Missing ICC profile - Bug or design?

Illustrator CC -  .AI file "This document does not have an embedded CMYK profile"....
I expected to see this in a 1998 version, perhaps in 2004, but now? In 2014? I'm astounded - is this a bug or by design?
Colour settings are configured for the suite:  Fogra39 / sRGB with all the preserve embedded / ask options checked.
Nick.

I beg to disagree; as a photographer I had to learn how the system worked. I started using the ColorSync system back in 1995 when it was first created. I then  took this further and worked with a lot of major organisations (Canon / Reuters / Getty / Apple) to explain this to others.
The system is fool-proof, and  with a very small amount of learning, accurate colour is maintained from capture to reproduction.
Forgive me for the next bit: designers have in the past had the luxury of systems like Pantone to work with and everyone used a Pantone swatch to check the colour from computer to print. Like printers, very few designers (I have worked with hundreds) needed to use the ICC system, and no-one calibrated screens (few still do). Once digital photographs were introduced to the system, the problems began. Illustrator has followed this lead and has been patchy in 'proper' support of icc profiles. The failure to embed a profile in a file now, so many years down the line though is not forgivable - unless it is a bug.

  • Missing ICC Profile

Where do I locate missing ICC profile?  Printer will not print photo without it.

You simply reinstall your printer driver. Other than that that could be permissions issues where the profile is not accessible. Still, most printers wil lhappily print without profiles, so I'm certain your printer will, too. you have some reading up to do on your printer settings and color management...

  • Missing *.icc profiles

    Hallo,
I've a question to  *.icc Profiles and Adobe Lightroom 3.5. I saved 10 *icc profiles for different types of printing (for example on acrylglas, different photo papers, on aluminium) wich I got from an online printing service. But if I want to select a specific profile for an jpeg export I just got a selection of 6 profiles; 4 profiles are not shown. Any idea why?
    With kind regards
    F. Oerters

    Thanks for Your reply.
I checked the directory - all correct. No profiles under "include" display profiles2
I took another look at the *.icc files - the four missing files are the biggest ones; all 1.830 kb. All other files's size is max. 1.449 kb. Maybe this is the reason that the files are not shown by LR 3.5; maybe they are just to big ?
When I take a look at the  "More like this" Section on this webside - Missing printing profiles seems to be an known problem in LR and PS ?
    Frank
    P.S. (one minute later...)
Searching the forum I found this for a similiar question:
"Those are probably cmyk profiles. Lightroom only supports RGB profiles."
I looked at the details of the *.icc profiles and really all the four missing profiles are uses the CYMK  Gamut.
    I think that's the reason.

  • Multiple monitor ICC profile bug

After considerable head scratching and testing I discovered that PS CS4 11.0.1 (Mac OSX 10.5.7) uses the colour profile of the primary monitor for the second monitor too. You may not notice this if your 2 monitors have similar profiles but you are still not getting the right results!
If you want to work on a second monitor then a workaround is to set the profile of that monitor as the profile for the first monitor too in the OS. That works, but I hope Adobe fixes this ASAP!

I spent several day to figure out why to second monitor looks totally over saturated with PS CS4 (looked fine with PS CS3) and yes indeed the solution was to turn OFF OpenGL in PS preferences. Still have the same problem with Acrobat 9 Pro.  When the document is dragged to other monitor the ICC profile of that monitor is not applied. Any idea how to get that working as I can't find the OpenGL setting in Acrobat . I have iMac24" and HP LP2475w as a secondary monitor which is wide gamut monitor which is far too over saturated without proper ICC. Any ideas?

