Missing Files, It finally happened???? Think I know why...

I have seen a number of reports about pictures and music disappearing from their sd card and until now I never seen it happen but today I had a number of photos came up missing and I noticed when it happened that may be the reason for this.  This appears to happened after I mounted my device as a Mass Storage device and computer reported errors on the card and wanted to scan the drive and I allowed the scan and right after this happened the images came up missing.  I have tried to identify the location that the check disk normally place files when they are moved do to errors but I havent had no luck yet but its not a issue because I backup my card regularly.

Doea the phone or windows show that the space is still used up? If not then I think Windows deemed the files corrupt and deleted them. You can scan the card with Recurva and see it finds anything. Never actually thought of the idea of defragging a SD card, maybe you could try that also.
The space reflects that the files have been deleted and I realize that once the files are labeled as corrupt the windows will not recover these files but I decided to dig through my software collection and used Undelete Plus from http://undeleter.net/adpages/undeleter/specific-file/?file=pictures&gclid=CNqgs_C10aQCFR5Kgwod51Y-Ig and was able to restore almost all the files that I had deleted.

The iTunes "buy" button doesn't seem to be working. I click it and nothing happens. Anyone know why? Thanks.

Apple made some sort of programming change on 12.26.12 to their iTunes system that suddenly made the Buy button non-functional specifically in the directly-out-of-the-box Snow Leopard (10.6.3). [I had Leopard, same as you, 10.5.8, and that was still working then. I installed Snow Leopard a couple of days ago to my MacBook, and discovered the Buy Button didn't work.
First step: Pull down "Software Update" from the Apple menu (that annoying thing we always ignore.) If you're using Snow Leopard 10.6.3, it'll upgrade you for free to 10.6.8, and that should solve your iTunes problem. (I don't know if there are any upgrades for 10.5.8, but unlike the other ungodly system upgrades, Snow Leopard is only $20. Because Apple is growing increasingly stupid, you can't buy it online--you have to call customer care.)
Hope this helps. Let me know if it does.

  • IPad apps show waiting but nothing happening? Anyone know why

Ipad3 apps show waiting but nothing is happening does anyone know why or what to do

This can happen from time to time. Something is clogging the download queue on your iPad. See if one of these suggestions helps you get this sorted out.
    1. Tap the "waiting" icon and see if you can pause it. If it does pause, then tap it again and see if it will resume. If that works, repeat the same steps for each "waiting" icon.
    2. Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
    3. Make sure that you do not have a stalled download in iTunes - a song or podcast .... if you have a download in there that did not finish, complete that one first. Only one thing can download at a time on the iPad so that could be what is causing the problem.
    4. If that doesn't work - sign out of your account, restart the iPad and then sign in again.
Settings>iTunes & App Store>Apple ID. Tap your ID and sign out. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
Go back to Settings>iTunes & App Store>Sign in and then try to update again. Tap one waiting icon only if necessary to start the download stream.
    5. You can also try deleting the waiting icons - tap and hold down on an icon until it wiggles - the tap the X on the icon to delete it. Then try to download again.
    6. You can try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered.
    7. If all else fails, download the updates or the apps in iTunes on your computer and then sync the content to your iPad.

  • Contact groups. My contacts get removed from the groups, not from All Contacts. I don't know why this happens. Anyone know why?

Sometimes the contacts in certain groups are removed and the group is empty.  They do not get deleted, and are still in All Contacts, just get removed from the group.  Then I have to start all over again and add contacts to the groups.  This seems to happen randomly and I don't know why it does.  My contacts are synced with my Yahoo contacts.  I don't know if thats why.  Does this happen to anyone else?

Thank You, thank You ...so much......that feature made me crazy!

that has always been my main point when people ask me why I use linux.  I have it set to do *exactly* what I want it to do, when I want it to do it.  yes, it takes time and dedication, but I also always saw a computer not so much as a vehicle to let me do x, y, or z, but as a real swiss-army-knife type of tool, where I have a set tool for graphic design, programming, browsing, etc.  Each tool is beneficial, each tool needs proper care, and so on.
When other people ask me if they should switch to linux, I ask them, not only how much time and willingness to learn they're prepared to use, but also what exactly their expectations are. Most people (coming from windows) dont really know what they want, because they're used to taking what they get (from microsoft and other companies) so a lot of the time I think they don't know how much choice they have (and responsibility to make those choices).  Most people coming from other OSes I think come with the mentality of "what's linux going to give me that I already get from microsoft/apple?" instead of taking the approach of "what do I want to do with my computer now that I have the tool to set it up how I want it."
kudos to you for setting up as your mother needs it.  You could make a good business setting people's PCs with linux as they need it, though it would take time and dedication on your part.

