Missing Image Trace Plugin in Illustrator CC?

The Image Trace feature is missing in my subscription version of Adobe Illustrator CC. The words appear in the dropdown menu, but the flyout menu does not list the usual functions, and the few that it does list are greyed out.

  • Missing Image Trace

    I am trying to turn a drawing into vector art. I have scanned the drawing and opened it in Photoshop CS6. After looking on the web one option was to use Image Trace, but my Photoshop doesn't appear to have any panel / tool / window labeled 'Image Trace'. This is what I have available under the 'Window' tab. Is Image Trace an extension I need to download? If so where can I find it?

    Image Trace is an Illustrator function.

  • Missing images when saving an illustrator file in pdf format

    It just happens with some of my files. Somehow, there are layouts that have the images properly linked, are seen on screen as they have to and so on but when I save them as pdf or try to print them suddenly some of the pictures are missing.
    Does anybody have the same problem? I've tried to solve it saving the document as different formats but the problem persists.
    Thanks a lot!

    We all have Acrobat Professional reader 7.0.
    I guess he has Windows but tried to open the file from his ipad too.

  • Preserving 'White' areas, but not backgrounds, in an image trace

    Hi there all
    I've got a little graphic that I'm working on at the moment. I am trying to trace it using the Image Trace feature in illustrator.
    Everything's hunky dory apart from the fact that the original graphic has a lot of white features on it that I want to preserve. These white bits are not bordered so, in the main page of illustrator, they merge with the white background. When I go to use Image Trace, I can either select "Ignore white" which leaves out all of this white detailing, or I can deselect it which means that the trace then includes the white background and the whole image is set into an annoying box.
    Does anyone know how I can remedy this? I know in Photoshop, there's that checked background that shows when your work surface is empty. Is there a way of getting this same thing in Illustrator?
    Thanks!
    CF

    CF,
    It rather depends on the image.
    With Illy, you can use View>Show Transparency Grid or View>Show Grid to see whether there is a background, just as in Photoshop.
    In that way you can get rid of that non colour appearing as white, but it will not be included in Image Trace because it is not (included in the image).
    But if the image itself contains a white background, Image Trace will be unable to discern that from any other part of the image.
    So you may need to have the image in a format without the white background, such as PNG24 instead of JPEG, or with another colour as background.

  • Image Trace CS6 moving results

    When using image trace in CS6, illustrator seems to be shifting the results.  Is there anyway to prevent this.  I have several images that I am tracing along with other vector elements that need to stay in alignment with each other.
    The Blue is the location of the original image and the black is the tracing result.  I'm seeing this shift in each of the view modes and regardless of which preset I use.  I've also tried leaving the image linked and embedding the image with no difference.
    In addition, I am having a hard time getting black and white images to trace to the same quality I had in CS4.  As you can see I'm getting pinched sections on lines even with a Path setting of 97-100% and Noise of 1 px. I also tried a path setting of as low as 20%, the pinching of the lines was gone, but it was so over generalized that I lost a lot of the other character.
    In CS4 I was able to use path fitting 2px Min area 10px corner angle 20 and get this much better result
    No shift, the white hole is preserved, there is no pinching of the line.  I keep reading how the new image trace is supposed to be so much better,  but I can't seem to find any evidence of it in a simple a black and white image.
    Although, my main concern is the shift, any help getting a more accurate result would be appriciated.

    could you post your results with both the original and the trace result?  Black and white logo was one of the first settings I tried.  Also, I should point out that my screenshots are of a zoomed in portion of the image I am tracing.  The image itself has a dpi of 800.  The shift that I see when I do tracing (even at the preset black and white logo) is 0.6mm x 0.4mm.  While this may not sound significant, it does make a big difference in terms of registration with the numerous other elements in my file and is clearly visible at 100% zoom scale.
    Also, I am not surprised that it was able to duplicate the sample you showed above in terms of detail, since you were using the more generalized unusable result from my sample.  If you use my CS4 result as your starting point, are you able to capture the detail?
    In my sample I also did not use strokes.  Everything is an area path.   That is what makes the differences between the CS4 results and the CS6 results seem more like a bug in CS6.  Also, I tried to set my noise value to its lowest setting and it still removed areas greater than one pixel.  Is there another preference inside of illustrator that controls the image trace options?
    I understand that some images need cleaned up prior to tracing and have done that in the past, however, upgrading to CS6 should not mean that I now have to do even more prep work on my images to get the same (or in this case lower quality) results than I have in the past.

  • Connect missing lines in image trace

    I am teaching myself Illustrator and I came across the image trace feature in CS6. I am able to to copy my drawing and do the image trace feature, but I am having trouble connecting missing lines to do a color fill without selecting the background area.
    Now, I may sound dumb, so please forgive me, but is there a way to connect missing lines using the image trace, or pen feature, that will allow me to select a specific area and do a color fill with selecting the background as well?

    To upload an image, click on the camera icon in the toolbar for this forum.
    The direct selection tool will select all points if you click on the object. But you can click on a single point, shift select other points or drag select. If there is another object below the object you want to edit, use the move tool and double click on the object to put in isolation mode. In that mode only that object is editable.(click the gray bar above to get out of isolation mode or press escape key)
    When using the direct selection tool make sure there is not a plus side of the cursor, if there is that's the wrong tool. (just press the lowercase a on keyboard)
    To join to end points(they must be end points and only two points are allowed at a time)
    Use the direct selection tool (lowercase a)
    Select one point
    Hold shift and select second point
    Object>Path>Join (ctrl-j on windows and cmd-j on mac) or if you have a two button mouse you can right click and choose join from the menu.

