Missing iMovie plist?

Hello,
I have been having some trouble with the clips in a project I'm editing, and have looked online for some solutions. I have often seen people adivsed to go to their references folder and delete the com.apple.iMovie.plist file. Then, when you restart iMovie, it will generate a new plist with the default settings restored.
My problem is that, when I go to Library/Preferences, there is no file by that name. I have com.apple.iLife.plist and com.apple.iLife09.plist, but not one for iMovie. Could this be the source of the problem?

I can't find a folder called "Home" I'm afraid. But, in the meantime, the same problem has occured again: I have been editing a project and it was going fine - but I shut down iMovie to do some other things, and when I reopened it, the project I was working on is now corrupted. When I select it from the list of projects I have, the "Edit Project" button goes grey, and I cannot even enter it to edit. Do you know why this might be? It seems so pernicious: randomly deciding that it is broken now, and cannot be used, which simply wastes so much of my time! I am desperate to be able to use this programme without interference from random bugs and crashes, but I can't seem to avoid them! What is most frustrating is that I use iMovie at work to create some very boring and generic material for my company, and it always works perfectly. But when I want to create something that I want to create, at home, suddenly the programme can't work. It is such a collosal waste of my time, but I really want to use it to make something.

  • Missing imovie options in File Analyze Video

How do I enable the "People Finder" option in iMovie '11?  When I select "File" the only option for analysis is "Analyze for Stabilization".  I don't know if I am missing other options, too.
Checking this thread (https://discussions.apple.com/message/12472264#12472264), I verified I DO have the "Show Advanced Tools" enabled.

That indicates where the problem reside.
    A. reg downloading iMovie - Have no idea - my are on a iLife DVD
    B. BUT - try this first
    • Start a new User account
    • Log into this
    • Now try iMovie
If the tools are OK here - then the problem to 99.5% resides in a bad pref file
If so - You need to trash MORE
    • Delete iMovie pref. file
    iMovie pref. file resides.
Mac Hard Disk (start-up HD)/Users/ "Your account" /Library/Preferences
and is named. (one or more of these)
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
    com.apple.iMovie9.plist
    com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
    and find
    com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
If You run Mac OS X.7 or more - then the Library in the User-account folder is invisibly and need to be set to be viewable. IT IS NOT in the Library on Root level (when opening MacintoshHD - first window = root level)
( It can be done like this: Open Terminal, then enter: chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press return, then restart, and it will always be visible until the next major update, when you do the same thing again. )
    or - do like this.
On the Finder window at the top left of the screen,
Hold down the Option key and clicked on Go.
This allowed You to see the Library folder and select it.
Then keep the Option button pressed down in order to see and select the Library folder.
Once found it, You are able to navigate to the iMovie preferences file and move it to the trash.  iMovie then start’s up fine!

  • Question: Which iMovie .plist do you delete?

I'm confused sometimes as to which .plists to delete when iMovie is having problems. I've been noticing as I help people out on the iMovie Discussion group there are a lot of different preferences folders lying around on the Macintosh. For instance:
Example 1: This one is kind of funny because it's two Library folders inside of the Home folder of the user. The path would be like this using the Unix file paths: /Users/Home folder/Library/Library/Preferences. To be honest I didn't find any iMovie .plists in this folder but I did find iPhoto and iDVD.
Example 2: This one is the regular Library that used to be visible in OSes prior to Lion 10.7 but is now hidden away. This is typically where everyone on the iMovie Discussion Group is told to go to delete the com.apple.iMovieApp.plist for problems relating to iMovie '11.
Example 3: This one is in the top level Library folder and it also has a com.apple.iMovieApp.plist contained in it.
Question: Given that there is more than one of these .plist files in more than one spot, should people be deleting more than one .plist file if they are having difficulty with iMovie launching, crashing or unable to operate properly?

    Hi elikness,
iMovie should be reading plists from only one directory, the local user library. ~/library/preferences/
Ex1:  /Users/Home folder/Library/Library/Preferences/ could have been a result of poor troubleshooting. If you are to move the library folder, it is better to rename it via ROOT and test and then rename it back via ROOT again.
    Ex2: is correct ~/library/preferences/
Ex3: I don't have any imovie plists in /Mac HD/library/preferences/. This will have no effect when pulling it.
    I hope this helps clarify.
Let me know you if I can provide further assistance.

