips from the camera to your hard drive.  FCE has to convert the clips to QT/AIC first, before you can edit the video, and that takes considerable time.

  • Help - Problems exporting my first project - missing clips

    Hi all,
    I've been a sound engineer for close to 20 years and I'm just finishing my first ever video edit, a project to help my wife.  Naturally our deadline is tomorrow morning....
    I've got my edit done and it plays perfectly in Final Cut Pro X viewer.  When I export in any format (Youtube or just as a file to Quicktime) certain clips do not appear in the exported movie, the audio is there but the video is blacked out.  They are the same clips every time.
    I imported most of the clips from the same camera, albeit in a few different batches.  When I look at the inspector info for some clips that play and some that don't they are exactly the same Codec - H.264, Linear PCM.
    Any ideas on what could be causing this?
    Thanks,
    Ruairi

    Try this (might work).
    Select one of the offending clips in the storyline and hit Shift+F to find it in the browser.
    Hit Cmd+C to copy it.
    Create a new project (Cmd+N) and paste the clip in there.
    Export the clip with it's current settings, then re-import that clip into the storyline and try your export again.
    Does the clip show up?
    If so, repeat as necessary.
    The only other thing I can think of is to trash your preferences:
    Download Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager (free, simple to use, and perfectly safe, both to download and use).

  • Undo is causing missing clips in tieline

    Very often when I attempt to undo a change in FCE...to delete a clip that was just inserted for instance...all the other clips in the timeline revert back to their original positions, as they should, but with gaps throughout where clips used to be. If I click play in the canvas the missing clips appear in the canvas even as the playhead moves over blank space and there is no way to access them in the timeline. As far as the timeline is concerned they are gone. Not all of the clips...just one or two or sometimes several are missing, scattered throughout the sequence.
    Any ideas about the cause of this strange behavior?

    Well, I never had your problem.
    My best guess is that the rendered files are not handled correctly by FCE after you undo the operation. This happened to me with nested sequences, but there might be some relation with your problem.
    So you could try removing the rendered files and re-render after undo (to delete render files, you may either disable full tracks, or single clips, using the contextual menu).
    Worth a try

  • Upgraded iDVD 6 missing clip errors

    I recently upgraded to iLife 6 after successfully creating over 20 movies (DVD's) with iLife 5. The first movie that I edited with the new iMovie came out really well (45 minutes long), but when I go to burn the DVD using iDVD 6.0, I always get the same error..."Cannot find Clip 158" (or several missing clips) with an option to "Search" or "Cancel". Searching is to no avail...because the clips that iDVD says are missing are not part of the final edited movie, and selecting cancel just dumps the DVD burn. This error is very repeatable (tried 4 times).

    Hello, I am also having a similiar problem, I am trying to burn an imovie project in idvd, and while it begins encoding, it gives me a message that I am missing clips that a) are not in my project, or b) are in my project and are not missing.
    Can you help me to solve this? My contract project is due tomorrow, and I can not get it to them....?????

  • Prelude missing clip

    I ingest a group of clips then stich all clips but one clip is always missing, random order of missing clip.
    If I pull the memory card from the camera and process through the memory card directly it works fine.

  • IMovie missing clips

    How do you save iMovie project permanently? After deleting the used clips two free up memory, the video project shows 'missing files'.

    In addition to removing or deleting, renaming them would also cause this. Or having them on an external drive which is not currently plugged in.
    Your Video is kept in the Event. The Project references the video in the Event, without changing it.
    It sounds like your project is telling you that the Event clips are not where it expected to find them.
    If you mouse over the thumbnails of the missing clips in your project, does it show a path?

  • Photos missing from Camera Roll but but not from Whatsapp

    This is some weird situation here. I got my new iphone (6). Old one was 4s. I backuped to my computer, then restored from backup for new iphone. But last 10-12 photos are missing from camera roll but when i try to send a photo to one of my whatsapp contacts i can see those photos there. Dont know what to do to bring them back. Help please

    I also have the same problem. I upgraded a 3G to 4 iOS and lost one of 2 camera rolls. I've searched for the answers too and got next to nothing! I searched apple's support website using the iPhone as the device and used the key words: "iphone upgrade 4 lost photos" and got information on a mac laptop! I got more info by Googling the same key words but still no fix. So I called apple and after a few meager attempts I was told "Sorry they are lost". I asked about a fix coming out and was told they "are still examining the problem, to see if anything can even be done about it." Maybe it’s my fault for thinking any man made device could be dependable... I would give up my iPhone now and forever to retrieve those photos. They were mostly of my children, ages 3 and 5, taken over the last 2 years... starting in the AT&T store, the day I bought my iPhone.

  • Selecting a movie clip to play

    Ok,
    The following set of code is partially working for me. If the
    randomNumber*100 is < 90, the clip "straight" plays just fine.
    If it is >90, both the "slightbenddown", and "slightbendup"
    clips go off at the same time.
    var randomNumber:Number = Math.random();
    if (randomNumber*100 <= 90)
    straight.play()
    if (randomNumber*100 > 90 && randomNumber*100
    <= 91)
    slightbenddown.play()
    if (randomNumber*100 > 91 && randomNumber*100
    <= 92)
    slightbendup.play()
    How can I make it so that "slightbenddown" only plays when
    (90<randomNumber<=91) and "slightbendup only plays when
    (91<randomNumber<=92)?
    Thank you for any help that you can give.
    BobR

    I tried the attached code, and still did not get what I was
    looking for. If the else is included for all of the iterations, I
    only get to see straight and slightbenddown. If I do the same
    thing, except leave off all of the elses, I do get to see the other
    movie clips, but almost always I see more than one at a time
    (usually slightbenddown + any other one).
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

  • Can' get movie clip to play

    I have a Flash movie that plays a movie clip called DR1 at
    frame 113 using this code:
    DR1.play();
    There is nothing else going on in the movie for the length of
    the clip, but when I play the movie, the clip does not play - I
    just have a blank screen for those frames.
    Also, if I try dragging an instance of the movie onto the
    timeline at that point, the same thing happens - blank screen for
    the amount of frames that the clip is present.
    If I play the clip in the library it plays correctly.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Beth

    OK - I realize now that I have to actually publish the movie
    to have the clip play, whether by dragging an instance onto the
    timeline or loading it via AS.
    Now I have another issue. I'm sorry if these are stupid
    questions, but I have a hard time finding things in the help file -
    maybe I'm too much of a new Flash user to understand what to look
    for!
    Anyway, when I play the movie, I have three problems:
    1) the clip starts playing immediately, even though I don't
    issue the play() command until the middle of the movie. I do the
    attachMovie in the first frame so that it has loaded by the time I
    want to play it, but it starts playing right away even though I
    don't tell it to play.
    2) the clip seems to be centered on the upper left corner of
    the screen when it plays. I have tried setting the _x and _y
    properties of the instance to 0,0 but that doesn't seem to make a
    difference. I want the clip to be centered on the screen (it is
    sized to take up the whole stage) but can't seem to move it no
    matter what values I plug into the _x and _y properties.
    3) the clip loops continuously. I only want it to play once
    but can't seem to find a property to control the looping.
    Here is the code in the first frame:
    var mc1:MovieClip;
    mc1 = this.createEmptyMovieClip("DR1",
    this.getNextHighestDepth());
    this.attachMovie("DR1", "mc1", this.getNextHighestDepth());
    mc1._x = 500;
    mc1._y = 500;
    mc1.stop(); (this was added to get it to not play until
    later, to no avail)
    And the code at frame 113:
    mc1.play();
    And finally at frame 412:
    mc1.stop();
    Help, please!
    Thanks,
    Beth
