Missing Free Space After Cleaning Up

I connected my new iMac Intel to my old iMac G3 (still running OS X 10.2.8) via FireWire to transfer some of my files. Well, I deleted my Music folder (that had around 10gig) from the G3 through the iMac Intel.... well, I'm not sure if I'm being clear.... what I'm trying to say is that I was using the G3 as an external driver for the iMac Intel, when I dragged the G3 music folder to the Intel's Trash...
Anyway, after I turned the G3 on again, the music folder was naturally gone, but my available space in the hard disk was still the same as before...
I used the WhatSize software and it said in the total that 30 Gb were being used.... but I manually added all the folders sizes it shows me and the amount is 20Gig.
Where has my 10gig gone?!

When I deleted the folder from the G3 it went to the Intel trash, that was later emptied.... but the G3 says i'm still using that space...

  • RoboHelp 7 - Intermittently missing the space after bolded text in

We've converted a project of 800+ topics to RoboHelp 7 and
updated our software with the new latest patch 7.01.001. The funky
character issues have gone away but now, we noticed that we're
intermittently missing the space after bolded words. I've check the
HTML code and it is the coding is the same for all of the bolded
words within a topic, yet one word will be missing space and all of
    the other bolded words won't.
This applies to topics that were created in RH7 before the
patch as well topics that were coverted from RH5 to RH6 and then to
RH7. Also, applies to topics to were originally imported into RH5
    or RH6 from Word.
The formatting looks like this: "It does <span
style="font-weight: bold;">not</span> post in PARA or DBS.
Sometimes, I see the end code is
    </span><span></span> --or -- </span>
    <spaces>
    I've also seen <b> word </b>
Problem is that it is inconsistent and we have over 800
topics within our project. To check each topic in the generated
version and then go back to Edit will take forever.

  • Lion takes long time to find free space after emptying trash

After emptying the trash, I've noticed that Lion does not see the additional free space until after doing a reboot, and even after that it takes a long time for it to find all the new free space.  Anybody know what's wrong with the trash system?

Absolutely nothing is wrong with it.  See Missing disk space in Lion.

  • IPhone Free Space after iOS7 installation

After installing iOS7, I now have approximately 1 GB more free space than with iOS6.  Everything (apps, songs, photos, etc.) is still on my iPhone 4.  Does anyone know  if iOS7 is smaller than iOS6..............or did I just have a lot of "junk" on my device that is not needed by iOS7 ?
Thanks is advance for any feedback.

    Hi Diesel vdub
I tried all of the troubleshooting basics like factory reset and restore from backup and treat as new phone.
The phone is still crashing even with icloud off.
I called Apple support this morning, and kind of persisted on a downgrade for iphone4. After 45 minutes and repeating my issue over and over they said they cannot help me further, because downgrading is not possible after september 22, since my iphone4 is older than 2 years it's out of guarantee support.
I finally talked to the Apple commercial support center in Ireland, they admitted that they cannot help me from a technical point of view. At least one of the guys promised me to call back this afternoon on a possible solution which will probably a commercial one
Let's see how Apple solves this issue.
    Best regards

  • After 10.9.4 upgrade, can't recover free space after deleting files

After upgrading to 10.9.4, I decided to backup about 250 Go of films on an external drive, and then I deleted the originals ones on my MacBook Pro. The files disappear, but the free space stayed the same: more than 250 Go of free space couldn't be recovered !!
I generally use the program "Cocktail" to maintain the mac; but in that case, no solution.
I decided to look for the films on the disk, on temp folders and with Spotlight. And I found them ! In the folder: Volumes/HardiskName/.cleverfiles/hlink.ref/
I deleted them directly in the trash and ... I recovered my 250 Go of free space.

That folder is created by the third-party application "Disk Drill." If you don't like what it does, remove it according to the developer's instructions. "Cocktail" is worthless and should be removed in any case.

  • Finder doesn't show free space after trashing.

    Hi,
I would like to know Finder can show again free space ? I had a huge file that I putted in my trash. However after emptying the trash I didn't recover the disk space and I have still few free space... I wonder if there any solution to show that space again. So far I tried to shut down and restart, and also repair disk permission through disk utility. Unfortunately I have been unlucky till now.
    Thanks for the further hints.