  • Illustrator Image Trace doesn't work with large images

    Illustrator's Image Trace doesn't seem to work at all with large images.  The attached image shows the following:
    A) The original raster cropped tightly.
    B) Converting the raster with default "Black and White Logo" settings.  Results in 242 paths and 4792 anchors.
    C) Adding a massive amount of white space and then converting the raster with default "Black and White Logo" settings.  Results in 407 paths and 1620 anchors.
    For whatever reason Illustrator can't seem to handle large images.  This test shows it's not an issue with the image being too complex since all I've done is add white space and the file was saved without compression so there should be no noise.
    This type of glitch started with CS6 with the new Image Trace tool.  Is there a fix for this?  Maybe setting Image Trace into legacy mode?

    Moving to Illustrator forum.

  • How to image trace multiple objects at once on Illustrator CC?

    Hello,
    This may sound like a stupid question, but I am having troubles trying to image trace multiple objects all in one go.
    I'm currently working on Illustrator CC and I remember this process being a lot easier to do on Illustrator CS5.
    I have a typical job where I create client specific barcodes on a separate program, and then bringing them into Illustrator to vectorize.
    When I used to do it in CS5, all I had to do was release clipping masks, select all 50 or so barcodes, then Image Trace - and voila, al of my barcodes were vectorized at once - easy.
    I now have to vectorize about 120+ barcodes and Illustrator CC is only letting me select & image trace one barcode at a time. There has to be a better way, and I'm hoping someone here can help.
    (I would open up CS5 and do it from there, but my work computer was recently replaced with a newer iMac and was only provided with Illustrator CC)
    Thanks!

    Not sure what your barcode-specific challenges and methods may be, but my general aversion to the image trace feature compels me to suggest that you just create the barcodes in vectors in the first place. I do that using Terry Burton's free online barcode generator.

  • Going from PSD file to Illustrator image trace: Background not transparent

    Okay guys so a friend has drawn me a "man" in Psd and I want to convert it in AI because I don't want it to look very pixely (great scientific term). The man is on a transparent layer as below:
    I was then able to bring it into illustrator fine. I used the image trace function and got some great results. The image looks more as I intended.(below). The only problem is the transparent layer goes and is replaced by a white layer. This "man" needs to be placed on top of other elements and so the bg needs to be transparent. I've scoured the forums but couldn't find a conversion topic specific to the image trace function. Is there a way to do this without the bg turning white? Am I importing the file wrong into illustrator? Is it the settings of the image trace function? I'm very new to illustrator so would very much appreciate all the help I can get.
    Cheers,
    Cam.

    look at your trace settings and (in CS5 at least) tick Ignore white.

    If you are talking about Reader (you did post in the Reader forum), then just download http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise. However Reader is free not purchasable. You can download a trial then install using your serial number, which if you didn’t register or write down somewhere you will be out of luck to track down.

    Custom will show automatically as soon as you just edit some options. So just go ahead, you don't need to select "custom"

  • Illustrator CC trial not letting me use Image Trace?

    Hi!
    I recently downloaded the trial of Illustrator CC to my updated Macbook pro and have come to find that it won't let me use image trace or even pull up any tracing control panels.. I can pull up the tracing workspace but if I try to click "trace image" nothing happens and if I  try to open the drop down presets, again nothing happens.. Under the main drop down menus, image trace or any form of tracing is nowhere to be found..
    Is tracing not included in the trial and I just didn't get the memo or is something wrong?
    Thank you so much for any help!

    caitln,
    You may start on the following, and hope you will only get to the easy ones until it works or someone comes up with something better.
    It is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences):
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

    CHeck if there are clipping masks applied.

  • New Image Trace in Illustrator CS6 | Visual Design CS6 | Adobe TV

    Product manager Brenda Sutherland Convert shows how to convert raster images to editable vectors using a completely new tracing engine in Illustrator CS6.

    While the Help videos are fun to watch, they are NOT AT ALL helpful.  Imagine yourself as a new user  (or a user migrating up from CS3-CS5 to Cloud CS6) who wants to learn how to use Illustrator Image Trace (or find where it was moved for this release) .   Now, watch the videos currently posted.  Where is this command located?  Where are the presets located?  Where are the tools located?  It seems the demonstrators are right clicking on the mouse and  using keyboard shortcut commands. which do not "show" on the video.  Do we really need 12 minute videos?
    As a long time user and sometime trainer, text instructions are much faster to search/read/refer and easier to remember than flashy graphics, loud music and a talking head.
    The Adobe website forces users to be caught in a Contact Us loop when looking for help.  For example, I spent 20 minutes looking for a printed version of a help file, 20 minutes in a chat session with a customer service rep who eventually gave me a number to call, then 57 minutes on the phone with a technician who was not familiar with the issues or the software.  He did, however, help me find the PDF help file but we were unable to search for the words Paint or Trace ... until he looked it up (Ctl F).  In fact, the only way to search the PDF file is to download it to the user's hard drive and use the Find command (Mac/PC).  This was only for Illustrator.  Same story for Photoshop (issue resolved by reinstalling) and In Design.
    Honestly, the entire Creative Cloud experience has truly been frustrating - from download to support.  If cars were like computers, we'd still be driving horse and buggies.

    I think in CS5, it was called "Live-Trace." Whatever it's called, it should become available on the options panel (the context-sensitive control panel at the top) when you select a trace-eligible raster image on your artboard.
