Missing clips in compound clip

I have started editing a project and have created a compound clip within the event. I have gone back to it this evening and it is saying the whole of the compound clip is 'missing clips' even though the original footage/clips are there so no relink/reimport works.
Does anyone know how I can restore this? Or has anyone experienced the sameproblem, if so is it possible to get it back to a working state?
Thanks!

Yes, you would think so. The work around is simple, but this shouldn't be happening.
The iMovie bugs site doesn't mention my issue, however I found the still image rendering issue interesting. I have hundreds of still images to incorporate into this project and those work arounds will be useful.
Thanks!
(I'd still be interested in knowing if anyone else has experienced this missing clips issue.)

  • Problems with missing media in compound clips in archived projects...

I archived some FCPX projects as sparse disk bundles.  When I archived them, to save space, I deleted the optimized and proxy media, and only kept the original files (which are AVCHD), so that saved a lot of space.  Now I find that I need to go back and edit the projects some more and make some changes.  So I opened the sparse disk bundles and transcoded the media again into optimized and proxy media.
The problem I'm having is that most of the clips in these projects are compound clips.  And I'm getting the red screen with the "T" and the exclamation mark in the yellow triangle.  I presume that means footage is missing?
How do I solve this?  Did I somehow screw up in a way that I've lost all these compound clips?
Or is FCPX maybe looking for the media that composes the compound clips in areas where it no longer is?
I should note that I made sparse disk bundles of these clips after all the editing was done.  In other words, when I created the compound clips, the projects were not in these sparse disk bundles.  I'm guessing that is what's causing this problem and that I just have to somehow "tell" FCPX where to find the media from the compound clips.

    I am using 10.1.1 on OS X 10.9.3 Mavricks.
Here are two screenshots the first is how the timeline should look and the second is with the clips missing.

  • Editing last clip in compound clips

I have a series of clips grouped together in a larger compound clip. I have chosen to delete the last clip from the series and now there is a gap of a few seconds before the end of the compound clip grouping and the next series in the storyline.  How do i go about trimming the back end of the compound clip?

You can drag the compound clip's out/end point to the left until it turns yellow, then drag it back to the right until it stops (it will turn red again), which will be at the end of the last clip in the compound clip.
Another option is to select the compound clip, press Cmd-Shift-G (Break Apart Clip Items) then Option-G (New Compound Clip).

  • Compound clip did not include all my footage

So I am required to create a highlight reel for a game I filmed as a part of my sports film position and was to create a compound clip first. The clip was made and I keyworded all the highlights only to find I was missing 7 out of 8 goals during the game. A look back through my footage revealed that all of the goals were indeed in the original footage, but about 4 minutes (and one goal) of footage was missing from the compound clip. I was wondering if there was anyway to add footage to a compound clip since I've already completely keyworded what was there with highlights and it would be quite a setback if I had to start over.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

They probably use third-party apps because they need to make selective backups. Disk Utility can only make a complete full-disk restore, no picking and choosing. That doesn't mean they chose the third-party apps because Disk Utility is faulty. Let's wait a while and see if anyone really has something to contribute about this issue with Disk Utility.

  • Precision editing in compound clips after creating them!

    Scenario:
I have a storyline with clips and compound clips and it has a music bed underneath.
After making the compound clips I want to change some "compound "clips"" so that they match the music more precisely.  The problem is when I open up the compound clip the music does not play so it is pure guesswork once inside.
I tried to add markers to the CompoundClip on the main storyline but they are not passed through.
Is there a way to do this?  I used to wait till the end before creating CC clips but did it as I went along this time - something I am regretting at the moment.
    Thanks Alan

mmm - I was thinking that myself but then thought I must have missed something.
    Thanks Tom

  • Compound clip retime issue.

    Hi,
When I speed up (retime ca. 600%) compound clip I have strange result. When video is playback (and after render too!) I see first frame of cuted video in compound clip, and skip to next first frame of next cuted clip. It was appeared after last update.
    Retimed compound clip:
    Clips in compound clip above:
    And video result:

    Thank You for any help

I tried delete all cach and render files, and nothing help. This is on timeline and after export too.
Only I have this issue? Maybe someone try reproduce this issue:
    1. Create compound clip.
    2. Cut few times in compound clip.
    3. Speed up compound min. 600%.
If only I have this problem, this is any way to make a complaint to Apple?
    Thanks for any help

  • FCPX 10.0.6 appears to have bugs with Compound Clips

Just a warning -- I  upgraded to 10.0.6 and am finding  annoying problems with the handling of Compound Clips.  After any non-trivial editing of Compound Clips, FCPX will just stop rendering most of your video.  You will just see a black screen, occasionally with some of your titles or shapes, but the bulk of the video is suddenly not  rendered any more.  Sometimes you can see it briefly in flashes inbetween black screens if you frame advance with right-arrow.  But the only way to get out of this situation that I have found so far is to completely exit and re-enter FCPX.  Which is really tedious and annoying to have to do this every time you edit the contents of a Compound Clip.
A secondary note:  Beware -- they significantly changed the behavior of Compound Clips.  Compound Clips are now "linked" so if you aren't aware of this change and do something like copy and paste a Compound Clip, then innocently edit one of the pasted Compound Clips, you will unknowingly change them all.  Perhaps a nice feature, but if you don't realize this change was made, and you go about doing what you used to do, you will waste some time because you will destroy all those linked Compound Clips since you didn't know they are all now linked.  Kind of amazing that they would just change the behavior like this and make the new behavior the default.  If you're being nice to your users, you usually try to make things work compatibily with how they worked before, requiring you to do something different to get the new behavior.  I guess I learned that I better read the release notes carefully before upgrading because who knows what behavior may have changed.