    Hi G,
Try to boot in Single User Mode (hold CMD+S right after Power button) and follow instructions on screen for fsck and mount, redo the fsck and exit.
After that login and using you /Applications/Utilities/Terminal check folders size in general using du. Change work directory to the root (cd /) and use the command line "du -h -d1".
You will get some clue about, you can change the depth using -d2, -d3 and on. You can change the work directory using cd /Path/to/Folder and use the du -h -d1 (or other depth).
If you find the 100GB folder drop a line.
    Good luck.
Also you will like to use the "sudo du -h -d1 -x" as without sudo some directories are not included and without -x the task is interrupted traversing mounting points in /dev

  • Missing disk space after crash

In the middle of burning a backup to DVD, my machine crashed (old emac, OX X 10.3.x). Afterwards, it seems like about 30gig of disk space has disappeared (the disk went from 15G of 55G used to 52G used). Disk utility found nothing wrong, Norton Utilities found and fixed "major problems" and still there's all this space missing.
I expect that there's a huge temporary file hidden somewhere, but still that seems a lot of space.
    Any thoughts, suggestions?
    Thanks much.

    Welcome To  Discussions mfidelman!
What were you backing up, and what method were you using?
"...the disk went from 15G of 55G used to 52G used)."
Considering the small amount of free space presently available, I think it could be extremely risky, to download anything at this point.
Insufficient available space, can cause performance issues, system corruption, and possible loss of data.
Depending on Mac system usage habits, it is a general recommendation, to keep 10% to as much as 20%, of the Total capacity, available at all times.
    Try the procedure below first.
INSTRUCTIONS TO RUN CRON MANUAL COMMANDS
    Quit all applications/programs.
Navigate to HD > Applications > Utilities.
Double click on Terminal, to open.
    At the prompt, type:
    sudo periodic daily
    Press Return.
Enter your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
This will execute the daily script that is sheduled to run every night.
When completed, repeat this procedure, but change the command to:
    sudo periodic weekly
This one rebuilds a database or two, and usually takes somewhat longer to complete. It is scheduled to run once a week.
    Repeat again, with command:
    sudo periodic monthly
Or they can all be run in one pass, which is preferable, with this command:
    sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
When the tasks complete, and return to the prompt, you may quit Terminal.
Restart the Mac, and run Repair Permissions.
TO REPAIR PERMISSIONS ON THE STARTUP DISK
1.Open Disk Utility, located in Applications/Utilities, and select the startup disk in the left column.
    2.Click First Aid.
3.Click Verify Disk Permissions to test permissions or Repair Disk Permissions to test and repair permissions. (I never "Verify". Just run "Repair".)
Rerun RP, until the only messages reported, are listed here Spurious Permissions Errors Using: 10.3.x, authored by Michael Conniff.
When "Repair Permissions" is complete. Quit "Disk Utility".

  • Not enough "free space" after backup to restore iPhone5s.

Cannot restore iphone 5s after backing up...it says that there's not enough free space in itunes. Help please.

Sounds like you just need to clear some stuff off of your computer.
Go to your start menu then "control panel" then click "add/remove programs" and go through that list and remove any programs you dont need/use.
Then if you have tons of video/music/files of any sort that you dont need, delete those.
Check everywhere, i recently found 2gb of video clips that i thought i had deleted.
Try that and maybe itll help

  • Missing HD space after install

Today I did archive install on my Imac to see if would fix a problem which it has, but now I'm missing space. I started with 118.78GB and now after the install and updates i have 115.68GB. Does anyone know what could account for the missing harddrive space. I have deleted the old previous system folder already and the updates I download I had on the previous system
    Fox

Yea, i did trash the old sys...so i'm not sure what is going on but oh well not like I lost a lot of space its only 3gb being used for something which could have been stuff i previously deleted so I'm not overly worried.

  • More free space after iOS 5 upgrade!.

I actually have 2.5 Gb more free space on my 32Gb iPhone 4 after the iOS5 upgrade.  Is this possible?

