Missing dock!

My dock has mysteriously disappeared. It was there last night, but now it is gone! I have checked my system preferences and everything says it should be there, but it is not. Can someone out there help me???
Thanks!

  • HT201730 Missing Dock Icons

Missing dock icons include Mail, Safari, iTunes, Contacts on my iMac... the applications run but the icons have been missing since last Yosemite upgrade yesterday. Rebooting doesn't restore them, any helpful hints?

Can you open the Applications folder from the Finders 'Go' menu? Applications should be stored in there if all is correct.
You should also be able to find applications in Spotlight or in LaunchPad too, if you are familiar with those. It's worth checking the main /Applications folder is correct, try the Go menu again & see if it looks correct – Calendar, Contacts, Safari & Mail & all the default Apple apps should be installed there.

  • Missing dock applications

I am having some weird issues... Logged in to my laptop last night and saw a question mark over Safari, and I couldn't open it. Did some googling, ran "repair disk permissions" in disk utility, restarted my computer and now I have question marks instead of icons for Safari, Mail and Preview. I know that the question marks mean that the application is missing (and they are indeed missing when I go into the applications folder, and there seem to be several other apps missing, but I am not sure what, I just see lots of blank spaces where apps used to be.) I know for a fact that I did not go and delete these apps, I was using safari all day Sunday, then it was gone when I tried to use it last night.
I am just at a loss for what to do now. I have firefox installed, so am still able to get online using that. Any suggestions??

Drag the ? marked application out of your dock to the Desktop- they will go puff.
    - they will never work once they have a ? on them.
I would then do a shutdowm for 5 minutes and a cold restart.
Then "Repair permission" again and maybe a second time.
Then when you have your icon back for the applications
    - then drag them back into the dock from the application folder..

  • Missing dock icons in Mavericks

Just a few minutes ago, nothing would load in Finder past when it opens to my home folder. I figured I would try a log out and see if that would fix it. It did, but now my dock is showing missing icons. The app is still there, but only Finder, Calendar, and Trash icons are visible. I can still open the app and the light comes on, but no icon. I restarted and that didn't fix anything. Any ideas?
This literally just happened, and I wasn't doing anything unusual.

Some suggestions for all of you:
read Sco1by's post and then repair your hard drive. Don't just verify it, repair it: Boot into your recovery partition (hold down ⌘R at restart until you see the Apple symbol), go to Disk Utility, and repair your hard drive. While you're there, repair permissions too. OSX Tips Using the Recovery HD
This type of problem with macs is usually due to some third-party software that the user has added, usually an "enhancer", "optimizer", "cleaner", "defragmenter", "utility", anti-virus software, or "haxie". Collectively these are known as "crapware". They are notorious for causing problems like this with the GUI. They are unnecessary and harmful. They are popular with recent converts from the windows world. About 99% of the time, when people write in to these forums about symptoms like this, that's the problem.
I'd remove all these apps from your computer. If you can. They can be impossible to remove.
If the problems persist, then the only option is to start over, back up your documents, erase your HD, and do a clean install.
Then resist the temptation to install more crapware.

  • Missing Dock after Sleep Mode

    Hi everyone,
Lately, I have been watching a lot of DVDs before i sleep and I would usually fall asleep before the end of the movie. This would result in me waking up in the morning with the computer in sleep mode.
Reinitiating the computer results in the dock being completely missing. At first I thought it was just a 'one-time' thing, but I decided to let it happen a few more nights in a row just to see if this would be a reoccuring problem.
Unfortunately, it has and i have noticed that everytime i keep the computer awake for it to fall asleep by itself, waking up the computer in the morning results in the dock being missing.
I have tried system preferences and everything you can imagine, but the only solution to this problem is to reboot the computer.
Can someone please explain to me why this problem occurs and what needs to be done to rectify this?
Also, out of curiosity, is it bad for the computer to be always on sleep mode? Would it be better if i just turned it off completely before going to bed?
    Many thanks

    Hello tek:
I would trash the dock preference file (com.apple.dock.plist) and restart.
In answer to your question, I am of the school that believes turning electronics on and off repeatedly shorten the time to failure. I always sleep my iMacs and only turn them off when i am away for a few days.

