Missing mail found by spotlight

I was trying to get into a protected web page when I realized I would have to reset my password. I entered the information on the page and dutifully went to mail to wait for the reset link to arrive. After several minutes and a prior knowledge that the email typically arrives by the time window I had allowed I went back to the web page, performed the "I didnt get the mail" procedure and went back to mail. I had performed several "Get all mail" keystrokes but nothing. So on a whim I entered the web page name in the spotlight upper left window of the mail app and wha la! there the 2 missing emails turned up in the proper mail box, unopened. Ive checked filters, none were set up, I checked spam but they werent in there either. The only way I can get the emails to display is by typing a part of the email title in spotlight. So what gives??????????

  • Mail not found in Spotlight / Mail not backuped in Time Machine

On my OS X Lion Server 10.7.2 (on Mac OS X Server Mini), I am unable to search for any mail of the logged-on local user. Furthermore, no data from the Mail.app is saved in the Time Machine.
All other data can be found in Spotlight and all other data is backuped normally with Time Machine. The Mail.app works fine and is configured normally.

I think you have not placed mail.jar and activation.jar files in the /jre/lib/ext directory. Just place the mail.jar and activation.jar files in the jdk's /jre/lib/ext directory and check out. This will work for you.

  • Apple Mail Search and Spotlight do not work for locating email messages after upgrading to Lion 10.8.3.

Apple Mail Search and Spotlight do not work for locating email messages after upgrading to Lion 10.8.3 on my 27" iMac.
When searching in Apple Mail, sometimes a get a few results (with many missing), and sometimes no results at all.
I had absolutely no problems before with Snow Loepard.
I have reindexed mail and my startup drive. I have followed discussions regarding this matter and tried everything - a waste of time.
This is VERY serious for me - I have many thousands of messages that I archive and need to reference for work and clients, and now I cannot find them.

I found out that I needed a $100 mini displayport to dual-link dvi adapter to make my $30" cinema display work with my macbook pro
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A/mini-displayport-to-dual-link-dvi-ada pter?fnode=51
When I found out that solved the problem, I took it back because that was too expensive for a stupid adapter, and it still didn't work perfectly.

  • Help please - phone icon only found in spotlight - how do i get it back!

OK - so ,,,,I was moving my apps around to try get them organised and as i normally do i moved the 4 main apps off the bottom bar onto a page so i could then move icons onto the bottom bar to quickly move them to the new pages.... are you following me!
Well I then started moving apps around all over the place but when i went to look for my 4 apps (phone, ipd, safari and mail) on a screen i couldn't find them anywhere. They can be found in spotlight but my question is.....how do i get the app icons back onto a screen!
    Please someone help

If you have more than 180 apps, they won't all show on the screens. Try this:
Start by resetting the home screen layout: Choose Settings -> General -> Reset and tap Reset Home Screen Layout. That will put the original icons back in their original positions. The rest you have to move manually.
To get an icon to another page easily, with iPhone OS 3.0, you can drag the icon you want to move to the top right or top left corner of the page, and hold it there. The pages will keep flipping. When you've arrived to the page you want to add the app to, just move the icon away from the corner.

  • Exchange 2010 - missing mails moved by rules / strange problem

    Hello,
one of our users has a pretty strange problem.
First of all, he has 12 rules (11 server-sided plus default for removing categories) and a HUGE folder-tree for about 1.5 years.
    His tree looks like:
    Inbox
    -A
    --1
    --2
    ---a
    ---b
    --3 Newsletter
    --4
    -B
    --1
    --2
    --3 Newsletter
    --4
...and so on for 192 folders
    Other Stuff
    -A
    --1
    --2
... and so on for 80 folders
Since this week, he complains about missing mails.
While investigating this problem, everything looks fine at first. Mails are stored to his mailbox successfully.
Later we found out, that he has rules to move incoming mails to his "--3 Newsletter" folders depending on sender (and no further processing) and was looking for exactly those mails.
But the mails were not visible in the target folder and neither in the inbox folder.
Using the search function on inbox, I was not able to find the mails. After checking the box for all subfolders, the mail was found. Hovering the mail I was told, that it is in the target folder - where for sure it wasn't.
Opening the mail from the search result and clicking on [File], "Inbox" was displayed as the current folder.
After re-running the matching rule, the mails were visible in the target folder. This worked for yesterday. New mails were moved successfully.
And today, we have the very same problem again. And again, I can quick-fix it by re-running the rules.
As I can see and "fix" this on his machine and on my admin machine, this can't be any local problem.
Any hints or solutions for that?

