Missing ethernet option in TCP/IP settings

I just got a broadband connection... When I plugged it in and went to configure it in CtrlPanel > TCP/IP I saw that the only options for "Connect via" were PPP and AppleTalk. How can I get the drop down list to display Ethernet...
Thanks in advance.

Hi, cjzappleid -
If your G4 model is a G4 (AGP) or G4 (PCI) model, you will need to use a Crossover type cable to connect the Cable modem directly to the Mac.
Later models of G4's have an auto-sensing ethernet port, one which can reconfigure itself to use either a Crossover or a Patch type cable; since the G4 (AGP) and earlier do not have such a port, care must be taken to use the correct kind of cable.
On those models where it does make a difference -
• When direct-connecting an ethernet device (such as a modem) to the Mac, a Crossover type cable must be used.
• When connecting an ethernet device to a Mac through an intermediate device such as a hub, switch, or router, then a Patch type (also called Straight-through) cable must be used.
Article #42717 - Apple products that require an Ethernet Crossover cable
It is difficult to tell one type from another, unless the cable itself is marked. One way to tell one cable from another is to examine the color coding of the wires in the end connectors -

  • Configure DNS & Search Domains in TCP/IP Settings via Terminal?

    HI Folks,
I've been having a long standing battle trying to find out what is wrong with my machine, it's been running like a dog for a while and having recently added 2 new Macs to our network i recall that there was a setting missing - namely within the TCP/IP settings for the Built In Ethernet, the DNS Servers and Search Domains are not configured on my machine, but are on the new ones i've added (mine was my new foray into Macs so i maybe set it up wrong!)
However the main problem occurs when i try to edit the settings for the above from within System Preferences -> Network, i get a spinning beach ball of doom and have to Force Quit. Yet oddly i can access the setting fine when i am at home and not connected to the AD of the Windows Server Environment... which makes me think the events could be linked.... i thought it may have been Parallels and it's NAT settings, but given that all works perfectly at home i'm not so sure. Hence, as a process of elimination i'd like to try and get the correct settings for Search Domain etc to see if it helps, before i flatten the machine and reinstall Tiger completely!
The main issues i've been having with the machine can be found here:

    Hi Phil (and others!)
I opted for the easy choice, which did work... and have added the Search Domain info etc whilst at home... and touch wood today things seem to be working better, i can easily access network preferences etc and have had no hanging apps as yet...
I did try and use different locations for work and home, but sadly i ended up with a spinning beach ball of doom when i tried to change the location at work, so it was a slightly pointless exercise!!!

  • Missing TCP/IP settings for iPhone tethering (Bluetooth and USB)

Is it just me or Apple has completely disabled the TCP/IP settings for BT and USB connections for iPhone tethering (and possibly any other mobile devices)?
I can now only set the IP addresses and DNS server. No Proxies or WINS settings tabs.
I have also noticed that if you setup a USB tethering connection in Leopard and upgrade to Snow Leopard, the settings are still available, but NOT if you make a clean install of Snow Leopard and create a new iPhone USB tethering connection.
I always use a SOCKS5 when I'm using my tethering connection for security and better/faster connection with my manual proxy server setup. I find the new "options" in SL very limited, not only for my usage.

I got this to work again (in fact, I'm tethered right now
Here are the steps I followed:
    1) Upgraded to iTunes 9
    2) Upgraded iPhone to OS 3.1
    3) Removed device from Bluetooth Devices list on my MBP
    4) Removed Bluetooth PAN from Network preferences
    5) Restarted iPhone and MBP
    6) Set-up iPhone as a Bluetooth Device on MBP
    7) Enabled tethering on iPhone
    8) Connected to iPhone network via the Bluetooth icon on my MBP menu bar
    9) Verified that the blue "Internet Tethering" bar was on the iPhone
    10) Manually added Bluetooth PAN to my MBP network preferences (connect show as yellow, "IP cannot be assigned" message)
    11) Opened the Advanced pane and clicked the "Renew DHCP Lease" button
    12) IP was assigned!
I'm not sure if the first two steps contributed to the solution or not, but these are the steps that worked for me.
    Good luck to you all...

