Missing Files in albums

Hi all,   I have just downloaded PSE 10 trial version and find that most of my photos in my albums are marked as missing photos with the little yellow ?  Could someone please tell me why this is so and how can I fix the problem.  I can reconnect each photo separately but this would take months to do.  I have tried "reconnect" and the programme freezes so that is no help either.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Many thanks,  marjapples.

Put the photos back in their original folders. Never move photos using the OS e.g. Explorer or Finder on the Mac otherwise Organizer will have no idea what you did.

  • Why lost Missing Files & Missing Albums after conversion to Mac?

I have 2 issues. Firstly, by Reconnecting for Missing Files, the system searches but never finds the photos. Is there another way of reconnecting my Missing Files. These appear to be photos which I enhanced on Elements but saved to My Piictures or  photos imported from another camera to my laptop. Secondly, I wanted to transfer all my photos on to a new Mac from my Windows laptop. I have downloaded the Elements to Mac on the Mac but when I backed up all photos to an external hard drive from Windows, then loaded to my Mac, all the photos came across but none of my Albums. Where can I go from here please? Any advice gratefully received. Many thanks.

    Hi Barbara,
Thanks for your reply. I would appreciate any help you can offer.
I am using PSE 11 and this was installed on my old Windows laptop (which I have been using for a couple of years now) and the Mac version on my new MacBook Pro. Both discs were supplied with the original purchase of Elements 11 but I had not used the Mac version until now.
I loaded the Mac version of Elements to my Mac and this opened just fine but obviously with no photos showing.
I backed up my photos on Elements/Windows on to a new external hard drive, then plugged that hard drive into my Mac. I then transferred my photos from the external hard drive into the Elements on my Mac. All the photos came over but NOT the Albums to which my 10,000 photos had all been allocated in my Windows version.
I know that some 500 photos are "Missing" but I think that this is a different matter (see my original Forum Question log).
I look forward to hearing from you.
    Thanks
    Stephen

  • Missing Files not Missing...

I have all my media on an external 4TB drive which is directly attached to my Mac Mini via USB 3.0 and which my MacBook accesses through Sharing on my home network. At the moment, both computers have WiFi turned off and are directly plugged into the router. Both the iTunes library on my Mac Mini and my MacBook are set to see this drive and all of its folders and files as the source for their media in the Advanced tab.
Previously, I had all my media on two external 2TB drives with this same set up, having used TuneSpan to allow both machines to find the files I put on the second drive. Previous to copying over everything from both drives to the new 4TB drive everything was fine with both machines seeing everything they were supposed to both before and after using TuneSpan.
I will note that the two machines are using different iTunes .itl library files, with the MacBook having less content in general but also a number of songs which are not included in the Mac Mini's .itl file.
On my Mac Mini which is running the most recent versions of Mt. Lion and iTunes, everything is good, all files are seen, no problem. On my MacBook which is running Leopard and iTunes 10.5.8, there are a number of movies which have exclamation points next to them. When I try to direct iTunes to locate the missing files, it sees the files just fine but the Open button is always greyed out so I cannot select the files; these same files are found and play fine on the Mac Mini and the file sizes are the same on both the old 2TB drive and the new 4TB drive. When I recopy the file from the old 2TB drive to replace the existing copy and then again direct iTunes on the MacBook to locate the file, it will now allow me to Open it even though it's the exact same file. When it asks me if I want to use this location to find the other missing files, it goes through some process and tells me this was not possible.
If I grab a bunch of the folders for the films that this is happening with at a time and recopy them over to the 4TB drive, the MacBook's iTunes continues to refuse to see the files. Only if I individually go through and recopy only the exact file it is refusing to use will it then agree to Open and Locate the file.
This is effecting about 65 movies which vary in size from 700MB to 3.5GB. They are films from every genre, some converted from VHS, others extracted from DVD, others re-encoded from .avi or .flv and some which originated as .mp4s.
The only other thing which seems worth noting is that the video files which the MacBook refuses to Open are depicted as music files with a music note on them despite them all either ending in .mp4 or .m4v and on the Mini they are shown as they actually are with the album art as the icon.
What is going on?! Why is it doing this?! How can I force the MacBook's iTunes to use the files it sees?!