  • Mogrify ICC Profile problem

I have been using Mogrify on export from LR, and I love it. Only one problem. On B&W conversions, when I open them in PS, I get an error box saying "The embedded ICC profile cannot be used because the ICC profile is invalid. Ignoring the profile." Clicking on OK, it will open, but it is Grayscale instead of RGB. I only have to click on Image>Mode>RGB to get it back to normal, but we do a LOT of B&W, and it would be nice not to have to do this every time.
I am on a PC, XP. I have tried directing Mogrify to all of the sRGB profiles I can find on my computer, using Mogrify format options>Convert to colorspace. No help. I have tried just clicking on the Grayscale button in LR, and also converting to B&W by using a preset that moves all the saturation sliders to -100 (I like the tones I get this way better). The same results on both. Interestingly, if I move only one slider to -99, I get a good export. No error message, and an RGB file.

    Hi Marty,
Did you ever find a solution to this problem. I, too, ran into this and it drove me nuts since Photoshop or my online photo site could not display the images. Photoshop complained of a missing ICC profile. After experimenting, I found that setting the Lightroom/Mogrify plugin to No Sharpening did the trick. Also, when using Basic Sharpening, any sharpening value below .2 had this problem. Once I bumped it up beyond that, the images magically started working again and Photoshop was happy with them. I have no explanation and couldn't find one in web searches. But, once I found a solution that did work, I stuck with it.
I would still be interested in knowing if I did something wrong or if its just a bug in Mogrify.

  • Missing most of printer icc profiles in cs5

I installed cs5. I have been using many printer profiles in the past. CS5 shows only few, up to Hartman icc paper profiles for my rpinter , but all others are not show in the pull down list. Even if they are in the ...win32/spool/driver/color directory as they have been before...Any suggestions?

I had all these profiles show in my previous photoshop releases and I used them for printing. After I installed CS4, they had a bug with
profiles - I think they messed up permissions in the color folder where icc profiles live. After I upgraded to CS5 , I noticed that some of my profiles are shown in the pull down menu and meny others are not. I had custom proofs set up - and that still works , even for
profiles that are not actually shown in the pull down menu! But, I can't select them for further proofing or printing - which
is very upsetting. Adobe's customer support line has one hour wait. which is really unacceptable - for the money they charge
for their products they need to communicate via e-mail or have faster responses.

  • ICC profiles missing in Print dialogue

Couldnt find anything on this matter. Ill keep it simpe:
Seems the print dialouge in PS CS6 isnt calling on the colorsync folder for ICC profiles.
However, soft proofing does call on these profiles. Any thoughts why I am not able to use ICC profiles in print mode?
    Reference attached images.
    Profiles loaded:
    Profiled Not Loaded:

    Chris,
Thanks for the input. In CS5, my soft proofing settings would typically
mirror my printer profiles. I would be able to load my profiles from the
print area in CS5 simply by placing them in the colorsync folder in my mac.
The files to be printed are an RGB file to be sent to an RGB printer (epson
9880). The issue is my paper profiles are not loading in the print dialoge.
Im curious to know if CS6 is calling on this folder or if the profiles need
    to be loaded somewhere else.

  • ICC profiles - never used what have I been missing?

Up until now I have never used separate icc profiles but have had to download all new drivers from epson to run my scanner and printer on new Intel Mac OSX 10.6. therefore it has given me the option to download the profiles.
Any advise for using them, can you turn them off - will i never want to turn them off?
    What do they do exactly?
I may sound daft to many but unless I ask I dont learn, many thanks in advance.