  • Dashcode "Missing Info.plist" agony.

    hello all,
i'm having a real pain in the patoot trying to use dashcode under 10.5.6 leopard.
i launch dashcode to create a new countdown widget in Dashcode. i set all the widget attributes and mark that and the customize countdown options as done. i save. i then try and just run it, as is. each and every time i get the same error: "Cannot open widget: Missing Info.plist file." i check the "Files" view and yes, an Info.plist file is in there. also, it's properly named "Info.plist," capital "I," not lowercase "i" on "Info." (yes, i've seen those errors mentioned in these forums.
in addition, if i save everything, shut down dashcode, and re-open it, i then get a Canvas view screen with nothing but the blank, grey checkered canvas where the widget formerly was. and i haven't altered any files or changed a line of code.
i'm on a black macbook with an intel core2duo 2.16 Ghz process, 2 GB ram and mac os x 10.5.6 leopard with all the latest updates to the system applied, security updates and all else.
to make sure it wasn't my development install, i downloaded and installed the latest Xcode 3.1.2 package and iPhone SDK 2.2.1 package and installed them both. i still have the same problem after installing those, restarting, and doing the exact same steps above in Dashcode v. 2.0.1 (159). before this, this never happened to me in dashcode before.
any help as to what is happening here would be most appreciated. thank you.

I am also having problems with dashcode.
If I create a simple generic screen with text, an indicator and a text entry and then save, I see two errors. Sometimes it pretends to save, but afterwards it reverts to the initial hello prompt. Other times it complains that it cannot save (my memory is sketchy as to the exact error because I've been seeing it a while ago).
I initially installed the XCode that came with my macintosh last fall. I don't know the version, but could look it up. I've since then installed the XCode on the site and the XCode that comes with the iphone development kit. I've installed and uninstalled (using both rm and the unistallation command given in the installation readme) in several combinations of the above xcode versions. So far, I've had no luck.
Sorry, I have no answers, but our problems seemed similar enough for me to chime in.

  • Missing Entitlements.plist file is not missing??

    I have two issues;
1     when i created my Entitlements.plist file I went to edit it to set 'set-task-allow' to NO.  Instead what I found was 'Can be debugged' Boolean NO'. when I attempted to change this I got a message saying that that line was already in the dictionary.
2     I also get a message saying the the Entitlements.plist file is missing:
As can be seen the file is in my project.
Any suggestions will be greately appreciated.

This is crazy but this is the solution to my issue.
The error above kept telling me that my Entitlements.plist needed to have
    1234567890.com.companyname*
and I kept ignoring that because I have never read that this was necessary.  So, I did this:
    add :  application-identifier : string : 1234567890.com.companyname*
Good to go right?  Wrong!  I got the same identical error message when I tried to Validate.
    Long story short: From reading I was taught that in Build settings we do the following;
Next to Ad Hoc .. you see Entitlements.plist.  That is the problem.  Remove that reference.
With that line removed my app compiled with no warnings and it Validated!
    Life is Finally Good!!!
Oh, and 'can-be-debugged' has apparently replaced 'get-task-allow' because that line can no longer be entered, at least not in my Xcode version.  It you try you get a message saying that that has already been entered in the dictionary.
    Best!

    Hi
Have no idea - But I do this another way and have near to Zero problem with Audio in any of my projects in iMovie or FinalCut.
    • I never use any .mp3 audio or other alient formats - all converted to .aiff 16-bit 48kHz or 44.1kHz
    • In iTunes I do
    - Collect needed sounds into a New PlayList
    - BURN this as a standard Audio-CD (still .aiff - not .mp3)
    - use the files on this CD in my movies
And by doing so I nearly never get any problems with AUDIO - I hit a lot of other's - but this is very rare to me.

  • Sony TRV340 playback missing, iMovie '06 works fine?

I can control, but not capture audio or video from my old DCR-TRV340 Sony (playing Hi8 recordings). Both iMovie 08 and iDvd 08 fail to capture anything (automatic settings give up claiming no video/audio). If I use iMovie '06 that was pre-installed, it captures just fine.
    Any hints?
    Robert

Found something more to this ... Digital 8 recorded tapes work in iMovie '08, but older analog tapes playing through the 340 don't come through in '08, but work in '06.
Could it be that the time code is missing??? The counter doesn't move during playback either.

  • Missing iMovie Event

Using my Vanopus video capture device, I "digitized" two VHS tapes saving them as iMovie events. After I was done, I wanted to view/edit the videos using iMovie. In the iMovie window, both events are listed. However, only one shows the video. BUT...when I use finder to look into the folder that stores my iMovie events (Users/mycomputer/Movies/iMovie Events/, the "missing" video file is there. I can view the file using Quicktime Player, but cannot import, cut/paste, drag/drop it back into iMovie for editing.

Sorry for the late reply. To be honest, I'm not sure how I deleted the thumbnails...I was just trying a bit of everything. Sorry I couldn't be of help.

  • My Mac Pro is missing Imovie, how do I install without paying for it?

So all my friends have the Imovie app in their Mac since they bought them. I bought my Mac at the same time with them but mine is missing this app. I wonder how do I install Imovie without paying money for this thing?