  • Option to select RoboHelp settings.ISF file missing in FM12

    Hi
I am not sure if this query comes under FrameMaker forum or RoboHelp, but since I did not see RH Integration category in FrameMaker forums, I am posting it here. Moderators, please move it to the right forum or let me know if I have to delete it from here and post it elsewhere.
If I wanted to publish a WebHelp output from FrameMaker 11, I had an option of selecting my settings.ISF file, which had all my FM-RH styles mapped, and publishing it. But now, in FM 12, I don't see it. I have to select the CSS file and re-do the mapping all over again.
Am I missing something here? How can I feed the ISF or mapped doc to FM so that I don't have to do the mapping everytime I publish the Webhelp output from FM12?
    Thank in advance.
    Sreekanth

Well put, Arnis. I could not agree more.
In our team, I take care of creating these RH Settings file, master page, skin, etc. that is needed to publish a WebHelp output from a FM book (typical single-sourcing approach). Our team comprises of people who are new to one or both of these tools. Even though I tell them that there is minimal or no post-RH import task involved in this process, the very thought of working with multiple tools acts as a demotivator.
When I saw the WebHelp output option from FM12, I was excited that I can increase the adoption rate now. I looked at the options and even found the browse sequence here which was missing earlier. But then, when I noticed that there is no way I get my copyright info on the footer, the balloon just burst.
I am sure I am not the only TCS user who has copyright or similar criticial information like company name, author name, year of publication, etc., in the footer. So, I simply cannot understand how the powers-that-be decided that users will be ready to publish WebHelp (or for that matter any other) output without that information. If not through master page, they should have provided some other option to add this info.
Anyway, I guess we can only hope that some sense prevails in the next release atleast.

  • Ethernet option missing in Appletalk control panel

We recently picked up some Power Mac 5200/LC's to add to our existing Macs. Some of them have OS 7.5 and some have 7.6.1 but they all have ethernet cards. The ones with 7.6.1 have an option in the Appletalk control panel to select ethernet and work fine. The ones with 7.5 have no option for ethernet in the control panel. Do I need to upgrade the OS or is there some sort of driver that needs to be installed? Any ideas?

there some sort of driver that needs to be installed?
    Any ideas?
There are 2 reasons for this:
    1. an Ethernet option doesn't show up because there is no ethernet card installed in the Macintosh
    2. The card is installed but the Apple Ethernet drivers are not installed into the Extensions folder of the active Start up disk's System Folder.
    Solution:
1.Verify that the Mac does infact have an ethernet card.
    2. Verify that the Apple Ethernet drivers are installed.
these items should be inside the Extensions folder:
    AppleTalk version 58.1.5
Apple Built-In Ethernet driver file version 1.0.1
Apple Ethernet NB driver file version 1.0.1
Apple Ethernet LC driver file version 1.0.1
Apple Ethernet CS driver file version 1.0.1
note; the LC driver for and LC Mac
NB is for Nubus Macs and CS is for the CS line of Macs.
Mac OS System 7.5 does not install all the drivers neccessary for every Mac to use an Ethernet card, Download and install "Network Software Access" here Downloads
or upr grade to Mac OS 7.5.3.
Open Startup Disk>Apple Extras>Network Software Selector. Be sure Open Transport is on and if you are using a router upgrade to OT 1.2.2 or later as 1.0 is not fully supported with all routers.
If the Ethernet card is not physically installed in the Mac when the Mac OS System Software is installed, then the installer will not bother installing the Ethernet drivers on an "Easy Install". With a Custom Install you can select these drivers or alternatively add the card then re-install Mac OS 7.5. and upgrade all the way to 7.5.5*

