Missing dock icons in Mavericks

Just a few minutes ago, nothing would load in Finder past when it opens to my home folder. I figured I would try a log out and see if that would fix it. It did, but now my dock is showing missing icons. The app is still there, but only Finder, Calendar, and Trash icons are visible. I can still open the app and the light comes on, but no icon. I restarted and that didn't fix anything. Any ideas?
This literally just happened, and I wasn't doing anything unusual.

Some suggestions for all of you:
read Sco1by's post and then repair your hard drive. Don't just verify it, repair it: Boot into your recovery partition (hold down ⌘R at restart until you see the Apple symbol), go to Disk Utility, and repair your hard drive. While you're there, repair permissions too. OSX Tips Using the Recovery HD
This type of problem with macs is usually due to some third-party software that the user has added, usually an "enhancer", "optimizer", "cleaner", "defragmenter", "utility", anti-virus software, or "haxie". Collectively these are known as "crapware". They are notorious for causing problems like this with the GUI. They are unnecessary and harmful. They are popular with recent converts from the windows world. About 99% of the time, when people write in to these forums about symptoms like this, that's the problem.
I'd remove all these apps from your computer. If you can. They can be impossible to remove.
If the problems persist, then the only option is to start over, back up your documents, erase your HD, and do a clean install.
Then resist the temptation to install more crapware.

  • HT201730 Missing Dock Icons

Missing dock icons include Mail, Safari, iTunes, Contacts on my iMac... the applications run but the icons have been missing since last Yosemite upgrade yesterday. Rebooting doesn't restore them, any helpful hints?

Can you open the Applications folder from the Finders 'Go' menu? Applications should be stored in there if all is correct.
You should also be able to find applications in Spotlight or in LaunchPad too, if you are familiar with those. It's worth checking the main /Applications folder is correct, try the Go menu again & see if it looks correct – Calendar, Contacts, Safari & Mail & all the default Apple apps should be installed there.

  • Activity monitor dock icon in mavericks

I used to be able to show the Activity Monitor as a pie graph of memory usage in the dock icon. But in Mavericks I cannot figure out how to do that.
    Help?

Yes, thanks for the confirmation. I did some googling and found more people with eight-cores who could not view more than one bar in the dock icon.
I understand that showing eight bars in the icon might've been unreadable, but I would have preferred that they show two bars for the dual processors, instead of leaving us with one bar. I'll have to look into some alternate utilities, but it's a shame Apple decided to regress functionality on their top-end machines.

  • Failure to shut down & missing dock icons

    2013 MBP & Yosemite 10.10.1
My MBP is regularly displaying the message "Safari (example) quit because of a problem" AND "your computer shut down because of a problem". The computer often becomes unresponsive following either of these messages. If I try and restart / shut down (depending on circumstances), the computer's screen darkens and continues to show the cursor, and the keyboard remains illuminated, but nothing else happens. I have to shut it down using the power on / off key. When I start it back up again, most of the dock icons are missing, although mousing along the dock shows the application names and the apps themselves are accessible from the dock.
    Help appreciated!

  • Missing Dock Icons

I accidently removed my osx, internet launch icon from my dock...(the one shaped like a white satellite). I've searched my entire computer trying to find it to put it back on the dock but cannot find it. How do I get it back?? I can still launch the internet via safari, but this can only open one internet search at a time, whereas the osx icon could open multiple. Please HelP!
    Huevo

If you mean the spring icon at the right side, open Safari, enter http://www.apple.com/macosx/ as the address, and drag the blue globe to the left into the Dock. This can be done with any URL.

  • Missing dock icon for Max OS X

I used to have a little icon in dock. It looked like the "@" symbol on a spring, and when I clicked it, I went straight to www.apple.com. Well, it's gone and I cannot find it anywhere. HELP!

I'm not sure that you can.
Frankly, I don't put URL shortcuts in the dock as they take a lot of space. I just use bookmarks in Safari.
What you could do is to create a folder, make the folder icon whatever you want, and drag as many URL shortcuts to the folder as you want. Put the folder in the dock, right click on it and choose "display as folder" (instead of "display as stack") and then click it, and select the URL from the list that you want to launch. It will give very similar functionality, with a custom icon of your choosing.