  • I think I know why my mom is so satisfied with Arch

I set my mom up with Arch a month or two ago (some of you may remember), and I have to tell you, she has never been happier with her computer. This is one kick-ass success story.
I have a theory about this, and I'll try not to provide troll bait.
Microsoft, despite the flaws some of us may perceive it to have, is very successful in the operating system market. Because of their flagship product's popularity, they have to market it and design it to appeal to the broadest possible userbase in order to keep up their popularity. This is, while also a boon, a cause of a strong deficit in their final Windows product.
Apple has very strong, avid supporters, and because they have a smaller userbase, and because their userbase has identified themselves with Apple and its methods sometimes from the start of Apple (or at least their Macintosh line), they know with more certainty the type of computer their users end up wanting. They provide great products, but they still have to design it with a large number of people in mind. It suffers from this in the realm of ultimate customizability; less than Microsoft's Windows, but the problem does persist.
My mother was not happy with Windows. She was quite a bit happier with a Macintosh.
Now from what I can tell, Linux users are by and large control-freaks (I am one too), in that they like to have their computers a certain way; this is one big reason to pick Linux over other available OSes, though as we all know it is not the only one.
Canonical is beginning to suffer from the same aforementioned problems that Microsoft and Apple face because of Canonical's growing userbase and the participation of many inexperienced computer users. I give great kudos for the work Canonical has done with Ubuntu, but like any operating system, it isn't for everyone.
My mother is not a particularly strong computer user, but she knows what she needs, and is willing to voice that. Because I built my mother's Arch Linux computer with my own two hands, keeping her needs and desires in mind for the entire process, her computer is exactly what she wants and needs it to be. It does exactly what she wants and needs it to do. This is simply not possible with the aforementioned operating systems, at least not to the extent that I have achieved with my mom and her Arch Linux computer.
I'm very proud that I can service her computer for her at the drop of a hat, since I still live with my parents. Arch may not be for every inexperienced user, but it certainly fills its role in this house.
My mom is extremely satisfied with her computer, more so than any other computer she has ever used. I attribute that satisfaction in part to my decent GNU/Linux prowess, but mostly to The Arch Way and the general Arch philosophy. In my opinion, this project fulfills its goals more completely than most distributions, owing in part to the aimed simplicity and flexibility.
Thank you, Arch developers. You have created something magical in your project. Keep up the excellent work.

that has always been my main point when people ask me why I use linux.

  • HT200199 Can't import 1080i60 files from Sony RX100. Anyone know why?

I've shot AVCHD 1080p60 and 1080i60 movies and either do not show up. Even though it's written that 1080i60 files should be recognized. Maybe the support for the RX100 is still be worked on. I know Aperture and Lightroom don't support Sony RX100 RAW yet either.

That camera is so new that you're just going to have to wait for RAW support. Your option, in the meantime, is to use the Camera Raw conversion.

  • When I close firefox (version 10, the newest one as of 3-10-12) acrobat reader 5.0 opens. I do not want this to happen. Anyone know why it does that, or how to stop it?

I just upgraded firefox to the new version 10.
I may soon downgrade back to 9, because it looks too much like crome *barf*
    That's not my issue.
When I close firefox, acrobat reader 5.0 starts.
I do not want this to happen.
Is this some virus? something in firefox?
How do I stop this from happening?

Acrobat Reader 5 is very ancient, so I would try uninstalling it (and any other older versions of Reader), then going to [http://get.adobe.com/reader/ http://get.adobe.com/reader/], downloading and installing that. Then, see if you still have the issue

  • My Macbook was getting hot, and I think I know why.

I have a week 22 build and it usually runs anywhere from 40-53C, but yesterday it was running in the 60-75c. I started to get a little worried that maybe my computer was taking a turn for the worst. I noticed that even when I was running just a few programs it was still using 35-50% cpu usage. I closed everything up except for large a download I had going, but I still had a lot of background apps still running in the activity monitor. (oh I close applications usually by having the program active and using "apple + q".) I figured maybe I should just restart my computer when it rebooted I open safari and continued my download and my cpu% dropped where it should have been 5%-10% and thus the temp dropped.
The only thing I did different with my macbook yesterday was mutli-task a plethora of different applications to really put it to the test, but that had been hours before I rebooted. The computer cpu usage would not correct itself until rebooted.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    EAH22:)

