Missing Hardware Test Disc

I have an iMac, Late 2006 Intel Core Duo. I need to run the Apple Hardware Test from the CD, but magically, it seems to have grown legs and is separated from the other discs which were in the original box.
I have a different disc, called the Apple Protection Plan with some tech tools application on it.
Is there anyone familiar enough to know if this is what I should be using? I walked and talked with the Apple experts at an Apple Store and they said I should have the apple hardware disc and to boot that up holding down the D key. But I don't have a specific disc "Apple Hardware Test" disc in my arsenal of Mac discs. If someone could clarify that for me or knows a link where I can download and burn a new test disc, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks in advance.
D

Insert the first Mac OS X Install Disk, and then press the D key. Intel Macs don't use a standalone disk for it.

  • Lost hardware test disc

    hello all,
does anyone know if you can get the hardware test disc from apple? I've lost mine and my mac pro is in need of it.
    thanks much.

    Hi J;
Call Applecare for a nominal charge they will replace it. They will probably ask you for the part number and serial number this is to ensure they send you the correct one because they are hardware specific.

  • Eject disc from menu bar & Hardware Test Disc Questions??

After upgrade to 10.4.5 on my G5 2.5 DP, I notice the little underscored triangle thing is gone from the menu bar.
Any way to get it back? Kinda handy for open & closing the disc drive and ejecting discs. The other ways I know and use, but sorta fond of doing from menu bar.
Also, notice there's no Hardware test disc with Tiger. Where'd that go? O.k. to run the one from 10.3?
Additionally, what happens if you run it without pulling out all 3rd party PCI cards?
    Thanks, p2

"Any way to get it back?"
    Double Click on: /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/Eject.menu
    "Where'd that go?"
It's not on retail copies of OS X. Use the one that came with your computer.
"what happens if you run it without pulling out all 3rd party PCI cards?"
    Nothing should happen.

  • Hardware test Disc

Where can I get a Hardware Test Disc for my Powermac G5 I bought it used and don't have the original disc. Thanks Jim

Check on eBay, I am not sure if this is for your PowerMac but take a look http://www.ebay.com/itm/Power-Mac-G5-Install-and-Restore-disc-set-OSX-10-3-2-SEA LED-/180733311479?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a148b79f7#ht_198wt_47

  • Quad G5 owners..... Hardware test disc version?

I need to know the version of Apple's Hardware Test software for the Quad G5. Looking to pick up the correct discs for my Quad..... bought it refurbished without discs.... bought G5 discs off of ebay..... oops, wrong version, my bad.
The disc I have has version 2.5, and after trying it out does not work with the Quad. (I know I can call Apple, but this is/might be quicker)
    Thanks!

Not sure about AHT but the correct version for ASD (apple service diagnostics) is 2.6.3 for the PPC-970MP (dual core G5 processor) macs. As far as I know AHT and ASD version numbers mirror each other.

  • Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test

I was referred to this disk by repair disk page in disk one.
Please provide instructions for using it. All searches result in a runaround.

In order to use the hardware test boot into the startup manager to select the hardware test. If you are indeed running an iMac G5, and not an Intel Mac:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86287
If you are running an Intel Mac follow these directions:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303081
If your desire is to restore the additional applications that came with your computer, follow these directions:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61802
Those are the two most common uses of the Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test disc.
If you are missing the Mac OS X install disc which came with your machine (in addition to the Additional Software & Apple Hardware Test), contact the seller if you bought it used, or if the seller is no where to be found, call AppleCare to ask for a replacement disc:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
The seller must give you the disc as it is licensed for use only with that machine. If they can't find it, they should call AppleCare and get it for you.

  • Can you torrent the Apple Hardware test?

I'm having frequent Kernel Panics and I need to check the hardware in my system. I don't remember if my system ever came with an Apple Hardware test disc. Do you think Apple would frown on torrenting an ISO of the Hardware test? If not, is there anybody who could share?
I couldn't find a way to download it off apple.com. You would think they would provide it for registered mac owners. Who else would ever need it?
This is for an Intel Mac Pro. I guess they are unique to every system.

    they most certainly would.

the hardware test is available on the original install disk that came with your computer. there is no separate disk for it. instert install disk 1 reboot and hold "d" at the chime. this will boot you into the hardware test.

  • Hardware Test Problem

I can't use my wired keyboard or mouse when booted from the Apple Hardware Test disc. Cursor remains frozen in the upper lefthand corner, and when I turn the optical mouse over there is no red light as usual. I then have to shut off the computer by the button on the back. This has only happened since my computer started refusing to sleep the hard disc a few months ago.

Yep, no problem running disk utility. Ran it this morning and it repaired a problem in the directory, ran it several more times and everything was ok. Repaired permissions too. I've only had the mouse problem when trying to run hardware test.

  • Need to run a hardware test on MBP4,1, 17" OS 10.5.8 w/out disc?