  • Missing Dock item after restart

    Hi
Yesterday I got an update prompt from Picasa.
I put it in the dock, but after I updated OS X and restarted, it was gone.
I have got nowhere trying to find this update on Picasa pages, but could anyone tell me please
if it remains somewhere on my iMac, so I can update it.
It seems a bit inefficient if a Dock item can simply be jettisoned on restart
    Thanks

    Paul
    Thanks
No, I did not click on it. I was going to do that after updating OS X.
I did not drag the updater anywhere.
Picasa's info says that with Mac, they provide the update and you either accept or decline.
I don't know if 'gone missing' will be considered as decline or if they will send it again.
    Thanks

  • Missing Dock Files

A little while ago, I downloaded a skin for my dock from http://leoparddocks.com/. I then installed Pages and put an icon of it on my dock. For some reason, Pages started to act up so I decided to delete it for the time being and to reinstall it later. I dragged the Pages icon off my dock, but some reason the space from the icon was still there. If you highlighted each icon, the space was labeled as Pages but the icon was no longer there and you couldn't click on it.
I thought that maybe if I restored my former dock would fix the problem, so I went back http://leoparddocks.com and downloaded the backup files. I then went through to the dock folder and accidently deleted the wrong folder. Now, my dock is completely gone. By going back to where the dock folder is shows a wrong icon. I tried to restore it but I can no longer get to my trash. I tried looking up some information and somebody suggested creating a new account to see if the dock would show up, so I created "test", which I am on now. The dock still doesn't load, and now the time, batter life, and the rest of the icons in the top right corner are missing. I cannot get back to my regular account, I cannot click on "About This Mac" or anything. I have no idea what I've done.
I have the backup discs that I received when I purchased my Mac, but they're from Tiger and I upgraded to Leopard, but those discs are back at school (and I don't go back for 2 more weeks). I'm not exactly sure what I've done but I'm looking for any sort of help!

Do you mean the Dock Prefs in Macintosh HD/Users/yourname/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist & >com.apple.dock.db.plist?
Do you have a backup you can use to restore?

  • The MIssing Dock

    Hi All,
My Dock has gone missing, it is not hidden in sydtem preferences.
    I canot delete dock.plist either.
My software is up to date.
    Not sure what to do?
    Thanks
    Pankaj

Hi Pankaj, this is a new one on me....
You may be able to repair this with the 10.4.3 Stand Alone Combo Update.
This is a full install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Before applying the update, repair permissions and repair disk:
Repair Permissions: This should be done BEFORE and AFTER software installs and updates.
    1. Navigate to Utilities/DiskUtility and launch Disk Utility.
    2. Choose your volume (usually the second icon)
    3. Choose "First Aid" tab
    4. Click on "Repair Permissions"
    Repair Disk:
    Steps for using Disk Utility
    1. Insert your Mac OS X CD-ROM disc or Restore DVD disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key until you see the spinning gear..
    2. Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume, if necessary.
    6. Click Repair.
If you repair errors run it until no errors found.
    Good luck, let us know.

  • Flashing white screen. Missing dock. Slow computer.

Restarted the computer. When it rebooted the computer's dock was missing at the bottom and the screen flashes white every so often. The computer was running very slowly and inoperable.

    Hi DamiansQ-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards.
Did you repair permissions on the hard drive?
Is it possible for to you boot from the installation disk and use the Disk Utility to do so now?
    Luck-

  • Failure to shut down & missing dock icons

    2013 MBP & Yosemite 10.10.1
My MBP is regularly displaying the message "Safari (example) quit because of a problem" AND "your computer shut down because of a problem". The computer often becomes unresponsive following either of these messages. If I try and restart / shut down (depending on circumstances), the computer's screen darkens and continues to show the cursor, and the keyboard remains illuminated, but nothing else happens. I have to shut it down using the power on / off key. When I start it back up again, most of the dock icons are missing, although mousing along the dock shows the application names and the apps themselves are accessible from the dock.
    Help appreciated!

