Missing image icons/previews

I have a library where the small icons for all pictures are missing. The photos with associated names are still there, if you click any of the missing icons.
Any suggestions? I've tried rebuilding the library.

While I did not find a direct way to fix my problem, even though the library was not located anywhere other than the standard Pictures folder, and I tried rebuilding the database several times.. And also tried a few other fixes, after Googling.
But in the end, updating to iLife '11 and rebuilding the database fixed it for me.

  • Image Icon previews

For some reason, in the past week, Finder seems to have lost the ability to show me image previews via the Icon view option.
I have used this feature without a problem since the day I got my new MacBook Pro (17' model of the latest version). In the past when I've connected my camera (Nikon D40) I have been able to view all of the files though finder, and have had the option of seeing an image preview of every picture by switching to icon view. Now, however, I can only see a preview when in Columns mode with a single image selected. Even Coverflow won't show me anything besides the stock JPEG icon.
The problem persists even after the files are exported onto my computer, and even old images, which I know have shown me previews before in Icon and Coverflow modes, simply show up with JPEG logo now.
This is an enormous pain. I work at a newspaper and I deal with tons of pictures on a daily basis. Being able to see those icon previews was a huge selling point for my machine.

    Two things to try:
    1. Delete the Finder's preference file. It is here:
    "/Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist"
After you delete it, open a window with graphic files, and re-do the Show Icon Preview and click the Use as Default button.
    2. Try things in your test account. Don't have one? You should, it is very useful for testing things like this and takes almost no space. Go to System Prefs->Accounts, create a new account and give it Admin privileges. Log in to the test account and see if everything works as normal. If so then there is a problem with your regular account. If they still aren't right, then there is a system level problem and, depending on what it is, the easiest solution might be to restore from your Time Machine backup or do an archive and install of the system.

  • Missing image thumbnail/preview in finder?

When scrolling through image files (jpg) within finder as organized in "column view," I used to be able to select an image just once (not opening up the preview application) but seeing a little thumbnail in the column view within finder. This was the case up until Mountain Lion. Does anyone know how to regain this feature?

Just kidding...found it in VIEW menu

  • HTAccess - set default image for missing image

    Hi Folks,
I have a folder full of images and when en images is called form that directory and not found I would like the default image to show up.
I have added an HTAccess file with this content:
    ErrorDocument 404 default.jpg
And added a default.jpg image in the directory.
I have used this approach successfully on a few other sites but in this instance when I open a page with a missing photo I still get the standard ugly missing image icon. However, if I open that image in a new tab I get a page with the text 'default.jpg' on it.
Anyone got an idea how I can fix it?
    Cheers
    Dave

If I remember well, in the Report Attributes, you should select the linked column. At the link image, there are 2 edit images(the default is the big one), but there is one more image which is smaller.
    Hope it helps.

  • Icon previews missing on jpegs saved from Safari

This did not happen in Tiger and Safari 2. I always saw the icon preview of any jpegs dragged from a safari window to, say, the desktop ... now, in Leopard, I get the generic Photoshop symbol (jpegs are pref'd to open in PS). I can only get the icon preview of the image if I resave it in PS.
It's little thing but, it's frustrating as jpegs from the web usually have generic file names, so the preview comes in very handy for me. Yes, my view options are pref'd for icon preview. Thanks for your hep.

    Hi Tim
I'm curious why dragging an image from the web to your desktop creates a jpg file with a Photoshop icon. OS X natively assigns this action to Preview. Either you previously changed the jpeg "open with" assignment in either in Leopard or prior to Photoshop, or a 3rd party application did it for you?
As I posted, if I drag an image from Safari to the desktop, the image icon appears rather than a generic icon. Here's the image file appearing on my desktop:
Here's a screenshot of that file on the desktop:
If I open the info panel to that file, this is what I see:
When you open the info panel, do you see an image in the Preview section or a generic icon?

  • Image Details and icon preview not coming up in OSX

I converted a few of my layered Tiff files to Photoshop PSD format to reduce the file size, and now the image size that normally appears under the image icon in the Finder (eg 2068 x 3471, when you have ticked Show Info in the Command J dialog box) is no longer there. I regularly refer to the image size info. It's very useful to me.
Is this a problem with Photoshop not storing the file size in a way that OSX can read? Can I do something in OSX to have PSD files show this info - and also, to have the PSD icon show an actual preview? There is nor problem with Tiff or jpeg files.

