Missing Mailbox

I am missing a Mailbox in Mail. It has not been used for at least a year. When I tried to access it today, I got the message "Email needs to be downloaded. Take this account online." for each message in the mailbox. These emails were years old and had already been downloaded and deleted from the server. The accounts for the emails shown were already online and had downloaded other already today.
When I tried to rebuild the mailbox all the messages disappeared and the mailbox is completely empty. There are other mailboxes in this folder and they perform as usual. I've no problems with any other mailbox.
How can restore these emails? Thanks for your help

Hi to all,
I've had similar Mail problems and have been reading a lot of posts. I think everyone should read carefully the info on Mac Help and elsewhere about rebuilding mailboxes before you do it. My particular Mail setup (before I lost it) was to delete my messages from my server after I downloaded them into Mail, so a rebuild would only give me an empty mailbox. After I spent a lot of time importing all the messages I could find, I certainly didn't want to start over. I also looked around and discovered that my messages were in user/Pictures/Library/Mail/Mailboxes instead of user/Library/Mail/Mailboxes (don't know why, don't remember setting it up there), so take some time to look around carefully to find all the old messages.
After "successfully" importing into a newly setup Mail mailbox, I discovered I could not read or move messages -- I got the "offline" error message. So I shut down Mail and made a copy by holding down the Alt key and dragging the user/Library/Mail folder (where my newly created mailbox was) to my desktop. Then I restarted Mail and imported from this desktop backup file -- this gave me a "good" mailbox that I could then further set up with sub-mailboxes, etc. Maybe a tip for others ....

Laurie

  • Missing mailbox and time machine

Somehow I lost a mailbox from Mail. No problem I thought, I've got time machine. So I go to the Mail folder in my library then to the mailbox and start Time Machine. I highlight the mail box and ask time Machine to restore. What I get when I open Mail is an empty mailbox folder.
Since the mailbox was more important than my recent mail, I opened applications and restarted Time Machine. I went back a couple of days until my mailbox was present and asked Time Machine to restore the Mail program. It did but still with an empty mailbox folder for my missing mailbox.
So I tried again with Time Machine and actually opened my missing mailbox where I could see all the e-mail and open individual letters. It was there. I highlighted the email and Time Machine said click restore. I did and I don't think anything happened. At least my mailbox folder was still empty when I opened Mail.
Is there any way to restore a missing mailbox with Time Machine?

Actually I must have done something right. If I searched Mail for an email address I knew was in my missing mailbox, it could find it and actually open the letter, but it didn't tell me where it was.
In looking under the mailbox menu down at the bottom it says "rebuild." So I opened my empty mailbox and clicked on rebuild. Like magic, my mail reappeared.

  • Clean Erase Of HD - Missing Mailboxes On Reinstall of SL - Help Please

    After Clean Erase,
Missing Mailboxes created for my websites and others from the sidebar.
    80% of notes also missing.
Saved to a clone of HD prior to clean erase.
Saw a post once on how to move address book and mail boxes from an ext. HD clone to new clean HD, couldn't find the thread.
I believe that there are certain files in the library that I need to move over.
    Not sure which ones.
If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. New so as much detail as possible if you can.
    Thanks,

Still don't have the "Mail" notes created before erasing the drive. Am I missing a file?
Dunno about notes... I personally think that this is not something that belongs in a mail client and am a bit annoyed Apple stuffed it in there.
I have to enter a password for the account for the mailboxes. The only passwords I use don't work, is there a way to change the password?
That is specific to your e-mail account, and generally changing passwords requires knowing the old one. You'll need to contact the e-mail provider and ask them to reset the password for you.
What is the best way to move the old address book to the clean drive.
That stuff is all stored in *~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/*. Also, in ~/Library/Preferences/, there are two Address Book-related files:
    com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist
    com.apple.AddressBook.plist

  • Missing mailboxes: upgraded from Mac OS 10.6.2 to 10.8.4

hi, I upgraded from Mac OS 10.6.2 to 10.8.4 and mailboxes are missing. I tried  using IMPORT - it does not see  those folders which i could easily see using using 10.6.2. Now, the /library/mail folder is not  visible when i use FINDER.
Somebody told me if i hold the OPTION key when using the GO-TO it will see files that have been made invisible - but this does not work on my mac.
    can anybody help?
    many thanks
    david

Holding option doesn't show invisible files.
Holding Option allows access to the Library from the Go menu in Finder.
    Always back up, first.
Check to make sure the mailboxes still exist in the user/Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes folder.
If so, you might try removing the Envelope Index from the V2/MailData folder, then start Mail. That will cause it to reindex everything.