  • Main account missing dock, but new account works

    Here's the situation...
I restarted my computer today (with no updates being installed or any real changes) because I noticed that it was a little slow.
However, when it finally rebooted, everything was impossibly slow (30-60 seconds for any action to register) and my dock was missing. On top of that, my wallpaper would occasionally flash to black and then back to the image. I've read through a ton of posts about this and apparently I'm not the only one.
I've tried killing the Dock process, deleting my preference files, and even completely reinstalling the OS. No change. My dock isn't hidden or anything like that...it's definitely something much worse. I'm on Yosemite and have been since it came out with no issues.
However, I decided to try to see what would happen with a new account. I created a new admin account and it works perfectly fine. The dock is there, it runs fast, no wallpaper issues. What possibly could be the problem with my original account. I'd be fine to start with this new account if there was a simple way to port everything over from the old account, but that doesn't appear to be the case.
Ideas on what might be causing this problem?
    Thanks,
    JMR

Yes...this still happens in safe mode. I ran Entrecheck. Here's what came out: Thanks for your help.
    Problem description:
My main account no longer shows the dock and the wallpaper regularly flashes to black. Everything is very slow to respond (45-60 seconds per action). This happens in safe mode and normal. I’ve done everything I can think of including reinstalling Yosemite.
If I create a new admin account, the new account seems to function fine in both safe and normal mode, but clearly there’s a larger problem.

  • Blue Screen, Missing Dock and Mac HD problems

There seem to be at least three problems with my iMAC:
    1) the screen is blue even though under System Preferences, it is set for an image,
    2) the Dock is missing even though under Dock Settings, it should not be hidden and should be at the bottom (oddly when I select "right" location for the dock, the radio button does not light up, but is changed if I close and reopen the preferences screen), and
    3) clicking on the Macintosh HD does not open it or the other files (e.g., PDF, *.doc) on the Desktop.
The only recent change I made to the system was to add Clamxav for virus scans, but that was scheduled to run on Monday. I have been traveling and my spouse is not sure when the issues started.
I have tried the PRAM re-set explained elsewhere, but that did not help. Any other possible solutions?

Welcome to Discussions - my first response would be to reset the PRAM, even though yu have already done it Try doing it again and if that doesn't help, check your disk using Disk Utility:
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Please post back with results, it could be a combination of problems, or it coul be corrupted preferences, try running Preferential Treatment to see if that's the case.

  • Missing Dock Icons

I accidently removed my osx, internet launch icon from my dock...(the one shaped like a white satellite). I've searched my entire computer trying to find it to put it back on the dock but cannot find it. How do I get it back?? I can still launch the internet via safari, but this can only open one internet search at a time, whereas the osx icon could open multiple. Please HelP!
    Huevo

If you mean the spring icon at the right side, open Safari, enter http://www.apple.com/macosx/ as the address, and drag the blue globe to the left into the Dock. This can be done with any URL.

  • Missing dock after installing maverick

Have just installed Maverick and the screen display resolution has shrunk  smaller than the previous setting.
There is no dock on the screen to enable me to go into system preferences to alter the resolution.
    Help !!!

    This solved my problem
    1. Open 'Terminal';
    2. Copy this text (without comas): '' mv ~/L*/Application\ Support/Dock/*.db ~/Desktop ";
    3. Press Enter; (Screen will flash and icons, dock & finder will disappear for some seconds! In the end, everything will appear on screen!
    4. Restar computer;
    5. Immediately after turning it on, press AT THE SAME TIME: Command + ALT + P+ R
    6. The screen will flash & you'll hear the booting sound again! Then you can let go teh keyboard.

  • Missing Dock/Missing Finder-spotlight, Maverick 10.9

I recently upgraded to Mavericks OS X 10.9 and the other day when I logged on I had no dock and no finder/spotlight bar. The only thing that opens up is system preferences. I cant do anything but system preferences. I can't find anyone else with this same problem. Can someone please help. I just upgraded and now I cant even use my mac.

Unfortunately, Finder is a part of OS level files. So, we have a couple of options.
First off, let's see if there's a software conflict somewhere. Boot into safe mode (boot the comptuer with the shift key held down) and try there. If it works in safe mode, odds are we either have a 3rd party KEXT or application blocking its launch. Check your login items (Apple -> System Preferences -> users & groups -> select your user -> login items), and disable them.
Also check your startup items (you'll have to do this in safe mode as it requires Finder).
    /library/startupitems
    If Safe Mode/removing startup/login items doesn't work:
First, boot in to the recovery partition (boot the computer with command + r held down). Launch disk utility, and repair both disk permissions and the disk. Reboot and try again.
If that fails, boot into recovery again, and reinstall.