  • MISSING DOCK ICONS | question marks in the dock

i just did a full OS reinstall of ML and after re-loading sofware and documents there are about six or seven applications in the DOCK that have QUESTION MARKS instead of APP ICONS.
does anyone know why this happened or how to fix it?
    TIA

    makes total sense. thank you.
is it possible this is an indication that there is some larger problem associated here? i had to do a fresh install due to various problems and i am sort of uber vigilant on this second go round with this machine...

  • Missing dock icon in system preferences

I tried combo update 10.5.8 and tried deleting com.apple.preferencepanes.cache, no good

I don't seem to see anything that is referring to the dock. But, I found this link with google and ran it. http://att.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=103078&d=1203111933 . it did restore my dock to system preferences but it didn't restore my apple icon dock preferences. I can live with this on my Leopard computer. Strange. Have a fix for all my problems?

Sorry, but is this really an iPad question? From what you seem to be asking, this seems to be an issue with Mac OS X and the App Store, not with an iPad, but you've posted in the iPad forum.
If this really is a Mac question, the Mac OS X 10.7 Lion forum can be found here:

  • Activity Monitor Dock Icon - Memory - Missing

Why is the Memory option for the Activity Monitor Dock Icon missing now in Mavericks?
Why would Apple remove this feature?
I was happily using this little pie chart for a Dock Icon to keep track of overall memory usage on my system.
Has anyone else found a solution to bring this back?

Yes, thanks for the confirmation. I did some googling and found more people with eight-cores who could not view more than one bar in the dock icon.
I understand that showing eight bars in the icon might've been unreadable, but I would have preferred that they show two bars for the dual processors, instead of leaving us with one bar. • OS X Mavericks update 10.9.1 has mucked up my dock icons

I've just downloaded and installed OS X Mavericks 10.9.1 update from the app store which has caused my MBP (mid 2010) to completely slow down and has also mucked up my dock icons.
Some of the icons have become invisible but can be found if you hover the mouse over where they should be. Other icons appear as "scrambled" pics but again you can find what each one is by hovering the mouse over them. Each of the invisible or scrambled icons will open the app they are associated with but very slowly - i.e. if I click on what should be the Safari icon Safari will open a new browser after about 6 minutes of trying in the background.
I have restarted my MBP several times with the same result. I have turned off my MBP and then re-booted it but to no avail. I have also re-downloaded the update but get the same result.
Anyone got any idea what is going on as I am beginning to think that upgrading to OS X Mavericks is slowly turning in to a big disaster.
    Les

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Now reinstall the the update. You can download directly here: Be sure to choose the correct updater for your model.

  • Dock Icons Missing after running Onyx

    Hello Folks,
I just ran Onyx and did a restart. I now have about 12 of my dock icons missing, can anyone tell me what I need to do to restore them?
    Many thanks,
    Jim

I tried just clicking on each icon that was gone, and as I did with each one, they came back to normal. In my case where each icon was there was a blank icon in its place, that I clicked on.

Today, I found something really weird going on on my iMac. As you can see in the screenshot, the Dock icons are missing the reflections… o_O
Any ideas how to get them back? I have tried almost everything… reboot, restore persmissions, fsck, deleting the preferences, etc. but nothing worked…
    Thanks in advance.

  • Can't see system ram/memory usage in Mavericks dock icon anymore

I used to be able to select memory usage for the dock icon, but now it seems to be gone, or not there, in Mavericks.  All I see now is CPU, Network, and Disk Activity.    Anyone know where memory usage  went?

.....update,         I found this answer on another post.    (I may have to use third party options untill Apple provides an updated memory "pressure" usage to the dock icon.
This is no longer an option, especially since Mavericks has new memory management routines (ie, memory compression) that make the charting of memory usage less straightforward. Apple has switched to a new "Memory Pressure" approach to viewing memory usage, which is available in the Memory section of Activity Monitor, but so far has not been added as a Dock icon option. Hopefully Apple will do so, as this would perhaps be one of the more useful Dock icon options.
