Missing Links (IDCS2 to CS4-MAC)

Hello all,
I know that this has been discussed earlier in details (http://forums.adobe.com/message/3007065#3007065) but I am curious to know if anybody has got way out for this.
We are moving all our CS2 covers to CS4 and as for the known issue as soon as we open CS2 templates in CS4, get the missing graphic liks errors. I tried to opening CS2 files in CS3 =>exporting as INX =>open in CS4 but of no good and still getting the same dialog box.
I also tried did CS2 documents=>open in CS4=>Update links (Manually)=>save as CS4 indd. But it still shows me missing the links as soon I reopen the same file. To my surprise, if I don't get the link error after reopening files in some cases it still gives the link error if trying it opening in other MAC.
AAAARGH. We have 100s of covers created in CS2, which we now have to move to CS4 but this issue/bug is becoming a real pain. I know many of forums have gone thru this situation and will appreciate if anybody suggest the best solution for this or the way one has adopted to minimize the rework or even whether it is worth trying.
Not tested yet but changing the path (file:///Volumes/......) in INX file with text editor and opening it in CS4 will work?
Any suggestions in this regard will be highly appreciated.
TIA,
Pankaj

The previews are written into the ID file, whcih is why they are still there even though ID can't find the linked file. Genereally, these previews are smaller and of lower quality (becasue that's all you need for the screen) than the actual image that will be used for output. This is how the size of the file is kept small and workable.
You CAN embed a linked image after you place it, but not if the link is already missing. Nor do I recoomend it. The advantages of linking far outweigh the "convenience" of embedding. You can use a single image multiple times in many documents, and if it needs modification you do it once and it updates everywhere. You'd have to unembed and update each instance if it is not linked, then re-embed. The safest way to move files is to package them, or to be sure that any linked files will remain available in the current locations after the move. If you truly no longer have access to the original images you are out of luck.

  • Missing Link on CS5 on Mac osX

    Hi All
Nowadays, I'm facing a well known issue but not able to figue it out, is image link which are fine on windows but open same file on Mac osX truns on links missing.
Path we do use cosists only forward slashes(/).
Also, I think issue would have discussed on forum but I am not able to search forum for any issue and owner had unable search field also.
So could some one guide me to search forum for issues. This would be a great help for everyone who would be searching forum.
    Mac

Yes, Mark we are using 7.0.3 on both platforms.
I'm not able to post screen shot for sample.
Yes, I am using URI path(forward-slash) in my script but when I see link info in Link panel it shows windows specific path only.
How can I change this after importing into document.
Sorry... I'm not able to reach what does the mean of javascript tool guide statement
If your application will run on multiple platforms, use relative path names, or try to originate path names
from the home directory. If that is not possible, work with Mac OS X and UNIX aliases, and store your files
on a machine that is remote to your Windows machine so that you can use UNC names.
As an example, suppose you use the UNIX machine myServer for data storage. If you set up an alias share
in the root directory of myServer, and if you set up a Windows-accessible share at share pointing to the
same data location, the path name //myServer/share/file would work for all three platforms.
Could you make it more clear.

  • CS4 Missing Links Between Two Users

Thanks in advance for any help.
We've recently switched to a new InCopy workflow where we're hosting the assignment and links files in Dropbox. We've had no isses with our editors making edits in InCopy, but my co-designer and I are running into missing links problems when opening .indd files the other worked on. My machine also has InCopy, and the .icma files open without issue, but the .indd files always have missing links.
We have found one solution, which is hosting the .indd files on Dropbox as well. But we're hoping we can resolve this w/o having to do that, b/c it may push us past the "free" limit in Dropbox and force us to pay.
We're in a Mac platform (both on 10.6.3) and are using InDesign and InCopy CS4 (both 6.0.4).

All the files are on the computer, right, not external drives? And all the accounts you want to share between can Share their Libraries AND Look for Shared Libraries? And iTunes is running in each user account?
I have to say I've never used this WITHOUT an internet connection as I have 'always on' broadband, but I cannot imagine why it would need a network when it's between users on the same computer.

  • [CS4 WinXP] InDesign crashes on opening docs with missing links

    Hi,
I expect this issue is more to do with the PC than InDesign itself but I would be interested to know if anyone else has seen a similar problem (and been able to resolve it).
The design team in my office have just been given new HP Compaq PCs with CS4 (inc. InDesign 6.0.4). When these designers attempt to open certain InDesign documents, their InDesign will crash with no warnings or dialogues. The same documents can be opened on other (older) PCs without crashing.
The documents which crash all contain links to graphics on a network which is not available. The same document will open on older PCs but will obviously report missing links. The network is not available to the older PCs either. The older PCs are also running InDesign CS4 (6.0.4).
If the failing documents are opened on older PCs and the links removed, these can then be opened on the new PCs with no issues.
As I said, I expect this is a PC/Networking issue rather than InDesign itself but any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Simon Kemp

Try changing the preferences regarding checking links on open, and also using a workspace that doesn't include the links panel or preflight. That might be enough to get the files to open, and exporting to .idml or .inx and resaving might solve th problem (for that matter, it wouldn't hurt to export one from the older machine and see if that will open).