After spending some time on the Phone with support, we concluded that this FCPX project has been corrupted in some unrecoverable way which caused the black screen problems with Compound Clips.  I will need to rebuild the project from scratch.  Whether it was corrupted by the new version or it is a coincidence that it became corrupted right about the same time is not known.

  • Can anyone help me...Why Can't I open a compound clips containing missing files?

I Have been using FCPX for only a short time and I have a few unfinished projects on the go. But after tidying up an reorganising my hard drives putting FCPx Projects and Events on an external drive. I find some of my projects with compound clips show this horrid warning icon for "missing files". I am want to relink  the missing clips but FCPX will not allow me to open the compound clips so I could see what are the missing ones... so, can anyone help find a way to re-link or recover those missing files.

File browser? You mean the compound clip is in the project but not in the event? What version of the software are you using?
Select the compound clip and use Clip>Reference New Parent Clip. Does that work? Try relinking the project files.

  • Compound clips showing as missing events

I started a project on Macpro tower, then copied that project with all it's events and media to a portable hard drive to work on it with my Macbook Pro.  I did not import anything into the event for this project while working on the Macbook, but I did create some compound clips.  After working on the Macbook, plugged the portable drive into my Macpro tower and copied the project back to the hard drive in the Mac Pro.  I performed the copy via drag and drop withinn Final Cut Pro X. I then began to work on the project.  I did not re-copy the events and clips back to the Mac Pro tower, because they are all there already.
Now, I find that when I eject the portable drive from the Mac Pro tower, the compound clips show up as a missing event, even though the clips within those compound clips are in the current project.  I've tried to re-link the media, but there doesn't seem to be a way to re-link the compound clip.  I could just trash the new project, but I've done some work on it that I don't want to lose.  Any help would be appreciated.

now I know to re-import everything back even if nothing has really changed.
I am glad you got it working. But something did change. You created compound clips in the Event Library when you added them to your project on the MBPro. When you opened the project on your tower there were no compound clips in the event library without the portable drive connected. Once you copied the new events onto the tower event library FCP was happy and all you need to do is replace the old compounds in the timeline with the new ones.

  • Simple title shows up as missing compound clip after 10.1 update

None of my projects had any missing files prior to updating to 10.1. It all went quite smoothly with the exception of one project that has three or four clips that now show up as compound clips, but they were not compound clips in the original. One is a simple scrolling title.  If I open the supposed compound clip in the timeline it looks like this:
It is "attached" in some way to the previous still image and in fact if I return to the main timeline and select the clip and expand it by clicking and dragging the left handle so as to make the title longer it will actually roll into the previous clips and then the red "missing" compound clip will contain previous clip sections. Oddly if I play the project it all plays just fine and there are none of the clips that are marked as missing cause a problem.
Has anyone seen this kind of behavior before?
My product list is out of date....

You may soon develop a reputation for knowing something about this program, Tom.
Thanks very much. Now to research on why a project that was in the Updated Projects "folder" and then dragged to an event has disappeared entirely...but I'll post that question if I can't find the answer.

  • Missing Compound Clip

I created some compound clips in a project that I am currently working on.  After editing another area of the project, I discovered that a few of the compound clips appear to be blank.  The clips have a large compound clip symbol that I can see but nothing plays - no audio or video.  The clip name appears on top of the clip in the timeline but it does not show up in the index.  I'm not sure what I did to cause this.  It happened before and I just hit undo until the clip came back.  I didn't catch this in time to do that.  Would editing the compound clip in the timeline without expanding it cause this?  I really don't want to re-do all my work.

The compound in the event viewer is also blank.  It is the original, unedited clip that still plays.  My fault for not understanding that.  Here is what the compound clip looks like in the event viewer.

  • How do I share a compound clip between projects?...

