Missing custom brushes, shapes, gradients etc

Hi.
Whenever I'm working in Photoshop CC, is it always showing me the standard materials that was along the program when I bought it.
No matter what I make myself and save it or I download online some custom brushes, shapes, gradients, patterens, styles and so on, they won't show up in the program?
When I check my Photoshop folder on my computer is everything in the right folders, it just doesn't wanna appear in my program..
How will I get all my custom materials back? Both what I made myself and what I got by others?
I'm using Photoshop CC on a Windows 8, if that matters..

Check the file permissions on the relavant *.abr etc. files. PS may simply not be able to access them. that£s of course assuming you imported them properly in the first place...

  • How do you create a custom brush "shape"?

I want to create an effect of a large paintbrush moving across the screen.
Is there any way to create a custom brush "shape" to do this using the Paint tools? I can't find anything obvious in the help on how to do this.
    Thx
    Kevin

Or, if you have Trapcode Particular, define your shape as a custom particle. The painting could then be controlled by animating the emitter position or defining a motion path by ways of a 3D light as an helper item.

  • Custom Brush; saving/retrieving

    Hello Al!.
I just discovered CUSTOM BRUSHES in the newest vers. of Flash CC.  Thanks, Adobe.  Been waiting for 15 years for something like this!
    QUESTION:
How do I save and retrieve my custom brush?
(I tried sync-ing through preferences, but upon reopening the program there is NO CUSTOM brush).  This has to be a mistake, right?  I mean there's NO WAY they'd  implement this feature then not be able to retrieve the brush later in another "session".
    Any guidance appreciated
    Lippy

    Hi Lippy,
The custom brushes are preserved for later use. The newly created custom brush shapes are getting added to the Brush Shape drop down and can be synced to the cloud based on your Sync Options in your application Preferences>Sync Settings>Sync Options > Custom Brushes
Please learn more about Creating / Editing / Syncing Custom Brushes at Flash Professional Help | Custom Brushes
    Thanks!

  • Brush, Pattern, Font, Custom Shape Tool, gradient, etc organization

On record, I have over 1,000 brushes, over 1,000 fonts, and I'm making other resources on the fly. I have an issue here: I can't find anything!!
(I also have a second issue with resources and crashes, but I'll get to that later.)
Is it that hard to ask Adobe to put in some font organization, tags for brushes and a search engine for them? Sometimes it's a pain trying to find the right font, but say, I think, "Hmm.. I want a font that is remotely Western, probably serif" there is no way in Adobe Photoshop to get through all of those fonts in a timely manner which means I'm spending about 2 hours shuffling through the fonts trying to find the right one. Sure there is a panel where you can select your favorite ones, but that's not by category... there is no sane way to find the font just for you.
Same thing for brushes. Often the problem with brushes is that people lose where they've come from, meaning no credit to the brush maker and when you want, say, fairies because you need some, you can't remember where the hell they are. And if you do, you have tons of brushes to sort through. People have a compulsion to not label their brush sets properly, which drives me nuts because they also expect you to give them credit. How about Adobe gives them a leg up? Give them a space not only to name the brush, but give it tags, a name and a website where it was found at. (Not required, but can be used or even expanded down.) And give it search capability. (So I type in birds, then the brushes menu retrofits to show all brushes with the tag of birds, I delete the search line, all the brushes come back, I type in standard. All of the round brushes come up, etc. I type in spiritsighs and all of her brushes come up... and so on). Gradients, etc should be the same.
Sure you can clear your brushes, but do you know how many brush packs I have to sort through, then load to get the right one? --;; A pain. (Plus brush packs are often lost in computer crashes, harddrive wipes, etc.)
So I'm asking for a way to organize and find these resources more easily, with better searching abilities, because while the guys on Photoshop TV can afford to dump their probably thousands of brushes for a demo, isn't it kind of odd that they often say, "Where is it? "Ah there it is" in their tutorials? They've apologized at least a dozen times for the "ah there it is" and the "I'm sorry Adobe doesn't give a font organizer", but here is a crappier alternative.
I'd like this in other programs in the CS suite too. Especially the Historyless Illustrator (Illustrator needs History) and InDesign. InDesign should have had font management a long time ago--most of it is about type setting anyway.
    Second part:
Crashes. You've spent 2 hours making the right brush, stayed past your bedtime, made the brush, and voila, Photoshop crashes. You've just lost 2 hours of work, your files, which in your artistic daze you forgot to save and any chance of getting that brush file back.
So I propose three fixes which are already out there in Computer land that Photoshop hasn't implemented. (And other Adobe products should also implement).
    1. The auto save. When the user isn't using the screen, or at x intervals it will ask the user if they want to save, which is settable by the user (prompting and the auto-saving). Microsoft has it, Most Mac programs have it, Adobe Photoshop should also have it.
    2. Generated back up files. At some intervals, instead of a full save, in case of a crash, Adobe Photoshop, when prompted will create back up files.
    3. A way for Photoshop and Illustrator when creating brushes, etc to auto-save said brush when the brush is created, rather than generating a pack. Like it updates a file in Photoshop when one creates a brush. This means it will hard save to the computer and one doesn't have to make a brush pack or shut down photoshop to get the brush to save. I think this would save a lot of people heartbreak.
Minor peeve, but when I hit undo often it jumps to the previous layer I was at. I'd like an option to turn this "feature" off.

