Missing image when export to pdf & in High Quality Display

Customer sent me this file so I have no history. Latest version of InDesign. There are a few images that when I select the box it does not show it as linked, but there is an image there. These same images/boxes disappear when I select View>High Quality Display & they are also missing when I make a pdf. Many other images are linked and work fine. What's going on with these other images/boxes? Embedded maybe? I don't have experience with embedded images, how do I get them to show when making a pdf?

Is this what your looking for Peter?

  • Indesign CS4 adds square boxes around images when exporting to PDF

When I export a brochure created in InDesign to PDF, for some reason the .pdf file (only the PDF - the InDesign version doesn't show these) shows faint squares around images/graphics that have shadow effects applied. These appear around photos, as well as graphic objects that have a solid colour background, for example an orange circle. Some suggested rasterizing images in Illustrator and that didn't help. Transparency doesn't seem to be at fault either. Would anyone have any idea what may be causing this and how to remedy the problem?
FYI, the PDF export pre-sets in InDesign are as follows (I only mention options that are checked, the rest are turned off):
    COMPATIBILITY: Acrobat 5 (PDF 1.4)
    GENERAL:
         HIGH QUALITY PRINT (modified)
         Export Layers:Visible & Printable Layers
    COMPRESSION:
         COLOR IMAGES:
Bicubis Downsampling to 300 pixels per inch for images above 450 pixels per inch
         Compression: Automatic JPEG
         Image Quality: Maximum
      GRAYSCALE IMAGES:
Bicubis Downsampling to 300 pixels per inch for images above 450 pixels per inch
         Compression: Automatic JPEG
         Image Quality: Maximum
      MONOCHROME IMAGES:
Bicubis Downsampling to 1200 pixels per inch for images above 1800 pixels per inch
         Compression: Automatic JPEG
         Compression: CCITT Group 4
FYI - I use Mac OSX 10.5.8 and InDesign 6.0.3.
I have attached the PDF for your review.
    With many thanks,
    Alex

BTW, don't use OSX's preview to look at PDFs created by InDesign if they take advantage of high end features such as live transparency.
Preview simply isn't up to the task and you should be using Acrobat or Reader.

  • ID CS hangs on one particular image when exporting to pdf

I use ID 3.01, and have created a two-page folder, with 10 images. I cannot create a pdf, because ID hangs when downloading one image during the export process. It's an 8-bit CMYK Tiff, one layer only, saved without compression. The only thing that makes this image different, is that it has some InDesign text and graphics on top of it. (I tried to remove all the text and graphics, and I also tried embedding the images before exporting, but it made no difference)
The image opens without any problems in Photoshop, and is editable. I have also tried to do a Save As under a new name, which didn't help. The image originates from my Nikon D70, but so do other images too.
The folder is due to be printed on Thursday, so any help will be greatly appreciated.

As this is a camera original file, are its resolution settings in a normal range? I.e., verify in PhotoShop that it's not trying to put >5000 pixels into either 0.1 inch or 5000 inch (your numbers may vary).
I've had ID behave erratically with such files, which was solved when I changed the resolution settings in PS.

  • Gray rule around clipped images when exporting as PDF?

I've been clipping images in Photoshop CS6 (Macbook Pro retina) and placing them in my InDesign layout but when I export to PDF, a gray rule appears around the clipped images. It is not visable anywhere in the Photoshop files. Thank you for any advise!

Thank you for the reply. I'm placing the image as a photoshop file, with layers. I clipped the background out using clipping paths and/or masks, added drop shadows, fixed the color a bit. Here is a screen shot of the PDF: the shadow is correct but not the hard gray rules.

  • Missing objects when exporting to PDF

I have seen some discussions on this, but no solution. I am using Indesign CS5.5 all up to date. Every now and then I end up with an exported PDF that does not have all the pages objects, text or elements included on all the pages. This seems to occur more often when I am doing a data merge and end up with 750 or 1000 page file. It also seems to be master page items. All Master page items do make it into the merged data file just fine, but then do not make it to the exported pdf. It leaves me scratching my head. The first, two, or three pages of the pdf will be fine, it's when you start scrolling through the document that you realize that items are missing. And for me, the first time was after printing a rush job, and finding the problem.
    Underdog

I create the merged indesign file from the data merge panel. I then merge all records to a new indesign file. All items are created in the new indesign file. Master page items no problem. It's when I then export to pdf that I have the problem of missing ojects, text and so forth in the pdf. Usually the problems show up around page 3 and after. For some reason the first two or three pages will show fine. I have learned to be very careful about assuming that the pdf is correct.
I am using a mac mini 10.7.5 with Adobe Creative Premium Suite 5.5, all applications are up to date. Mac OSX is showing up to date as well.

  • Missing images when printing to pdf from Word

When printing to pdf from MS Word 2003 in some cases textboxes and/or images disappear in the target PDF, depending on their position.
Word and Acrobat Standard are the latest updates. If the Word text is converted on a Mac the target pdf has the images present, so it looks like it's a Windows only problem. Any suggestions where to start looking for a fix?