Photoshop files never show the size information in an icon view window, although the Finder should draw a custom thumbnail if you have that preference set in View options for the window. If you have the preference in Photoshop itself set to make custom thumbs it will do so, and then the thumb will be visible in all window views regardless of the Finder's window option preference. Why the size doesn't display in icon view I don't know. The Finder CAN read the information: if you do a GetInfo on the Photoshop file, or have the window set for Column view with the option to show a preview column the pixel dimensions ARE shown. I would say it is some sort of oversight in the Finder's code that it doesn't display the dimensions in icon view.

  • Preview Image icon in Finder

    Hi everyone!
I couldnt exactly find a help topic for this...
I just want to know why the image icon in the finder windows doesnt change when you alter the image in preview? Say I cropped an image in preview or rotated it, the preview icon of the image in finder is the original but when you click to open it, its the altered image.
Should I have clicked on something in the preferences? Or is it really like that.
Because in my desktop, the image does change when it got restarted but not in the finder window.
    Any reply would be appreciated....thanks!

I have the same problem. I edit my pictures with HP Photosmart Studio. I might crop it, rotate or change it to black and white but the icon will stay the same. When I open it in Preview it is fine. I also have Windows XP installed through parallels, the strange thing is when I go to XP windows explorer it shows the correct Icon and correct image for the picture.
It really buggin me please help.
Also when I try to upload a picture I can not switch it to thumbnail like in Windows to see the picture I am attaching. Any ideas???

  • How do I make image icons in finder window previews of the image?

The image icons in my finder window are just generic jpeg icons (they are set to open automatically in Preview). How do I make them previews of the images themselves? When I "get info" on the icon, there is a very nice preview of the image - I would like to see the same quality preview in the icons themselves.
Thank you very much for your help.
    Sam
    Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Sam,
From your Finder "View" menu (without a Finder window open) >> "Show view options" >> do you have "show icon preview" check marked? And with the Finder window open "show icons" and "show preview icons" checkmarked?
EDIT: I may have misunderstood your question. If you're talking about the small file icons, not in the preview frame if you have PhotoShop it should do it with a save as PS file. Otherwise you may be able to paste the image but I'm not sure.

  • Finder List View and White Border around photo image files (icon preview)

Hey everyone, just curious if anyone knows how to remove the stripes from list view in the finder window? I tried a method that worked for Leopard but no luck with Snow. And for photos, the icon previews have real thick white borders around them, can these be removed (or at least inverted)? They are so distracting when looking through hundreds of images...
    Thanks,
    Jason

I just found an app that will get rid of the white borders and preserve the original date in the photo's EXIF data. It is CocoThumbX and can be downloaded from http://www.stalkingwolf.net/software/cocothumbx/.

  • Image files no longer appear as "icon preview"

Previously I could view all my .png image files in the "icon preview" mode in Finder.
I must have accidently changed some setting where I can no longer view .png files in the "icon preview" mode. I just get the generic .png icon to appear in finder. I have the "show icon preview" item checked in view options, and most other image files appear as icons...just not the .png files.
    Any thoughts? Thanks.

You could have turned "show icon preview" off and set that as a default.
In a folder with images, set to "icon" press command+j and make sure that "show icon preview" is ON.
If it's ON and still no luck, turn it off, close the folder, reopen and try again.
It seems that some images have previews in them (from Photoshop or similar) and will show previews even with the above option set to off. Others need the option to be ON.
Also, what do you see if you select one of the preview-less images and hit the s p a c e ?

  • Icon images not previewing file content

I installed Leopard on MacBook Pro and on a G5 iMac. On the latter computer, the desktop file icons (iWorks document and others) display a preview of the document, but on the MacBook Pro, the icons display an image of the application. Minor issue, but I would like to understand why.

    Some possible answers.
Firstly, you have checked that the desktop folder and any other relevant folders on the offending machine have their view options set to show icon preview?
Secondly, some files are given icons by applications that do not create a preview. In these cases the preview creation can be triggered by deleting the existing icon in the getinfo window. (That will not be the problem with iwork however).
Thirdly the previews are graphics intensive and, particularly if there are a lot of them, the system has to display at once it can struggle (or sometimes if files are tossed quickly onto the desktop I have experienced the finder needing to be prompted to redraw the desktop before the preview icons appear). It may be that your MacBook's graphics card is not handling Leopard's graphics as well as it might.