not sure if anybody mentioned  this.
tumasoft.com has a product for viewing and organizing your  brushes patterns etc. 25 bucks.
This should be native to Photoshop rather than from an external program. It's in many other programs,so I don't understand why Photoshop doesn't have a system native to it.
To be blunt: If that has happened more than once to you and you still  don’t save useful, newly created brushes regularly you should, in my  opinion, improve your workflow.
Saving a brush into a set should be doable  in something like 15 seconds, less if you use Keyboard Shortcuts.
Even  less than that if one automates the task with a Script (which could  then be invoked either via a Keyboard Shortcut or Configurator Panel).
Let  me know if you want to give it a try.
You misunderstand me. I save the brush into the brush panel, and I may have the brush in up and working, but to save the brush permanently, you have one of these options:
    1. Quit Photoshop between each brush made. The Save Brush Preset was NOT a permanent solution. It should be automatically saved to a file. Such as "all". Illustrator has a similar feature, though this really needs to be streamlined for Illustrator as well.
    2. Save as a brush pack. However, if you have a bunch of brushes planned, this becomes a pain to do. This means out of say the 100 brush packs you have to find it every single time and add it and even if Photoshop crashes, the brushes you saved won't show up in the brush menu, because Photoshop doesn't remember any of the brushes you made until you quit Photoshop. This means then, if you're in the middle of making a brush and Photoshop crashes, you have to bring up said brush pack.
Do you really make brushes? 'cause I do. I make lots of brushes and it annoys me to no end that when I save the brush to the brush panel it's not a permanent save, but temporary. It should be permanent and I shouldn't have to shut down Photoshop to get it to save automatically to the Photoshop Brush palette.
I spend a lot of time refining my brushes by testing them, making them, and then testing them again. When I get the brush perfect, and find that something big has happened, I expect the brushes I saved to the brush palate should have saved permanently. But test it... You can force quit Photoshop, after saving to a brush to the brush palate and find that it's not at the end of the brush palate anymore. This is wacky and should be fixed. I view it as an internal bug rather than a "feature" i.e. something they didn't think about when they gave users the ability to create their own brushes. This is very programable as other programs can do it and as you pointed out it, it is minor. Especially with the advent of workable backup files, it has become ten times easier. Since Photoshop remembers on shut down, it may be even more minor--just shifting some code from the shut down process to the "save to Brush palate" process. I wouldn't mind say 5-10 seconds more of waiting while it saves if the  save ends up in a permanent save.
But as for organizing Brush Presets  and Brush-name search capabilities Photoshop could indeed do with some  improvements. (I still work with CS4, so I don’t know what changes  exactly CS5  brought in that respect.)
Fonts on the other hand … I suspect  the risks connected with implementing any expanded font-capabilities in  Photoshop may be significant.
Font organizers already exist. And programs have implemented them with success without hindering the work flow. I'm proposing this in addition to the "favorites" and the type-in pull down menu, not instead of it. As there are working examples, I doubt it will be that difficult to mock up. This isn't like a new fangled idea--so making it isn't as difficult. It should have been in In Design a long, long time ago... All the Adobe Products need one. I wouldn't even mind if it was an external program that worked with the suite. (Similar to Font Book for Mac with the Coco Products)

