Missing Mail Plist

I'm trying to reset the position of the main Mail window (I'm really anal about that) after it got screwed up. Normally the window positions and sizes are stored in the com.apple.mail.plist file in ~/Library/Preferences, but the only mail related file in there is "com.apple.mail.plist.lockfile". Since Mail is not running, and I've tried rebooting, I'm confused about where the preferences are stored. If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate it.

So it did move. Restoring that file from backup doesn't seem have restored the window positions though.
The window positions do appear to be listed in the plist file ("NSWindow" etc.), but they don't change.

  • Missing Mail after transfer to new computer

    Hello,
My parents were using an old iMac running 10.3.9 so I gave them a "newer" old iMac, running 10.4.11. They use multiple users and I transferred everything from their old computer to the newer one. For mail, I transferred the "mail folder in the library and the mail.plist from the preferences folder in the library. My father's email account works fine and looks exactly the same.
However, my mother's account is missing emails received before August. Furthermore, many of the emails display the following message when opened: "The message from SENDER<[email protected]> concerning “SUBJECT” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
I have done some research and this problem typically occurs when the mailbox is full or offline. Yet, the mailbox is not full and it is online. Some of these messages can be read on the server's website (comcast.net), but the server only keeps emails for 2 weeks, so any email received before that period is not there.
What did I do wrong? I followed the same procedure for both my father and my mother so I am confused. Unfortunately, my mother's account was already deleted from the old iMac (my father's still exists). Is there any way to try and get it back?
    Thanks!

Hi DeeCee48, and a warm welcome to the forums!

Slight possibilty, You might try Data Rescue II...
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
(Has a Free Demo to see if it could or not, but you'll need another drive to recover to, or pot the old iMac in FW Target Mode)...

  • Missing mail messages after upgrading

This morning my iMac asked me to upgrade to the latest Mail version and convert my existing messages.  After doing so, I seem to be missing emails from present day back to May 2011.  I am running OS 10.6.8, Mail V4.6 (1085). Ideas?

Will it possible to recover the messges?
Yes, but I'm not sure what your problem really is, though.
First of all, just restoring the HOME/Library/Mail folder is not enough, you should have restored the HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist preferences file as well. This file is where most preferences and all account settings are stored.
As to the "Message has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it." error message, this is one of the many bogus error messages in Mail that have absolutely nothing to do with what the issue really is. The real problem isn't related to not being "online" at all, but rather with "overstuffed" mailbox issues, or with failed conversion from Mail 1.x, or both.
You shouldn't have experienced this problem as a consequence of just moving from one machine to another with the same version of Mac OS X, however, which is what makes me believe you didn't restore your mail data properly. If you haven't received and/or sent mail using the new machine yet, or if what you've sent/received is still on the server, I'd suggest trying to properly copy again both the preferences file and the Mail folder to the new machine. Do this while logged in as the user that's going to use those files in the new machine to avoid possible permissions issues.

  • Mail wont launch at all. Deleted this: ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist

Mail wouldnt let me send outgoing mail claiming there to be an error whilst there was an outgoing connection. So I thought to completely reset the entire app and found a forum that told me to delete something >_> And so I deleted this ~/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and now nothing will launch. And well. Nothing is backed up. Im an idiot. ;___; I just want to go back to my chalk and slate. TECHNOLOGY HATES ME. Please help me.

    Hi Bill,
You could also try com.apple.helpviewer.plist (in ~/Library/Preferences). Have you noted whether this is system-wide or restricted to your user account? I'd create a test account (if you don't have another on your system) and try the help menus. If they're messed up over there, then fixing things in your user folder won't help. The only system resource I could find that seems remotely relevant is /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.helpdata.plist, but I'd be verrrry careful about messing around with stuff in your System folder.
    Hope that helps!

  • After i had my hard drive replaced, i've gone to get my old emails and am unable to find them on time machine. The file com.apple.mail.plist isn't there. HELP!

