Missing help contents - really need to reinstall?

Hi there,
from one day to the next I got problems with the Mac help viewer: when started I
- get an empty window
- "home" button takes you to the "home"page (the one with the iChat video conference ad picture) but no links work
- entering some search string either has no effect or sometimes yields a very small number of entries without apparent relation to the search string where the corresponding links do not work but take you back to the help "home"page
I followed the instructions as specified in post http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1724496&#1724496
which points to http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/helpviewer.html and which definitely is a very interesting and great resource.
I am at the stage where a review of the console log is suggested just prior to reinstalling help with Pacifist and before I go down that road I was wondering whether anybody might make anything out of the error message in the console log: Starting help viewer shows a number of messages. The last two messages incl the error read

Well, except for recognizing that something is wrong here, the question really is - what is wrong? And may I fix it without reinstalling the help files/system?
If the only recommendation is to reinstall the help files - my DVDs are for 10.4.2, but I have upgraded in the meantime to 10.4.5: So, where do I get the latest helpfiles?

You don't really upgrade the helpfiles like you upgrade your Apple software through the Software Update, Help Viewer automatically connects to Apple Support and fetches any updated info...

    Are you launching Pages from an icon in your Dock? Installing the update does not change the Dock icons & it does not remove the older versions. Go to your Applications folder & launch the new Pages from there.

  • I received a gift card and when I redeemed it an error message said that I had some itunes files missing and that I needed to reinstall itunes.  Will I still have all my credits when I download itunes?

    I received an online gift card for Father's Day.  When I tried to redeem the gift then I received a error message saying I had some itune files missing and I needed to reinstall/download itunes.  Will I still have my previous purchase credits after downloading and reistalling itunes? 

    You will, because the credited funds are on your iTunes account, not the application. When you reinstall iTunes just configure it with your old iTunes account and your credits will be there waiting for you.

    HELP! Years ago - SEVEN to be exact- I PURCHASED Adobe CS2 and used it extensively. Then I was in an accident that took five years to recover from. After my recovery I tried to get back to using my Adobe products only to find that Adobe was discouraging use of CS2 and since I OWN a LICENSE and that was the LAST version I used I wanted to begin again with a version I am familiar with. Many months later, apparently I wasn't the only one who wanted to KEEP USING CS2 and now Adobe has made it possible to download this version for PC and MAC, BUT due to OS compatibility issues Adobe continues to discourage downloading and use. HERE'S THE THING: I have the SAME SYSTEM running the SAME OS as when I first PURCHASED IT. I have downloaded the EXACT SAME VERSION of CS2. It installs fine. But I cannot OPEN the application and the troubleshooter reports there are "COMPATIBILITY ISSUES". WHY?!?!?!?!?
    I'm on a PC running Windows 2000 XP. I OWN a LICENSE for Adobe CS2 and it used to run on this very same machine. I had to re-format my system two years ago so it has much more free space but when I  try to OPEN the application it won't run.     Yes, I have. My system was completely cleaned of everything and I'm just now RE-INSTALLING CS2 for Windows2000 XP from the Adobe site that gives you versions to select for your OS. I have successfully downloaded disks 1,2 and 3 and I can INSTALL disks 1 and 2, but it FAILS at disk 3. I REALLY need to resolve this today because I need to submit some work by tomorrow and the troubleshooting isn't helping!
    Can you advise anything else . . . anyone? Thank you!

    Go to a suitable download page eg: [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html]
    Download firefox, use the save option rather than install.
    Save it directly to the flash drive, or to somewhere on your computer and copy/move it the flash drive.
    However if IE is not working possibly you have some sort of setup problem so firefox may not work either.

  • Ibook G4 freezes either when its on the grey loading screen or the blue screen. Sometimes I get it to my desktop but it always freezes in like a minute. Someone help I really need this computer!