Good advice so far and it is good that you ask these questions.
You asked earlier about your Epson printouts matching a print shop. It helps to understand color management as a communication chain. In the case of images, this is an ideal workflow:
    1. Digital image is captured in RAW
    2. Photographer converts RAW data into an RGB image. The result is referred to as a source image. It should have an embedded RGB profile, for example Adobe RGB 1998. To see if it has an embedded profile, look at the document title in the window.  If you don't see # at the end, the image has a profile, which is good. If you do see #, you have a broken image, and it's up to you to get the derailed train back on track. If the image looks good to you (on a properly calibrated and profiled monitor) tagging an untagged image is an easy task. Edit: Assign Profile, and select your working RGB.
    3. The source image gets converted to the printer's CMYK color space, also represented by an ICC profile. This should be supplied by the printer. You do have the option of leaving the image RGB and letting Quark do the conversion when you output. Quark color management is somewhat more complicated to setup than InDesign CM, let me know if you have questions.
    4. To soft proof how the image will look on press, first calibrate and profile your monitor with the proper hardware and software. Then open the RGB image in Photoshop. View: Proof Setup: Custom, and select the CMYK profile supplied by the printer. The colors may shift some but that is to be expected, a CMYK color space is usually much smaller than most RGB color spaces.
    5. To proof an image on your Epson that will closely match the press, you can calibrate and profile your Epson (best) or use the canned factory profile corresponding to the paper loaded in the Epson. This profile is actually an RGB profile (the printer is not RGB but the profile that describes it is). Open the RGB image. In the print dialog under Color Management, choose "Proof." Color Handling, "Photoshop Manages Colors." Printer profile, select the Epson profile. Proof Setup, select the CMYK profile supplied by printer. Check "Simulate Paper Color"
When you print, print Photoshop will perform two conversions behind the scenes. First your RGB image goes to the CMYK color space. Then the CMYK image is converted to the Epson profile using an Absolute Colorimetric rendering intent.
Unfortunately I don't believe Quark has the ability to perform two conversions on output. So if you need to proof a Quark page it's a matter of conversion to the printer's CMYK when you export the PDF. Then you can print the CMYK PDF to your Epson from Acrobat, using Acrobat Color Management and selecting the appropriate Epson profile.

  • ICC profiles missing from the menu (InDesign 6.0.4.)

After the update to InDesign 6.0.4 icc profiles saved in Macintosh HD/Library/ColorSync/Profiles does not list in InDesign profiles menus. But they show up in Photoshop CS4. Why?
I've tried to reset the InDesign's preferences folder and fixed file permissions on the harddisk. Nothing helps.
This behaviour did not show up on other macs which also use InDesign 6.0.4.

Thank you very much for answering.
    Yes, advanced mode is on.
There are 42 objects in the profiles folder but I don't see any of those. However if I load a color setting that uses one of those, the correct profiles shows up in Working CMYK. (But I can't select it from the profiles menu.)

  • Icc profils missing

Hi all, I've just found out these wonderful Inkjet papers, I've copied the ICC profils given on their web site for Epson2200, Mac OS X in HD/library/colorsync/profils and my problem is that none of the profils copied show when I try to use them in Photoshop. I've run colorsync app and colorsynk doens't show the profils neither. What's wrong? The profiles can be found at http://www.hahnemuehle.com/site/us/1012/epson.html

  • Colour Profile Bug in CS4 32 bpc Mode?

This has been confirmed on both Mac and PC by different users
(this topic was confirmed on another list before posting here).
One may be working on an image that has a different colour profile
than set as default in colour settings. For example, colour settings
has Adobe RGB while the current document is in ProPhoto RGB. If the
ProPhoto RGB (16 bpc) file is taken to 32 bpc mode, the status message
reports that the file is in a modified linear space based on the input
profile. One may then perform USM, for example and then return to 16
    bpc or 8 bpc mode.
Here is the bug: Once the ProPhoto RGB file is returned to 16 or 8
bpc, it now has the working RGB space tagged of Adobe RGB, rather than
the original ProPhoto RGB as input before 32 bpc conversion. This is
not just a tagging issue, the numbers have been converted to working
RGB rather than the input ICC that was tagged to the image prior to
    entering 32 bpc mode.
ICC tagged image operations have been divorced from colour settings
since version 6, the document can reside in a space that is
independent of colour settings. I can't recall other operations that
change the files colour space and tag without user intention.
If using 32 bpc edits, to preserve the input space, one either has to
change their colour settings to match the document or convert the
    document to working RGB.
So why this reversion to working RGB and not the document RGB - bug or
design feature/limitation? Did CS3 work this way, is it only my
    version of CS4?
I have searched the help notes, this forum and other Adobe support docs,
however I could not find this issue documented.
    Sincerely,
    Stephen Marsh