  • CS4 InD - copy/paste missing link names?

Hi, in CS3 if I had a missing link I could simply go to the links palette, highlight and copy the name, click relink then when the dialogue box came up just paste in the file name for searching. This seems to have disappeared in CS4 and I can't see any way of copying the file name.
Anyone got any ideas without having to re-type the filename out to search? I don't want to have a massive links pallette so I can see the long file names we have, so the copy/paste solution was our best option previously.
Any help gratefully received, many thanks

Cheers Eugene, it's not quite the same as it gives the 'full path' as the name suggests.
This method thus throws in an extra part to the sequence as you have to delete the majority of the path, which is a shame - it just sort of worked and made sense before.

  • InDesign Cs4 Missing Links

SO i have been reading around this discussion forum and havent quite found the answer im looking for.
I am not very familiar with InDesign. Ultimatly someone made a webpage for us and i want to be able to transfer it over to Dreamweaver..which i am very familiar with.
I have the file already designed. All files are on the local machine.
WHen i open the file up, this is the error message i get:
This Document contains 19 missing links to sources that are missing. You Can find or relink the missing links using the links panel.
    My question is this:
    1) is there a way to identify which links are missing?
    2) where is the links panel on the menu bar?
Thanks for your help and Patience.
I will admit, i am very much a amature with InDesign

The names of the missing links will be listed in the links panel, which you'll find by Window > Links.
If you really do have the files, you'll have to select them in the links panel and relink, directing ID to the correct location.

  • MAC, CS2: File server migration problem/Missing Link/auto remap behavior.

    Hi,
I'm just leaving a quite "trace" in case someone else get in similar problems and do a search of the forum, it's very technical and i'm also missing some information, so i wont make a special effort to make it easier to understand.
We did a migration of a project from a OSX desktop station used as a server to a real OSX server (same root volume name, exact replication of the folders). Many of links in the indesign documents (not all) are missing.
After trying a few things, including inspecting the links in a .inx export, i have discovered that the remapping mecanism (when a link is missing) doesnt work the same depending of the OSX version (maybe related to afp version?) and also depending of the Indesign version used.
One of the case we have is a filepath that is encoded (in the inx file) using a "~sep~" in replacement of "_" (underscore) (documented, but very briefly in the inx specs documentation). It looks like the file was imported from a folder that was named "01_test" by exemple and later renamed "01-test" without doing the update in the indesign files.
On our "old" serveur, the link with such encoded char is resolved without any error/warning (just like "_" would be the same as "-"), but on our new serveur the link are reported as missing. I did the same test using CS3 and the links are reported as missing using the old and new serveur.
The new behavior of CS3 is better as it report adequately the change in filename (containing "-" instead of "_") instead of having a automatic remap (not working the same way accross different version of OSX) and also no commiting the change to the document (the remapping is not stored with the resolved link, the original link with "~sep~" is kept. One last odd behavior is that if we relink one path in a document, all the other links are resolved (on the new server) at document opening.. but if we unmount/remount the volume (restart indesign?), the link are still missing...
I'm missing some information on the expected behavior of indesing missing link automatic correction, also related to afp version (spotlight indexing could be involved??).
Currently i'm doing a log output of all the missing link to have a complete picture of the problem (in case the are other problems not related to the "_" and "-" in path name).
    Eric

My apologies about the wall of text. After I made my original post, I thought maybe it would better to go back and put it in a pastebin instead. I was not able to edit that post once I sent it.
In regards to your question, the  permissions on the
/Library/LaunchAgents/com.adobe.AAM.Updater-1.0.plist file is "read and write" for system, wheel and everyone.

  • Video Filter missing:  AE.ADBE Fast Blur - Premiere Pro CS4 mac

Hi, I own the master collection package of the cs4 products for Mac, and I'm having this problem when trying to open a project made on premiere pro 1,5 (win). All files, effects and tittles where imported perfectly on my Mac after opening and saving the project on win premiere cs3. The only problem is the fast blur plugin. I get this error when opening the project on premiere cs4. I need to have the fast blur plugin working because I don't want to re-create the whole transitions of this 1 hr length project.
I tried copying the Fast_Blur.plugin from after effects and pasting it on my premiere pro plug-ins folder (/Applications/Adobe Premiere Pro CS4/Plug-ins) but with no luck, apparently premiere ignores it. Also tried to copy it to /Applications/Adobe Premiere Pro CS4/Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.app/Contents/Plug-ins/Common but this gave me several errors and the application not launching.
What can I do to use this plugin in premiere cs4 Mac?
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Placed the afx cs4 Fast_Blur.plugin on /Applications/Adobe Premiere Pro CS4/Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.app/Contents/Frameworks/MediaCoreUI.framework/Fast_Blur.pluginand nothing... ignored as when placing it on Plug-Ins folder...
Where is this mediacore folder on win?
Thanks for the suggestion, but I think that the Mac CS4 afx "Fast_Blur.plugin" isn't comptible with the Mac CS4 Premiere.
I don't own a CS3 mac version... does anyone knows if it has the fast blur? I could try to use that file...