I tried something almost like you suggested, John.
The problem was, as I perhaps didn't explain properly, that the files were in places and exactly where LR thought they were (and still listed as missing!). Because I can right-click and select "Show in explorer", and the file will be shown in the correct folder.
But you gave me an idea to the simple solution:
    Select All -> Delete Photo.
Instead of Delete I chose Remove, so that the files only would be removed from LR but not deleted from the disk.
Then I could synchronize the folder with the files. They showed up again and is no longer listed as missing.
Not that they ever really were missing, but still ...

  • How do I recover Missing Files

I have several groups of pictures that have gone missing since I first used Picasa to share some photos. I could care less about a lot of them but there were a couple of hundred of my trip to England I would really like to recover. The thumbnails show up in my Photoshop Album Starter Edition 3.0 but when you click on them they say that they are missing. These photos are no longer in MY Pictures either and the only thing in those folders is a Picasa.ini .
I have also checked my recycle bin but there is nothing in there. Does anyone have any help as to how I may recover these photos?

It is a common misconception that Starter Edition 'stores', or copies, your files into it. But the program does not move or copy files at all, rather it scans your system's My Pictures directory, and generates miniature versions of your pictures (called thumbnails) so that you can browse a 'flat' list of thumbnails of your photos, overcoming the inconvenience of having to go into separate folders in Windows Explorer to have to find files. The thumbnails, as well as any tags, and Albums that you create in Starter Edition are all stored in the Photoshop Album catalog file, separate from your pictures, and your pictures remain where you originally copied them to your computer.
If you use Photoshop Album to subsequently download files from a digital camera or scanner, the default location where the program will create those files would be in the My Pictures>Digital Camera Photos folder. But if you do NOT use Photoshop Album Starter edition to download files from your camera, then you will find that folder empty.
The thumbnails in the Starter Edition catalog will exist, even if you decide to move or delete the original photos that were added to the program. This will cause files in the Photoshop Album catalog to become 'disconnected' from the original photos. To reconnect the files, you can use the File>Reconnect Missing files command to see if the program can locate the original files in a new location, and once again re-link the catalog thumbnails to the files they once referenced.
Since Photoshop Album has been discontinued, I recommend that folks find an alternative solution. One alternative that will preserve most of what you've created in Starter Edition is the Photoshop Elements 8 trial. Install that, and it will automatically convert the Photoshop Album catalog to a current format, and the program will not time out, as Starter Edition did. If you want to purchase more Editing power, you can also choose to purchase the full program, but it's not required.
If you are like many who have come to this forum wondering how you can get to your photos, now that the program has become locked or expired, don't worry; your photos have never been moved by Photoshop Album; they remain wherever you intially put them, on your hard drive. To get to them, you can navigate your file system using Windows Explorer. They are typically in your My Documents>My Pictures folder. Here is a handy How-To that you could refer to to find photos on your system, as well as some other tips for how you can use folders to keep your photos organized: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/maintain/filemgmt.mspx
    Hope those tips help!

  • Missing Photos and albums in iphoto on the iMac (2012)

on the imac I´m missing all the photos till 2011, and on the macbook air all till 2008 and between 2008 and 2011 i`m also missing some.
Has somebody any idea why iphoto doesn´t show or has deleted all the photos and how can i bring them back? On the iMac I´m also missing all the Albums, it just doesn´t show them and i can´t find a button in the settings to switch this...
so if anybody knows how i can fix this...

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
iPhoto 8 (09) and earlier- run the options indicated
iPhoto 9 (11) and later- run  Option #4 to rebuild the database
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager (iPhoto 8 or earlier or IPhoto 11 and later) and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the
File ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 8 or earlier)
    or
Library ➙ Rebuild Library (iPhoto 9 or later)
menu option to rebuild the library.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

Another good thing to do from time to time is to boot from your install CD, then choose "Disk Utility", then do a check (and repair, if necessary) of your boot disk.
You can't verify or fix a disk you've started from, thus the need to boot from a CD. You can boot from a second hard disk to do this test if it has MacOS on it.

  • Reconnecting missing files?

I have a new computer with Windows7 and PSE9.  Because of the difficulty I had on my old PC with trying to reconnect missing files, I decided to start afresh on my new PC.  So, I put all my images from Windows Explorer onto an External Hard Disk and brought them into the Organiser on my new PC from there. So far so good; not a single ? mark in sight.  However, I was soon to be disillusioned because today, having assembled all my images into Albums, I was putting tags on them in one Album when, suddenly, yellow ?marks appeared on all the images in that Album.  But, as I scrolled down the Album, by click and drag on the vertical slider, the ?marks disappeared line by line only to reappear as soon as I lifted my finger off the mouse. I most certainly had not moved or touched the images outside PSE because I went straight to the Organiser on booting up and never left it until coming to this Forum.
Looking back at previous posts on the forum I see the problem reappearing with monotonous regularity since 2005, with nobody seemingly to find a satisfactory answer.  One really would have thought that Adobe could have found an answer by now!!
I wonder whether anybody has found an answer other than the painful use of the Reconnect command?