I am also lost.  I upgraded itunes and ios5 on my iPhone4.  Now I have a gray slate screen on my IP4 that just says iPhone, and I am being asked to configure my device.  I cannot receive phone calls.  They go directly to voice mail, and I cannot make phone calls.  I have tried "everything".  Even with it "looking like" a backup/restore may be in process, it does not backup or restore.  I have no device, no music, no contacts, no pictures.  Can anyone help? Please....

  • Lost free space after an "Erase Free Space" procedure

I just ran the "Erase Free Space" application from the Dick Utility. The erase failed and now I have ZERO free space available. I am now showing that all 111g or used oposed to roughly 50% prior to the Erase Free Space. I have found a few articles trying to explain what to do but, I have been unable to locate the empty temp files that we created during the Erase Free Space, so I have been told. Can anyone help me resolve this solution and restore my free space?
    Thank you,
    Shannon

WhatSize should be able to find the temporary files
    <http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize/>
You could try the Erase Free Space from Disk Utility on the install DVD. It might delete the files when it finishes.

  • Missing disk space after inserting a USB flash drive

    Hello everyone..
I had a little problem with my Aluminum Macbook recently
It started on last sunday, when i pluged in a USB flash drive into my macbook, all of sudden my Macintosh disk free space is gone, from about 50gb left to about 1.5gb...
I ran the disk utility check and repair it fixed the problem, but then again whenever i plug in any usb flash drive(i tried several), it "steals" my free disk space and i have to run th repair programme again..
Any idea of this problem? is it any kind of virus or something else?
    thanks

    Hi,
*"a restart message."* If it looks like this...
That is called a kernel panic. Sounds like the USB card software/hardware is incompatible with your Mac.

  • Can't get free space after deleting a file-sparse bundle disk image

I have a 150 GB Sparse bundle Disk image with a 256 AES enc. I just deleted about 30 GB worth of tv shows to free up some space but the Disk Image is still the same size with no more free space on the virtual disk either. I know that with Filevault the user has to log out in order to recover free disk space but how does this work with a normal Sparse disk image? Thanks in advance!
    -Macguy3000

IIRC, sparse images only grow as things are added, but do not shrink. Create a new one, mount the original, transfer your stuff from the original into the new one, and delete the original one.

  • Help, losing hard drive free space after removing A3

This one has me scratching my head.
I've been through all the insanity of trying to get A3 up and running and have decided to give up until Apple gets their act together.
So I restored my startup drive from a SuperDuper back-up (pre A3) that does have A2 on it. All my A2 libraries, vaults and original RAWS reside on separate drives. Normally this leaves me with 390 +/_ GB of free space on my startup drive. However over the past 2 days since restoring to my pre A3 state I've noticed background drive activity (Activity Monitor shows kernel_task/root making consistent writes to the drive) and my free space has been gradually declining to where it is now shown at 328 GB.
I did a fresh install of OS10.6.2 and have run directory rebuilds, repaired permissions and Spotlight turned off.
It's almost as if A3 were still trying to do it's drive eating thing (technical term).
Can anyone enlighten me about what may be happening?
    Thanks!
    Bob

This happened to me as well.
TechTool actually crashed a hard drive big time by filling it to the brim with daily backup files.
It is supposed to keep only the 5 most current and delete them oldest first.
I disabled the backup function (TechTool Protection) which is found in the OS X System Prefs.

  • Missing HD space after installing Leopard

I have a used 17" iMac with a 160gb HD.I just installed Leopard about a week ago and backed up all my files and programs, but didn't delete anything. Before I installed Leopard I was able to hold 60+GB of music along with all my other files with spare room. I then installed Leopard, put everything back on, and accidentally copied some files multiple times and and my Hard Drive was full. I deleted all the extra files but now only have 5.09 GB free space while only being able to hold less than half my music, fewer Applications and fewer files. I've emptied my trash and used Whatsize and the numbers still don't add up. Any ideas?

How did you do the upgrade? If you used +Archive and Install+ option with the Mac OS X Installer, your old system is retained and put into a folder called +Previous Systems+ (at the root level), so that may account for the loss of space.
A typical Leopard installation can take up about 3 more GBs of space than a typical Tiger installation. How much space do you feel is not accounted for?
