Missing codec FCP exported Qtime .mov

I'm having a problem viewing some .mov files due to a missing codec.  A contractor delivered me video content from a recent event on an external hard drive. The files he sent me are .mov files that he exported from Final Cut Pro using a DVCPRO HD (720p60), linear PCM, Timecode codec.  I want to be able to view these files through Quicktime on my machine, but I don't use FCP.
I tried installing the Apple prores decoder, as another thread here seemed to indicate this might solve my issue, but when I ran the installer, it said a newer version fo the decoder was already installed on my machine. Is there any straightforward way to download/install the codec I need to view these files without shelling out for FCP?

  • FCP "Export - QuickTime Movie" gamma shift

Above is an example of what happens when I do a direct export in Final Cut Pro, using the Export -> QuickTime Movie function.  As you can see, the image is significantly brighter and the colors are a little more washed out (this image isn't particularly colorful, but trust me, it washes them out).  I always thought the Export -> QuickTime Movie meant the image would not be compressed--that it was a straight export using the sequence settings.
The image you see above was shot natively in ProRes 422 (HQ) using an Arriflex Alexa.  It has never been transcoded.  The bottom image is what it looks like using Export -> QuickTime Movie.  Totally unacceptable for a piece of professional software, if you ask me.
I can't express how infuriating this is, to have everything looking perfect in FCP and then exporting only to have it look like garbage.  I've been able to play with gamma correction a bit and have gotten it PRETTY close to the original look, but this seems like a horrible workaround.
Anyone else know why this is happening?  Is there a fix for this?
I'm working with FCP 6.0.6 and QuickTime 10.1.

    Sure thing, Meg.
Here's a source clip with "approximate" gamma correction:
"Approximate" gamma correction makes the image look flatter within Final Cut Pro than it actually is.
Now, the very same clip and frame, but with gamma set to "Accurate" :
Now, things are switched.  The exported image looks flatter than the source clip within FCP.
Here's another tidbit of info--the frame from my first post was professionally color graded and exported as a self-contained movie--so there were no filters, FCP or otherwise, being applied there.  But the difference is just night-and-day to me.

  • Exported Qtime Movie does not (at all) match edited sequence

I am really stumped on this one, guys.
I have a simple FCP project.  It's 1 sequence, 2 video files and 1 music file.  3minute 30 second video.
Can't get much simpler than this.
My problem is that whether I export the sequence to QT movie, OR I export it to compressor, what is coming out on the other end is really NOTHING like the edited sequence I have playing (correctly) in my single sequence timeline.
QT and Compressor export videos are identically wrong: The edit points are wrong, the video segments that are being referenced are wrong and the timings are all wrong.  I tried clearing all the markers out of the timeline (no dice).
It's as if FCP is playing the sequence correctly, as edited, and then is using some other editing timeline for the final output and I can't figure out what's going on.
    - My project has 1 sequence which I am trying to export.
    - There are basically 2 reference video files (raw files) that I am using as source material.  Each file was shot at 24ap, and I imported them correctly at 29.97fps into a 24p timeline using advanced 2:3:3:2 pulldown.  They play correctly in the timeline and I know the settings are right because I have exported several DVDs in 24p before using exact same settings.  The exported video here LOOKS "right" but the edits are totally wrong.
    - Each of these video files has been "marked" by start/stop times via "mark" into segments. (In the browser on the left) One file has about 40 segments, the other has about 6 segments - based off the start and stop times captured during recording.
    - I dragged the segments into the timeline to start my editing.  (I have done this before and it worked fine on export) The segments all played correctly in the timeline from both raw video sources.
    - I used the razor tool to cut the video segments down to sub-segments of video I actually want to use. (edits)  I discarded the audio portions of the clips because I am not using them. (but the video edits remain)
    - I have 1 audio track, (music) and I am not using the audio tracks from the video. (Deleted those segments from timeline)
    Additionally:
    - The edited sequence plays back PERFECTLY.  Every shot, cut, etc is right where I want it, and it plays in the sequence window exactly the way I want it to export.  No errors, no glitches, nothing.
    - The music plays back fine
    - I checked to make sure there were no "hidden" video tracks or video tracks on top of one another.
    - There are no "render errors".  Everything appears to be rendered, but I went ahead and rendered it again anyway.
    - There are no "missing media" files.  As far as I can tell, all of the project's media files are connected properly and I didn't move any files.
    - I have tried restarting FCP.  Didn't help.
    - I have tried rebooting the system.  Didn't help.
My timeline is set to 24p.  (23.98)
Up to this point I have had no issues exporting from FCP either to QT nor to Compressor.  Everything prior to this file exported exactly as it played in the main sequence.
This time, the sequence plays correctly, but the export is totally wrong, and I have no idea how to "fix" it because eveything in my sequence timeline is CORRECT.  Ugh!  If this is what can happen to a simple video clip, what happens when you are editing a MOVIE????
Is there a way to "reset" FCP to force it to check media connections and re-render everything from scratch?
    Any other suggestions?
    (FCP 7.0.3)
    Thanks!

