MISSING FIREWIRE CABLE

Was given 20 gb classic ipod second hand from family member who has lost the firewire cable. I synced ipod with my itunes (on my pc) and updated it and now it's asking me to complete the update by plugging it in via the ipod power adapter, which I have. Just missing cable. Suggestions?! (other than buying a new cable which I'd like to avoid!)

Plug it into an unit such as the iPod Hi-Fi, or try this method, or take it to an AASP.

  • Missing firewire ntsc

I have two different macs and they have both started saying “Missing Apple Firewire NTSC” both in the Audio/Video settings and also when I try to Log and Capture in FCP.
I’ve also switched out firewire cables/ports, etc.
    My versions are:
FCP 5.1.4 with QT 7.6.4 on OS 10.4.11
FCP 5.0.4 with QT 7.6.2 on OS 10.4.11
I just can't see how it would be hardware with 2 different machines at the same time.

Did you recently update QT, just prior to this behavior?
FCP5.1.4 works best with QT 7.1 or 7.2.
Here's a link to Jon Chappell's Digital Rebellion blog, which lists these compatibilities...

  • [Missing] Firewire NTSC (720 x 480) option

This happened in 2 edit suites. I fixed it in edit 1 by resetting PRAM and trashing prefs. Edit 2 won't see it.
I can capture via Firewire from this deck (Sony M35U), so I obviously have a connection. System Profiler shows the deck and all its info, so it's obviously recognized by the computer. If I capture via the AJA, I can still set deck control over Firewire, so it's obviously THERE.
Yet, when I go to View/Video Output, it's not even an option. I don't even get the [Missing] Firewire NTSC 720 x 480 option. It's just not there. I have all the AJA options, but not the FIrewire ones. Anyone seen this disappear like that?
    Tried:
    Resetting PRAM several times
    Trashing prefs (all of 'em)
    Disconnecting all cables and reconnecting
Checked all of the settings on the deck several times
    Changed Firewire cable twice
WOndering if this is an AJA conflict, but it works now in the other edit suite, which is a clone of this one. Weird and frustrating.
Haven't tried setting up a new user yet, gonna try that now. If you have a clue, please clue me in…

All the settings were exactly the same. I changed nothing. It was a weird experience, but on a whim I decided to simply swap the decks in the rooms, wondering if there was some corrupt communication from the decks via the Firewire. Seems that was the case, because once I switched rooms, everything worked. Glad it worked out, because I was about to send the decks in for repair, having tested the ports, the Firewire cables, and FCP, and all came out working fine. Can't explain it, but it works.
    Thanks.

  • Weird questions...who makes a reliable firewire cable?

The firewire cable that came with my MacAlly external HD is a piece of garbage. It fits very loosely in the MBP and connectivity is hit or miss. I had to switch which end of the cable goes into the computer just to get my computer to recognize the external HD.
Can anyone recommend a firewire cable brand that has good SOLID connectors? Braided metal cable is preferrable because it looks cool.
    Thanks,

  • Connecting a MacBook to  PowerMac G5 with a firewire cable

I have a 13" MacBook. I want to transfer files from my PowerMac G5 running OS X 10.4.11 to it. I can hook an external drive to the MacBook via firewire and it recognizes it. I can hook up the PowerMac and the MacBook via firewire, start the MacBook with the T key depressed and see the hard drive on my PowerMac. But... I can't do the reverse. I can start up the MacBook with the T key depressed and see the G5's hard drive on it.
    Any suggestions?

Are you using the same cable to connect the machines?
Some folks suggest to shut both machines down, then connect the Firewire cable. Boot the Power Mac into Target Disc mode. Once you see the FireWire symbol on the PowerMac's screen, try booting the MacBook.
Once the MacBook has started & you're logged in, check for the hard drive in Finder. If it doesn't appear, open System Profiler (Applications>Utilities), and click Firewire in the left-hand column. Are any devices showing here?

  • How to transfer from one mini to another without messing up either one. I have one monitor and two minis. I do have a firewire cable but don't want a complete transfer, just specific files.

I have done a complete fire wire transfer before but I don't want to do that. I only want to transfer certain files and leave the existing and new minis in tact otherwise. I am sure I can transfer just files. My question mostly is: I only have one monitor but will have two minis that are hooked up. Can this be done without seeing the other computer contents? I hope that makes sense. The existing mini is 10.5.8 and the new one is 10.6.

You can start one mac up in target disk mode, get file sharing set up and then disconnect the monitor.  Monitor ports are very tolerant of connecting and disconnecting with the computer on.
Switch the monitor to the other computer.  Start up, connect the firewire cable (after the computer has booted) and set up file sharing on that computer.  You can see the other computer's contents without controlling the other computer's mouse and/or keyboard.
If the other computer's hard drive does not automatically show up, go to network settings and verify those settings as well.  That should not be necessary but ethernet would give you a second option for file transfers.

  • I have a MacBook Pro Mid 2012. I have a sony DCR-PC350E . How do i transfer the video to the laptop ? I have firewire cable. But not able to find the firewire port in the video camera.