You may have to turn on "display large images" in the preferences.

  • Crop mark on image when exporting to PDF

When I export my INDD file to PDF, crop marks appear on one of the images (an EPS file) in the converted document. The crop marks do not appear in the INDD file, nor are they part of the original EPS file. Any idea what's happening and how to get rid of it?

Screen shots would help here, but the first thing I would try is replace the EPS file with a native file format, either .al for vector or .psd for raster, or PDF for mixed content.

  • Blank images when exporting to PDF

I am trying to export a 20+ page spread indesign file to PDF. When doing so, some of the images are showing blank once it has been exported. What is happening?

Well, miraculously it started working, but in case it happens again.. here is more information.  I am using CS5. I have made a portfolio of my design work and only some of the files are blank. I used PDF interactive. Some of the images in my portfolio are line drawings and others are charcoal drawings. Only Some of the line drawings are the ones that are just blank when I export it.

  • VS2008 - ReportDocument missing data when exporting to PDF

    Hi all,
    First and foremost, I'm using:
    - VS2008 with CR Basic (10.5.3700.0)
    - CR 2008 SP4 (12.4.0.966)
    - SQL Server 2008
I've developed a small VB.Net application that's supposed to simply load a report, set appropriate connections and parameters and finally export it to PDF.
While it works on simple reports, I'm having trouble with a report that uses a Stored Procedure to link between two tables. The PDF shows all the data that's obtained directly from tables, but misses the details that depend on the Stored Procedure.
This same report previews perfectly on CR 2008 SP4, where it's been developed.
What I've tried, based on SDN and general web search:
    - Different ODBC and OLE DB (both SQLOLEDB and SQLNCLI / SQLNCLI10): No change.
    - Compile in x86 and x64: No change.
    - Add report to VS2008 project and preview it: No change; same data shown, same data missing.
    - SQL Trace while previewing with CR2008 and exporting with .Net application: This showed something interesting; one fairly  simple SQL query when using CR2008 (that successfully returns data when pasted to SQL) was transformed into a query with several joins and cross joins (that does not return data when pasted to SQL) when using the application. Links being somehow changed, I presumed.
    - Printout all the Database.Links from the ReportDocument prior to exporting: showed they were all correct.
    - Following a post on this forum I've inserted a VerifyDatabase command after loading and setting connections: I now get an "Error in formula" stating that one of the Stored Procedure's fields that's used in a formula "is not known". Commenting this line  results (again) in a successfull export of a PDF... but with the same missing data.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!
    Regards,
    Nuno

I don't think the language was the problem, but I had problems teasing out the correct info I needed (e.g.; CR 10.5 vs. 12.x, 32 bit vs. 64 and so on. But I know where the problem is now:
    SAP Business One reports
This is a special OEM build of Crystal Reports.
It uses a database driver that CR 10.5 does not ship (something like crdb_SAPBusinessOne.dll (?))
So, you can not use CR 10.5 as it is missing the driver.
Using CR 2008 assemblies (12.x) will potentially be also problematic. While you will have the SAP One driver, you may not have the neccessary database logon APIs exposed.
    E.g.; more than likely, this will not work. But, you can try the following;
Make sure you are using CR 2008 (e.g.; remove all of your CR 10.5 references)
Look at the KB [1553921  - Is there a utility that would help in writing database logon code?|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/com.sap.km.cm.docs/oss_notes_boj/sdn_oss_boj_bi/sap(bD1lbiZjPTAwMQ==)/bc/bsp/spn/scn_bosap/notes%7B6163636573733d36393736354636443646363436353344333933393338323636393736354637333631373036453646373436353733354636453735364436323635373233443330333033303331333533353333333933323331%7D.do]. there is a utility attached to the KB that will write out the DB logon code for you - in VB and C#. Use that code to try to connect to the report. The utility uses InProc RAS SDK which is part of CR 2008 and it is a free runtime - just like CR SDK. For basic info on working with InProc RAS SDK see the article [How to Use The RAS SDK .NET With In-Process RAS Server|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/10b840c0-623f-2b10-03b5-9d1913866b32]
Now, keep in mind that I have never seen, never mind worked with a report based on SAP Business One (thus my ignorance as to the name of the actual CR DB driver). So this may work. Or not. All I can do from here is keep my fingers crossed. But please do share any successes or failures...

  • Loosing images when exporting to pdf file from Indesign?

I didn't have this problem before, however as I started using the master page presets some of the pages are not saving properly to pdf version. The master sheets doesnt show up on some of the pages but shows up on others.
Does anyone know why that is?

It does not show in preview.
It shows in the indesign file, but not in preview. The stuff that disappears are from the master page, they show on some pages but not on others. Which is very strange.
    I have taken more shots.
Master F sheet is applied for this page.
The other page i posted previously started working when I applied a different master sheet over it.

  • Any ideas on keeping images on master pages consistently high quality display when exporting to pdf?