Has anyone gotten their mailboxes on their iPhone
    yet?
After-all there are options on the iPhone to "Move
this message to a new mailbox."
Everything I've read and tried has not worked. . .
    Anyone?
I have a MAC and when I activated my phone..everything synced flawless, including my email accounts. Without a hitch, I had all my email accounts synced to my phone. Aside those email accounts, I have several "gmail" accounts. The only thing I had to do manually (per say) was go to gmail.com and choose on my preference "Enable POP mail". Then I went to my iphone "Settings" and selected "Add Account" tapped "Gmail" and put my email address and password... and "Presto"! Hope this helps in some way.....

  • Restore Missing Mailbox

I have an old email account with an ISP that I no longer have an account for. However I do need to retain access to the old email messages.
I'm not quite sure how but I appear to have lost all the messages for this inbox for this particular account. I don't have it in Time Machine but I do have a copy on an old hard disk. Is there a way I can copy the file across and replace the empty one on my computer?
The backup is a OS X 10.9.1 where as my current system used OS X 10.10 - Would this cause any problems?

Thanks. I'm trying to find out if there is anyway to restore the inbox in the original position?

  • Lion Mail search: 'All' search missing some mailboxes - anyone seen this?

Yet another Mail search issue in Lion - at least I have not seen this one documented before.
Noticed in searching Mail after move from Snow Leopard to Lion: a search on 'All' mailboxes misses items that are present in one particular (very large) mailbox, although a search on that mailbox alone finds them.  Because we have two Macs, one already migrated to Lion, the other still with Snow Leopard, we can see that a search in SN finds everything whereas the Lion search does not.
But there's more: a possible explanation occurred to us: the 'missing' mailbox was titled "INBOX"  (some levels down - comes from an Entourage archive).  Renamed that OLD INBOX, and results started coming up (with 'All' mailboxes selected) including its contents.
However: changing the search string to different senders produced inconsistent results.  Use one name, that person's incoming mail in that folder showed up with search set to 'All'.  Change to another sender, still no results from that mailbox, even tho' (as ever) the messages showed up when the search was restricted to that mailbox.
    All very confusing!
    What's going on?
    Thanks.

    Seems to work here ok:

  • I just upgraded to Mavarick.  I can no longer find my mailboxes in my e-mail.  I read to go to 'finder'/ go go to folder the type in ~/Library which I did and I eventually found all my mailboxes.  But I want them to be available from my e-mail.  How ?

I just upgraded to Mavarick.  I can no longer find my mailboxes in my e-mail.  I went to 'finder', under 'go'> go to folder / mail and eventually I found all my missing mailboxes.  But I want them to show up as they used to, in my e-mail.  How do I get them back?

.........and just wasted more time clicking on the 'chat online' link which of course does nothing.
I'll be spending time searching for an alternative ISP instead. Absolutely sick of this.

  • How to reveal/open mailbox containing selected message in search results?

A user is trying to find a message. She searches for the sender's email address and she sees the message in the search results and it is listed as being in a mailbox named "Prism". She browses through her list of mailboxes (local and on the server) and see no such mailbox. She opens Get Info and sees that mailbox is listed as containing 53 messages, yet selecting it and clicking on the Show Messages buttons generates an empty window and the error "No Mailbox Selected".
I had her rebuild her In mailbox on the chance that the missing folder was a child of the In box (I've seen her do that before). I have on more than one occasion watched someone delete mailboxes that are the child of the In box and when they deleted the second-to-last one the last mailbox also disappears. In those cases the disappearing mailbox has always been empty so it wasn't a big issue. I'm wondering if this is how the "Prism" mailbox disappeared.
I seem to recall that there is a keyboard shortcut that would open the parent mailbox of a selected email in a search results listing but I can't seem to find that shortcut. Anyone know if there is such a thing? And anyone have any other ideas how to find the missing mailbox?

    Michael,
if the search was done from within Mail, looking into "all folders" and you see the message, open that message in the Find results window and top right you will see a link to open the email in its original mailbox.
Now if you do that, the left column should show where the mailbox is.