  • How do I make a custom brush image in a gradient color scheme in Photoshop Elements 12?

I want to make a custom brush image in a gradient color scheme.  I know how to change the hue jitter, but I want to "paint" the image with a gradient between two colors.  For example, I have an image of an octopus that I have used to create a custom brush.  I want the top of the octopus to be hot pink and gradually fade into a deep orange at the end of the tentacles.  Everything I've looked up just colors the background.  Thanks in advance!

    Try the following:
    Open the octopus image
Open a Gradient Map Adjustment layer above this. There are several preset gradients, but in my version of the program I don't see one with pink to orange.
When you double click on the gradient bar in the Adjustments palette, this will open up the Gradient Editor, where you can tailor the gradient to your specifications with color and opacity stops. (see below)
This will apply the gradient to the entire picture. However, the adjustment layer has a built-in mask (the white rectangle).
Left click on this and paint with a black brush to hide the gradient outside of the octopus. If you go too far, you can correct with a white brush.
Now, as to the Gradient map adjustment layer, here is how to configure it:

  • Add custom drawn shapes to Brush

In CC 2014, Flash allows you to create a "custom" brush of a slanted circle or square. A start, but I also need to use brushes with jagged or softer edges. If I could create a brush out of a vector image I've painted, then I could do more with the brush tool and create better artwork. Then users could share their unique brushes in an online community, all similar to Photoshop's already familiar/powerful brush workflow.

The custom brush tool does not currently allow creating a brush from a vector image. This document explains how you can use the custom brush tool functionality:

  • Setting up Custom Brushes and ToolSets

I created a custom panel using  configurator.  In that custom panel I created a pop-up panel button, but  the pop-up panel button doesn't trigger a pop up panel ? I want the pop  up panel to have two tabs one to save custom brushes and custom tool  settings, and those panels which save custom tool brushes and custom  tool settings, saved with the custom panel.
The results is  the custom tool panel that I created with the custom pop-up can be  loaded into photoshop as a extension with the custom tool brushes and  custom tool settings along with it, so it's not tied directly within  photoshop but rather with the extension, I hope I made myself clear.

    Hi,
When you export Configurator panel to photoshop, it will generate a file named "untitle-1.mxi", this is the Extension Manager package template.
Open it with a text editor you will see this piece of XML
        <files>
            <file source="content" destination="$panels/untitled-1"/>
        </files>
I think you can add something like these:

    <file source="mytools" destination="$tools"/>

  • How to transfer Painter 12 with my custom brushes from old iMac to a new iMac both running Mavericks

    Hi,
I just purchased a new iMac. Have Painter 12 on my older iMac and want to be able to transfer Painter 12, with my custom brushes to my new iMac. Tried Airdrop but got a message that it was damaged and that I should trash it. Does any know how to get  Painter 12 with all my custom brushes to my new machine? Both are running Mavericks.
    Thank you,
    Jim

    etresoft,
Thank you for your response. I did try to use Migration Assistant and I got as far as the two machines trying to communicate with each other. So I guess the answer to your question would be I tried, I failed and it worked until a certain point. I understand that there are other ways to connect the machines, I would have to see if I have the proper cables to do so. Airdrop did get data to my new machine and that tells me that they do see each other on the network. I do not know why they did not see each other via Migration Assistant. I assume that I could go to Corel's site and download Painter 12 to my new machine, ( my new machine does not have a disk drive ), but I will not have my custom brushes etc. and would have to totally make them up in the fresh install version and I am trying to avoid that.
You are probably correct in saying that Painter 12 probably needs a full reinstallation to work properly. Am I to assume that Migration Assistant will do a full reinstallation, including my custom brushes? I guess I am a little confused here.

