Missing file extension

Hi everyone,
We noticed there was no file extension in clip names captured by Final Cut Pro. We switched on the "show file extension" in finder's preference, but it doesn't change anything.
Is there anything I've missed

although that will ceratinly work if that is what you want/need to do.
the issue here is that the 'correct' suffix/extension is not needed.
historically, Mac OS has not used file type extensions, they have used resource fork data (file type and creator code - metadata held within the header block of the file itself)
as Apple has progressed to Mac OS X they have distanced themselves from this kind of metadata in many applications ... but not universally. FCP being a prime example.
if you come from a PC world you may well assume that your files absolutely need this kind of naming extension, but in a Mac world this is not at all the case. your clips do not need to be named .mov files or what have you. they will still be .mov files even without the extension.
hope that helps

  • Mac/pc relinking sucks...missing file extension on mac

    hello
    I have indd files with linked images, but this images is from mac, and many mac users dont write file extension to files (). I need to open this files on pc and cant relink this files with "relink to folder" function.
    example: "link1" from mac need to relink on pc to "link1.tif". And here is the end.
    how to beat this problem?????????????
    And please mac users, write extension to files!!!! You are only 5% users in the world. This is general culture!!!

    I was 2/3 fact and 1/3 joke. That's pretty good I'd say!
    I get files without extensions all the time that are impossible without a little knowledge to open. Earlier this week I got this. I made due and found what it was. It's not an amazingly hard thing to do. Bad art preparation doesn't exclusively burn Windows users.
    You don't come to a design forum and cite windows marketshare without expecting some friendly jabs. Mac's Adobe CS3 sales were somewhere around 75% of the total sales, so touting 5% is kind of just asking for flames. It may be shifting more toward PC's, but I've only ever seen one person submit a job to our print shop that used the PC version of InDesign.
    Renaming groups of files to include extensions should be pretty easy for any graphic artist. I've 100 more issues with people having jpegs mislabeled as tiffs than I've had file extensions. Open them in a text editor and figure out what they are. Link management is something any artist should know and it is the obligation of the person inheriting the art to sort it out. If you have issues with what you get provided to you either find someone else to provide the files to you, or if they are a customer that you don't want to lose the business to you are forced to deal with it.
    If it was easy they wouldn't call it work.

  • Downloaded JDK Package is Missing File Extension

    I am trying to download and install the latest JDK package for windows 64 bit.  The downloaded file doesn't contain the .exe extension that is shown in the download page so I can't install the software.  The name of the downloaded file is jdk-7u45-windows-x64 (without a file extension).  Where can I get the correct file to download?  Thanks

  • Bridge removing file extension after batch rename

    Hi All,
    I've been having trouble with what appears to be a problem with Bridge in Photoshop CS2. I'm well aware this is an older version but, in this case, I don't think that should matter. Here is my situation:
    After batch renaming jpeg files, I've had a problem with Bridge simply stripping off the file extension on all the newly renamed files. This never happens right away...always later. In other words, I'll batch rename a folder full of photos without issue, note that the rename was successful, and then return to that same folder a short time later to find white thumbnails and missing file extensions. This has happened exactly the same way on two different computers - and always with the delay.
    This is getting to be very annoying. Has anyone had or heard of a similar issue? Thanks very much...

    First use the menu tools / cache / purge cache for folder, if still in trouble restart Bridge holding down option key to refresh preferences

    Hi Experts
    I've configured FireFighter in ECC 5.0

  • Pdf file extension missing on export

    That's it really - the pdf file extension is always missing when I export from Pages 09 to PDF. This causes Windows users problems especially when attached to emails. Any way to force Pages to add the extension?