  • Old mailboxes are no longer in my toolbar.  I am able to search and find the messages, but unable to pull up the mailboxes.

The mailboxes I created are no longer showing up in my toolbar.  I have tried all the suggestions found here, but nothing works.  They are not showing up in Library either, however the mailboxes do still exist because when I do a search in mail, the messages come up and the correct mailbox is indicated with the message.  I can't find them with time machine, because that requires you to click on a specific mailbox in order to recover it.

Thanks for the suggestion but it did not work.  I looked up how to re-index and followed the instructions.  I found the files in the library to delete and did so.   While watching the progression on the screen I saw each (missing) mailbox name come up and be processed.  I was hopeful!  However, in the end, my toolbar still only shows three "on my mac" mailboxes, two of which I don't even recognize.  One of them is labelled "IMPORT" and has 15977 emails, but when I click on it nothing happens.

  • Where are my Mailboxes, and the rest of my Notes ?

I just got a new (Late 2013, Yosemite 10.10.1) 27" iMac to replace my old (Late 2009) 27" iMac. When I started it up the first time I was glad to see that all my contacts were in my Contacts, all my  special dates were in my Calendar, all of my Bookmarks were in Safari and all of my Songs and Podcasts were in iTunes.
What I did not see was my Custom Mailboxes and "VIP's" in Mail (Version 8.1), and only some of my notes in Notes (Version 3.1) were there.
Not sure where to go from here ???

    Hi Brenden,
Thank you for your response. When I moved over to the new iMac I did not do a migration. I had been having problems with the old iMac, which my local Apple store, after a series of tests, determined to be a software issue. Therefore I did not want bring it over to the new iMac. I have been reinstalling new copies of my non-Apple applications from there original sources and retrieving, only absolutely necessary (i.e. photos and financial info), data from a, Time Machine backed up, external hard drive, folder by folder.
I read the articles that you suggested and found them informative and helpful. In particular the one regarding mailboxes.
Mail (Yosemite): Import or export mailboxes
For my own peace of mind, I called Apple support and with their assistance, walking me through the process, I was able to retrieve the missing Mailboxes. Since I had hooked up my external hard drive to the new iMac and backed it up, I was not able to access the backup data from the old iMac via Time Machine. It would not go back beyond the date of the first backup of the new one, even though the data was there on the hard drive. I double clicked the external hard drive icon on the Desktop to open it and was able to obtain the missing files that way using "Import Mailboxes..." from the File menu in the Mail app.
Thanks again for your reply and assistance,

  • Created new mailbox, not showing up

I recently created a new top level mailbox, named "Sent Messages"; it did not appear immediately after creation, and hasn't shown up after restarting Mail.
I thought maybe I didn't hit the "OK" button during the Naming prompt, so I tried to add a new mailbox of the same name; I receive an error stating 'The mailbox ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/Sent Messages.mbox already exists'.
I've navigated to this location in Finder, and see that indeed there exists a folder by this name, containing a single .plist file. I've compared the contents of this .plist to the .plist of another top level mailbox that appears properly, and there are no negligible differences.
I've tried to Rebuild Mailbox on all of my user-created mailboxes, and looked into hierarchial mailboxes to see if it got created in a nested fashion; all to no avail.
I've tried deleting the .mbox in the ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes directory, but it just gets recreated the next time I launch Mail.
I've tried creating a new uniquely named mailbox, and it gets correctly created and appears at the top level in Mail, as well as under ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes.
I've switched view options from large to small mailbox icons, hoping this refresh might catch the missing mailbox
I suppose my next course of action would be to export my mail, flush my preferences, and recreate my account and reimport all my messages, but I'd really like to avoid having to do that.
I have no idea what else to try to do to fix this problem. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue?
(Fun fact: I started every paragraph in this thread with the letter "I".)
      Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It isn't clear to me what your problem really is, so I'm not sure what it is that you want to fix, but I can help you better understand what happened.
"Sent Messages" is the name Mail uses for the standard mailboxes where sent messages of each account are stored. Such mailboxes don't appear by their name in Mail, but rather as children of the Sent group using the account name instead (if you have more than one account).
A Sent Messages.mbox folder in ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/ would also be treated as a standard Sent mailbox and, hence, displayed within the standard Sent group (as On My Mac), instead of treated like any other custom mailbox.
