Missing iPhone 5 backup

For the second time, my iPhone went into recovery mode without warning and so I am trying to back up my phone with a backup I created in December, but the backup doesn't show. I've used it to back up my phone before, and now it doesn't show any backups more recent than September. I haven't backed up my phone using iCloud, only through my Macbook. Does anyone know where I can find my December computer back up? Thanks!

If you have ever backed up to your computer you should have a MobileSync folder. In newer versions of OS X the Library folder is normally hidden, so you need to follow ckuan's instructions to see it; alternatively use a utility to show hidden files. The easiest way to do this is the free utility Houdini (https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/26729/houdini). You can also use Terminal commands to make all files and folders visible:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder
To hide folders again use the same command, change TRUE to FALSE.
Normally iTunes keeps only the most recent backup, plus the last backup made for each major version update. If you use Time Machine to back up your computer you should be able to use it to restore any version of the backup.
While I realize it doesn't help with the immediate problem, for the future you can force iTunes to keep old backups by archiving a backup. After archiving iTunes will create a new backup. In iTunes Preferences/Devices right click on a backup name and choose "Archive". Note that this is only supported in the Mac version of iTunes, not in Windows.

  • Missing iPhone backup in iTunes from iOS5 update. What happens to the backup files from the update process?

My PC had a BSOD while restoring my data.  After I restarted, opened iTunes, and connected my phone, the restore did not resume. (I have seen the restore process resume after an interruption.)  I tried to manually restore the data, but iTunes does not list the backup that was taken during the update process.  Is this backup stored in a different location or format?  Is there a way I can get my data back?  I tried an extraction tool from the web and it didn't detect the backup from the update.

Same with me; I only found one backup dating back from august; tried that and works fine. But missing all my pics/vids in between. I have been searching my pc for files that were created on the day of the OS upgrade, but could not figure out any backups...
    Any help?

When I restore my iphone, all my music and ring tone are missing. Does Backing up by iphone backup my music and ring tone?

It doesn't matter what it is in your backup that's causing the problem because you can not selectively restore things from your backup. It's all or nothing.
Set you phone up as a new device and start over.

  • Help! No info.plist, manifest.plist, or status.plist on Iphone backup...data can not be recovered

I'm at a lost here, I created a backup of my iphone before I updated my firmware.  When I went to go restore from backup, I noticed it did not backup completely.  I checked the 'C:\Users\Name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup' and noticed that the folder that carries my backup does not have the info.plist, manifest.plist, or status.plist files??  All the data seems to be intact, just no way to extract it.  I already tried to use iPhone Backup Extractor, did not work.  Somebody please help me out, I don't want to be out of luck.  I'm missing all my past important SMS history, curcial Notes and emails.
    Thanks ahead of time,

If your backup is corrupted you cannot retrieve data from it.
I've been working on a tool that repairs most iPhone (iPad, iPod Touch) backups that iTunes reports as corrupted -- it seems to be working fairly well for people we've had using it lately! If someone stumbles on this post and wants to try it out, the program is Decipher Backup Repair, and you can try it here:
    http://deciphertools.com/download-decipher-backup-repair.html
As other people in the thread have mentioned, you can also try some third-party programs to read the backup and pull-out the important data so you at least have it in some capacity. We have one on the website I've linked above, in addition to the repair software.
I hope this helps someone who finds this thread! Dealing with iTunes backups can be really painful, and I know it's horribly depressing to wait through a restore to get the corrupted message after SEVERAL minutes.
(Note: As I mentioned, I work on the backup fixing software I linked to, so I stand to benefit, financially or otherwise, from the links I've provided.)

  • My iPhone Backup from iTunes is very very very slow.

I have seen other people in here complaining that their iphone backups are slow but mine is really really really slow. I lifted my iphone connected to backup last night and in the morning it was still halfway done. When I come to work I connect it to my work computer and by end of the day it is only a quoter done. I don't have a backup and I am not sure what I can do to get this thing to backup.

I'm experiencing the same problem. My iPhone have been backing up less than 1GB (744 MB to be exact) of data for over 12 hours and only less than 2/3 was completed. I then received a telephone call (that I missed) and it started ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!
I have 2 systems Vista and Leopard 10.5.4 and same things happens on both system.
This is extremely annoying, I've been trying to backup for the past week and just haven't been able to succeed.
I was told the latest firmware would resolve this problem. So I upgraded to 2.0.1 and I'm still having the same problem.

  • Restore only *part* of an iphone backup??

