Missing closed captions on the screen

I recorded some TV shows on my DVD/VHS player. I inserted the DVD on my iMac G4.
There are no captions on any show, but a few commercials' captions showed up on the screen. My DVD player showed up all captions. What is the matter with the Quicktime?

Hi.  What we do is resize the project as one of the last steps in the development process.  We resize the height only, adding about 45 pixels.  We position the existing project at the top, thus adding about 45 pixels at the bottom as a "footer".  This footer then contains the playbar and also leaves enough room for two lines of closed captioning.  Of course we have to take this extra space into consideration when we do our original screen captures.  We capture at 1005 x 605, then resize twice --- the first time to add 25 pixels to the top for a header, then the second time to add 45 pixels to the bottom for a footer.  Each time we keep the original project the same size and fill the background with color, so the actual screen captures do not get rescaled.  The end result is a published project that is 1005 x 675.
The other alternative is to position the application you are capturing on a blank desktop background and capture the application window and some of the extra blank desktop background below the window.  But this method prevents you from using the "snap to fit" option when capturing an application.
I hope this makes sense.

  • TV series closed captioned until the latest episodes!

I have downloaded this TV series, Hells on Wheels, season 2 on iTunes.  Due to my hearing impairment, I must view with closed captions.  However, this series as initially captioned but the last two aren't!!!!  Can anyone shed a light on the reason why this happened????  (Please note this is Australian based iTunes)

I have no idea but you're not the only one with this problem.
i did not download any series where one or two episode is missing Closed Captions, I have been making a wish list of what television series I would like to buy and download (UK iTunes) and noticed that for some different series, it can sometimes be the first episode is missing CC but the rest do, or it may be one or two somewhere in the middle of the season seems to be missing CC.
    For example:
When it comes to the British comedy 'Red Dwarf', in Series 1, the first episode is listed as not having CC but the rest of the episodes do have CC. Same for Series 2.
Some Star Trek series, I believe Deep Space Nine, seems to have CC expect for one or two episode here and there.
I strongly agree with you, we need to know why sometimes some episode lacks CC while the while series do, when you compare this to DVDs, all episode do.
So please could someone shed a light on this??

  • Apple TV 2 - Can it display closed captions for the hearing impaired?

I have not seen a direct answer to this question anywhere, even on the web. If I buy a movie/TV show DVD, I get closed captions. If I rent or buy from iTunes or some other source, does this mean there are no closed captions to display, or does it mean that Apple TV 2 cannot display the closed captions? It is especially helpful with British shows. We use closed captions all the time for everything else. If it cannot be displayed, Apple TV 2 is largely useless for us. Note: many Boomers (we with the money to spend, not the 15 year olds!) have damaged hearing- they should be included in marketing.

The easiest way to find videos with closed captioning is to select Column Browser->Show Column Browser from the View menu in iTunes. Select a category and then look for titles displaying the CC icon. You can then rent them in iTunes or find them in the Menu in the ATV and rent them there.

  • Closed Captioning - Remain on Screen

I'm experimenting with Closed Captions in Captivate 3. I'd
like the text in the caption to remain on the screen until the end
of the slide. Seems like the text (by default) goes away as soon as
the last syllable of audio has been spoken. I've tried adding a
second or two of silence to the end of the .wav file but it doesn't
    seem to help.

    Hi Three Penguins
easy win here. If you have extended the audio the cc caption
length can be increased by adding a new caption right at the end of
the audio (you can leave this new caption blank if you wish). This
resets the end time of the cc caption to co-incide with the end of
    the audio