You can edit your post for a while immediately after creating it. But don’t wait too long.
If you look at the Activity Monitor shortly after you restart but before you’ve launched any of your programs, you’ll find that there are lots of processes running. This is normal.
When you are running lots of applications at once it may or may not cause the processor to work harder. If the programs are running but not doing anything then the CPU won’t have to work any harder than if you had only one running. OTOH, lets say you start Photoshop running a filter on a batch of files, then run a search/replace on a huge Word file, then start a download in Fetch, and then begin browsing the internet - yep, the computer is going to be quite busy. As the jobs finish, or as you quit the programs, CPU usage will drop.
Your computer was getting warm, but that’s what a computer does when it is being used. I’ve had CPU usage top 90% for quite a long time and the temperature topped 85c. The fans came on and once the CPU usage dropped the temperature also slowly dropped. That’s normal.
Why didn’t the CPU usage drop when you quit everything but Safari? Perhaps Safari was the program hogging the CPU. It does sometimes. Did you look at the Activity Monitor and identify which processes were using lots of cycles? When you are looking at the process list you can click at the top to change how they are sorted. Sort by CPU usage.

This is a common problem with iPhone 4s (and IOS 5)  There isn't ' anything you can do about it, so you're best bet is to go down to the store and get an exchange. If you have an older iPhone (3gs/4) roll back your update from IOS 5 to IOS 4.

  • How do I find out where iTunes thinks missing files are?

I have several hundred "missing" files in my iTunes library but they are all actually on the computer. But I don't remember where the were previously. I add dozens of songs at a time to my library all the time and there is no Earthly way for me to constantly remember where they were before. I don't just want to reimport the files because I have several hundred playlists with these files and it would be completely stupid to edit them all one at a time when all I need to do is to move them back to where iTunes thinks they should be. So where is that? The Windows media player has a column that displays file location. Why doesn't iTunes? (This is so stupid. It makes things -not just this- so much easier when you have the file location in the music list in your music player.)
Is there a way to find out where iTunes thinks the missing files should be at?

    Chris CA wrote:
How do I find out where iTunes thinks missing files are?
The exclamation mark means ITunes doesn't think they are anywhere.
If you right click - get info on a song then view the Info tab, you will see where iTunes last used it from.
I'm not a newbie. I know quite a lot about iTunes. You sound like you don't though because if you did you would know that this is not true. If you "right click - get info on a song" (pressing cancel to the Locate popup) "then view the SUMMARY (not info) tab" you will see "Not Available" where the file location usually is. I wouldn't have asked this question if I hadn't gone through the steps already.
Thanks for trying though. Next time, please try the advice before you give it.
I add dozens of songs at a time to my library all the time and there is no Earthly way for me to constantly remember where they were before
You should not have to remember anything about where they were.
    I agree.
Are you always moving them around?
When I install a new hard drive. Yes. I generally keep everything organized and I let iTunes keep the folder organized but several years ago I used windows media player to organize my media.
Frankly I don't know HOW the recent songs/videos/etc. go missing. But some do. Maybe I accidentally move a folder without realizing it. Mistakes happen. Then I need to move it back but since I didn't know I did it in the first place I can't possibly be expected to remember where I moved it from.
Do you have iTunes prefs -> Advanced Keep ITunes music folder organized ticked and Copy files to iTunes ... ticked?
*OF COURSE!* Again, I'm not a newbie.
I have several hundred playlists with these files
Why would you have several hundred playlists?
I don't mean to sound rude but you sound like an Apple fanboy. Are you trying to tell me how I should use my own program? The answer to the question is I am a salsa instructor/DJ and I am constantly adding songs and videos to my library. Every month I have various salsa events, classes and performances that I do. I use my iPhone for the music. I need to maintain the playlists because students/teachers/studios/clubs/bars/churches/etc. call me back and want a repeat of the great salsa night I gave them a year ago. Naturally my playlists are highly organized into folders. So, I still have them and I need them.
Apple has its own ideas about how people should use its stuff but everyone is unique and our needs therefore are unique too. Apple doesn't realize this and still wants us to do things "the Apple way" even though "the Apple way" only works well for people who want their hand held through everything. This is why I say you sound like a fanboy. You don't know my situation and question if I need hundreds of playlists. I do.
I just need an answer to the question.
Thank you for your reply though. It gave me hope, for a time.

    Hi, Hugo,
In similar cases it helped to remove the GarageBand "Preferences" file from the User Library.
    Open the folder
your home folder > Library > Preferences
and move the file "com.apple.garageband.plist" to the Desktop.
Then try again to launch GarageBand.