I have a macbook pro with the following specs:
    - 17inch macbook pro 4,1, 2. 5 GHz
    - non-unibody (released sometime in 2008)
    - OS 10.5.8
My battery recently expanded and 'exploded', so i bought a new one (from macsales.com) and replaced it. battery works fine.
    I also upgraded my RAM: from 2GB to 6GB (1 x 2GB, 1 x 4GB).
    I have two issues now:
    1) I have a birdlike chirping sound that occurs randomly and not often. I had similar sounds prior to my battery expanding and going bust. However, now that I've bought a new battery, I have a concern that it might be something else in the hardware.
    2) I would like to upgrade my OS to mavericks; but first, I understand that i have to upgrade to Snow Leopard (10.6) before upgrading to anything.
I would like to know the following:
    a) I would like to run a hardware test to diagnose it and find out what the sounds are from and also a general check up before i actually upgrade OS.
However, I don't have my installation discs because I moved country and it was a long time ago.
How can i run a hardware test and check my laptop without a disc?
    b) since i'm not in the US, how can i buy the Snow Leopard? is there an option for buying when outside of the US? I can't seem to find it.
    thanx for your help

  • G4 that will not boot from any disc EXCEPT the Apple Hardware Test CD

We have a DP 1ghz Quicksilver PowerMac G4 that will not boot from any disc EXCEPT the Apple Hardware Test CD that came with the machine.
We were in the process of installing 10.4 Tiger before placing it for sale.
The Mac was originally OSX Server 10.1 that we later converted to a worksation running 10.3 Panther.
It has 1 GB of memory, 80GB hardrive, 250MB Zip Drive and a Radeon 7500 video card.
Since this machine only has a CD-R drive and not a DVD-R, we installed Tiger using another Mac via Target Disk Mode. The installation process went well, but when I tried to reboot I got a Kernel Panic right after startup screen with the grey Apple logo.
On some reboots we get to the blue startup screen, others it stops at the grey Apple logo, others a black box like the a Kernel Panic - but with no text. Twice it went directly into Open Firmware.
We have done the following during our troubleshooting:
    - Reseat RAM, Video Card, Hard Drive, Zip & CD-R connections
    - Remove RAM 1 stick at a time and reboot
    - Replace RAM with RAM from another working Quicksilver
    - Replace Video Card with one from another working Quicksilver
    - Zap PRAM
    - Reset CUDA switch
    - Unplug the MAC and remove everything (RAM, Battery, etc) for 30 minutes and try to reboot
    - Tried booting from the Macintosh Server G4 Software Restore CD
    - Tried booting from Mac OS X Server CD
    - Tried booting from AppleCare Protection Plan CD with TechTool
    - Tried booting from Diskwarrior CD
    - Tried booting from an external FireWire drive with a disk image of Tiger OS Install
    - Tried booting with the hard drive disconnected
The Mac WILL boot from the Apple Hardware Test CD and will pass ALL of the extended tests.

Conventional wisdom says that any Mac that will not boot up from a System/Install CD OS 9 or an Install CD Mac OS X, has a Hardware problem.
The diagnostic CD is a red herring because it uses a very primitive method of reading the CD, and so does not properly represent the machines general ability to read CDs.
I would look at the CD drive cables, etc, and see if another drive gives different results.
You have not mentioned using the Startup Manager (option key at Startup) to do any checking:

  • Won't boot from Apple Hardware Test or 10.1 Install disc

Disk utility states that I need to boot from a CD and then run Disk Utility to repair my disk. However, neither CD seems to be recognized as a viable startup disk from either holding down the C key or trying to select it as a startup disk in System Prefs.
FYI, I am running 10.6 and trying to boot from a 10.1 disc and an Apple HT disc with SW version 1.2

There is no way any Intel Mac will run with 10.1 -- it was released before there was any Intel support in the OS.
Every Mac model requires a specific version of the Apple Hardware Test to support its hardware. (If yours is the "Late 2008" black MacBook, the Mactracker database says it requires version 3A147.) Somewhere in the fine print of your original grey system disc set, or on any other grey system disc for any model, you will find the version of AHT it contains, if it contains any version. Unless that version is the same as your Mac requires, it won't work.

  • Hardware test using Disc 1

    Hi,
I am just wondering if running the hardware test using disc 1 will detect failure of one or both fans. Thank you for all response.

    Hi Michael,
Thank's for your reply. So if say one fan is dead and the other one is working fine, there will be an error message?

  • TS1394 Where can I find Disc 3 of Mac OS 10.3.5 OEM install discs for a copy of Hardware test?

I can't imagine I don't have this disk! I have all others that shipped with PowerMac, but cannot find Disk 3. Any suggestions? Thanks for all help.

  • Keychains, disc utility and hardware test

(this might well be moved to a new topic)
I had three certificates in an old keychain on my 11inch mid 2011 MBA, no idea what they were or what they were for but one had expired (it was dated 20 June 2012 - when I bought my machine - so had probably expired in a year), one was valid and one was not trusted. Maybe a bit of a silly question to ask given I don't know what they were for but would they have been critical to running my machine? (it's working fine right now so probably not)
What is the meaning of the following keychain items/what do they do:
    accounts.google.com
    Apple Persistent State Encryption
    Chrome Safe Storage

Do Disc Utility and/or Hardware Test ALWAYS show up anomalies in hardware/software, or is there more than meets the eye in some cases?
Any help and advice appreciated - thanks!

    tragicallyhip:
My previous response will check for software filesystem/directory errors on our HDD. In re-reading your post, you may have a hardware issue. If you are able, boot from the Apple Hardware Test disk that came with your computer, and run the extended tests in a loop by holding down Ctrl + L during the tests. Let it run for a while, several hours if necessary.

  • Hardware Test Key Combo? Mountain Lion & Snow Leopard Disc 1

Hi. I have an iMac i7 late 2009 with a fresh/clean install of Mountain Lion. I'd like to check it's hardware. What's the keyboard combo for both Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and Snow Leopard disc 1 (just in case Mountain Lion doesn't have it built-in) and when is the correct timing to press the combo? Should I shut-down (how long before I press ON) or restart?
    Thank you in advance.
    God bless.

Unless your Mac has built-in hardware test, you have to use the Original disk that came with the Mac (Snow Leopard Disk 1).
Put the disk in and restart. When you hear the startup tone, hold down the D key.