Pretty sure this will be some sort of user error, but i'm lost.
I had to have my hard drive replaced, so before taking it to the genius bar, i backed up using time machine. I'd had issues with trying to use Carbon Copy Cloner previously so had formatted the external drive before doing time machine. TM seemed to work fine and copied what looked to be everything. Once i'd got the new hard drive in and went to restore everything, when i looked for the file i need to get to apparently get my mails back (Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist) it's not there.
Any help would be MASSIVELY appreciated.

Turn Time Machine OFF temporarily in its preference pane. Leave the window open.
Navigate in the Finder to your backup disk, and then to the folder named "Backups.backupdb" at the top level of the volume. If you back up over a network, you'll first have to mount the disk image file containing your backups by double-clicking it. Descend into the folder until you see the snapshots, which are represented by folders with a name that begins with the date of the snapshot. Find the one you want to restore from. There's a link named "Latest" representing the most recent snapshot. Use that one, if possible. Otherwise, you'll have to remember the date of the snapshot you choose.
Inside the snapshot folder is a folder hierarchy like the one on the source disk. Find one of the items you can't restore and select it. Open the Info dialog for the selected item. In the Sharing & Permissions section, you may see an entry in the access list that shows "Fetching…" in the Name column. If so, click the lock icon in the lower right corner of the dialog and authenticate. Then delete the "Fetching…" item from the icon list. Click the gear icon below the list and select Apply to enclosed items from the popup menu.
Now you should be able either to copy the item in the Finder or to restore it in the time-travel view. If you use the time-travel view, be sure to select the snapshot you just modified. If successful, repeat the operation with the other items you were unable to restore. You can select multiple items in the Finder and open a single Info dialog for all of them by pressing the key combination option-command-I.
When you're done, turn TM back ON and close its preference pane.

    Thanks, Chris.

The .plist files are almost always preferences. I believe "plist" is short for "property list". It contains a list of keys (configuration options) and settings for each key, similar in some respects to the way the Windows Registry works, except that there is a separate file for each set of settings, instead of a single registry file as in Windows. In this case it's a shared settings file for Mail, but I couldn't tell you anything more about the contents.
You were smart to back it up. Usually .plist files can be deleted without signicant loss, because they will be recreated automatically with default settings. But sometimes they contain important settings that may be hard to set up again, especially if you had help setting up your computer in the first place, or have lost important details that you'd need for setting up an app, such as Mail. But sometimes the settings are trivial, for example the position and size of windows, etc., and do not contain settings you'd care about, which may be in another .plist file or in some other kind of file/database.

  • Restore E-Mails without com.apple.mail.plist

Hello - Somehow my Mac crashed and my com.apple.mail.plist is empty - and if I open Mail it asked me to create an account. (like first time starting).
I have a backup of all my emails ~/Mail folder but i dont have a backup of the com.apple.mail.plist - is there any change to restore my Emails without doing this whole add new account thing?
    Thanks

You should ask your ISP for your lost information about your account, create a new account with an empty mail folder. Then, quit Mail, exchange your empty ~/Mail by your backup folder and then reimport your mails.

  • Mail - Can't trace mail.plist

    Hi
My internal HD packed up on me a couple of months back.  I've replaced but now I'm looking to rebuild my mail (folders and emails).
The old HD is now in a USB SATA Hard Drive docking station and I can access (what seems to be) most things.
I cannot trace the com.apple.mail.plist file which I presume I'll need to rebuild things.  I've reviewed other posts on here and noted the usual location of this file but it is not showing when I search.  I have seen conflicting info - one which says that I need to access 'Users - Library - Mail' and it'll be located in there (but I can't even find the Library folder under 'Users' as below:
The second option is going through 'Library - Preferences' and locating it there but, again, I can't trace the relevant file.  All I can see is the following (and it won't open to allow me to see what is in it):
Am I looking in the wrong place?  If it's not showing there should I presume that everything is lost?  I hadn't moved or altered anything prior to the HD failing so one would presume it should be there.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

