Missing com.apple.mrt.plist
Just realized it's missing. Have looked in /System/Library/LaunchDaemons. Shouldn't this have been installed with 10.6.8? (I installed from the combo.) Have searched the entire drive using EasyFind, but nowhere to be found.
When files are downloaded through the following applications:
Entourage
Safari
Mail
Firefox
Thunderbird
iChat
and other programs that use LSQuarantine
then the files are tagged with an extended attribute called com.apple.quarantine. When the downloaded file is run (automatically or manually), this triggers the use of Launch Services. Launch Services then triggers the XProtect scan of the file.
Unfortunately, if variants of these threats find their way on to your system via an application that doesn't set the com.apple.quarantine extended attribute, for example via:
Skype
Adium
BitTorrent
and Finder (via USB keys, network share, etc ...)
XProtect is never triggered and thus these threats can run unfettered. However OSX/iWorks-A was distributed through infected torrents and so wouldn't be blocked by XProtect.
Users who have Sophos Anti-Virus installed with the on-access scanner enabled will never see this new XProtect functionality - the malware is detected by Sophos long before Launch Services gets to search for it.

Missing com.apple.alf.plist, and can't re-create it
All of my browsers are blocking content I believe due to a missing com.apple.alf.plist file. I've ran Repair Disk and Repair permissions, but it doesn't bring it back. Is there a manual way I can re-create the file?
OK, Since I haven't gotten any responses about this it must be a complicated issue. Just as a quick check could some of you good people out there look at the "Get Info" window for the systempreferences.app and see if your permissions look like mine? I'm still having trouble with the firewall settings not acting as expected such as apps and processes that I have approved/denid connection access not showing up in the firewall pane of system preferences and having to reapprove each startup. Thank you in advance for any help on this.

Missing com.apple.iCal.plist
My library seems to be missing the com.apple.iCal.plist file. How can I get it back?
The user library, where the user preference files are stored, is hidden on Mountain Lion. Use Finder's Go/Go to Folder menu item to navigate to /Users/yourid/Library/Preferences.

Missing com.apple.dashboard.plist files
Just upgraded (Tiger 10.4.12 to Leopard 10.5.2). Everything groovy except for Dashboard which will not launch because there is no com.apple.dashboard.plist file in my Library.
Any remedies? Or am I going to have to start again and reinstall Leopard to get Dashboard working?I did a complete ERASE and INSTALL upgrade, so all the former Tiger settings were wiped, or should have been.
Prior to the install I backed up my own files to an external.
The very first thing I did after the install was to run Time Machine and back up the whole system to a second external. This initial backup does not contain any dashboard plist files either, so it looks like they didn't install! -
Sidebar inoperable and missing com.apple.sidebarlists.plist file
My sidebar seems to be 'broken'. Originally I had a few extra folders added to it along with the usual drives and home folders etc, but whenever I tried to add another folder, or re-arrange the existing ones, it would simply revert back the next time I logged in.
I followed a few suggestions on here and deleted the com.apple.finder.plist file, and I looked for 'com.apple.sidebarlists.plist' on my computer, but couldn't find it - could this be the problem?
Having deleted the com.apple.finder.plist my sidebar has reverted to it's 'out of the box' form, but loses any customisation on restart - ie reverts back to it's default.
Annoying, since I use this feature a lot. Any suggestions, short of a full re-install?!!!Having this exact problem, and posted on it a while ago in this forum. Never found a solution that was short of reinstalling Snow Leopard.
I restored from a Time Machine backup once but of course that gave exactly the same behaviour.
I've finally decided to do something about it again after trying to live with it but I really need this function to speed up my workflow.
Similarly to the OP I have created separate accounts which do not suffer from the problem - they retain any customisations once restarted.
Also, I cannot find the com.apple.sidebarlists.plist file. I'm going to try the same steps suggested here and will report back - in the meantime however if you have managed to solve the problem another way I would be very interested.
I had thought that setting up a new account and transferring over all of my files might be the way to do it but am quickly running into issues (for example, transferring an iTunes library and retaining ratings / playcounts etc....). -
ICal refusing to open (com.apple.ical.plist file missing)
I have tried opening iCal and it refuses to open. The icon bounces on the dock, then asks if I want to report the issue to Apple. I have reported multiple times but I don't know how reporting it will help my iCal work again. (See below the dashed line for the error report.)
Since then, I have tried to replace iCal, but the software claims it cannot be installed on this machine.
I have tried to update my current iCal, but no updates are available.
I have browsed the forums and saw that some solutions were if HelveticaNeue was missing from my fonts. Got it.
And then I saw some threads about refreshing the com.apple.ical.plist... That's a problem. I don't have that file in my library at all. I can't seem to find any way to get it either. What can I do?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Com.apple.FontBook.plist file is missing. What should I do?
I looked in Library > Preferences when FontBook Kept Crashing, and com.apple.FontBook.plist is missing.
Wonder what caused it. What should I do to get it back?
I was organizing Fonts by category in FontBook and tossing out some junky free fonts I'd accidentally dropped into my Fonts folder weeks ago, just the day before FontBook started crashing. The .plist file you want is in user level not root.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.FontBook.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.FontBook.plist file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac then try Font Book.
If it crashes again, then it's not corrupted Font Book preferences.
See if you can do this before Font Book crashes.
With Font Book open, from the menu bar click Font Book > File > Restore Standard Fonts -
Com.apple.safari.plist missing in preferences folder
Hey everybody,
my safari has become unusably slow. I checked for solutions and found out I should delete the com.apple.safari.plist. So I browsed my preferences folder in the library for the file and could not find it. I checked my whole Library for any Safari related file and there was none.
Has anyone an explanation for this? I already reinstalled the OS which didn't change a thing.
I hope anybody can help me please
I am using a mid 2012 rmbp with 8gb ram, which has become a little laggy in general since the yosemite in updateUnfortunately, deleting the com.apple.safari.plist didn't solve my original problem. Safari is still so superslow sometimes. And then its fast again. But Chrome is always faster and immediately responding. I've run a test with Etresoft:

After upgrading to Mountain Lion, I repurchased Garageband and I can't get passed the complete installation. I've read through several posts that all reference the "com.apple.garageband.plist" solution. I don't seem to have the referenced .plist. Any solutions or suggestions?
Did you upgrade from SnowLeopard?
I can't get passed the complete installation
What exactly is happening? Is GarageBand trying to download over and over again?
all reference the "com.apple.garageband.plist" solution. I don't seem to have the referenced .plist.
The property list stores your preferences, but also the settings from the last run of the application. If that file is corrupted in some way, you might see third behaviour.
You must have this file, for it will be recreated automatically, if it is missing, or you have a permissions problem with your user library.
Perhaps you did look in he wrong place.
in MacOS 10.7. or later the User Library is hidden. To find the Preferences Files use the Finder's "Go" menu:
Quit GarageBand, if it is running.
Click onto you Desktop to bring the Finder forward.
In the Finder Menu press "Go" and hold down the "option/alt" key, until your user library appears in the drop-down menu
Select "Library" and in the Finder window that opens navigate to the "Prederences" folder; move com.apple.garageband.plist to the Desktop.
Log off and on again (don't skip that step!). Retry GarageBand and see if it GarageBand is now downloading the missing content properly.
If that does not fix the problem, post back and explain in more detail what the download problem is.
Why did you "repurchase" GarageBand? If you already owned GarageBand '11, it should be unnecessary.

Hi! I have 74k photo's in my iPhoto trash and it crashes when trying to empty. Clearly it's too much for the system to handle so after researching I downloaded 'Trashit!' which didn't help even if I selected one photo and dragged it to the trashit icon, not a single photo will delete from the iPhoto trash.
I've tried creating a new album but the photo's won't drag. I have tried deleting the com.apple.iPhoto.plist and done several timely rebuilds but I still can't find a way to empty the trash. I hope there's something really simple I'm missing here, any help appreciatediiPhoto is known to lock up if you try to delete a large number of photos at a time. Here are a couple of ways to get out of the predicament you're in:
1 - go into iPhoto's General preference pane and uncheck the Show item counts checkbox:
and then try emptying the iPhoto Trash bin again. It's iffy however.
2 - If that fails and you don't use the Rating stars you can do the following: select all of the photos in the trash and Control-click to bringup the contextual menu. There will be the 5 stars for the ratings. Select either 5 or 1 to apply that rating to the photos.
Next create a smart album with the criteria:
selecting the number of start you applied to those in the Trash bin.
Move the photos from the Trash bin to the Library and the Smart Album will immediately be populated with those photos.
You can now select about 100 photos or so at a time and use the Command+Option+Delete key combination to move them back to the Trash bin and empty it. Repeat with groups of about 100 or so photos till they are all deleted. Then delete the Trash bin in the Dock to completely remove them from your hard drive.