Set up the Preflight panel so it checks image resolution. Ask your printer what the appropriate resolution is for your printing process, and set that in Preflight.

  • Background missing when export to PDF CS5.5

    Hi,
I have seen some similar posts (all non-current) to the one I am writing however, my issues are not solved by the solutions posted in previous discussions.
My problem is that when I am exporting an IND file to PDF, when I open the PDF all of my background images are missing. In most examples this is a full page black box. But since testing this problem I have encountered the same issue with any colour and some photographs.
I am working in CS5.5, with all software up to date (version 7.5.3)
I have tested this in new documents and old documents that previously would have exported the background.
These items are not on master pages. I have tested this on brand spankin new pages and existing ones (with and without any elements on master pages)
I have tested the boxes with and without transparency.
There is no issue with overprint or the overprint preview check box.
I have tried saving the file as an .IDML and reopening to see if it will 'debug' the file. I have exported the PDF as every kind of option. I have restarted the computer and the program several times. I have checked for new updates.
The only way that I have 'cracked' this issue so far is to break the one large background image into at least 3 overlapping solid boxes. It seems that you cant have any box overlap more than 2 page boundaries.
Is anyone else having this problem or any other advice on what to try.
    Thank you

    Hi Eugene,
The document in question is 1) not using master pages and 2) not using spreads. Its a single page A4 document.
    Hi Peter,
Sorry I am not trying to span two pages. My comment was that the graphic box seems to glitch when it touches more than 2 boundaries of the page ie left right top bottom.
I am using the full creative suite CS5.5, no hacks, no substitute programs.
I have attached a few screen captures.
    Sample file in indesign:

split the background box into 2 (i have used 2 blacks so you can see the boundary). Export to PDF:

  • Images downsized and converted when exporting to PDF

I have Pagemaker 7.0.1 installed on Virtual XP so that I can help out a family member.
Pagemaker's embedded Acrobat 4 was not working properly so I installed my Acrobat 9.0 on Virtual XP. This unfortunately has not solved the problem, which is:
My images are greyscale and 300 ppi when imported into Pagemaker. When exported to PDF using Acrobat 9.0, the images are being converted to CMYK and exported at about 50% of the actual size. Interestingly, those images that are only at 200 ppi are converted but not downsampled.
This is happening no matter how I fiddle with the settings. Happens to both jpegs and tiffs.
I found an old thread on another forum where this problem occurred but a solution was not found or posted.
    Any ideas?
    Michelle

This reply is a series of comments and suggestions rather than a definitive answer.
    1. Your set up is less than perfect, if not unstable, and will be prone to all sorts of bizarre behaviours.
    2. Never copy/paste a graphic or table into PageMaker.  Always use the Place command. The only "exception" would be that you can copy and paste a properly Placed graphic from within your PageMaker document.
When placing images in a PageMaker file, the following message appears: “The graphic in the linked file would occupy xxxxxxx bytes in the publication. Include the complete copy in the publication anyway?” The correct answer to this question is always "NO".
(You can permanently avoid this popup in future docs by unchecking "store copy in publication" under Element -> Link Options with no publication open. You can do the same to avoid further prompts in pre-existing documents.)
    3. Try updating PM to Ver 7.0.1a which had a better Export… AdobePDF…macro. http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=34&platform=Windows
    4. In PageMaker’s Print dialogue, click on the Options button, and check "Write PostScript to File." Select the "Normal" radio button. Set both Type 1 and TrueType fonts to download. As always, set the Send TIF/Images option to Normal and NOT Optimized. Make other settings elsewhere in the print dialog as desired, such as "paper" size, crop marks, separations, etc.
    5. With your non-standard setup, try the two stage print then distill process. Create a PS file using a postscript printer file, then load Distiller and convert the PS file to PDF.  Note: if you have hyperlinks in your PMD file, they will not appear in your PDF and need to be re-created using Acrobat.
    6. It's time to leave PM and move on to InDesign - see it as PM Ver 13.
    7. Aternatively, use PM7 on a contemporary Win2K PC.  http://bigjohnd.org.uk/PageMakerExportPDF/index.htm

  • Objects missing when exporting to PDF, but show up when printing to PDF

Hi - I'm working with someone, both of us in InDesign CS4, and she has some documents that cause a few random objects to just go missing when exported to PDF (same on my computer). But when printing to PDF, they show up fine. They also show up fine if we recreate each individual object, but that can end up being a lot of work. She prefers to export to PDF because of quality. I'm drawing a blank on this one!
The attached file shows the issue. The green blocks just don't want to show up when exporting.

    Peter -
The links are just the PDFs of the black and white portions and don't really matter too much since they show up fine when exporting or printing to PDF. Our main concern is the green blocks, which are indeed the green areas of the plan you pointed out. They are actually separate objects created directly within InDesign that can be moved and adjusted.
I just updated to 6.0.4 and that didn't help. I wonder if this may be a variant of the bugs I was reading about with master pages and certain things not showing up when creating PDFs or printing (even though none of these things are on the master page)?
    Thanks