    I repeat:
    I uses MacOS X since 10.3.
    I use iWork since the delivery of iWork '08 then iWork '09.
    I never got a document created by a 'modern' application without the extension name appended.
    So I continue to think that if an extension is missing it's because the user made something wrong.
    Maybe installing a third party component fooling the OS.
    They are a lot of such "enhancers" which introduce oddities in the system behavior but I can't guess what is installed on your machine.
    Just an example.
    I tested on three macIntel machines running 10.5.6 or 10.5.7.
    The menu items Format > Font Bold and Italic are always disabled when TextEdit is using "Plain Text" format.
    On the machine of a correspondant, the items are enabled in such setting.
    I'm quite sure that there is a beast changing the application's behavior but I can't guess which it is.
    Back to the Finder setting.
    It's not designed to Hide all extensions names.
    It it designed to Show all of them or don't show all (which means that some may continue to be displayed).
    As far as I know, the behavior is this one:
    if a document is save when the Finder is set to "Always display the extensions", unchecking the box will not hide the extension.
    if a document is saved when the Finder is NOT set to "Always display the extensions", checking the box will display the extension, unchecking it will hide the extension.
    If you use the Finder with the box checked, the extensions of the files created on your machine will always be displayed.

  • File extension missing for new blog entry pages

    I have a blog and have created new entries, but I can't publish "because the file does not have a file extension." (I clicked on the publish button and also tried in the menu "Publish to Mac.com." Neither works.
    I thought whatever was necessary to connect a new entry to my blog was created automatically. I'm not even sure what a file extension is. What is it?
    In the Site Inspector I can do nothing. All possible commands are grayed out. Maybe I'm not supposed to make a hyperlink for a file.
    Thanks for any help you can give. Edify

    Will I have to clear the cache every time I want to upload new material?
    you don't have to clear the cache to upload the material, you sometimes have to clear the browser's cache to see your new page,  for the old page in the cache may prevent your browser from displaying the new page properly.
    BTW, the same is true for any visitor to your site - if you change your page frequently and find that you have to empty the cache, then any visitor to your site also will experience the same problem and should know that he/she should empty the cache if the page looks funny.

  • Custom File Extension for Microsoft Access Text Driver (*.txt, *.csv)

    I'm trying to use a custom file extension for the Microsoft Access Text Driver (*.txt, *.csv) driver.
    I have updated the FileExtns registry to have my new extension.
    When I issue the following it does not work.
    select [NoName]
    from openrowset('MSDASQL'
               ,'Driver={Microsoft Access Text Driver (*.txt, *.csv)};
                    DefaultDir=c:\filedir'
               ,'select * from "file.lst"')
    If I make the file a .csv it works fine.  However, if it has an extension of not CSV or TXT (in this case .lst, which is in the registry setting) extension it throws the following error and cannot seem to find a solution to it.
    OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "(null)" returned message "[Microsoft][ODBC Text Driver] Cannot update. Database or object is read-only.". Msg 7350, Level 16, State 2, Line 1 Cannot get the column information from
    OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "(null)".
    In addition, (although I can probably find this elsewhere), I need to have the first line 'BLANK' so that it does not miss data (there is no header row).  Is there  a way to use OPENROWSET without BULK to basically include all rows as data?
    Any help is appreciated.

    Hi,
    According to your description, I did a test with your script, and got the same message as your post. Usually, by default, the Microsoft Access Text Driver (*.txt, *.csv) supports the four extensions file, such as *.asc, *.csv, *.tab, *.txt. To solve this issue,
    I recommend you try to save the LST file in the above format, then use OPENROESET to get data from the supported extensions file in SQL Server.
    In addition, the
    OPENROWSET function is mainly used to retrieve remote data from an OLEDB data source, when you use OPENROWSET without BULK, provider_name is a necessary parameter in the script. However, the OPENROWSET (BULK...) is mainly called from a SELECT…FROM clause
    within an INSERT statement, when importing bulk data from a data file into SQL Server table. Thus if you need to import bulk data, you should use the basic  syntax: INSERT ... SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET(BULK...), also there are some alternatives, such as
    BULK INSERT
    and
    BCP .
    Thanks

  • Can you add new file extensions to be treated as C source?