    ALMOST Solved:
Well, I haven't given up yet, and I am one step closer to solving the problem (almost there), but still need some help.
My workflow is really simple (and obviously wrong):
    - Create new project
    - Import source video
    - Use DV Start/Stop Detect to mark source video into video segments
    - Drag resulting segments of the source video to the timeline (all at once, in order)
    - Use razor tool to edit segments (cutting out unneeded footage, arranging edits etc.)
    - Select edited sequence
    - Export (Quicktime or compressor)
    - There is nothing wrong with the source files.  I have used them in other projects just fine.
    - The problem IS with the way I am editing, and specifically it has to do with using the razor blade tool and using it on segments of video.  not clips, segments of clips.
To test this, I created a brand new FCP file, imported my raw footage files into the clips browser (like normal).  Then, I selected all of the clips and chose "mark\DV start top detect".  Lastly I dragged all 3 sets of segments (each video has been broken down into segments) into the timeline.  Without doing ANY other editing, I rendered the current timeline.
This time, the segments all exported into the resulting Quicktime movie exactly as they sit on the timeline, CORRECTLY.  What is playing now in Quicktime matches exactly what is on the timeline.  This proves that there isn't anything wrong with my source files nor my exporting codec.
So, my problem is using the razor tool on video segments.  This is a timing and timeline issue.  (You are right, Bogie!)
The really annoying part about all of this is that the sequence plays CORRECTLY in the output window!  If FCP would just export my sequence the same way it is playing it back to me on the timeline, there would be no problem, but it doesn't.
For whatever reason, cutting a video segment on the timeline does not tell the FCP render engine where the new "edit" points are within the video segment - and that's probable the wrong terminology.  The edited video sequence looks correct and plays correctly in the project window, but it doesn't export to QT (or compressor) the way that it looks because FCP is ignoring the razor edits.
For whatever reason, FCP insists on using only the original DV start and stop points in the timeline as defined by the orignal segments that have been dragged to the timeline.   In other words, FCP is using the DV "start/stop" points, as was defined by marking prior to dragging the segments to the timeline as the timing used to export to quicktime.
OK, I GET IT.  FCP doesn't like me mucking around with timecode of video segments!
So, what's the work around or correct way to do this?
At one point I was able to make independant video clips out of all of my segments, but I can't remember exactly how to do it.
I'm going to try that next, drag all the resulting video clips to the timeline and try again.
    Back to the drawing board....

  • Missing Codec for Avid QT Movie

I have some QT movies that were exported from Avid (on Mac OSX) about three years ago. The files played fine on my G5 after adding the Avid Meridien codecs to my Library. Now I have upgraded to an Intel MBP and I can't get video (only audio) from these movies even after downloading and installing the Avid Codec package for Intel Macs. I can't even get the video to play in VLC - says its missing the AvidAVDJCodec.component - even though that is one of the codecs currently in the Library!
Please help. Most of these movies are part of my portfolio and I need to access them. Thanks.

The Apple Intermediate Codec is just that. An "intermediate" step in the movie making process from the camera "source" format to a format that is editable. Most common is MPEG-2 (camera source).
Once in the intermediate format nearly any machine can do the editing (even if they can't play the file without dropping frames) in QuickTime Player.
Your older machine and its older graphics card are probably the cause when working with the 24fps rate.
You would probably get a better, more thorough, answer by posting in the Final Cut or Express Discussions pages.

What do you think is the problem?

  • FCP export of rendered seq: some 'offline media' warnings in exported file

    Hi,
We had an issue last weekend with a file that was exported from FCP:
    - sequence was fully rendered in FCP
    - export Quicktime movie (not a QTref)
    - the exported file had an almost 1minute red 'media offline' warning in the middle of the file
    - when we checked the sequence again at that sport, all the media was still there and all was fully rendered
    - we did another export and all was fine ...
Anyone that had has this issue ?

Not particularly, but have you tried trashing all renders, then re-rendering?
It's possible the sequence was seeing a render file (but not connecting to it on export), when in actuality the clip/media is in fact off-line.
Give it a shot if you haven't and let us know.
Might also fill us in on details about your system and media you're working with.

