Missing Mail application

A previous employer of ours somehow deleted the mail application on our Macmini. I probably already know the answer to this, but in case I'm wrong, does anyone know of a way to attain the mail app. without the installation CD?

In Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger), some of the applications included with the system can be reinstalled without using a third-party utility. You can reinstall Mail as described in the second part of the following article:
Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4
Note that Mail may appear grayed out in the installer, but will be checked if you check Applications there, and will be installed if Mail has been removed from the /Applications/ folder.
If the version of the system software on the Install discs is earlier than what you’re running now (and only in that case), then you must also reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re running, to bring Mail back in sync with the rest of the system:

Thanks Paul; but, taking your suggestion didn't solve the problem.  As mail is part of the OS, the updates don't have the capacity to reinstall applications; so, I had to reinstall the OS.  I now have my mail back (although it didn't appear on the dock--I had to go to applications and activate it and then put it back in the dock.  Thanks again for trying.

This error occurs when the device unexpectedly loses its USB connection with iTunes. This can occur if the device is manually disconnected during the restore process. This issue can be resolved by performing USB troubleshooting, using a different USB dock-connector cable, trying another USB port, restoring on another computer, or by eliminating conflicts from third-party security software.
See if the iPad will boot up this way.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Mail application is missing

Double clicking Mail icon in dock results in a ?mark appearing and the application does not open. When I search applications there is no folder for Mail. My previously received email seems to be filed in my library, but I can not open these without the Mail application. Everything was working fine before I went away. Upon my return I tried to check email, but couldn't open application.
I have reloaded Leopard but doesn't add Mail application.

How to Use Pacifist to Replace Deleted OS X Applications
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
    B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
    C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder.
In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.
    • Click on the "Go" button .....
    • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
    20 files were scanned.
20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk.
0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package.
0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
    8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears, authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
    9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
    10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
    11. Type in your password, click “OK”
    • Pacifist will begin to extract files.
    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes.....
    • Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
    Stop
    Leave original alone
    Update ..... Default selection
Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages

  • After OSX Updgrade and Restart, Can't Open Mail Application

The icon in the Dock has changed. It is now a stack of two white sheets of paper with a paintbrush, ruler, and penicil on them. When I click on it, it bounces once, and nothing opens.

    Thanks.

It looks like you didn't install the latest updates properly. Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, and no applications should be running while installing it.

  • Can't recover lost Mail application

My mail application (software) mysteriously vanished, and I can't find a way to recover it. I'm not aware that I did anything to cause this. One minute it was working fine, then a short while later Mail would not launch. Search of the directory fails to locate any Mail application program, although as far as I can tell all the other Mail files are still there (saved mail, settings, etc.). I've been using OS X 10.2.8 for many months, and reloading it doesn't help. My original program discs are 10.1, so no help. Running TechTool Deluxe and Apple Hardware Test discs from my extended warranty (now expired) don't reveal any problems. Also ran Yasu 1.0.3, which did return the following error message---

Hi thomacl, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You posted in the wrong forum for 10.2, this is the Tiger forum but I think I can help you.
You may be able to repair this with the10.2.8 Stand Alone Combo Update It would be the easiest way.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Repair Disk before update and repair permissions before and after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

  • How do I get latest Mail application

How do I get latest Mail application to work on OS 10.6.8?

Somehow you have the incorrect version of Mail installed on the computer. So, here's what I suggest your do:
First, you want to put the copy of Mail that's in your Applications folder into the Trash. Locate your Snow Leopard DVD and insert it into your optical drive. Use the following procedure to install
How Restore Deleted or Missing OS X Components
A few of the basic OS X installed applications can be restored from the Optional Installs installer located in the Optional installs folder on your Installer DVD.
Reinstall Mail from the Snow Leopard DVD then download and reinstall the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 updater. This should fix you right up.