         I have tried everything online and my iBook g4 wont stop freezing. Safe Mode doesnt even help, it still gets stuck on the blue screen! It either gets stuck on the grey loading screen or the blue screen. Rarely I am able to boot past everything and get to my desktop but after about 30 seconds it freezes again. This laptop was passed down to me and I have no original papers or disks that came with this laptop. I am really trying to figure this out without buying a disk because if it doesnt work I wont be out $60. Someone help I have tried putting it in safe mode single mode holding c down during start up! I need more options..  Please this is the only computer I have right now! (PS: I know warranty has expired a long long time ago)

    Without the disk you are limited on options. It could be an issue with the hard drive and would required the disk to run disk utility.

  • Do I really need to reinstall Windows partition when upgrading to Leopard?

    I've installed Leopard and installed the Leopard drivers in Windows. Now Startup Disk control panel does not show the Windows boot option. I can use it by holding down the Option key at boot time or by running BootChamp. Windows works fine.
    I ran the Boot Camp Assistant and it says "This disk appears to have been partitioned by another utility, It must be erased before installing Windows" I used BCA to set the drive up (under beta of course.)
    Any clue how to get back the startup disk option without reinstalling Windows? Should I really care about it?

    All I did was do an archive/install of Leopard which went very smoothly. I then booted into my existing boot camp partition which was the boot camp beta/Vista Ultimate, stuck in my Leopard DVD and allowed it to upgrade the drivers. Everything went as smooth as silk, no problems. I can pick the windows partition as the startup disk or my Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard as the startup drive.
    Of course I had everything backed up first just in case, but it went without a hitch. So I know it is possible to accomplish without having to reinstall windows.

    I deleted an older version of QT and installed a newer version. Now Itunes won't open and it tells me it can't find QT and "reinstall" new version of Itunes. If I do this, where will all my music in my library go? Do I uninstall the version of Itunes I have on my computer? I have 1500 songs and don't want to lose them! Would appreciate any help!!! thanks

    okay. it sounds like the upgrade of your QuickTime didn't go through properly.
    let's try swapping it out, taking a few additional explicit precautions with the uninstall/reinstall..
    first, head into your Add/Remove programs and uninstall QuickTime.
    Next, we’ll manually remove leftover program files and folders.
    1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
    2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
    3. Open Program Files.
    4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
    5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
    6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx.
    7. Restart your computer.
    Now, download and save a copy of the QT 7.1.6 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
    Quicktime 7.1.6 Installers … get the one that doesn’t mention itunes
    if that install goes through okay, does your itunes launch properly again?
    (if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.)

  • Please help, I really need this

    Recently my battery ran out on my 3gs and the screen went yellow! i kept it charged in but the screen remained black. When I plugged it into my computer it said iPhone is in recovery mode? so I clicked on the restore button, it downloaded iOS4.3.5 and when it was installing it just stops at 'Preparing iPhone for Restore' and it just sits there for a long time (My iPhone screen remained black this whole time). Then after about 5 minutes a dialogue will pop up saying 'The iPhone "iPhone" could not be restored. An Unkown error occured (1601) please help! My warranty ran out on my 3GS!I completely uninstalled iTunes and Mobile Device Support and it still won't work! My iPhone won't even come on when it's trying to update!

    The last site that i had that my phone was on is when i was trying to restore it. A yellow screen popped up and then it slowly faded to black. At first it was just a yellow screen then it was fading to black with black verticle lines that slowly took over the whole screen making the screen black.

  • Help! I need to reinstall quicktime-

    I ran into trouble after I downloaded Perian and Divx, hoping to view and (eventually) save avi files from my rca small wonder camera as quicktime files. At first it worked, but very quickly quicktime began to crash when I would try to open one of these files - and the next day it began to crash whenever I tried to open any files at all. These included standard .mov files. So I got desperate and thought I'd better get rid of Perian and Divx for mac, which I did. Quicktime still crashed. So then, just now, I decided to uninstall and then reinstall Quicktime. I did what I had done with Perian - searched for "quicktime" and trashed everything I found. This was a mistake! because, when I downloaded Quicktime 7.5 from the Apple site, it's just an updater, and there is nothing to update. How do I get the full program back?!!

    BTW, what are people doing about mov files opening extremely slowly, dropping frames, and so on? That's why I installed Perian in the first place (and also to view avi files). But I don't want to mess up Quicktime again - so how can I fix these problems. Apologies for spamming my own thread - and thanks for the advice.