    Hi, using Sun Studio 9, is it possible to add a new file extension to those treated as C sources? I can see how to do it for header files (Options -> IDE Configuration -> System -> Object Types -> C and C++ Header Data Objects -> Extensions and MIME types) but this option is not available for C files.
    In case anyone's wondering why you'd want to do this: we use .pc extensions for C files containing embedded SQL statements. It's then pretty simple to make a .pc.c rule in makefiles to run the pre-compiler.

    >What do you mean Sandee?<br /><br />Robert,<br /><br />Sandee's comment did come across as a bit strong, eh. InDesign is better than Quark  for the most part. (Hey,even Quark has it's good points. <g>) But they are different and preconceptions of how to do certain things can hinder a user from using the program to it's best advantage. This goes both ways, but long time Quark users will almost certainly have developed some bad habits that should be broken if using InDesign. [check out theInDesigner.com podcasts. the first few are audio only but the first one in particular deals with this idea, and others reinforce it with specifics.]<br /><br />Your concern about Quark Project files does not fit into this catagory though. You will not find a comparable feature in ID. But I don't think you'll miss it as much as you think.<br /><br />I can't answer your questions about Bridge and Version Cue. I have no experience with them. [there are videocasts on Adobe TV that may give you an idea of how useful Bridge can be. Cafe Fibonacci Ep1, touches on it, Lazy Designer has a couple of episodes that show some not so obvious features.] Essentially Bridge is a common repository for all your files, and that can include your colleagues. But it's more than a way to catalogue and codify your files, you can access the rest of the suite from Bridge, you can even access specific functions of the other applications directly within Bridge.<br /><br />Version Cue manages projects. It keeps track of who did what to where and what version is current. It also allows you to submit different versions for consideration and revert specific items of your layout to previous versions  or is that Bridge? Hopefully someone with a better grasp of Bridge and Version Cue will come to your rescue. But it's obvious that there is a lot of work group functionality built in to CS.

  • Video upload from Droid X to computer....file extension .3gp not recognized be any of my players.

    I uploaded a couple of video files from my Droid X to my computer.  They have and extension of .3gp.  None of my players will recognize them.  Can anyone help with this?

    Sorry, bud....didn't mean to confuse you.  I plugged in my phone to my computer and uploaded 3 video files from the phone to the computer.  The apps that I have on my computer (Windows Media Player, QuickTime, Irfanview, etc) will not play the files. The file extension is .3gp.  I have associated .3gp with each one of the players and they just will not open a .3gp file.  I downloaded several video converters to see if I could change the extension, but the converters will  not recognize the .3gp extension either.  I'm thinking that there is a codec (not really sure what a 'codec' is????) that is missing from the original phone files and my computer software(s) cannot 'unzip' the files.  Guess I'm just screwed.  I've tried everything I can think of.
    Since my phone is dependant on Google, I thought maybe the Mobile Video Player Pro app would go thru my gmail and I would be able to copy it to my computer.  Wrong!!!  The app downloaded directly to my phone, so, 'screwed', again...lol.

  • Embedded Windows Media PLayer With Non-Standard File Extension

    I have embedded a windows media player in a asp.net web page, using the usual
    <object> and <embed> tags. The video is served by an ashx (http handler). When I try to play the video, I usually (but not always) get an error message telling me that the file extension (ashx) does not match the file format.
    This happens in IE (8, 9, 10, 11) and also in Firefox (latest) with the WMP plugin.
    I know that the tags (with classid, etc) are correct because the media player displays and allows me to click the 'play' button.
    The ashx returns the correct mime type (video/x-ms-wmv) and a valid file name (somevideo.wmv) in the response headers. I have tried content-disposition attachment and inline.
    I have tried urls using 'http://', 'https://', and '//' (which I prefer)
    If I put the url (including the .ashx) of the video file in the browser address bar directly, the video downloads and plays in the standalone media player.
    If I modify the object tag to use a direct path to the video file (/somewhere/somevideo.wmv), it works - but I can't use this as a solution.
    The same ashx serves up video and audio in various other formats with out any fuss - it just seems that the embedded windows media player doesn't like it.
    This has been working for several years - I think this is some new behavior, though I can't identify what has changed, other than browser updates.
    Any ideas on what could be causing this? Am I missing something simple?