Where can I see which RU this is?
Outlook on his machine is configured with cache-mode, Outlook on my admin machine is configured for online-mode only
The Rollup installed (if any) is not shown in EMC or EMS.

  • Missing mail from archive

Missing mail from keep & archive in hotmail . Ditto in archive & POP outlook ....disappears before my eyes .
has done for over a year

Did the folks or this person at the "genius bar" also recommend that you create or update your backup before performing an Archive & Install?
If not, a "genius" he ain't.
The mbox filing structure used with Tiger Mail is significantly different than the mbox filing structure used with previous Mail.app versions under Jaguar and Panther.
Tiger Mail stores each message contained in a mailbox as a separate file in .emix format located within the Messages folder for the mailbox. Although you can import Jaguar and Panther mailboxes to Tiger, the mbox format used with Tiger Mail is not backwards compatible or interchangeable with Jaguar or Panther Mail without taking an additional step first. The reason you are seeing the old messages available before and up until the time you upgraded to Tiger is because you didn't delete the left over content package files used by Panther Mail and one of these files contains all messages messages and message attachments which are not automatically deleted after the conversion process to the mbox format used with Tiger Mail is completed.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account). Within the account named folder is there an INBOX.mbox file and/or an INBOX.mbox named folder and the same for the other mailboxes (mboxes) within the account named folder?
Tiger Mail.app mboxes at the Finder level are folders and each folder contains a Messages folder which stores each message contained in the mailbox as a separate file in .emix format.
Jaguar and Panther Mail.app mboxes are .mbox files only, not a folder.

bug 278860: confusing "profile in use"/"already running" error when profile is missing (not found)
Apparently the profile .default is missing. Therefore the bug 278860 is activated and I can't start Firefox. Is there a solution?

I did some googling and found alot of topics from you on this issue, to me it simply seems like on of the connectors is broken or loose.

  • Missing mail after restoring mail profile folder

Hello,i had problems with my sent folder and had to restore my profile folder to a 3 day old copy, but after that my inbox is missing mail for 16 days, the mail is extremely important as it contains all my orders and working material and i need a way to recover it. Please help me! Right now there is no previous version of the folder to restore once i open its options, neither on the inbox file, what do i do now?

restored what and how is the first question. If your talking about windows restore I am out of here. That is a Microsoft mess I want nothing to do with.
The only constant I can suggest is right click the folder in Thunderbird, select properties and then the repair button to force a reindex of the mail store.

  • Mail searching without Spotlight?

Of course, Spotlight is what powers Mail's full text searches (i.e., searching the bodies of messages, not just the headers). But I find that Spotlight slows my system down noticeably, and prefer to leave it off (i.e., exclude my drives from its indexing). I don't really want to have to turn Spotlight on and let it do its full indexing, just so I can search for something in Mail once or twice a year.
Does anyone know of a third-party app (or other solution) that can search Mail messages without Spotlight being turned on?

Your spotlight shouldn't be slowing down your system. if it is, something is wrong with your installation and you should fix it rather than looking for spotlight alternatives.
anything not using an index will be dog slow or won't be able to search your files effectively. Things like EasyFind (doesn't use indexing) can search for filenames and text file contents but that's it. EasyFind won't search your mail messages though. anything using indexing will be slower than spotlight. you might try google desktop. I've never used it but I believe it uses its own index so it might be ok. Haven't heard of any other spotlight substitutes that use their own indexes.