Is it possible to restore only part of an iphone backup??
I had exhanged a 3gs at the store yesterday- backed up the old phone before returning it. I used Itunes to set the phone up as a "new" device.
After synching , all of my contacts were there, and everything else I needed.
The only thing I'm missing is the pictures that I took with the old phone.
I don't want to dump everything from the old phone on my new one, just the camera roll. Is this possible?
The old backup is still on my PC.

This application might help you: http://www.reincubate.com/labs/iphone-backup-extractor-how-extract-files-iphone- backup-windows/#/res/i/labs/iphonebe/3_wizard.png
When you get them back you might want to consider transferring them to your PC and then selecting the ones you really want to sync back to your phone. See this: Improve iPhone backup time by reducing the Camera Roll, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3603

  • Restoring new iPad 2 from iPhone backup?

Can I easily make my iPad 2 have same folder structure as my iPhone 4?  I just got iPad 2 and tried to "Restore from Backup" from my iPhone 4, however, the folder structure was completely lost.  Apps are on iPad, but not organized into my folders like my iPhone 4.  Also, my links to websites that were on my Home Screens are also missing completely.  It seems tedious to have to manually re-create everything I have done on my iPhone.  Also, are there any disadvantages of restoring from the Backup of an iPhone?  Have I messed up somethin

What if you get the "iPhone couldn't restore due to corruption"? That might be because of a difference in the iOS or simple because the previous backup process wasn't fully successful. Then I might recommend you to take a look at the iPhone Backup Extractor. Also I would love to see you picking up such a subject, how we can deal with corrupt backups. Cheers!

  • New iPhone Backup icon positions?

    Hi Everybody,
    thanks for reading.
I have a question about the way to use iTunes/iPhone backup in the most efficient way.
Every time I buy a new iPhone and have to put everything I had in the old one in the new one, I am experiencing the following issue.
These are the steps I usually follow:
    1) connect the new iPhone to my MAC;
    2) when iTunes recognizes it, i select the option to recover from the previous iPhone backup;
    3) I let it perform the backup;
    4) I select all the applications/videos/photos... etc I want to sync with my iPhone and start the sync.
Result: everything is fine except the positions/locations/order... of the icon applications. I mean everything is fine, up and running but the positions of them is not maintained, since I suppose app is not part of the backup.
For this reason, after the backup, i need some hours to order them again manually, since they are more then 300.
Is there something I am missing or is this a limitation of Apple Backup?
    Thanks, cheers.
    Luca

Some users have reported that restoring from backup twice in a row-before that first sync-preserves app folders/location.

  • HT201269 itunes cannot see my iphone backup.  I have a backup of the backup on an external HD, but even tech support cannot figure this one out.  I copy and paste backups into the correct folder but itunes still does not see it.  All I need are my contact

Sorry for short novel I am writing.  I just wanted to cover as much backround as possible.
So, here it goes.  I backed up my iphone 4 after renting a movie.  The movie only played the starting credits before I was called on for daddy duty.  A few days later the movie would not play, so I restored my phone from my backup.  The movie would still would not play so itunes support refunded my purchase and ended my viewing privileges for that rental after verifying that I had not viewed the movie.  I then had a problem with my contacts showing up twice in the contacts list after the restore.  So I attempted another restore.  All was well at this point.  I then started having trouble with my pc and decided to copy the internal drive to an external source.  A week later I had a system failure and did a factory restore on my computer.  I re-installed itunes and tried to copy and paste the old backup into the new itunes.  Now itunes just flat out does not see the backup file (I failed to mention that I did a factory reset on the iphone after the last backup, hopping to start fresh).  Tech support had me uninstall and re-install itunes and then copy and paste the old backup into the newly installed itunes with no luck.  The files are all there, but itunes just doesn't see them (itunes says the device has not been backed up to the cloud or to the local machine).  We then tried backing up the factory restored iphone and replacing that restore file with one of my old backups on the external drive.  Ok, this is where it gets weird.  We replaced the guts of the folder but left the folder itself so itunes would continue to recognize the new backup folder with the old files.  Whoohoo, itunes now see's a backup folder full of old files, or so we thought.  The new files were deleted using shift delete so they would be gone for good and not mix with any files or folders.  When I restore my phone, it restores the files that were deleted from the restore file (pause here for a moment and imagine the stupid look on the face of tech support and I while we silently wonder how files that were permanently deleted were restored).  This left tech support and I both scratching our heads.  My service issue was escalated to the next level.  I waited for the phone call the next day that was scheduled at 10am to my wife's phone, but the call never came through.  As usual, apple disappoints again.  I just bought an iphone 5s and still have the iphone 4, and am looking for a solution to retrieve my contacts and restore to the 4 or 5s.  I am guessing that files in other folders must be associated with the iphone backup in order for itunes to retrieve the files.  Any ideas or support in retrieving my contacts would be greatly appreciated.

