Missing iTunes, iBooks, and iPhoto content on new hard drive

I recently bought an SSD hard drive from Crucial and had Geek Squad install it on my Macbook Pro. They also partitioned/formatted the hard drive and installed Yosemite. All good.
Since they wanted an extra $130 to add my apps, I decided to do that part myself. I had been backing up the old hard drive to an external WD hard drive via Time Machine.
I was able to add all my apps and they work perfectly.
BUT there are a few very important things missing:
     Much of my iTunes Library (none of my playlists appear; none of the items I imported from CDs; none of my MP3's of lectures and things like that);
     Most of my photos and all of my albums from iPhoto. (Only very recent photos appear; all of my albums are gone);
All of my iBooks (but oddly, the collection names appear; when I open a collection, however, there is nothing in it.)
WHAT I HAVE (which ostensibly contains all this info in some form, but which I'm not sure how to transfer to my laptop):
My iTunes content and iBooks are all present on my iPhone and iPad mini, but when I connected them and selected to sync these items I received a warning message: items synced from other iTunes libraries will be removed and items will be synced from ‘this’ iTunes library. Problem is, ‘this’ iTunes library, which is ostensibly mine and which is associated with my correct Apple ID, no longer contains 3/4 of my stuff.
My external hard drive and the Time Machine backups. This was originally set up at an Apple store for me and I asked them to set it up to back up everything, so hopefully...
I still have my old hard drive Geek Squad removed from my computer.
What is the best/easiest way for me to retrieve all these items? I read some instructions for entering Time Machine backups and restoring files, but honestly once I got in there I didn't feel too confident. The article presumed you would know how to navigate to the correct file. I don't even really understand where my missing items would be.
If I should post this in a different forum, please let me know.
Any help is appreciated.

  • Can I put iTunes library and iPhoto albums on external hard drive?

How can I, if there is a way put my iTunes library and iPhoto albums on my external hard drive to free up space on my internal hard drive? If this can be done what are possible issues and do I just access them through my external drive when I need them. Can I sync my iPod to the external drive in order to deal with daily pod casts etc?

If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc.  you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod.  I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.

  • We have a 4 year old iMac 24 inch.  My hard drive died and we have a new hard drive now, but all that the fixit shop put on it was the Snow Leopard OS;  can I ask Apple for a download of our other many software programs to reload them?  Does it cost to do

We have a 4 year old iMac 24 inch.  The hard drive died and we had a new hard drive installed.  They only installed the Snow Leopard OS on it, and there were many software programs that came with the iMac originally.. now missing.  Does anyone know whether Apple will resupply these?  I do have an Apple installation disc but have upgraded from the original Leopard to Snow Leopard... so the OS is not quite the same.  Ideas?  Thanks!

No bootable bakup/clone or Time Machine backup? No initial install discs? If no to both of those, call 1-800-MY-APPLE and request replacement discs for that machine. They're available for a nominal S&H charge.

  • I had to get my hard drive replaced from Apple, I lost all of my music obviously.  My question is, how can I get all my music off of my iPhone onto iTunes?  Since it's a new hard drive, the iPhone isn't recognizing this as it's home computer.

You will need to use third-party software to transfer music from your phone to the iTunes Library. I recommend Phone to Mac - Pod to Mac | Macroplant.com.

  • IPhoto events and pictures missing from iPhoto after restoring new hard drive and upgrade to iLife11

My iPhoto events and pictures are ALL missing from my iPhoto Library after I tried restoring my programs on a new hard drive AND upgrading to iLife11!  Over the last few months, I upgraded my 2008 Macbook Pro's hard drive from a 250 GB to a 500 GB hard drive and since then have been manually installing and restoring programs and software.  I decided to do things manually because I had problems with doing Time Machine backups/restores in the past, so before I upgraded the drive, I manually saved everything to a Western Digital MyStudio 1 TB hard drive that I had just for the purposes of a second back up.  Anyway, I tried importing the pictures onto the new library, but couldn't find the hard copies at first, so that didn't work.  I then tried deleting the iPhoto Library that came with new operating system, then copying my old backup onto the new hard drive...that didn't work either.  However, when I right clicked on the iPhoto Library icon on my external hard drive (the original) and clicked on "show package contents," the folder not only contained the originals, but they were still organized by year and event just as I had them originally!
So, then I thought "why don't I try just importing the pictures directly into the new iPhoto Library!"
I tested it out, and sure enough, it worked!  I then tried importing an entire folder (which, was actually the name of the event), and again it worked!  So, I literally clicked and dragged my entire 2007-2009 library of pictures (which was about 35 GB) back into my iPhoto Library!  AND, this only took about 30 minutes to download, enough time for me to write this post and the following instructions to Recap:
              1. Open your new iPhoto Library
              2. Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
              3. Click on "Show Package Contents"
              4. Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
              5. Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
              6. DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reaseon, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
I assume this could work on other iLife programs, but luckily I have MobileMe and my iCalendar updated itself, though I did have to do some tweeking...
Hope this helps other people out, GOOD LUCK!