  • Missing lower 25% of the screen ONLY in Apple DVD player

    Hi everybody,
I just made a showreel DVD (1 menu, 1 video track) in DVD SP 3.02. It plays back correctly on all dvd players (stand alone, PC) except Apple DVD Player: it strechtes the menu and the video vertically so it's missing the lower 25% of the screen. When I press 'pause' while the video is playing, and then 'play' again, it jumps to the correct aspect ratio. But after ejecting and inserting it again, the same problem appears. I really want to solve this problem, because a lot of my clients use their apple laptop to watch the dvd. Is there a setting I'm missing?
    Here are the specs:
    - Movie in FCP (DV PAL, 720x576)
    - Export using Compressor, 60 minutes high quality encode
    - To DVD studio Pro 3.02, PAL, 4:3
    Thanx,
    Ward, Netherlands

Thanks for your reply, but the problem hasn't been solved yet. There are no assets in my menu (only a small button with text, in the center of the screen), and my video is already 720x576.
I do get some warnings when I build/format my DVD. After it says 'compile completed succesfully' and before it starts formatting, it says this:
Warning: The directory ‘/Users/ward/Desktop/test2/VIDEO_TS/Render Data’ will not be included in the final disc.
Warning: The file ‘VOB_DATA.LAY’ found in the VIDEO_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.
Warning: The file ‘WARD.layout’ found in the VIDEO_TS folder will not be included in the final disc.
Could this have anything to do with it?

  • How do you enable closed captioning in the new Premiere Pro CC 2014?

I just upgraded to the latest version of Premiere Pro CC 2014... I can't seem to find a way to "enable" closed captioning!

Look for the wrench icon in the monitors, above the playback area, to the right. Tooltip for it is "Settings..." -- the menu item is in the flag menu there: Closed Captioning Display...

  • Missing closed captioning from episodes

I recently updated my iTunes to version 8 and have activated the closed captioning option, however, the shows I have downloaded are not showing the captioning at all. This is odd since they are closed captioned on Television and DVD's.
Season 5 of Stargate Atlantis is not available to Canadian viewers yet accept through iTunes or expensive movie packages from Starchoice. I tried two episodes through iTunes and they were not captioned.
This is frustrating for me since I'm hard of hearing and have trouble following the dialogue during scenes of intense action or tons of technical jargon (ever tried to lipread McKay?).
I would love to watch the new season via iTunes but unfortunately they are too dimwitted to include captioning...

  • Closed Captions not 508 Compliant!

In order to be Section 508 compliant – required by government (US) contracts – I need to be able to keep the closed caption on the screen until the user clicks or performs the requested task or indicates that they are done with that slide. Right now all I get is Closed Captions while the audio is playing. I know that I can add silence at the end of audio clips but the closed captions just blanks out when the audio clip is over. It is not physically possible for the hearing impaired to watch the action on the screen (how to use software for instance) and read closed captions at the same time, therefore the closed caption needs to remain “on” for the rest of the slide – or at least that should be an option. Without this option the closed captions and are useless for functional closed captioning and can’t be made Government (US) Section 508 compliant.
Does anyone have a work-around for this? We have Government contracts coming up and may have to get off Captivate if I can’t make this work!

I am unsure as to the actual answer, however, the "skin" that include the Closed Captions is actually an swf. The point of publishing to HTML is because some devices (ie I-pad) cant play the swf. So the HTML version skips the swf- which of course includes the "skin".
That said, I think the Table of Contents works in HTML, so maybe I am incorrect in sayin the "skin" is an swf. Maybe only the "playbar" is an swf. But it seems the CC is still related to the playbar.
If anyone knows how to use the built-in Closed Caption feature with HTML, I would LOVE to hear it. But I am suspecting the CCs will have to be done by hand.