  • How to us iPhone backup file from Time Machine drive to restore iPhone

Stupidly, I deleted my primary account on my iPhone that contained my contacts and calendar. I don't currently subscribe to MobileMe. I took advantage of the free service when I bought my phone, but decided not to subscribe as I synch my iPhone to my computer and back up my computer using a hard drive connected with Time Machine. Unfortunately, when I stopped using MobileMe, a synch to my iTunes wiped out all my contact data in my Address Book on my computer and my calendar. Therefore, all my most current information was on my iPhone.
I went to the Apple store and was told that the iTunes backup file may be used to restore the contacts and calendar information on my iPhone. I synched my iPhone to iTunes and then did the iPhone restore to factory settings. Only then did I realize that the older, correct backup file was not an available option in the dropdown.
So, I'm trying to figure out how to pull an older iPhone backup file and then use it to restore the iPhone. The only thing is that when I go to Time Machine and look at an older Library --> Application Support --> Mobile Sync --> Backup folder, there's a whole bunch of .mdbackup files in there.
How do I select what I need? How do I get the iTunes protocol to run the restore on my iPhone using those files?

Select the folder that contains the .mdbackup files and use Get Info for the folder to check the date the backup was updated. I would forget about trying to extract individual .mdbackup files and transfer the entire folder to the same location on your computer's hard drive - with iTunes quit before doing so.
After doing so, this backup should be available to select when restoring your iPhone from your iPhone's backup.
If this is successful restoring contact info and calendar events on your iPhone, if the Address Book and iCal on your Mac is empty - it does not contain any data, before syncing your iPhone direct with the Address Book and iCal on your Mac, enter one unique contact in the Address Book, and one calendar event in iCal on your Mac. Make these up if needed, which can be deleted later. This will provide a merge prompt when syncing this data, which you want to select.
Does Time Machine include a backup of your Address Book and iCal on your Mac? If so, it will be much easier and faster to restore the Address Book and iCal on your Mac from your Time Machine backup.

  • Does iTunes/iPhone Backup backup Application settings?

    Hi guys,
it happened to me to buy a new MAC and transferring my purchased Application to the new computer via my iPhone; it happened to me to buy a new iPhone and sync my iTunes with it... in both cases I kept my Apps setting.
The question is: does the iPhone backup perform this or did I keep the seeting only because the Apps where stored in one of the two devices?
In other words, let's consider the scenario where I have both a new iPhone and a new MAC, everything lost, only my iPhone backup and applestore id and password available.
Is there a way to get in my iTunes all the purchased applications or have I to manually download one by one (even if I know it'll be for free)... ??
And after this operation, what about my application settings??
    Thank you.

  • Can't restore individual iPhone backup file via Time Machine

    Hello,
I was hoping someone here might be able to assist me. I seem to have lost my iPhone backup file, but when I access the backup files in time capsule under user, in library under mobilesync, I can't even make it that far in time capsule, all I get to is a sparse image file of the username, is there a way I can access these files without a complete restore?
    Thanks!

If you mean you're using the Finder, that's not how to restore from Time Machine.

  • How can I restore an old iPhone backup from Time Machine?

    Hi there,
I lost my iPhone 4S but have a extra iPhone 4 (used for travel) that I would like to restore the 4S backup to.
The problem is that the backup of my 4S has somehow disappeared from itunes and the only one that shows up is the iPhone 4 backup even though they are set up as different devices with different names. I know that the backup for my 4S is included with my Time Machine backups (on external harddrive) but I can't find the files. Also very strange is that I don't have the folder "MobileSync" in /Library/Application Support/MobileSync on my computer. I can't find that folder anywhere.
My computer is less that 6 months old and I know that I have not deleted that folder or any other that are preinstalled.
I'm using OS X 10.9.4 and I don't want to restore my hole computer from Time Machine, just the files that hold my 4S backup.
Also note that I have not backed up everything from my 4S phone to iClould so that's not an option.
    I've tried everything including:
    - Restoring the settings on the iPhone 4 to factory settings and then connecting to itunes.
    - Deleting itunes and restoring it from Time Machine at a date that i knew had the original iphone backup.
Who ever can solve this for me deserves a gold medal. I'm truly desperate. I've searched all forums and haven't found a solution for this.
    Thanks.

    Correct.
You need to go to ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/.
The ~ indicates your User folder not the top level /Library/ folder.
Click on the desktop, then hold Option and go to Finder menu Go and Library will be there (only when holding Option as it is hidden).