  • Font issues & Missing Links

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on the issue of fonts & missing links!?
Basically, when we create a document in Indesign using Mac 1, and save it on the server (for someone else to open) , When the user on Mac 2 opens it the font and the pictures are missing! Even though,  all the same fonts installed on each machine and the pictures are all on our server stored in the same place and not been moved / modified since placing it on the page!
Its only happening on one Mac - we have reinstalled CS4 and still no improvement!
To me, it seems a mystery, but I am sure there is an explanation somewhere!!
    HELP!
    Thanks,
    Fiona

You bet. I've checked and double-checked. What is really wierd is that I can open another In Design document that is using the same font, and it is perfectly ok.

  • Missing Links in InDesign CS3

We are using InDesign CS3 and the program itself works good, the problem I'm having is all our data is located on a server and I have replaced the server with a new one, now when we open a document it has missing links and it takes forever searching for \\oldserver\pictures before popping up missing links where you then point it to \\newserver\pictures. My question is why does InDesign use the unc path and not mapped drive letters? Is there a way to fix this for future? Also is there anyway to fix previous short a fixing each and ever missing link? I see CS4 has the option to check links or not but I don't see any options for CS3. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tony

I'm not sure what that has to do with it? when opening up a documents it tries to resolve picture links the link pointing to \\oldserver\pictures (that server is no longer running) everything has been moved to \\newserver\pictures when the document finally opens you manually fix the links to point to new server save document then it opens fine the next time. I would rather have the links point to P:\Pictures as apposed to the unc path, the I wouldn't have this issue.

  • Missing Link Utility Missing In Action

Missing Link is a utility that allows you to open, run, or launch an application, file, or almost anything else on your Mac from a link or a bookmark in a browser. For example, one of your bookmarks in your Safari bookmarks bar could be "TextEdit" which would, when clicked on, open up the application TextEdit.
Unfortunately (for me, at least), though it worked fine in Panther, Missing Link will not work on my current hardware ... and I miss it so!
Anyone know of an equivalent thing available anywhere? I've done all the normal searches, of course, and have turned up nothing.
Thanks for whatever help you can offer.

  • Issue with missing links dialogue box

When I open up an InDesign document that I've been working on recently several times a dialogue box has opened up asking to update missing links - all the links to image files are on an external drive connected to my Mac and none of them have been updated or altered in anyway or moved, all the links are correct and in place when the document was saved yesterday evening on my Mac's desktop so has anyone any idea why this message comes up? It doesn't happen every day but has happened quite a number of days, the list of links that need updating varies as well from as low as say 9 up to 248 which is nearly all the images in the document and it's a bit of a pain having to go through the document turning clipping paths off then back on so the images display correctly again!
Whilst other people can and do access the external drive to access the image for their own documents they haven't changed or altered the images so there's no reason for them to show up as missing in InDesign, the external isn't turned off at night or during the day or unmounted at all either. The file was originally a Quark file converted into an InDesign one via Markzware's software, that apart I can't think of any reason why this message appears often? Anyone any ideas about it?
    TIA

anyone got any other ideas about why some of the picture links are being listed as modified? It's an exceptionally annoying quirk, for the last 7 days the links on a 40 page catalogue the links were all fine, this morning however on opening the document it listed over 100 of the images as modified when nothing has been done to them.
When I actually update the picture links in the links palette, in the details panel for the picture the modification date does not change after updating the links, it's the date that it was placed that does change - not sure if this will be of any help in trying to solve whatever's causing this issue, as mentioned above it's exceptionally irritating that it happens and is something that's putting other people off using InDesign over Quark as Quark doesn't seem to suffer this problem, and it would be worse if it happened on some of the other catalogues we do as they're 80 - 100 pages in size!

  • Printing InDesign to PDF with missing links

I received a document with lots of missing links for images (and I don't have access to those images)
    - but when I printed it to a PDF the images are all there - how can this be?  - not that I'm complaining when something works - but need to understand why it worked.  Thanks for any help

If it looks like the stop sign with the ? of doom you are just printing the proxy. If it looks like the Mac PICT icon it is embedded. If there is nothing it is linked and useable. One can generally export a pdf regardless of whether it is the best idea.
There is a 4th type of way to put an image in that doesn't show anywhere, though I'm not aware of how that works in terms or breakage. That's likely what you are getting from Word. It is not best practices as it can lead to file corruption when document bloat gets too big, but in small doses where nothing is color critical it isn't gonna hurt anything.