    Hi Geeone2009,
Yellow question mark on top left of an image indicates that: that particular image is missing. The thumbnails you see in Organizer are just the 'shortcut' to the image. These are not your real images.
As you know whenever you move/rename a file, corresponding shortcut gets broken. Organizer does the same. Whenever you move/rename (or both) media outside Organizer (from OS), then Organizer losses the track of that media. Consequently it will show a yellow question mark on top left corner of image.
Your case is somewhat different from that mentioned above and the root to this problem lies with the handling of external hard drive (hdd) by windows OS. When you plugin a external hdd, Win OS recognizes it as an internal hard drive. As your media is on hdd so when you un-plug the hdd, the  media (which was present on hdd) gets missing in EO (elements organizer). If you images were on a removable drive (flash drive)/CD/DVD/Network locations, and if you unplug the source then your images will get offline (a red color badge will appear on your images).
Now i will suggest the following steps-
    1. Plug-in your hdd.
    2. In EO select all images and click 'File->move'. Here give the location where you want to move (delete from hdd and copy it on system's internal hard drive).
In case you don't have enough space on your hdd, then  you need to plugin your device whenever you want to do some editing.
Let me know if you have any queries.

  • Missing files following time machine restore

I recently had my hard drive replaced by Apple following a recall of the particular drive installed in my machine when I bought it. Before taking it into Apple I had completely backed up my machine onto an external drive using Time Machine. Once the drive was replaced I restored the system using Time Machine but since have noticed a couple of quirks.
The first is that I'm missing files from iPhoto. The missing files are from my most recent upload and are a combination of images and video which were uploaded together. iPhoto knows they should be there because it's showing the file name (and video length for the video files) but the files themselves are missing and cannot be found when searching for them in Spotlight or when using the "show file" option in iPhoto.
The other major bugbear is that I'm missing a lot of my album artwork within iTunes - this includes for music, TV shows and movies. These were all there before the hard drive was replaced but are missing following the reinstall.
Fortunately I asked Apple to provide me with the original drive which I have but I'm unsure about what I need to do to fix the two issues above. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Restore your iPhoto and iTunes libraries in the time-travel interface. If that doesn't work, try an older snapshot. Some files may be missing because the drive was malfunctioning. That was the reason for the recall.

  • Missing files - any way to save pics another way?

I've read through some of the other posts, but I haven't seen this addressed:
My camera automatically uploads pics to the Album Starter 3.2. I then let the program delete the pics from my camera. Then I got motiviated and cleaned up all my saved pics, moved them to folders, etc and deleted then reformated my media card.
Now, I can see 12 pics in the Album Starter, but they have the ripped red icon on the bottom. I tried using Recuva to search on my camera and computer - no luck.
Ok - so...because I can see them in the program - is there ANY way to copy the pic, or do something to get them out of the program? I'm afraid to close the Album Starter for fear that they'll then be gone forever! I've tried to save as, copy, etc...no luck. All I get is the "searching for missing file..".
    Thanks for any help!
    Heather

Ok I have been thinking about the downloading of my photos from my camera to my PC, you may have already found what I've found but here is what I've found:
When PS Album Starter Photo Downloader page comes up in the top right hand corner, Box 1, it already has the name of the device from which you are downloading your photos and the USB drive from which they are being obtained.
Below in Box 2 "Save Files: Location" it states the same location as the one you're downloading from, that is the USB you've plugged your camera into, so you are saving your photos back onto your camera. You need to change the save location to your C drive or USB memory stick.
The pictures you think have been deleted have been saved back onto your camera even though you deleted them when prompted!!
This is what I've found with my 'lost' photos and have, this morning managed to download them, again, from my camera.
Give this a go, I hope it works for you as it did for me.

  • Photoshop elements 11and finding missing files

I had a problem with an account on my photoshop so had to open a new account on my imac. I had spent quite a bit of time editing my Alaska pictures and somehow now they wont let me move them to my new downloaded photoshop.  it says they are missing files and if I try to find them it will search forever and not find them.. is there another way to get them to my other photoshop or even if i could put them on my external hard drive.  that is where the problem started in my old account is when I bought that.  I kept getting the beach ball spinning and couldnt get it to stop so apple just suggested I open a new account.