    Hello everyone,
I have created a 10 second intro/title graphic clip in Motion and published it to FCPX. I have added this generator sequence to a project's timeline in FCPX. I then added a lower third title set. I have edited my text (font, style, etc) of my lower third text to where I want it. I then created a compound clip of the two parts (title generator and the lower third text element).
Now that it is dialed in, I need to be able to use it as a template for a series of videos I am working on. I can't seem to find a way to save it and make it availible to drop into other project sequences. I have tried to make a favourite out of the clip, I tried to copy and paste between projects (and into a new event)... nothing works fo rme.
    What am I missing?
Any help is appreciated, thank you,
    Shea A.J. Comfort

    Hi Andy
    Thank you for the advice.
I tried your method but there definitely seems to be a fault or glitch in my software.  If I highlight a number of connected clips and audio tracks the program will not copy and paste them into the newly created compound clip in my event library.
I therefore decided to do it the slow ay and copy each individual item.  This worked fine until I came to the final audio track.  No matter how many times I copy this track Final Cut refuses to do this.  It always comes up with the previous item I copied.  I have retried this and it will copy all the items except one.  As you would expect I have done a fair amount of work on this track in the form of equyalisation, a comnpression filter and numerous keyframes on the level to come out with a mix that I am happy with.  I cannot however move it from the original project.
I find this totally unacceptable and consider the software to be unfit for purpose as a result.  Unfortunately the apple terms and conditions state that all purchases are final and I have no recourse upon them for the fact that it does not work.
I cannot see how an update will fix a problem with my software that is not universal to all users.  I believe that I can reinstall it without being charged again but am hesitant to do this for fear of losing the large amount of work that I have put into the project.
My only hope now is to ring the premium rate number for customer support in the unlikely hope that it can be solved this way.
    Not Happy

  • Is it true that compound clips don't transfer when organizing, consolidating, or duplicating projects?

I've been stymied trying to duplicate projects with used media.  My compound clips lose their connections much of the time.  To be fair, I use compound clips that I made before 10.6 and after 10.6. Maybe that's the issue?  Either way, I thinking I'm doing everything by the book -- organizing and consolidating event media, consolidationg project media, then duplicating, then organizing again just to be sure.  But my compound clips connections are getting lost.  I am confused about all of these organizing and consolidating choices and would love to get the dope on how to do this in a fool proof way. That is if there isn't a bug with the compound clip transferring -- which I read on FCP.CO.  Thanks for any advice.

I've got a project on my Thunderbolt drive that references 3 events:
My aim is to move this project to another disk with only the used clips, including compound and multicam clips.  So I click on the project and pick duplicate project with used clips and select a different drive.
(I've tried consolidating and organizing these events and projects before this step but I always get the messages that the media is all in the same location.)
When the project duplicates, I find that it still references clips on the original drive:
So I go to modify the event references and drag the event that I want to reference (in this case the one on the Macintosh HD) to the top of the list, as such:
When I click OK, however, the event on my Mac HD does not really stay at the top of the list, and my info pannel shows that the project is still referencing multiple events in multiple locations.  When I reopen the modify events window, the event references are not in the order I tried to set them at in the previous step:
I can repeat this process over and over and still get random and incorrect results.
The big issue is that if I look at the event that I tried to duplicate the used media to, the compound clips are all referencing their original events still.  If I disconnect the drive with those original events, I get the missing media icon in my event and my project.
If I reconnect the drive and try to organize event files or consolidate or organize project files, my compound clips still reference media from the other drives.
I believe I've tried performing nearly every sequence of consolidating, organizing, duplicating, etc that I've read about -- not just the sequence above.  And I never get reliable results with compound clips.
I would love a review of the exact sequence of events I should follow to successfully archive a project on a separate drive with only used media, including compound clips.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks!

  • How to Create a Generic Compound Clip?

Sometimes, when I create a Compound Clip, a generic "compound clip" is created - i.e. it is not given the option to be named, thus does not become an Event.
Other times, seemingly doing the same thing, I am forced to give the new clip a name, which then becomes an Event.   It seems hit and miss -- sometimes I am asked to name them, sometimes not.
The problem is, that in reusing elements from previous episodes, when editing the named Compound Clip, the Event is edited, and the older episodes are affected.
My question:  How can I choose to create non-named, non-event Compound Clips?
    Thanks,
    Geoff

Thanks Tom.  I am not aware of doing anything different between the two results.  I simply select a bunch of clips, then right-click "New Compound Clip...".  Sometimes it just does it, other times I get a dialog asking me to give it a name and choose the Event folder.
Perhaps I am incorrect, but I have done this for a long time, and never noticed what I am doing differently.  Today, I am unable to reproduce the 'generic' compound clip.
Sorry I can't at this stage be more precise, but I admit that I must be doing something different to get the different results.   I do have clips in my project that are simply called 'Compound Clip', and they do not belong in any Event (clicking on 'Reveal in Event Browser' does nothing).  This is what I prefer.

  • How to break compound clip unable to relink?

I edited a video one computer. I transferred over to another computer. I relinked all of the video files using 'File' - 'Relink Project Files'. Once all of the files where relinked unfortuntley the compound clips did not relink. When I selected the compound clip where the video files are missing. I cannot break the compound clip to relink the files. 'Open in Timeline', 'double clicking on compound clip' and 'Break Apart Clip Files' does not work. It simply does not give me the option. This is unfortunate because I have to essential redue these edits on the computer I transferred my project on. There is no way around it?? This seems like a Final Cut Pro X glitch/problem. Does any one have any solution to this problem? I research this problem and found no solution! help anyone?

    Hi Tom,
Problem is when I right click on the compoud clip, there was no longer an option to break clips apart !
Where does Apple locate the function to break clips apart now in 10.0.6 ?
    Thanks