  • No Ethernet Option when Trying to Set up Internet Access

I recently turned my 6400 back on after a few years of down time. I'm trying to set things up so I can use the computer to store files as well as run some old apps. To do this, I need to get it recognized on my home network but I can't even get to the ethernet option. The cable is in and it works (I tested it on my other Mac) but when I go to internet setup assistant or AppleTalk or TCP/IP control panel, the ethernet option does not show up in any of the pull down menus. It's been a while since I worked with an older OS, but I am at a loss what to try. I even did a clean install on OS 8.5 to see if that would help. It didn't. Last time the computer was on (a few years go), it was hooked up to the internet and worked fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You didn't indicate whether the ethernet card in your 6400 is an Apple COMM slot card or a third-party COMM slot or PCI slot card. If the latter, you'll need to install a driver. If the former, the driver should have been installed, if the card were present at the time you installed OS 8.5 (assuming that you used a universal installer disk and not another Mac's Restore CD). Once you get this problem straightened out, I'd recommend downloading/running the Mac OS 8.5.1 Update or the OS 8.6 Update.
Prior to retiring your 6400 for several years, did you disconnect and remove the internal 4.5-volt alkaline battery from the motherboard? When they become fully-discharged, those alkaline batteries are prone to leakage and the resulting corrosion can ruin the motherboard. It's a Rayovac 870 or 871 and attaches to the motherboard with velcro. If an old battery is still installed (and hasn't leaked), I'd replace it with a new one.

  • No internet access using manual TCP/IP settings after 10.4.6

I stopped being able to access the internet with manual TCP/IP settings in the Network Preferences after updating from 10.4.5 -> 10.4.6.
When I change settings to use DHCP everything works fine, but I need to get the manual settings working as I use them quite often when configuring/setting-up routers.
This happens with both the AirPort and Ethernet interfaces, so it doesn't matter which interface I use to connect through.
My network Locations with manual TCP/IP settings have worked fine with 10.4.5, under the same networking hardware (routers, cables, etc...).
This occurs both at home (with my Linksys wireless router) and at work (with a DrayTek router).
At home, this problem occurs with both my PB12 and my wife's iBook12, after the 10.4.6 update was applied.
At work, all Windows laptops can connect to the internet using manual TCP/IP settings, but not my PB12.
    Example of my settings:
    - IP: 192.168.1.99
    - Mask: 255.255.255.0
    - Router: 192.168.0.1
    - DNS: <empty>
    - Domains: <empty>
    Already tried, without success:
    - verified disk -> no errors found on disk!
    - repaired permissions, using Disk Utility, rebooted and tested -> no connection!
    - tried with DNS=192.168.0.1 -> no connection!!
    - tried with DNS=[my ISP primary dns] -> still nothing!!!
    - even tried reapplying the combo update 10.4.5 -> of course, it didn't let me, as I'm now in 10.4.6!
Any thoughts or ideas to fix it and make it work in 10.4.6?
... other than archive&install, in order to downgrade!
    PB12'' @ 1,33 GHz w/ 768MB RAM   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Yes, buy I also state in my original post that I:
    - tried with DNS=[my ISP primary dns] -> still nothing!!!
but yes, I probably should have titled it "No network access using..." (posting as 4:30 AM was probably not the best idea :D)
I understand I might have been a bit clumpsy posting my problem and appreciate everyone's corrections to what I wrote, but trust me that I have done a lot of tests and spent many hours on this... Bear in mind that I am using a network Location with manual definitions that was working before the update!
Anyway, as it happens, the likely culprit now seems to be more of a 3rd party software's inability to deal with 10.4.6 rather than the 10.4.6 itself!
I've disabled/unistalled/turnned off/deleted (depending on the app) anything NOT Apple that had anything to do with networking, be it for monitoring, controlling or managing (just to name a few: Little Snitch, Menu Meters, BrickHouse, etc, etc, etc...).
The Location with the manual settings is now working fine (at least at the office).
Over the next week or so I'll incrementaly re-install those 3rd party tools (which were most likely not up-to-date anyway) and see if something breaks at some point... but won't put much effort into it -- just happy to see it working again!
I'm closing this for now, as I don't have any more time for it (work is pilling up!)... If I manage to find out which version/app combination was causing the problem I'll post it back here!

  • Early 08 MBPro-TCP/IP settings are not saved

On my home wireless network I have MAC address filtering enabled and broadcast SSID disabled. All MAC addresses are entered in the router's filter. An early 08 MBPro does not retain network settings for Verizon router on the network. When I look at the TCP/IP settings in network prefs I see they are nothing like other computers on my home network. If I click "assist me" then "diagnostics" in Airport setup I get walked through a process which allows me to choose the network I want to join. There is a list of available networks which does not include mine (since SSID is disabled) and a button which allows me to choose closed network, which I take. After entering my network's ID and WEP password I finally get connected and get a message that my connection is OK. Problem is, when I put the computer to sleep or restart I can't reconnect and the old settings which don't work reappear. It appears that the TCP/IP settings are not being saved. Could this be some corrupted preference of does it sound like a hardware problem? Thanks for any insights.
Message was edited by: Thomas Camilleri

Odd. You may be able to repair this with the 10.5.7 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
Oh, and please be sure to re-boot your modem and router.