  • Custom Brushes

I've downloaded and installed a bunch of free custom brushes from the Internet along with a few brushes I made. It is often difficult to know what the free ones will look like until fully installed.
I am looking for a way to select a bunch of them and delete them from my brush list. So far, I am only able to delete one at a time. I tried shift-clicking and Control-clicking to get multiples, but no luck. Any suggestions?
I'd also like to reorganize them so my favorite texture brushes are in one group and all my rough brushes in one group of brushes. (not physically a "group", but just placed side by side in the list). Is there a way to click and drag them around inside the list?
Lastly, It would be nice to color code my favorite brushes or brush styles, similar to the way you can color code actions. Is this possible?
I am working towards cleaning my brush set up and saving them to a brush set I can save and recall. So far, I am selecting a brush I like, then clicking an open spot at the bottom of the list and letting PS add the new brush with a new name. At that point, I am deleting the old one out of the list.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

I have about 400 brushes sets in my Presets>Brushes folder.
When I go to Preset Manager in an attempt to install one of those sets, the resulting list only shows the set numbers through the letter B.
How can I see the rest of them?
I don't want to install all of them at one time, I just want to be able to choose all of the sets.
How can I do this?  I already have Presets Viewer so I know which sets I want to load, I just can't see them in order to load them.
    Thanks in advance!
    Linda
    Edit added 10/22
One workaround that I have considered is to load all of the ones that I can see, remove them from the presets>brushes folder, load another batch, remove those, and so on.
Will removing them from the presets>brushes folder cause them to disappear from the available brushes in Presets Manager?
The downside of this is, of course, having way too many brushes to look through.
Alternatively, perhaps I could creat subfolders in Presets>Brushes, one for brushes starting with numbers, one for brushes starting with A, etc?

  • Custom Brush in color?

    Hello Folks,
Is there a way to create a custom brush in photoshop with a multiple color shape?  ( for instance you draw an ice cream cone with multiple colors and convert that to a brush )
The idea is to grab that custom brush and click to draw or paint the multiple color shape by just clicking once.  The clicking draws or paints that complete shape in color on the spot that you click.
Thanks in advance for your help!
    Bill

    Thanks for the reply Jeffrey.
Does anyone know of any other software that does this?  ( besides adobe illustrator ).

    HI all,
So I'm trying to make a custom brush. I have my brush defined from a Photoshop document. But I cannot find the settings for that brush. How can I adjust the scatter and spacing? Am I missing a menu or Settings pane?
by the way, I'm running Adobe Photoshop CS2 on Windows 7 Professional.