Hi Guys! I really need help here, Im a Web Graphic Designer and i really use alot of Memory on my mac ( i have 8gb ram ). Everyone told me that disabling the memory swapping would really help alot and tried to disable it. All of my friends taught me on how to disable it by enerting
" sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist " on my Terminal
It really works on other MacBPro but i ge this error message
" launchctl: Couldn't stat("/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist"): No such file or directory nothing found to unload "
I tried to look at the folder or directory there is no com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist and its confusing me cause the memory swapping is still working without the com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist.
Can someone help or tell me how to fix this? I would really much appreciate it.I never heard of anyone doing what you are attempting!
If you have so much memory as you claim I don't see the advantage of running the system in this non-standard way since you probably won't need to write to a swapfile anyway. And you are asking for trouble if it does need it and it's not there.
Finally, I submit you must have missed or or looked in the wrong place. In terminal cut/paste the following:
ls /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.dynamic_pager.plist
It shouldn't report an error. -
Hi, I still have problems reinstalling Final Cut Pro even though I followed these steps.
Reason why I have to reinstall is because I have repaired my Macbook Pro hard drive at a Mac Authorized Repair.
Short history of repair and my Final Cut Pro installation:
1. Macbook Pro stopped working, sendt it for repair. Had the Final Cut Pro installed,
2. Desided to try a MiniMac and recovered my backup with Time Machine, got the Final Cut Pro working.
3. Got my Macbook Pro back from repair, did backup on this one as well. But this time only the files not the Applications.
4. Removed the files as mentioned in HT5149. Didn´t find "com.apple.motionapp.plist" to remove though, but the others I found.
5. When I try to install Final Cut Pro from App Store, it downloads the application as planned. But after download it won´t show in the Application folder nor in the downloads folder, nor will it start an installation prosess. If I pause the installation in App Store, I can see the Final Cut Pro icon in my Dock. (But, as mentioned, after installation it won´t show neither here or in the Applications folder).
Any suggestions on what I should try now?
Thanks for any reply, I´m in deep water here...Sounds like there is a file you're not getting. Never do a removal manually. It's so time consuming and a pain. There's a very easy and fast way to do this, safely, properly.
Get the free "Final Cut Remover" app from Digital Rebellion (dot com), use this to remove FCP X.
Reboot the Mac.
Download from scratch.
If you're not seeing FCP X in your app folder, run Disk Utility to Repair all drives.
If that doesn't help, try running Disk Warrior from Altsoft to repair the directories on all drives. -
(This is cross-posted from the 10.5 Ins and Setup forum [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8902103#8902103], per the suggestion of a reader.)
In 10.5.4, I added /usr/sbin/syslogd to the exception list in /usr/libexec/ApplicationFirewall/com.apple.alf.plist.
This allowed me to keep the mediocre application firewall set to "allow only essential services" and still allow my router to send syslog messages to a log on my Mac.
I upgraded to 10.5.6 (straight from 10.5.4). Since the upgrade, it appears that the application firewall ignores the additional exception entry I added.
I've tried moving the exception entry up (replacing the one for configd), but it doesn't matter. I already know about /Library/Preferences/com.apple.alf.plist, so you don't need to suggest that I delete it. It's re-created (as a binary) each time you unload/load the launchctl for syslogd, and it does appear to use the file in /usr/libexec/ApplicationFirewall/com.apple.alf.plist.
The only two ways I've found to allow syslogd through are:
1. disable the app firewall (choose "allow all incoming connections" (not my preferred solution)
2. choose "set access for specific services and applications", which unfortunately allows all the specified applications (and probably allows Apple's hidden list of exceptions that includes things like World of Warcraft and Skype). The hidden list opens the machine to a greater number of attacks from trojan software, and I'd rather have the system locked down, not opened up.
Does anyone know how I can recover the 10.5.4 functionality, which allowed me to add syslogd as an exception, instead of adding it to the GUI list of applications?I also want to receive log information from my Draytek Router I found a reference in the Draytek forum see:
http://www.forum.draytek.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=12009&highlight=syslog+mac
however when I updated the
com.apple.syslogd.plist
the required information did not get thru to the Draytek Syslog program.
I am also using 10.5.6 -
Mail wouldnt let me send outgoing mail claiming there to be an error whilst there was an outgoing connection. So I thought to completely reset the entire app and found a forum that told me to delete something >_> And so I deleted this ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and now nothing will launch. And well. Nothing is backed up. Im an idiot. ;___; I just want to go back to my chalk and slate. TECHNOLOGY HATES ME. Please help me.
Hi Bill,
You could also try com.apple.helpviewer.plist (in ~/Library/Preferences). Have you noted whether this is system-wide or restricted to your user account? I'd create a test account (if you don't have another on your system) and try the help menus. If they're messed up over there, then fixing things in your user folder won't help. The only system resource I could find that seems remotely relevant is /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.helpdata.plist, but I'd be verrrry careful about messing around with stuff in your System folder.
Hope that helps!

My mac 10.8 does no have the file, com.apple.desktop. plist I wentto lIbrary, preference and look for it and it is not where in my mac. I also launch time machine and file is no where on my Mac. How do I get this file back?
thanksSystem files are hidden by default in Finder now, search for what you want then click the little + button on the top right of the bar that appears when you do a search. A new bar comes up and click the first box (that says "Kind"), change it to "System Files". Then change the box that says "aren't included" to "are included" and your file should show up.
