Missing emails in Mail - Lion deleting them?

I'm using Mail with two IMAP accounts (oneis gmail), and I'm experiencing a little weirdness.
I seem to be missing emails coming in, which I'm not deleting or filing away.
I got in late last night and checked my emails on my iPhone. I read one that needed to be replied to today, then closed Mail on my iPhone and went to bed.
This morning, I jumped on my Lion iMac and opened Mail - and the email I read on my iPhone doesn't appear in my inbox. I checked on my iPhone and iPad and it's not there either.
I didn't delete it or move it or do anything other than read it on my iPhone.
I asked on another forum, and one person said the following:
I am experiencing the same thing. I seem to be able to send email from the Lion's new Mail, but can't receive any.
I have several mail accounts in Mail and the problem seem to be the same with all of them regardless of whether on exchange server or not. The strange thing is that I can see and read some of the "invisible" incoming mail in my iPhone, but if I try to refresh my Mail accounts on mac, it may delete the new emails also from my iPhone! The disappearing emails are nowhere to be found and I have also checked the external exchange service mail boxes and junk mail and spam boxes.
Quite serious bug causing a lot of harm!
So it doesn't seem to be just me.
Anyone else?
Cheers.

Ditto,
I have an Exchange, 5 IMAP, and a POP account.  I only have the exchange and an IMAP set up on my phone and iPad, so I only know that those are acting odd for sure.  Not really sure what the problem is.  The emails are showing up in searches.  I have a special "ding" for when my wife emails me and that sounds, but I can only see it if I search for it. The message, along with, most, others wont show up in my inbox...
I'm a part of the developers beta for iCloud and have iOS 5 beta on my iPad but not my iPhone.  Not sure if that has anything to do with it, but I figured I should mention.
I really have no idea where to start to fix this bug.  Maybe adding and removing the account, but if it's a problem spanning multiple accounts, that doesn't seem likely and with the number of email I have, it'd require quite a while to sync up again.

  • Keeping emails in mail but deleting them from .mac account?

My mobile phone wants to download the entire .mac mailbox whenever I check my mail - is the answer then to empty the .mac mailbox everyday? I once did this and lost all the emails in Mail on my computer. I'd like to keep them on the computer, but is this possible?

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
Exactly how you use your Powerbook and phone is the key to arriving at the best way to do this. If you do not have your Mac connected at all times, or at least when needing to use the phone to check email, then you can set up your .mac account as a POP account, rather than .mac, and then remove messages from the server whenever you first download them onto your computer.
A .mac account, like an IMAP account (it really is just an IMAP account) has its Inbox, and usually its Sent mailbox residing on the server, whereas a POP account has the Inbox, Sent, etc residing on your hard drive. While you can leave messages on the server, when using POP access, so as to download to other computers, the original concept of POP was to download and remove.
The Mail Application has all the needed selections for instructing the server to keep or remove messages after download, when the account is set up as POP.
The other choice is to create a New Mailbox, which will be on your Mac, and then move messages from the .mac Inbox to this new mailbox, and thus remove them from the Inbox, which should take them off the server.
    More info, please.

OK, let's come back to the original issue; how are deleted messages retrievable?
First, is the account set up as an Exchange account or a POP account? I'll assume it's Exchange. If it were POP the answer is obvious.
If it's an Exchange account are you deleting the messages from the phone or from some other computer? If you are deleting them from another computer they will not be removed from the Trash folder on the phone until the phone next syncs AND the Trash folder is opened. But this will take time. You can force the Trash folder to sync in near real time by going into Settings/Mail,Contacts,Calendars, tap on the Exchange account, tap on Mail Folders to Push and check "Deleted Items". Note that doing this will result in increased data usage and reduced battery life.
If I haven't described the situation tell me what assumptions I made that are incorrect.

  • Why does my emails keep downloading after deleting them?

Why does my emails keep downloading after deleting them?

It sounds like you may be "synced" to an IMAP email server with your ISP.  You would need to go into Mail>Preferences and set the messages to be removed from the IMAP server after some period of time so they don't redownload to your computer.  That's one possiblility.  Another is if you are synced with iCloud, then the mail is stored on your iCloud server backup and will redownload until you remove it.
    Hope this helps

  • I cannot open any of my Hotmail e-mail messages, delete them, look at other ones, nothing. All I can do is sign in and that is it.

I cannot open any of my Hotmail e-mail messages, delete them, look at other old ones, nothing. All I can do is sign in and that is it. I have tried deleting cookies, clearing the cache space, rebooting the computer, rebooting my internet connection, refreshing the page several times. Here is the thing. I can get on the page and read my mail, etc. like normal if i use Internet Explorer, but I prefer Firefox. The problem is Firefox and I rely on my e-mail for job purposes. I hope someone can help me!!!

Nevermind. I finally found a third party answer and will post it for anyone else with my problem.

You really should be doing backups with an actual backup application, especially one that will work automatically, and, if your external HD is large enough, back up your entire system.  These can automatically back up only what's changed since the  previous backup, and some will keep "archive" copies of things you've changed or deleted, also.
Too many things can go wrong, such as your internal HD failing, and you'll have a major project to reinstall everything.
You already have Time Machine, built-in to OSX.  You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
#27 in the second link mentions some alternatives, too.

  • How do I delete email from iPhone without deleting them from my Mac

How do I delete email from iPhone without deleting them from my Mac?