  • Converting Captivate 3 to 4 (EConvertError), Fixing Missing Item Name & Closed Captioning Freeze

This isn't a question, but I do want to share the information since I couldn't find anything on the topic and had to play with it for hours.
I had an old Captivate 3 file and needed to open it, intact, in Captivate 4. First I received the error: Exception EConvertError in module when I tried to open the file and clicked OK to save the file as a different name. Once I found a workaround and got my file up and running again, the Item Name fields were missing on all slides, and I therefore could not convert to a swf format. Once I figured out the workaround for this issue, I noticed the closed captioning in the swf file would only show the first frame, then it would freeze as the video played. The following instructions will help you with any of these issues:
If you still have Captivate 3 available and receive the EConvertError message when trying to save as a new file from Captivate 4:
    Open Captivate 3
    Turn OFF the LMN setting
    Resave in Captivate 3
    Open again in Captivate 4
If you only have Captivate 4 available and receive the EConvertError message when trying to save as a new file from Captivate 4::
Click OK when you receive the Exception EConvertError message
Locate the file and reopen it
    Tada!
If you have fixed the file and have it open successfully, but are missing the "Item Name" fields:
Double-click the first slide to open it
In the slideshow panel on the left, right-click on the first slide and selct Copy slide
Click on the first slide again and select Paste slide
The new slide will be inserted after the original
    Delete the original slide
Repeat these steps for each slide
This will put the Item Name back onto each slide element in the correct order
If you have fixed the file and have it open successfully, but the Closed Captioning (CC) is freezing on the first line of text in the swf file:
Create a new blank project with the target project file open as well
Look at all settings, i.e., skin color, closed captioning properties, etc and make sure they match in the blank presentation (you don't have to worry about the dimensions)
Go to the File menu, then Import, then Slides/Objects...
The Closed Captioning will work in the new file
    Perform a Save As

    Hi Katie
I wasn't trying to be condescending, I was genuinely confused by your instructions. I had no clue what you were referring to. We see this often here. Sometimes there is something to give us a clue as to what is being referred to. For example, folks regularly say they are having trouble with Text Boxes. This could mean Text Entry Boxes or it could mean Text Captions. So we might be able to intuit that they mean one or the other by the way they stated the issue. In your case there seemed to be no context upon which to draw the conclusion.
I apologize if I came off as being condescending, as it wasn't meant that way.
I think if you will take some time and read some of the posts I make you will come to the conclusion that I was only trying to be helpful.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Closed captioning not appearing in video files

I've been working on producing a number of videos intended to be used as content in an iPad app for a Self-Guided Museum Tour which is under development by a non-profit Museum I work for. Many of the videos are intended to have closed captions for the hearing impaired.
Videos are being produced with Adobe Premier CC and exported as Quicktime .mov files with embedded closed captioning. These files play in all instances but in most of them, including the current IOS and Mac OS systems, the closed captioning is not visible. Tests indicate:
Closed captioning IS visible when the .mov file is played on Quicktime Player 10.3 on a Mac running OS 10.8.5 in all instances.
Closed captioning IS visible when the .mov file is played on Quicktime Player 10.3 on a Mac running OS 10.9 as long as English subtitle is enabled.
Oddly, closed captioning IS visible the .mov file is played on an old copy of Quicktime Player 7 running OS 10.9.5 as long as "show closed captioning" is enabled.
Closed captioning IS NOT visible when the .mov file is played on Quicktime Player 10.3 (with subtitles either off or automatic) on a Mac running OS 10.9.5.
Closed captioning IS NOT visible when the .mov file is imported into an iPad Air running IOS 8.1.1 and played with Safari using the built-in IOS video player. This is my target destination for the project and is critical.
Since the .mov file does contain an embedded closed captioning track (verified as track 3), the problem does not appear to be with the file or how it was created. The problem appears to be with the video player supplied by Apple in the most current versions of both OSX and IOS. In light of Apple's long-standing priority for accessibility this result is surprising.
Need help if anyone can help figure out how to make closed captions work with the IOS video player.