    Need help.

The DCR-350e is a miniDV camcorder.  It has a FireWire port, but it's not on the camera itself, it's on the cradle (aka "Handycam Station") that should have come with your camcorder.   You need to insert the camera into the cradle in order to capture video via FireWire.
Here's a link to the Owners Manual.  See p. 142 for a diagram that shows the DV (iLink) port on the cradle.
You also need an appropriate cable to connect to your MacBook Pro. Check your MBP to see what port(s) it has:
Some 2012 MBPs have a FW800 port, in which case you need a 4-pin to 9-pin FW cable like this one.
Some 2012 MBPs only have a Thunderbolt port, in which case you need the Apple Thunderbolt-FireWire Adapter in addition to the FireWire cable.

  • Can anyone tell me where to find a firewire cable that fits snug in a macbook pro?

I have tried many different 9-pin firewire 800 cables. All work there way out of the port on my 2010 Macbook Pro. It's very frustrating because it can ruin the data. Sometimes the repair doesn't work. Most of the time the drive goes offline. The best cable I've found is the firewire cable that came with my Western Digital Passport Studio drive. The cable has metal connectors. It seems to help keep the cable in the port better than any other I've found.
It's a shame that a firewire lock cable can't be designed for these computers to prevent this problem. Besides tape or glue, does anyone have a suggestion? Perhaps a better cable? The firewire cable that came with my Seagate free agent drive is also quite good. But that cable is proprietary to the drive.
    Thank you for your help!
    Paul

No one here knows what you have tried in the past.
The suggested solution was a possibility. One that some folks wouldn't think about. You have already ruled out a new cable as a solution 8 times.
My mixture of 9 pin FW cables are all snug to the fit - all appear to be different vendors.
My apologies for having made a 'foolish' suggestion.

  • Ipod with firewire cable

My son was given an older, 1st gen, I think, Ipod that seems to only work with firewire cable. Is there a way to charge this directly on a laptop with USB portsw only? Will a newer cable with USB work on the Ipod (so far using my cabling it doesn't seem to).
I wanted to try to buy a Firewire wall charger (the one he got seems not to be working very well), but I couldn't find any on the Apple website.

If it's a 1st or 2nd gen iPod, it does not have a dock connector; it has a FireWire port (like an external hard drive). So the FireWire cable used with it would have a FireWire connector at both ends.
Will a newer cable with USB work on the Ipod (so far using my cabling it doesn't seem to).
If you are able to try using your USB docking cable, the iPod is probably a 3rd gen. Does it have a touch wheel and four round touch button in a line between the wheel and display? It was the first iPod with the standard dock connector, but unfortunately, the 3rd gen iPod was designed to work with FireWire, so it will not charge over USB.
Apple does not sell the FireWire power adapter these days, but you can find them on eBay. Make sure it is the FireWire type.
If you want to use USB 2.0 to connect and sync the 3rd gen iPod, and you are able to get a FireWire power adapter, you can get this special cable that Apple still sells.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9688G/A
It has both a FireWire connector and a USB connector. You connect the USB connector to your laptop USB port. At the same time, you connect the FireWire connector to the FireWire power adapter to supply power for charging.

I recently moved and had to disconnect my WD My Pro Edition II 2TB external drive I had been using for backup.
Its been several months (many upgrades to the iMac software during this time), and now when I try to reconnect the external dire (Use a firewire cable) it does not recognize the drive is there.  I also tried "reloading" software from the Western Digital site, but after following all the instructions, it looks like my iMac doesn't support this software (I can't even locate it after I follow all the instructions.
Thnaks,  for anyones ideas on how I can get this working again.....

First of all, you do not really want to use their software; if you want a bootable clone, use either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper. If you simply want to drag and drop some files, you don't need software to do that. The important thing on any external drive is that you format/partition it correctly (Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and using GUID partition scheme).
Unfortunately, I don't know anything about WD drives or their software, so I don't have any idea what kind of backup you did. Having said that, it should still recognize the external even if it's outdated. Have you tried mounting it manually in Disk Utility? If you can get it to mount, you could (worst case scenario) just drag your stuff off onto your internal and then reformat the external.

I have a Power Mac G4 (2004) and want to transfer all my files to a new MacBook Pro 15.4". Can this be done thru firewire cable or do I have to transfer to an external Firewire 800 hard drive first?

Do it with a Firewire cable (buy a 800/400 adapter if you need it) - the USB transfer takes a much longer time.
Start up your old PowerMac G4 holding down the "T" key, for target disk mode.
On your new MacBook Pro open "Migration Assistant" in your utilities folder.
Connect the 2 computers by firewire cable and follow the prompts in Migration Assistant.

    Hello,
You need to put the Tiger Install Disc in the 2011 iMac, boot the 2011 uMac into Target mode...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1661
Boot the G4 holding the Option or alt key, hopefully the Install Disc in the 2011 iMac will show as a boot choice.
We just want to use the 2011 iMac as a big expensive FW Optical drive, it cannot be installed osing the 2011 iMac itself.