  • Photoshop: values for type, brush, crop, lasso etc tools broken on Leopard

I posted this in answer to another thread, but decided that it may be helpful to some Photoshop users if it had its own topic:
The following is a technote copied from Adobe's forums, regarding the performance of several menus for key tool settings in Photoshop CS3 running in Leopard:
*Changing values for type, brush, crop, lasso etc tools broken on Leopard*
    *Kirsten Harris - 08:58pm Nov 15, 2007 Pacific*
Adobe and Apple are working closely to provide a fix to a known issue running Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Photoshop CS3 Extended on Mac OS X Leopard (v10.5.1). Currently, when you enter values in numerical fields to set sizes for the brush, crop, marquee, lasso, type, and other Photoshop CS3 tools, those values revert to previously entered values when you try to apply them.
    # While we have identified workarounds for some of the affected tools, this issue prevents people from working as precisely and intuitively as they expect. Providing a fix to customers is a top priority. Please note the following: The fix will be provided through an update to Mac OS X Leopard. Consequently, it is not part of the Photoshop CS3 (10.0.1) update.
    # Apple is collaborating closely with us to get this fix incorporated into a Mac OS X Leopard update. No public schedule is available at this time, but both companies understand the urgency of this fix.
    # As soon as the appropriate update to Mac OS X Leopard is available, we will immediately alert our Photoshop users.
Affected Photoshop CS3 tools: Art History tool, Blur tool, Brush tool, Burn tool, Color Replacement tool, Clone tools (all), Crop tool, Dodge tool, Eraser tools (all), Gradient tool, Healing tools (all), History tool, Lasso tools (all), Line tool, Magic Wand tool, Marquee tools (all), Paint Bucket tool, Pencil tool, Polygon tool, Quick Selection tool, Red Eye tool, Rounded Rectangle tool, Sharpen tool, Smudge tool, Sponge tool, Slice tool, Type tool
Workaround for tools with sliders: Instead of typing in a number, use the sliders to change the value.
Workaround for tools with pop-up menus: Enter a value for the size but don’t press Return/Enter to apply the value. Instead, choose it from the top of the Size pop-up menu to commit it.
Workaround for tools which do not have sliders or pop-up menus: For certain tools, such as the Line tool, you may want to set up presets that you can load to set common sizes. Alternatively, you can restart Photoshop CS3 to clear the problem. You will then be able to enter values again. However, the issue typically re-surfaces quickly.
If additional details come to light, our tech doc Values in numerical fields in Photoshop CS3 revert to the previous value in Mac OS X v10.5.1 (Leopard) will be updated.

Well, that's interesting! Here I thought the problem with my CS1 was just that it was too old, running in Rosetta and all, and would be fixed when I get my Xmas treat of CS3. Wonder if that means when the fix comes from Apple it will also fix the same problem in CS1? Of course, by then I'll probably have CS3.... Thanks for posting this, I would have been mighty annoyed to have plonked down my 200 bucks only to discover that I had the same bugs.

  • How to "harden" a custom brush?

In the PAINTING/BRUSHES panel, I've created a custom brush by using the Brush Tip Shape options. I used a triangle brush and shaped like set of scattered triangles at 30 pixel diameter. Except the edges are very pixellated. The HARDNESS option on the panel is greyed out. I need the edges to be almost vector-like or sharp edges.
Under Brush Tip Shape, I've got Shape Dynamics and Scattering active. If that matters?!
When I click on some of the other Brush choices, sometimes the HARDNESS option is active. Sometimes it is greyed out. I don't know why the difference.
How can I get the HARDNESS option to be active for my custom brush?

    Hello!
That slider only works on the Stock round brushes that are meant to be softened.
As Christoph pointed it out, you would need to create a big, hard edged brush and reduce it.
You are maybe getting pixelated edges because the brush you created was small, then you upsized it.

  • Brushes and gradients, the making of..

    Hi folks,
could someone please direct me to tutorials etc on how to make brushes and gradients and how to install them? Cheers

You can't build dynamics (hue jitter, scatter, etc.) into them as you can in Photoshop but you can build brushes in Elements. The brush tip should be made using black if you want it opaque. (Gray results in semi-transparency...amount of transparency depends on the shade of gray.) Select the desired tip with the rectangular marquee; then go up to the menu bar and select Edit<Define Brush Preset. Name your brush. (Brush size must be no larger than 2,500 px...the define brush preset option will be grayed out if the selected area exceeds 2500 pixels in any direction.) You should also save the brush set with a name otherwise you will lose it when the set is replaced.

Gradients are made using the gradient editor.

Tons of free resources such as gradients and brushes are out there on the exchange and elsewhere. Several links...just a small sampling of what's out there.

Edit: I forgot to mention if you plan to use anything you download that is free for commercial purposes be sure to check the readme to make sure it's okay. Some items that are free are for personal use only or ask that you give credit.