To remove a photo from iPhoto and your Mac:
Put it in the iPhoto Trash, then enpty it. Then empty the system trash as well
If you want to remove a photo from iPhoto but keep it on your Mac:
First Export the file from iPhoto (File -> Export) to whereever you want it and then go through the steps above.
Confusion arises as the notion that you would want to remove a pic from iPhoto but keep it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It's like saying I want to remove one address from Address Book, but still keep it on my Mac. The point of iPhoto and such apps is that they are used to manage your photos. Anything that you need to do with the pics cn be done either with or via iPhoto.

  • Why is it still showing "new" email when I have deleted them?

Why does it show that I have new emails after I have deleted them? Hate it!!

You still get "Not enough" space after deleting everything? how much music do you have on the phone. And how much free space does it say you have now?

  • Why do I keep getting the same emails after I have deleted them.

Since I have updated to the new OS I have been receiving emails that i have deleted from my inbox to only be placed back in it. I thought Apple made the new update to where you view emails from all your devices and if you delete from one device it will do the same to the others or am I miss understanding?  The OS will place the email back into my inbox like it was a new email coming through.

You can remove (uninstall) Java Console extension, you do not need them and they can cause problems. The same for the Java Quick Starter.

  • Missing attachment in mail Lion

    Hi,
After upgrading snow leopard to Lion, when using mail in mac os, I have problems with attachments.
Mail displays all attachement with an icon but when you select a message with an attachment icon, the attachment is missing. Moreover, when you are sending an email with attachment, in your sent mailbox, the attachment is not displayed.
I have tried to rebuild my mailbox account, or to remove and purge it an reinstall it (with imap), without any success. I know this is due to Lion, because I have tried to open my mailbox through a webmail client and all attachments are displayed.
The latest update of Lion (10.7.1) does not fix this problem.
Does someone have fix this very annoying bug ?
    Thank you

I am not having this issue with mail and Lion.  And some
of the mailboxes I have have been carried as far back
a Tiger (2006 as a matter of fact).
You may have a permissions issue or a User account
    issue.
First, easiest thing would be to go to Disk Utility
and repair permissions on your hard drive.
If that doesn't resolve the issue, create another user
on your Mac and log into that account.  Then set up your
email in that account and see what happens.  Sometimes
user accounts can get corrupted causing some strange
behaviors in mail, address book, etc.

  • Mail only storing emails in Mail and deleting from Gmail and Iphone

Ok so i have a gmail account. I set up Mail on my macbook. I also have that Gmail account on my IPhone. When I open Mail it retrieves my mail and thats great. but when i open my email on my IPhone, the messages are not there. So if i check my email on my computer, it deletes it from the server i guess? Because even when i go to GMAIL.COM there are no emails since i checked my email on my Mail account. Please help because my work schedule gets emailed and i need to be able to see all my emails on my IPhone, MacBook, and Public Computers. Thanks

I'm guessing that you are using GMail as a POP server. You need to switch to IMAP. On the GMail end, go to Settings, then Forwarding and POP/IMAP and enable IMAP. Next, you will (unfortunately) have to re-create the account in Mail, since you previously set it up as POP. If you have messages stored in the In box, Trash or Sent mailboxes associated with that account in Mail and don't want to lose them, create new "On My Mac" mailboxes (Mailbox -> New Mailbox, set location to "On My Mac") and move the messages there. Then delete the account and create a new IMAP account. Follow the directions at the link below to set up the account:

  • How to keep email on AOL server when mirror email on Mail is deleted?

I linked my AOL account to Mail.app (on my MacBook) via IMAP protocol using the AOL Service Assistant. I understand that under this protocol, the emails on my IMAP is a mirror image of what is on the AOL server and vice versa. Hence if I delete any messages in Mail, it is also deleted on the AOL server. Is there any way that I can delete the message in Mail but have it remain on the AOL server?
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi DawnMaple!
I don't use Apple Mail, so I can't directly answer your question, but even if there is a procedure to do what you want, after a certain amount of time, I think it may be about seven days, AOL will still remove the Emails from the server,
If you want to retain all of your AOL mail, you can do it with the AOL software, if it is installed.
    Open AOL Preferences > Mail.
Select Save the mail I read & Save the mail I send.
Then still in AOL Preferences, use the scroll bar to navigate to Filing Cabinet, and click on that.
Checkmark Automatically delete items in my filing cabinet, and in the contextual menus, below Delete after, select Never.
    Click on OK.

  • Missing emails in Mail

After I remove Yahoo account from Mail in OS X 10.7.2, all the yahoo emails no longer display inside Mail. How to find them back/ They do not exist in the Yahoo Server anymore as Mail 'sucked' them out when I added Yahoo to Mail initially.

  • Infrequent missing emails in Mail App

I am having one to two emails a day not show up in my Mail App on my iMac running Mavericks. This is a gmail address and these emails in question are there if I go to my google account and login. I even see them on my Android phone with a Gmail account. I am getting on average 10-15 emails sent to this Gmail address daily that come through perfectly, just not getting them all. I ideas what could be wrong?

I was having the same issue with my gmail account.  I was scouring around last night trying to find an answer and I saw a suggestion to disable the account in mail, quit mail, restart it and enable the account again.  Since then all my emails are coming in regularly again.  Not sure if it will work for you but it's worth a try.  I hope this helps.  I'm runing mail version 7.1 and I have updated maverics to 10.9.1.
To enable/disable the accounts you need to do the following in mail.
Go to Preferences -> Accounts Tab -> uncheck the box that says "Enable this account"