I'm not convinced I'm looking at anything other than the same folder in library.
This is what I've done so far:
Accessed my OLD HD, gone in to Library and then option-clicked 'Go' and clicked library.  The mail folder has shown up and, on double clicking it I am shown a folder called 'V2'.  On accessing this folder I am presented with the following image:
It has the mail plist and a selection of blue folders.  On checking the blue folders (each relating to different email accounts we have) I have noted that the email copies stored in there are ones we have sent / received since the new HD was put in.  I just cannot understand what I am looking at but it appears to be the files and folders for Mail on the NEW HD.  I presumed, having gone in to the OLD HD library and carrying out the instruction to option-click on 'Go' and then library that I would be looking at folders relating to emails etc that were sent and received on the OLD HD - not the NEW HD.
I have repeated the exercise on the NEW HD and they are indeed one and the same!  I'm more baffled than when I started.
In a nutshell I simply want to extract the mail plist and, if possible, any stored emails from the old HD and merge with the newly set up Mail on the new HD.
    My problems are as follows:
    1) I can't find the mail plist on the the old HD.  What I seem to be viewing after Linc's kind help above is the NEW plist for the Mail set up post new HD.
    2) I cannot locate the folder(s) housing my historic emails (sent/received).  A similar issue to above  I seem to be viewing only the NEW folders housing copies of emails since the new Mail was set up on the new HD.
    3) if someone does give answers to my queries, what I then do with the plist and folder(s) I've extracted from the old HD?  Is it a case of simply placing these files in a particular folder?  Do I need to action anything?
I'm not particularly 'technically-minded' so responses in plain, concise language would be appreciated.
    What am I doing wrong?
    Anybody.

  • No User Library? Where is the Mail.plist and Mail stored?

I have installed Lion on an external USB 2.0 HD and want to copy over my Mail folder and mail.plist from my iMac's internal HD.
I've copied them but don't know where to put them as there appears to be no User Library folder?

We never found out why they hid the user library but not the main library.
I can't remember helping anybody fix anything that they accidentally removed from the Library, but I sure told a lot of people how to fix stuff by digging into the Library.

  • Many com.apple.mail.plist files in Library directory

I have 1,779 com.apple.mail.plist files in my library directory, all of which are dated September 12, 2010 at seemingly random times all in the PM.
These files are supposed to contain information about Mail preferences and account, right?  Seems like way too many files.
    Can I delete them?
Why was I looking at them anyway, you ask?  Because I was trying to solve the problem of com.apple.quicklook.satellite errors in my log, went into the Library directory to delete the quicklook plist files and notices these mail plist files.
    So, can I delete these?

I would delete them. Only one should exist, and it is located in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. To access that folder start with:
    Exposing the /Home/Library/ Folder
Pick one of the following methods:
    A. This method will make the folder visible permanently. Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and paste the following at the command prompt:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
    Press RETURN.
    B. Click on the Desktop, press the OPTION (⌥) button, select Library from the Finder's Go menu.
    C. Select Go To Folder from the Finder's Go menu. Paste the following in the path field:
    ~/Library
    Press the Go button.

The mbox filing structure used with Tiger Mail is significantly different than the mbox filing structure used with previous Mail.app versions under Jaguar and Panther.
Tiger Mail stores each message contained in a mailbox as a separate file in .emix format located within the Messages folder for the mailbox. Although you can import Jaguar and Panther mailboxes to Tiger, the mbox format used with Tiger Mail is not backwards compatible or interchangeable with Jaguar or Panther Mail without taking an additional step first. The reason you are seeing the old messages available before and up until the time you upgraded to Tiger is because you didn't delete the left over content package files used by Panther Mail and one of these files contains all messages messages and message attachments which are not automatically deleted after the conversion process to the mbox format used with Tiger Mail is completed.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > this POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account). Within the account named folder is there an INBOX.mbox file and/or an INBOX.mbox named folder and the same for the other mailboxes (mboxes) within the account named folder?
Tiger Mail.app mboxes at the Finder level are folders and each folder contains a Messages folder which stores each message contained in the mailbox as a separate file in .emix format.
Jaguar and Panther Mail.app mboxes are .mbox files only, not a folder.