  • Xperia z3 foto widget show broken image icons instead of image thumbnail/preview

Initially I used my Z3 without SD card. Everything word fine: album AND the foto widget which allows to browse through taken pictures.After- installing an SD card,- changing the location for newly taken pictures to SD card- AND moving some pictures to other directories -- AND creating a number of .nomedia files on these directories to make these pictures not appear in the album nor in the foto widget, the foto widget shows a broken image icon for ALL pictures taken until this change. All new pictures display fine in the widget and the album app. I delete the album cache and data file (in settings -- all apps -- album). This didn't change anything (so far). How can I force the album app/widget to recreate it's database and preview/thumbnails?? Thanks a lot.M~

    uliwooly wrote:
@z3_owner Settings > apps > album > clear data > uninstall updates > restart the phone > wait few minutes > remove the nonmedia files too. Followed your instructions without success so far.a) how long could it take to recreate database and thumbnails? The main picture directory (DCIM on the SD card) contains almost 1000 pictures).b) Where should the .thumbnails directory reside? Should it -- after switiching to the SD -- be in /storage/sdcard1/DCIM or still in  /storage/sdcard0/DCIM as it was before the installation of the SD card?c) How can I either force the media scanner to run and update the foto widget pictures and album database or see/verify that it does run. Thanks again. Michael

  • CS6 Images saved not showing image in preview finder to upload or open.

When saving images in CS6 I can see them as preview icons of the image in finder by itself, but if I open a file in photoshop to find an image, i only have titles and not the images. ALSO when I go to upload an image to blog or facebook, again I have no image icon of what is there, only a blank space and a file name.  I HATE THIS as it makes it takes too much time to figure out where the picture is. I am a graphic artist and a painter and I cannot work like this. HELP PLEASE. Does not matter what type of file.. tiff, png, jpg etc... there is no image to see when opening through photoshop or any upload situation.  I am able to see the images from FINDER by itself or if I am placing them into MUSE or INDESIGN.
SO I am totally confused why I cannot see them to load on blogger or facebook or to open them in photoshop.

Not sure if what you're seeing is related to the general problem being reported about missing thumbnails on Macs, but you might want to look through this (fairly long) thread:

  • Icon Preview Problem in Finder

    Hi,
I've had my new MacBook for about a month now, and as my photo collection has grown I'm starting to notice that while using CoverFlow (which I have as the default view for most of my folders), there are always some icons that appear as a generic JPEG icon instead of having the image preview. This problem goes away (all icons have previews) once I open the same folder again or refresh it somehow (for example by selecting Calculate All Sizes in View Options). However, once I restart/log in again, it happens again. Most of the images are normal JPG's from the web, and which ones have missing previews is completely random. This applies to all of my folders, and I've seen the same thing on several other Macs as well (the family iMac and several others in Apple Stores). This only appears in CoverFlow view, though.
Here are a couple of screenshots to illustrate the problem:
    http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l4/Octavarius/Screenshot-IconsinFinder.jpg
    http://i92.photobucket.com/albums/l4/Octavarius/Screenshot-IconsinFinder2.jpg
Does anyone else also experience this issue? Is it a common issue? The Show Icon Preview option is checked, by the way.
    Any ideas?
    Regards,
    Jacob

Keep in mind that it's the icons below the Cover Flow section that are the problem. The blurry photos in the Cover Flow section on the first screenshot have very small resolution, that's why they're blurry, but if you look in the second pic, you'll see some others that are completely sharp. Just in case you misunderstood.
I do sometimes get blurry pictures in the Cover Flow section, just after they're downloaded, but once I log out and back in, they're fine and stay that way.
Once I click Get Info on an icon that's missing the preview it's immediately refreshed and the preview is there again, as it should be. It seems like Finder is sometimes skipping certain previews the first time you open a folder since log in.
What did you mean by custom icon? How do you set/delete one?

  • Missing Thumbs and Previews

I've been having some problems with projects that have lost their thumbnails and the previews that go with them. All the metadata is there and if the disc in in the preview will show. All these images are referenced and on a CD/DVD.
While messing around to see what might be "on" or "off" I noticed an Activity icon to which I've added to my tool bar. When I go to my project that have the missing thumbs and previews the activity window shows updating library, building previews, and Paused.
Is there a shortcut or something I can do to get that to Resume. Buttons on bottom are only pause and cancel task, no Resume.

    Thanks, station_two!
I have surprised there all pictures from OneDrive on Windows 8.1.
When i copy those out of OneDrive thumbnails generated
Then copy all folder with images back and all works good!
    Very strange. But good!