  • Does anyone know how to copy mail messages found in spotlight to a folder?

I can select all, but the copy is grayed out.

Type the search criteria in Spotlight.
    Click "Show All".
Click "Kind" to arrange the results by kind, which will group all mail messages together.
Select them all and drag to the folder you want, holding the OPTION key. Otherwise you'll just move them.
Can you explain what are you trying to achieve?
There's a lot you can do inside Mail, separate messages by keywords, subject, sender etc. move them to separate folders... So maybe doing it in mail automatically would be a better option for you.

  • Missing  Mail  in OS 10.4.7

    Can anyone help?
Having been using OS 10.3.9 for some time now, a dn quite content to do so, I found myself having to upgrade to 10.4.7. in order to run Logic 7.2. Anyway, after having installed 10.4 and done several software updates everything seemed to be fine until I opened mail. For some reason mail has lost all my messages, both sent and received, since the begining of 2006. They were there yesterday under 10.3.9 but today the last message I have in any folder is dated 31.12.2005. Also in my sent messages folder all the messages read that "This message fron **** has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it." All my email accounts are POP3 accounts and are all online. Any ideas where my missing messages have gone and if and how I can retrieve them?
    Greatful for any assistance

    Hello,
Yes, I think we can help, and the messages are most likely not missing, but Mail is not yet able to display them. Since you have converted from an earlier version of Mail, you probably have issues arising out of leftover files, and conversion to Tiger and Mail 2.x.
I want you to read the article at the link below, and then perhaps get back to me with some observations, before attempting any changes:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301315
This issue of leftover files applies not only to mailboxes you have previously created (which are in the Mailboxes folder the article mentioned) but will also apply to those mailboxes in account folders created prior to the upgrade to Tiger.
In a pre-conversion to Tiger mailbox, the only file that really mattered, in regard to message content, was the file "mbox". In a mailbox properly created and established in Tiger, the only thing that really matters is the folder named Messages.
Thus, if you are able to compare the size of both the mbox file and the Messages folder, at the time of conversion (a mailbox trying to have it both ways), and they are approximately the same size, then you can reasonably conclude everything was converted. There are some very minor exceptions to this comparative analysis, but it basically holds.
The path to the Mail folder is Home/Library/Mail -- within the Mail folder are one or more account folders and the Mailboxes folder.
There are numerous topics about issues surrounding conversion of mailboxes to Tiger and Mail 2.x, from earlier versions. One of them -- the lengthy topic at the link below -- may also be of assistance, and deals with the Envelope Index to some extent:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=413196
This topic is particularly relevant if the mailboxes were large, and complex while used in 10.3 and Mail 1.3.
Let me know any questions. Post back here for specific instructions, and help after you have thoroughly investigated your Mail folder, and mailboxes, and the degree of conversion that may not have been completed.

  • Does Mail search use Spotlight?

In Apple Mail, the search functions work poorly for me. I can find things by the category "From," for example, but searching for something in the "Entire message" doesn't find things that are there.
Does Mail use Spotlight for its searches? I have disabled it because it slowed down my old iMac too much.

Yes, Mulder is right, Mail Uses Spotlight for the Entire Message search (but not the To, From or Subject).
I am also running on a flat panel G5 iMac and found that with a clean Spotlight Database, Spotlight really speeds up and makes searching in Mail invaluable.