Can anyone post a supporting argument for the current behaviour (design or bug). While in 32 bpc Photoshop "knows" what the original profile is (it is listed as being in a linear state), while on default conversion to lower bit depth the data is converted to working RGB, rather than the document RGB prior to conversion (if different to working RGB). Am I missing something - is this a good thing, should this be behaviour be changed?
    OK, topic drift it is!
Buko/progress, it is not so much bit depth in this case, it is gamma encoding - or lack thereof. 32 bpc mode processes in linear gamma, which can have an effect on some operations for certain receptive image content (tonal moves, USM, interpolation etc).
As one example, some links to linear resampling can be found in the comments at this blog:
    http://forensicphotoshop.blogspot.com/2008/11/resize-smaller-part-2.html
I prefer the 32 bpc route to linear processing rather than the alternative, which is 16 bpc and a hacked custom RGB profile set to gamma 1.0.
I don't like linear USM for output sharpening (nasty dark halo artifacts). However, for subtle capture/acquisition sharpening linear USM may be preferred for certain images. I generally sharpen with blend if sliders limiting the intensity of the light halo, which comes close to one aspect of linear sharpening (light halo reduction). This can also be achieved by blending the USM in two separate layers, set to darken and lighten blending with reduced opacity.
While on USM and gamma, there are some L* based RGB working spaces such as L*RGB or the new ECI RGB which behave the same way as Lab mode Lightness channel sharpening (when set to Luminosity blend). As the response of the Lightness channel is different to linear gamma and standard gamma encoded spaces, for some image content one may be preferred over the other as the processing space.
I would still like to explore the original topic/post before submitting a bug report. How do you think things should work?
    Regards,
    Stephen Marsh

  • Can't see the installed icc profiles for my paper in print module

I have downloaded and installed the icc profiles for my favourite Canson and Crane Museo papers on my new Macbook Pro but they don't show up in the options box in the LR 4 print module. Is there another step I have missed? Thanks in advance.

Where did you install the profiles? They should go into
Library/Colorsync/Profiles in your home folder or at the root level of your
hard disk. If you put it in that folder in your home folder, they show up
in user, if you put them in the root Library folder, they show up in
    "Computer" in Colorsync utility

  • Icc profiles are not being recognized by epson printer from LR 5 in Mac OS 10.10 yosemite

After switching to Mac OS 10.10 (Yosemite) my epson 3880 is no longer recognizing the icc profiles. Is anyone else having this issue?
I've already reinstalled all epson drivers and printer options to no avail. I'm thinking that lightroom and the printer are not communicating the icc profile info?

    Striebig wrote:

That's not how it works. If LR does the color management, it converts the image from its working space (linear ProPhoto RGB) to the space defined by the ICC printer profile that you have designated in the Print module and sends to the printer that (converted) data. The printer driver should be set to "No Color Management" and therefore has no need to know the ICC profile. If you set LR to "Color Management: Managed by Printer", no profile is designated in LR, the data is sent unconverted, and you have to set the driver interface to the appropriate ICC profile - again no communication of the printer profile, although LR does send data that describes the working space so that the driver can make the conversion.

  • Could not complete the paste command because the icc profile is invalid

    Hi. In PS CS4 & AI CS4.
I get the following error when I try to copy & paste a logo from Illustrator into Photoshop:
could not complete the paste command because the icc profile is invalid
I don't understand because the color settings are sychronized. I do this all the time. I have not received this error before.
    Thanks.

I received the file from my client. However, last week I had no trouble pasting the same file into a PSD file, as a smart object.
The color file is a label mechanical, which I place into a PSD file of the product. These are used for print ads and web graphics. The color is very critical and has worked really well for the last 4 years.
I have used the default color settings in Creative Suite and its been working fine. They are in synch and, I have no idea how to re-assign the color profile. I’m a graphic Designer, color correction is not something I would do normally.