Problem solved with a little help from a Senior Apple Tech Support person.
Essentially, what has to be done in the current versions of both OSX and IOS  is to configure the playback device's accessibility settings beforehand:
    IOS 8.1.1
    Settings–General–Accessibility–Subtitles and Captioning–turn on "Closed Captions+SDH"
    OSX 10.9.5 and OSX 10.10:
System Preferences–Accessibility–scroll down to Captions and click on "Prefer Closed Captions and SDH”
You can also change the font style for captioning from these menus.
Once done, a small caption icon that looks like a text bubble on the bottom of the screen when videos are loaded, now has a third option besides "Off" and "Automatic". If the video being played has captioning embedded it may read something like "English CC", as it does in the case of my Premier CC-generated, embedded closed captions. Once that is selected, the captions play properly. [Note that in IOS 8.1.1, the caption icon only appears when a video is played in full screen mode.]

  • Does Closed Captioning display differently from one Player/TV to another?

    Hi Everyone,
We just completed our first project at our facility that involved Closed Captioning from an .SCC file produced by CPC and when we preview a DVD Test of the project, the captions are not displaying as expected. We received a VHS preview copy which display the captions fine, but when we look at the DVD Test in the Apple DVD Player, the captions are not justified in a consistant manner, and sometimes a couple appear as if they were haphazardly placed on the screen.
Is possible that Captioning as how it is interpreted/displayed might vary from one TV or DVD Player to another?
Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, everyone.
    Regards,
    -James-

    UPDATE:
So far I've tested the DVD created with Closed Captions from the *.scc file, and my findings are that the PC software I've tested in closely match that of the VHS open-caption dub that the captioning company provided us. I have tried the VLC Player on the Mac, but have not had success in enabling the captions, nor been able to find any posts on the VLC support forum.
I've also been successful at finding and testing a DVD Player that can display the captions on the DVD, and find that they play similarly to that on both the VHS open-caption an PC Playback, but the position on the screen is slightly different.
Does anyone have any other experience with Closed Captioning that could either offer insight to the working theory that each TV/DVD Player/Computer DVD Software platform interprets closed captions differently from one another?
    Regards and thanks in advance,
    -James-

  • Premiere Pro CC Closed Captions format issues on render

I have added closed captions to my Premiere Pro project — took bloody ages — and all looks and runs great within the project. Simple white captions over the video.
Although, when I render the video out with the closed captions embedded within the video, cirtain captions seem to have slightly "dodgy" formatting when played back in quicktime player.
Some sections of the captions have a black backgroun on and some do not. As I previously mentioned the captions are all fine within the project. It just seems to happen on the render file… Has anyone any ideas why this could be?
Have attached a few screens of the issue I am finding…
    http://d.pr/i/lVI2
    http://d.pr/i/8iin

When you make a change to the size of the QuickTime window, does the problem go away?
If the answer is "no", I'd try a few things:
-- Check to see if the frame rate of the closed captioning matches the frame rate of the source clip -- this is important
-- Export matching the exact framerate of the closed captioning and clip and see how this looks
-- Try exporting out to different frame rates and see if the problem still happens
-- See if this problem in playback happens with other external players
-- Update the QuickTime player and see if it still happens
-- Reimport the exported problem file into PPRO and see if the playback issue happen there
Then let me know what the results are.

  • Closed captions with Captivate 5

Although, I went through the help part and some of the earlier discussion it didnt solve my problem. I would simply like to include sub-titles (close-captions) on my slide. these are the instructions I followed:
Select the check boxes in the closed captions column and corresponds to the notes you want to convert to closed captions.
    Click Closed Captioning.
In the Closed Captioning of the Slide Audio dialog box, adjust the start time and end time for the caption.
Click the + icon to add additional closed captions. Click the ‘-’ icon to remove closed captions.
Click CC Project Settings to change the font, size, color, background, and the number of lines in which the captions must be displayed.
the thing is: although when I click on 'Captions & Slide Notes...' under 'Slide Audio' , the text seems to be included only under the Slide Notes and not under the Captions. And it does not allow me to copy/paste the text under the Captions tab. When I try checking the preview, the sub-titles are not visible.
I know I am working in the right area but just need a hint so I can finally have the closed captions. Screen shots would really help too:)
    Thanks.