  • Mac Mail application won't open since installing Leopard

    Hi Folks,
This is my first post - I have usually been able to locate the help I need just by searching through the discussions, but haven't found anything on this issue (hope I didn't miss it). Since installing Leopard on my MacBook (2 GHz, Intel Core 2 Duo, 80 GB HD) I cannot open the email app. (Mac Mail). The error message I get is: "+you cannot use the application "mail" with this version of Mac OS X+". Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks!

If you had the Mail Application stored in any other directory (folder) than the root Applications Folder, you will get this error message because Leopard installs a new Mail Application in the Applications folder.
Delete your old Mail Application from its current locations, and from the dock, and run the newly installed Mail Application in the Applications Folder and you should be fine.
This is also true for several other Applications that are installed new in Leopard. I don't know them all, but you will when you run them and get the same error message.
Good luck. Hope this fixes your problem.

  • Mail application hangs at start

Hi, hoping for some help.  This morning my mail application stopped responding.
The application launched, but never got any further than the Inbox window.  The application did not respond to mouse or keyboard, and I had to force quit to exit.  The application worked fine at COB Friday, but I had recently added a new gmail account.  I tried a number of thing to fix it:
    1) restoring the app from time machine
    no luck.
    2) restoring the plist from time machine
no luck, but after this, Time machine would not accept the restore of the App, error message read:
"Mail" can't be modified or deleted bacause it's required by Mac OS X.
    3) after a good root around posts, looked at the console
    possilby relevant messages were:
18/11/2013 08:47:53.847 Mail[351]: Unable to find message to restore.
    and
18/11/2013 14:05:38.246 System Preferences[292]: MailIAPlugin: Tried to get settings for nonexistent account with uid 28BC38EE-6DC5-45D6-9F9B-B31CFF725FA8
    and
    18/11/2013 14:45:31.270 sandboxd[281]: ([265]) Mail(265) deny file-read-data /Users
    4) the Activity Monitor, meanwhile is telling me that Mail is using 200% of the CPU (and my laptop is running REALLY painfully slowly)
    Ended up
    5)  deleting a POP account that seemed to have a conflict (when I looked in preferences/Mail, it couldn't see the account settings)
and 6) deleting the newly added gmail account.
doesn't sound like much but it between trying to work out what to do next, how to get at the accounts from outside Mail, and doing it, took me all **** day.
So now I have my email back up and working, and have put the POP account back in, no problem.  Restored the missing emails from Time Machine, all good (Heavens bless my new G-tech back up drive).
But the machine is still running really slowly and the fan is going crazy.
What is still wrong and how/where do I look?
Is it worth doing a complete restore or is that overkill?

I've reinstalled the firmware 4.60 , thus softreset ans restore, but no better.
    mail was opening and hanging.
wifi is working (even wpa security), so I choose to use the browser on gmail.
today, after removin the battery one minute, it starts without the e-mail icon...

  • Missing Mail subfolders

Help! I am missing several subfolders of a main folder in my mail. They are still there because I can find them when I do a search for specific info in a message. However, when I go to try to move them from my Mail Folder in my Library, I can't find my Mail folder! Does anyone know what my problem is or an easy way to bring back these subfolders so I can see them?

    Hello Trebad,
It sounds like you can't find the emails in the Mac Mail application unless you search for the message.  You may need to enable the side bar and expand the sections there to view the mailboxes you've created.  I would look here first and make sure the sections are expanded before looking in the Library folder.
Choose View > Show Sidebar or View > Hide Sidebar.
You can find the full article here:
Lion Mail: Show or hide the sidebar
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4885
When you were looking for the Mail folder in the Library, you may have been looking in the system Library folder instead of the user Library which stores the Mail folder.  You can find instructions in finding the user Library by following the steps in this article (it says Mountain Lion, but it's the same for Lion):
OS X Mountain Lion: What is the Library folder?
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11395
    I hope this helps!
    Best,
    Sheila M.