There are multiple ways of doing this. Here are some of them..
The Web Publishing tool allows you to publish the front panel and you can control the front panel remotely.http://www.ni.com/white-paper/2911/en/
The TCP/IP socket can allow you to pass codes "strings" to another computer. Lookup the server client example.

So, when in doubt, check out the manual (this one is for 4.2 and 4.3: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPhone_iOS4_User_Guide.pdf).
This is what I found under the General / Settings section. Not super helpful!
    Profiles
This setting appears if you install one or more profiles
So I guess my question is, did you already set up the profile somewhere??  I searched through the manual and didn't see anything super helpful, but since you know specifically what you're looking for, maybe you'll find something I missed.

  • Missing Job Options

Sorry if this has been asked before, but a search does not seem to turn up much.
I'm missing job options on Adobe Distiller 9 Pro. Here are my stats:
    G5 1.8ghz, 4gb RAM OSX 10.4.11.
    Acrobat 9.1.3 Pro
We just purchased this upgrade yesterday, downloaded and installed. Previously we had Acrobat 6.0 Pro. My problem is that anytime I start Adobe Distiller I get only two joboptions: PDFX1a 2001.joboptions and PDFX3 2002.joboptions.
All other joboptions do not show. I can see the rest of the job options in the following location: Macintosh HD>Library>Application Support>Adobe>Adobe PDF>Settings
I have tried fixing/changing permissions. I have tried deleting this folder. When I delete, Adobe Distiller recreates all job options, but I still cannot see more than the 2 previously mentioned job options. I can delete the following folder which Adobe Distiller recreates: Macintosh HD>Users>~username>Library>Application Support>Adobe>Adobe PDF>Settings. This folder is empty when created. I can copy job options to that folder; Adobe Distiller still only sees 2 job options.
When saving a new job option in to either location I get an error. If I save to the desktop and copy into either location Adobe Distiller will then recognize the new job option. Someone else on another forum had  a similar issue which is how I was able to find out that I could save and move.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to force Adobe Distiller to recognize these missing joboptions? I would really rather not have to recreate them if I don't have to.
Additional info that I think may be pertinent to this:
I suspect that this is a permissions issue related to the following: My user account is a network account. We have a Windows 2003 SBS server running Active Directory. Our usernames (and therefore shortnames) are standard. First Name period Last Name. Ie., Erik.Youngren   I have Acrobat 9 Pro installed on my PB G4, but my user account here is a local account with no period in the shortname. No issues on the PB.
But if this is the case, why would Distiller then see the newly created joboptions when copied into the Settings folders?
    I'm out of ideas!

Well. For anyone else who may run across this issue. Further googling came up with someone else's issue on Windows, whereby installing Acro 9 while earlier versions of Acrobat were still on the HD led to incompleteness and instability.
Actually. That's a windows only thing. You can run all the versions you want on a Mac.
The fix must have had something to do with the reinstall.
Actually, there is one exception Graf.
if you have multiple versions of Acrobat installed, you may run into a problem where two or more copies of the AdobePDF Driver file installed. The problem stems from the fact because of the way Adobe names the AdobePDF with such names as AdobePDF 7.123 and adobePDF 8.056 and so on it has a a unique name and therefore is added to Print driver list. But when its shown in the Printer list you have something like :
    AdobePDF 9.0
    AdobePDF 8.0
    HEWLET-PACKARD DESKJET 990CSE
    LABELWRITER 400
the problem arises in regardless of which one you choose you end up making double copies of the PDF. I've had this happen to myself.
the cure is to remove any and all versions of AdobePDF from Printer Utility, then Open the newest version of acrobat and have it repair installation. (Install the Adobe PDF Driver).
All older versions can use the newer version because it has all the new features plus all the old features. However, while an older version may work any features that came out after will not work.