I am sorry:  There was a word misprint that could be confusing.  Please ignore my previous post.  Here is the corrected version:
The Missing Files thing is very difficult.  I found a pretty easy way around it.
My newest photos are in a folder (windows folder) called 2013.  I have other folders, such as 1990s, 2000-5, etc. The trick is to make a new empty folder called Temp, in the same location as your other folders. For me, this temp folder, and those other folders, are located within a folder called Adobe, which is within another folder called "my pictures".  I import all new photos into this temp folder. Then I add them to the catalog by selecting File, and choosing search and finding the temp folder. Then I choose "get media" which seals the deal.
When you choose Get Media, the organizer only displays the new photos you've just added to the catolog. Once you see these new photos,  immediately add them to any albums within photoshop.  The next thing I do is move the photos to a folder where you really want them, say 2013 for example. This gets them out of the temp folder. YOU HAVE TO DO THIS WITHIN PHOTOSHOP ITSELF--IF YOU MOVE PICTURES THE TRADITIONAL WAY FROM FOLDER TO FOLDER, THIS CONFUSES THE ORGANIZER. On a windows version of photoshop, I highlight these photos within photoshop and choose file/move on the organizer menu and select the folder.  This moves all of the photos from the temp folder into the folder that you really want them to go into. You're done.
I've done this hundreds of times with no missing files problem until yesterday! A glitch happened, whereby I chose to delete the photos and selected the option to also delete them from the temp folder.  When I tried to back up elements, it warned me that there were missing files. Since they were originally in the temp folder, I knew where to look. The beauty of the temp folder is that if you ever get the "missing files" notification, it will be easy to find them. If you hadn't used a temp folder and instead had thrown the pics in a folder with a thousand other shots, it would be really tough to find them.
Since I knew the temp folder was involved in all this, here's how I found the "missing files": I used the "my folders" area of photoshop, which is directly under the albums and has a yellow icon. I clicked onto the arrow to the left of this folder, found the temp folder, and all of the missing pictures were suddenly seen in my organizer. However, I knew that the temp folder on my computer was empty. This was confusing to me. Why would the organizer think these photos were in the temp folder, when they were actually in my recycle bin?  I clicked on all of the photos that were supposedly in the temp folder, even though I knew they weren't there. Clicking highlighted the photos in blue. Then I right clicked and chose "delete from catalog". Problem solved. No more missing files.
All of this stuff took me 8 hours to figure out on my own.  I hope I save you some time.

  • Missing files.. ( pictures) why am i getting this message every time i try to open a pic..  JUSTY downloaded PSE12

missing files.. ( pictures) why am i getting this message every time i try to open a pic..  JUST downloaded PSE12@

    Hi,
When you are looking at the small pictures in the organizer, you are seeing the thumbnails that were stored within the organizer catalog when you first imported them into the organizer. When you first imported the files, the organizer saved the location of that file and the pointer to the thumbnail. When you try to edit or print the image, the organizer can no longer find the image at the stored location - the file is missing.
You might like to read through this to see if it helps explain things to you
    Photoshop Elements (PSE) knowledge base.
The changing drive letter is the most common cause when images are stored on an external drive.
I'm not sure what you mean about when you say "did not go back into categories like I had them on version 7".
If you updated to version 12 from version 7 on the same PC, there was no need to move any of the images so they should be in the same folders as before. The catalog should have been converted for you (if you allowed it) and so all your albums and tags should have been preserved.

  • Question Mark.... missing files....

The location for my 'Saved Files' is /Users/Me/Pictures/Adobe and when I click on that folder and 'Get Info' it tells me it the size of the folder is over 31Gig.
The folder is full of .xmp files....
When I open PSE 12, I see all of my thumbnails, but they all have a question mark in the top left hand corner. Whenever I click on a picture, it says, "Searching for missing file".... but never finds it.
I'm pretty sure I know how I created this problem, but I don't know how to fix it.
I'd imported all my media from iPhoto 11... then I deleted the iPhoto Library, to eliminate duplicate data bases. Takes up double memory.... but then, I also saw, in the Adobe 'Saved Files' path, a folder called, iPhoto Library Media. I thought this was also a duplicate folder of what I already had in /Users/Me/Pictures/Adobe. So I backed it up to an external disc before deleting it.
Then I did a 'Backup Catalogue', also to a external disc....... Now all my files are AWOL. It seems I can do a 'Restore' from the backed up catalogue, but there have been a few photo's changed since then, and I'm prompted to 'Backup' again before Restoring.... bit of a mess.....
    Any pointers appreciated....