Thanks Dave. I went to Betalogue and went through all the posts and I finally found a way to fix the Search Entire Message Spotlight problem in Apple Mail - at least it worked for me. I have been trying to fix this with all sorts of solutions for months and it turns out it was related to a problem with the Launch Services Database. I confirmed this by looking inside my user/library/mail folder and seeing that inside each Mailbox folder, the sub mailboxes all had standard folder icons and not the inbox tray style icons.
Note that you can easily fix this through Terminal Commands, and not all the following steps are completely necessary, but there are many people looking at these threads that want to just push buttons...
*== So here are my simple steps to fixing Apple Mail Search ==*
    1. Attach and turn on any external hard drives you have that may have a copy of Mail.app on them
    2. Delete all OLD copies of Mail.app that you can find (don't worry about Time Machine), but make sure you keep the latest version of Mail.app in your working Applications folder.
~ This is so that the LaunchServices database won't easily become corrupt again
    3. Install the latest version of Onyx - free to use and download from www.macupdate.com
~ I suggest Onyx, because some people don't want to mess with the Terminal.
    4. Quit all open applications and run Onyx (it will want to check your Hard Drive etc...that's OK).
    5. Go to the Maintenance pane and then the Rebuild tab and select only the LaunchServices box. Click Execute.
~ This should fix the primary problem with searches
    6. When that process finishes, select only the Mail's Envelope Index box. Click Execute.
~ This should fix related problems with other searches
    7. When that process finishes, select only the Spotlight Index box. Click Execute. (This process of Rebuilding your Spotlight Index could take hours depending on how big your hard drive is).
~ This will give you a clean fast Spotlight database that Mail uses for Entire Message searches.
    8. Quit Onyx
    9. Open Mail.app and test your Entire Message Search!
    ====
Hope that helps - it certainly, finally, did for me!
    Bryce.

  • Missing mail (that's still there)

Recently a had my entire system throw a very strange wobbly, which messed up certain preferences and plists. And since my backup system has been down for a period of time i'm embarrassed to admit to i just had to grit my teeth and start fixing things.
Mostly it's been finding apps and areas of the system that have just had their prefs returned to default, but the oddest one so far has been mail, and i'm hoping that someone out there has a deep understanding of the way mail is stored and can help me out.
All of my emails in two of my POP accounts (and my main two accounts of course) which were dated before the big wobbly were still in the list, but if i trid to open or preview them it would tell me that they needed to be downloaded from the server. When i rebuilt the mailbox it simply lost all of the emails, so now i have nothing in the list prior to the date of the problem. BUT.. they're not gone! If i do a spotlight search for content that i know is in one of the missing emails it will find that email and display it, but of course the 'Show in Mail Viewer' link does nothing.
How can i find these mails and restore them?

Since you have converted from an earlier version of Mail, you may have issues arising out of leftover files, and conversion to Tiger and Mail 2.x, but with the Envelope Index file, for sure.
I want you to read the article at the link below, and as needed, get back to me with some observations, before attempting any changes:

There are some very minor exceptions to this comparative analysis, but it basically holds.
Once all leftover files are removed, then at the root level of the original Mail folder, locate the Envelope Index file, and delete it -- if more than one file has Envelope in the name, delete those as well.
Relaunch Mail, which will announce that it is ready to import your mailboxes -- allow this to continue, and in your case, it will really only be reindexing all your mailboxes, and not importing any.
This will refresh this all-encompassing index file, and I think the the search for reply messages will be resolved.
It may not be very relevant, if you were initially satisfied with the conversion of messages, and did think any were missing, at the time you first upgraded to Tiger.
Let me know any questions. Post back here for specific instructions, and help after you have thoroughly investigated your Mail folder, and mailboxes, and the degree of conversion that may, or may not have been completed.

  • Missing Mail when try a search but subject titles and other info is there

I have Mail on the iMac computer and was searching with a word and found a bunch of things I wanted -- but looking at some of the mail that shows up in the search result window there is nothing in the pane below = then I looked across and while some of the pieces of mail did have their enclosing mailbox noted in that column [and showed up in the pane below], the missing ones did not have any mailbox reference == they show up as mail, with date, and subject and to and from etc. but there is no mailbox and when they are selected there is nothing there - and it's not because they are off the web/server -- I did find them over on another machine in its storage -= but why would they show up at all in a search on the iMac?? That's really confusing....