  • Missing iMovie components & Apps after Archive & Install

I recently did an archive & reinstall. Opening iMovie for the first time after it gave me the following error:
"Missing Quicktime Components: The QuickTime components necessary to view, edit, import, and export several kinds of movies are not installed. These components are included with the iMovie installer; please re-install."
iMovie still opened but I didn't want to entrust it with importing files. So I went here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/imovie712.html and downloaded the latest iMovie and tried to install it. But I got this error:
"Alert: An eligible iMovie application was not found in the location /Applications."
Huh, that's weird. So I looked in my Applications folder and not only is iMovie not there, but neither is iPhoto, or iDVD!
I suppose I could bring them back with the versions in my Time Machine prior to the archive and reinstall, but would they come whole? Would it be better to reinstall these from the Installation DVD's? WHo knows what else is missing? Guess that is what I get for using the Leopard Installation DVD I got for my G5, rather than using the disks that came with this MacBook Pro.
    Any advice?

"Missing Quicktime Components: The QuickTime components necessary to view, edit, import, and export several kinds of movies are not installed. These components are included with the iMovie installer; please re-install."
The modal message is telling you that some of the components used by iMovie for import/editing are missing and that the easiest way to re-install them is to re-run the iLife '08 (or more specifically the iMovie '08) installer package. For instance, Imovie '08 installs a special MPEG-2 component that converts normal MPEG-2 content from a DVD or HDD camcorder to all I-frame MPEG-2 content (the equivalent of Motion-JPEG video) which can be edited in iMovie '08. The component also allows you to view such MOV files in the QT Player others others without iLife '08 installed would not be able to view them.
iMovie still opened but I didn't want to entrust it with importing files. So I went here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/application_updates/imovie712.html and downloaded the latest iMovie and tried to install it. But I got this error: "Alert: An eligible iMovie application was not found in the location /Applications."
Re-install from your original installation disks. This area is for upgrading earlier versions of iMovie '08. If you are already running v7.1.4, the the software on this page will not allow you to "upgrade" your software since it is looking for specific older versions. Besides, these upgrades may assume the additional components are already install not may not even bother to check for them.
Would it be better to reinstall these from the Installation DVD's?
    Yes.

  • Missing iMovie/IPhoto Etc.

I reformatted my Mac a few months back before I left for college, just to give it a fresh start. I didn't notice until fairly recently however, that iMovie was missing. I have a class project that could really utilize it. I'm wondering if there is any way to get it back without starting from scratch (have about 15G of music, and ALOT of word files etc already downloaded)
    Thanks!

Getting a new hard drive will not help you. You really need to purchase iLife '08 or find your iLife'08 install disk at home. You may want to make sure you have the rest of the iLife suite.

  • Missing iMovie HD tracks in GarageBand 3: what can be done?

I have a 20 min. project in IMovie HD that utilizes camcorder video, narration and musical tracks derived from ITunes. When I shared the project with GarageBand 3 (wishing to elevate the volume in certain places of the camcorder soundtrack -- having boosted it to the max in IMovie HD but still found it hard to make out the words) the project appeared to lose its music track. That is, NO music at all could be heard.
I WAS able in GarageBand to boost the camcorder sound satisfactorily but without the music I could not go forward and burn a DVD.
Not sure what caused this to happen...
Can GarageBand import multiple soundtracks from iMovie HD?
I have gone as far as I can with sountrack editing in IMovie HD and now wish to add some finishing touches in GarageBand or some other program...
thanks in advance for any help that is received....

I had the same problem but in my case the music track was purchased music from iTunes music store. This will not export to Garageband. For reasons that are not clear to me, iLife will import purchased music into iMovie but not Garageband. If your music did not have DRM, then I don't know what happened.

  • DCHP Problems and missing alf.plist file?

    Hey everyone,
I have been having the DCHP issues/self-assigned IP problems that have been documented a lot on here. I was able to connect fine to my units router until 2 weeks ago and upon trying LAN this morning and my own airport express plugged in, I have discovered that both LAN and Airport are suffereing from lack of DCHP address and as a result no internet.
I was trying to delete the com.apple.alf.plist file but I don't have one? Even terminal can't find it. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this the cause of my probable issue?? I can't log into the router because it isn't mine and what frustrates me more is that I can't get online to update Leopard.....

The first one is a specific as it can possibly be. If you don’t want to add the icon then don’t but it could cause things to look a bit poor on retina devices.
The second one can safely be ignored.

  • Imovie freezes on startup but i dont have the file com.apple.imovie.plist

    Can anybody help me please?
    Greetz

If you have Lion (10.7.2) this is a hidden file.
You can find it by opening a Finder Window. Then, in the top menu bar, click Go. Hold down the option key, and you should see Library. Go to the Library.
There are multiple Library folders. There is the Macintosh HD/Library folder and also the Macintosh HD/Users/<your user name>/Library/ folder. You want the one under your user name.
In this folder, look for the preferences folder. There you should find the plist file.