I can give you a pointer for the future once you find the files. So let's fast forward to the future, when you've assembled all of your photos in Elements. First, you've got to remember never to move any photos to a new folder by dropping and dragging. Instead, open Elements and choose FILE/MOVE instead.
Here's another tip to avoid missing or reconnect photos warnings in the future. I added a folder named Temp (for temporary). It is located in the same hierarchy as my other folders contained in the Adobe folder within the photos folder. I now move all new photos into this Temp folder BEFORE opening Photoshop Elements 11. After I open the organizer I choose FILE/GET MEDIA and locate the temp folder. I then tag all the photos in that folder, assign them to albums and edit them. After that's all done,  I use Elements to move the new images to a different folder that is already being monitored by Elements (by choosing FILE/MOVE as mentioned above). This clears the temp folder. The extra few seconds means that I never get the "missing photos" or "reconnect photos" warnings any longer. Plus, I can check the temp folder to make sure all of the images I worked on have moved out and into the folder that I actually wanted to use in the first place. It's pretty fool proof and you don't forget where the photos are located if you close the program by mistake or if your computer freezes. They will be in that Temp folder until you move them using the FILE/MOVE technique.
    Good luck with Vaishali's solution.

  • PSE 6 - Reconnect Missing Files... None there!

When I click on Reconnect All Missing Files, after a few moments the "Searching for missing file" box shows up and I click on Browse. In the next box that appears, there's supposed to be a list of all of the missing files but my problem is that there are NO file listed..... ?
Any way to recover from this? I have over 10K photos tagged in my album.
    Thanks

    Some thoughts:
    1. When the "Searching for missing file" shows up, it usually provides the filename it is searching for. If there's a filename, what is it? Use the Find > By Filename to find all photos with that filename and then double-check that the files really aren't missing by viewing them in full-screen mode (F11).
    2. Do a File > Catalog > Repair and select repair anyway if no errors are reported.
    3. When you reinstalled your hard drive, did you restore it fully or partially using a disk-cloning utility, like Ghost?

  • ITunes can't find missing files, though there right there?!

I switched from PC to Macbook air reacently. I have always keept an external HD for all my music. I managed to get my old iTunes Library copied over to the Mac no problem and the HD is running smoothly too. iTunes has found over 6000 files but is still struggling to locate over 1400 tracks...so here is my problem...I can literally see an entire album of missing tracks. Show iTunes where one is and then it asks if I want to find other missing tracks — AND THE REST OF THE MISSING TRACKS ARE RIGHT THERE IN THE SAME FOLDER and it says it cannot find any more of the 1,486 missing tracks. In the past it usually found at least those tracks in the same album. I have to manually click on every single tune to locate its file location now - no fun for over 1400 missing files!! How come that iTunes can read some files fine and others not at all though there are all listed in the external HD as before?
..any suddestions or ideas to find a solution?
    Thanks a lot.

Mike - please reply to the post rather than message me direct.  Others on here are far more qualified than I.
if it is saying all your photos are now missing then I would guess you have changed a folder/subfolder above where they are stored.  So if you have the photos all in ...\Pictures\Mike\Adobe and then at some point you changed the Mike folder to be called Flano then all the links will break.  If this is what may have happened rename the folder back to what it was and all the links should be OK again.  I would still recommend trying to find at least 1 of the missing photos using a search in My Computer just to ensure they are still there somewhere.

  • Missing Files that are found and lost again

I have Photoshop Elements 10 that I am using with Windows XP Service Pack 3, a Pentium 4 CPU with 3 GHz, 2 GB of RAM and 48.6 GB of free disk space.
Yellow question marks continue to appear on the top left of some images in one of my catalogs even though these images have not actually been moved. The Organizer searches for the "missing file" and finds it quickly but why is it "missing"? I have gone through the albums in this catalog, completed the missing file searches on all the images so that no yellow question marks appear and when I go back to the catalog the next time I find the yellow question marks are there again! What is making the found file become lost again?

And what happens if it is 'unchecked' ?
It's good to check periodically if there are missing files but there is no necessity to let the Organizer do it automatically. Since checking is very quick, I am used to do it before any maintenance in the Organizer : backups, optimization...