  • Missing mail after restoring mail profile folder

Hello,i had problems with my sent folder and had to restore my profile folder to a 3 day old copy, but after that my inbox is missing mail for 16 days, the mail is extremely important as it contains all my orders and working material and i need a way to recover it. Please help me! Right now there is no previous version of the folder to restore once i open its options, neither on the inbox file, what do i do now?

restored what and how is the first question. If your talking about windows restore I am out of here. That is a Microsoft mess I want nothing to do with.
The only constant I can suggest is right click the folder in Thunderbird, select properties and then the repair button to force a reindex of the mail store.

i'm having a real pain in the patoot trying to use dashcode under 10.5.6 leopard.
i launch dashcode to create a new countdown widget in Dashcode. i set all the widget attributes and mark that and the customize countdown options as done. i save. i then try and just run it, as is. each and every time i get the same error: "Cannot open widget: Missing Info.plist file." i check the "Files" view and yes, an Info.plist file is in there. also, it's properly named "Info.plist," capital "I," not lowercase "i" on "Info." (yes, i've seen those errors mentioned in these forums.
in addition, if i save everything, shut down dashcode, and re-open it, i then get a Canvas view screen with nothing but the blank, grey checkered canvas where the widget formerly was. and i haven't altered any files or changed a line of code.
i'm on a black macbook with an intel core2duo 2.16 Ghz process, 2 GB ram and mac os x 10.5.6 leopard with all the latest updates to the system applied, security updates and all else.
to make sure it wasn't my development install, i downloaded and installed the latest Xcode 3.1.2 package and iPhone SDK 2.2.1 package and installed them both. i still have the same problem after installing those, restarting, and doing the exact same steps above in Dashcode v. 2.0.1 (159). before this, this never happened to me in dashcode before.
any help as to what is happening here would be most appreciated. thank you.

I am also having problems with dashcode.
If I create a simple generic screen with text, an indicator and a text entry and then save, I see two errors. Sometimes it pretends to save, but afterwards it reverts to the initial hello prompt. Other times it complains that it cannot save (my memory is sketchy as to the exact error because I've been seeing it a while ago).
I initially installed the XCode that came with my macintosh last fall. I don't know the version, but could look it up. I've since then installed the XCode on the site and the XCode that comes with the iphone development kit. I've installed and uninstalled (using both rm and the unistallation command given in the installation readme) in several combinations of the above xcode versions. So far, I've had no luck.
Sorry, I have no answers, but our problems seemed similar enough for me to chime in.

  • Exchange 2010 - missing mails moved by rules / strange problem

    Hello,
one of our users has a pretty strange problem.
First of all, he has 12 rules (11 server-sided plus default for removing categories) and a HUGE folder-tree for about 1.5 years.
    His tree looks like:
    Inbox
    -A
    --1
    --2
    ---a
    ---b
    --3 Newsletter
    --4
    -B
    --1
    --2
    --3 Newsletter
    --4
...and so on for 192 folders
    Other Stuff
    -A
    --1
    --2
... and so on for 80 folders
Since this week, he complains about missing mails.
While investigating this problem, everything looks fine at first. Mails are stored to his mailbox successfully.
Later we found out, that he has rules to move incoming mails to his "--3 Newsletter" folders depending on sender (and no further processing) and was looking for exactly those mails.
But the mails were not visible in the target folder and neither in the inbox folder.
Using the search function on inbox, I was not able to find the mails. After checking the box for all subfolders, the mail was found. Hovering the mail I was told, that it is in the target folder - where for sure it wasn't.
Opening the mail from the search result and clicking on [File], "Inbox" was displayed as the current folder.
After re-running the matching rule, the mails were visible in the target folder. This worked for yesterday. New mails were moved successfully.
And today, we have the very same problem again. And again, I can quick-fix it by re-running the rules.
As I can see and "fix" this on his machine and on my admin machine, this can't be any local problem.
Any hints or solutions for that?

(Gosh, this input field is a huge pain in the ass! Why the hell does it automatically uppercase some words?)

    AdminDisplayVersion               : Version 14.3 (Build 123.4)
Where can I see which RU this is?
Outlook on his machine is configured with cache-mode, Outlook on my admin machine is configured for online-mode only
The Rollup installed (if any) is not shown in EMC or EMS.

    Dude, where's my rollup?