I'm re-posting the answer to this problem so I can show it has been answered:
    Open your new iPhoto Library
Go to wherever your ORIGINAL iPhoto Library is saved/backed up, then Right-click (or Control click) on the iPhoto icon
    Click on "Show Package Contents"
Go to the folder called "Originals" or "Master"
Click and drag everything INSIDE the folder (not the folder itself) to your new iPhoto Library
DO NOT try Importing from inside iPhoto!  For some reason, iPhoto can't see these images, but I promise, they're there!
              GOOD LUCK!!!

  • Transfering itunes and music to a new hard drive

A little background on my situation before I get to my question. I recently upgraded my desktop and before trading out hard drives I saved my itunes folder -including all of my music, to a flash drive. I opened up the flash drive once I installed the new hard drive and downloaded the itunes information onto it. Whenever I open up itunes now it shows all of my music, but I get a message that says, "song cannot be played because the original file cannot be found." My question is this: How do I get around this issue, how can I make itunes recognize that these are the original files from a previous hard drive?
Thanks for any help that is provided.

It would make more sense to move your whole home folder.
    1. WARNING: This procedure is for advanced users only. Some third-party software may not work as expected, or may not work at all, if the home folder is moved.
    2. Back up all data. Do not proceed unless you know how to undo these steps without having to ask for help. This website is not a support portal; it's a discussion forum. Don't assume that someone will help you if you get into trouble.
    3. If you do this wrong, you could end up with a bricked machine and no way to recover without losing data.
    4. Copy your home folder to the desired location, which must be on a volume of type "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with file ownership enabled, as shown in the Finder Info dialog. Encryption is optional. The volume must be on a local storage device, not on the network, and it must be mounted automatically at startup — before any user logs in. A disk image will not work.
The name of your home folder is your short user name. Do not rename it. Do not copy the "Users" folder.
    5. Select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Users & Groups
Click the lock icon and authenticate. Right-click or control-click your name in the account list, and select Advanced options from the popup menu. In the sheet that opens, change the location of the home directory. Log out and log back in.
    6. Test. If you have problems, reverse the above steps. If you got this far, you should have no trouble doing that. If everything works as you expect, delete the original home folder.

  • Having trouble with error message in itunes every since I had a new hard drive installed. Write access are not enough or permissions aren't allowed.  I have changed all of these in the corresponding folders, restarted and nothing works.  I need help bad??

Got a new hard drive installed and since then, I cannot get purchased song into my itunes.  It is telling me that my write access or permission are wrong.  I have changed all and nothing works.  HELP!!!!!!

This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

  • Problems with copying iPhoto library onto new hard drive from external HELP

I had to get a new hard drive installed onto my MacBook Pro, but was able to copy my iPhoto library onto my external hard drive via another computer before the old hard drive failed. Now, I am trying to copy that library back onto my MacBook.
After I copied the library onto the MacBook, when iPhoto was opened, it showed no photos but I could see album titles. Then when I opened iPhoto while holding down the option key, it was all clumped into one event and not nearly all of the photos were there. Also, I have right-clicked on the library to see package contents and everything seems to be there, but I don't know how to make it all show up in the library.
I've downloaded iPhoto Library Manager because I thought that might help (but haven't used it yet -- don't know how) and I just need some help to recover my iPhoto library... and is there a way to restore all the separate events imported and time/date stamps, in order to get all the photos in chronological order?

Should I just go through the iPhoto Library package contents and drag every folder into iPhoto?
No. That will get you massive duplication.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
    Regards
    TD

  • Itunes won't play library on new hard drive

I had to install new hard drive.  Moved all itunes files over including library.  Downloaded latest version of Itunes, but it won't play any of my music.

This is relevant portion of the support document with a bit of editing for clarity.
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
Using a Mac click the icon to open iTunes and immediately press and continue to hold down the Option key.
You should see the following screen:
If iTunes opens normally, close it and try again.
Once you've got that dialog you have two options. If your previous iTunes library database is stored on the external drive use Choose Library to browse to it and open it. If you only have the media folder on the drive then use the Create Library option to create a new iTunes library at /iTunes on the external, move the media folder to /iTunes/iTunes Media and then add it to your new empty library.