  • Elements 5 on Vista will not open. Missing files

    I have installed Photoshop elements 5.0 and the updater 5.02. Elements will not open and indicates several missing files. This is a brand new Windows vista HP machine. the missing files are "FAST CORE ROUTINES MODULE" , 'MMX CORE ROUTINES MODULE" , and "MULTIPROCESSOR SUPPORT" .  Any suggestions?  I uninstalled once and followed the Updater 5.02 instructions to be certain that I installed in a folder "Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0'

    Thank you Paige, You put me on the right track. I also found another much older message at this link...
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/1487633#1487633
    I not only uninstalled, but followed the instructions for "deep cleaning" all remanents of Elements,  from folders, and even the registry. I had to change viewing files to viewing hidden files and all extensions, and deleted the Adobe Application Folder in Users\name   folder and  THAT along with your hint to install as Administrator did the trick.  The application folder deletion seemed to finalize the installation... I have not tested all components yet, but now at least I can begin testing!!!  Thank you for your response.

  • Removing file extension using REGEX

                    // User didn't add the XLS extension; add it automatically
                    if (file.getName ().lastIndexOf (".") > 0)
                        fileName = file.getName ().toLowerCase ().replaceAll (".*$", ".xls");
                        System.out.println ("*** ALREADY HAS AN EXTENSION ***");
                        System.out.println ("Renamed to " + fileName);
                    ...What I'm trying to do is remove a file extension from a string and add my own. For example, in my application, I'm checking to see if there is a period in the file.getName() string. If there is, I want to replace anything from the period on with nothing, but I don't think my regular expression is right.
    If I type in "file.txt", I get:
    *** ALREADY HAS AN EXTENSION ***
    Renamed to .xls.xls
    Basically, my regular expression is incorrect, but I don't see what I'm missing.

        private void saveFile ()
            useFileFilter (".xls", "Excel Files (*.xls)");
            String fileName;
            int returnVal = fc.showSaveDialog (this);
            if (returnVal == JFileChooser.APPROVE_OPTION)
                File file = fc.getSelectedFile ();
                if (file.getName ().endsWith (CustomFilter.getExtension()))
                    // User kept the XLS extension
                    fileName = file.getName ();
                    System.out.println ("Saving " + fileName);
                else
                    // User added their own extension; change it
                    if (file.getName ().lastIndexOf (".") != -1)
                        fileName = file.getName ().replaceAll ("\\..+", "") + CustomFilter.getExtension();
                        System.out.println ("*** ALREADY HAS AN EXTENSION ***");
                        System.out.println ("Renamed to " + fileName);
                    // User didn't add an extension; add it
                    else
                        fileName = file.getName () + CustomFilter.getExtension();
                        System.out.println ("*** Saving " + fileName);
            else
                System.out.println ("User cancelled the dialog.");
        }I found that your regex works best in this case.fileName = file.getName ().replaceAll ("\\..+", "") + CustomFilter.getExtension();If I try to save a file as tEsT.tar.gz, my output is:
    *** ALREADY HAS AN EXTENSION ***
    Renamed to tEsT.xls.
    If I used the other user's example:fileName = file.getName ().replaceAll ("\\.[^.]*$", "") + CustomFilter.getExtension();it wouldn't be correct. If I entered a filename such as tEsT.tar.gz, my output would be:
    *** ALREADY HAS AN EXTENSION ***
    Renamed to tEsT.tar.xls