  • Best Codec for exporting animations with alpha channel from FCP timeline

Whats the best codec for exporting animations (hopefully using loseless compression) that will retain alpha channel, and use the current sequence settings for fps and size?
Currently Im exporting image sequences, but I'd prefer a wrapper.. I don't know much about the 'Animation' export codec.. I did notice that set to current size had some funky value of 753x450 or something.. instead of my current project size of 1920x1080...
Anyhow.. Just seeing what others are doing..
basically Im reading out some titles that I'll end up dropping over video later.. but since they render out so slowly (**** lower 3rds is slow) Im trying to get a jump on the process..
    Tx..

PNG should do it. I think PNG is lossless (that's what they say, anyway). But realistically, if you use PNG, Animation, or JPG2000 set on highest quality, I'd dare you to tell a difference.
I use PNG because it's supposedly lossless, renders twice as fast as Animation in a FCP timeline, and is usually about half the size.
If you use "Export Using Quicktime Conversion", you will need to check all of the settings manually to make sure they match your sequence settings. This is always true, no matter what codec you use.
If that sounds risky, your other option is to go into your sequence settings and change the codec to the one you want to render to (this will probably turn your whole timeline red), and then choose Export -> Quicktime movie.

  • 16x9 aspect ratio lost after FCP export to QT movie

I initially complained about the same problem when exporting from Motion to QT movie, then importing in FCP. This was fixed, and I really enjoy it.
I work 99% in DV anamorphic and all my Applications are set this way. It bothers me however that I lose my anamorphic aspect ratio when I export from FCP to Quicktime movie. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
I hope this will be fixed in the next patch as it waists a lot of time correcting it manually. I often export from FCP and into QT Pro, fix aspect ratio and then off to the web. If anyone knows of a better way, I would appreciate the help.

No, you're not doing anything wrong - this is a quirk in the way that FCP writes anamorphic QT movies when using the DV codecs.
As you've discovered, the flag is not recognized by QT Player unless you export via QT Conversion and either set the display size manually or, in QT 7.1.0 or higher, select 16:9 output in your Movie Settings.
    Sorry if that's no help...

  • FCP WON4T OPEN THE TIMELINE. QT  PROBLEM , MISSING CODECS

    thx for the reply,
i tried to downgrade QT version because of my MC soft that supports only 7.3. just got FCP 6 that, came with QT 7.5.5.
i trashed many QT files, hoping to prevent any conflicts with 7.3 (like in the old days)
now i can't even open a seq in FCP. project opens fine but with no timeline and only the viewer window.
when i click on a seq i get this message. "can't find the codec. "you may use a compression mode without the good card" (i'm translating from french).
    any idea?
that'll teach me to go back and forth bet avid and fcp. gotta pick one.
    thx again

hi there and thx for the help.
here's what a pop window said when i went to seg/settings "missing the 1:1 10 bit compressor", then the seq setting window appeared and i changed the codec to mpeg-4. the TL and canvas reappeared. i do have to render the video tracks.
here's what the QT movie footage infos says: "uncompressed 10bit 4.2.2 integer (Big Endian) Timecode. in the timeline when i check the properties it doesn't say anything other than it's ntsc ccir 601 26,9 mo/s nothing next to compressor unlike other shots.
thx a lot, at least i got my tl back.
how should i set my seq settings when i have different sources so i don't have to render all the time?
do i have to reinstall fcp6 to get these missing codec back or reinstall the os . can i just do an ARCHIVE AND INSTALL?
    thx

  • Suddenly bad FCP exports...is it the codec?

Hi everyone. I'm on a work G5, so the specs below do not apply to the system I am on right now.
FCP is updated to 5.1.4 on here.
I've been making regular FCP exports everyday and as "Current Settings" and unselected "Make Movie Self-Contained". One day it just gives me bad exports to where the beginning and end are normal, but the middle is bad. It looks like it's stuck on a few frames and flashes. Is this the codec? Either way, any advice?
    Thank you!

Hard to tell what's going on without seeing the footage.  Progressive footage will have a slightly jerkier (is that a word?) look than interlaced footage particularly in horizontal movement.  That may be what's happening.
Make sure that your field dominance is set to none through out your workflow.
Also, how are you monitoring in fcp?  If you're viewing on a video monitor via a card like the aja or blackmagic, and you're not seeing the problem, then there's probably something wrong in your export process.
If you have a short shot you can send me in the original format where the problem is noticeable I'll take a quck look.  My email is in my profile.

  • Export Quicktime movie in FCP comes out as a Final Cut Pro Movie File

Does anyone know why when I Export Quicktime movie in FCP it comes out as a Final Cut Pro Movie File? I can still play it in Quicktime and it's possible to set the Quicktime Player as the default software, but it still says in my finder window that it is a Final Cut Pro Movie File.
Does anyone know if there are any settings for the clip to come out as a Quicktime Movie instead? Thank you!

+"The studio apps "brand" their exports. Actually kind of useful...+
In the words of the venerable Forest Gump, "Useful is as useful does" ... or something like that.
I actually use similar "icon" techniques in other areas of my workflow. But most of the time I just modify the file title for quick ID - I also use dashes & underscores to get things to stand out and stay at the top of lists etc.
But QT is my Go-To App for quick media reference and I have it set up to play almost all types off media when double clicked. I started doing it years ago when iTunes opened up every time I wanted to check a few seconds of an mp3 file.
I guess the best solution would have been for Apple to leave the "export FinalCut movie" option intact and simply add in an "export Quicktime movie" option as well. Or maybe add another drop down option for the tagging (branding).
At least we would have been able to make the workflow choices in-the-box rather than doing it with the OS.
    Andy Neil,
I think using the OS is the better option rather than re-compressing your movie just so you can double click into QT.

  • FCP 7 issue with exporting reference movie?

I've used FCP 6 to export reference movies -- no problem.  Now, using FCP 7.0.3 , I can't seem to export a reference movie period.  On old projects, where I've done reference movies, no luck.  On newer ones created in FCP 7, I render everything -- I mean everything, no luck.  The 'not self-contained box' is unchecked.  I even tried making a brand new project, importing a 10 second clip requiring no rendering.  FCP still won't  export a reference movie; it keeps making a regular movie clip.  I really need this function to make DVDs.  Any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong?

First, let me correct myself regarding the QT reference movie.  My movies show a poster frame rather than a preview as I mentioned in my previous post.
It's important that all of the items from the Sequence menu are checked.

  • FCP 7 crashing on render and when exporting quicktime movie & rendering

    Hi Guys,
I recently upgraded to Lion and am still using Final Cut Studio 3.
I have a 1.37min sequence which i wanted to export and burn the DVD. My normal workflow for this is:
    - Export/quicktime movie/make self contained
    - Open compressor and convert
But FCP 7 keeps on crashing on export, in fact is very unstable recently. It also crashes on rendering, and quite often when im editing.
    - Final Cut Studio 7.03
    - Footage is HDV 1080 50i
    Any ideas on a solution??

Are you converting those clips to ProRes in ClipWrap? Or keeping them native? You MUST convert them to ProRes.
The NXCam came out just before 7.0.3.  FCP did update to mesh with that camera, but it's still rocky. And now that FCP 7...legacy...has been discontinued, there will be no more updates. But you have ClipWrap so that should be fine.  As long as you convert to ProRes.

  • HDV and FCP Export to Quicktime Movie

    Hi.
Should I be able to "Export to Quicktime" a 90-minute FCP timeline and expect no hiccups? I keep trying and my Quicktime file has an occasional slight jump from one frame to another when I view it. This happens about once every 2-3 minutes.
Is the file too large to play back (13gig)? Do I not have a powerful enough computer or graphics card?
My goal is to play the movie using DVI-out to a theatre's DVI-in, so the film can be viewed in the best quality possible. I was hoping to output to a Quicktime, dump it to my MacBook and play it using the DVI-out.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
    Specs:
~ MacPro Dual-Core Intel Xeon 2.66 GHz, 1 GB Ram
~ NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT graphics card
~ Timeline: 720p at 24fps HDV native video
    ~ Outputting to Quicktime Uncompressed
    ~ MacBook: 2.16 GHz, 1 GB Ram
~ MacBook Video Card: Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory4

Choose file/export/QuickTime Movie, and check on the "make self contained" option. Turn off the "recompress all frames" option. This is the best export there is for any source media format HDV or not... Might try exporting just a bit, and see if this movie will play back ok on a MacBook first though using the DVI out to another monitor... Don't change formats. Making it any other format will cause quality loss, or create a file so large that the macbook won't play it... I'd also suggest you put it on a fw drive to play back from the MacBook.
If it were me though, I'd not trust the Macbook to play it back OK... just not enough horsepower IMHO.

  • Audio and Video option missing from Export Quicktime Movie Include

Today as I was exporting a clip, I noticed that the Audio and Video option was missing from the Include drop down. I only have the options of Left, Center, Right.
I highlight the sequence, control E (or File>Export>Quicktime Movie) and the Save window comes up. The Settings drop down is the same, the Markers: drop down is the same, but the Include: has the options of Left, Center and Right. I thought the Video and Audio dropdowns were always there. I hate to admit it, but I have not paid attention to them in a while. Getting old I guess.
