Missing master files

I use the library to manage all of my files and when I moved files the versions from one project to another some of the master files are now missing. Any easy way to locate the missing master files or restore them to the library? I move images between projects all the time and this is the first instance of masters being lost.
Thanks,

First, check your trash for an Aperture folder and make sure the files did not get removed somehow.
If the master images are not there, go to your Aperture library in Finder and right-click on it, selecting "Show Package Contents". Then find the projects you moved the images to, and also the project you moved the images from. Again, right click and "Show Package Contents".
Now that you are inside your library, look in the "import" folders - that s where all of your master files are stored. You can use Finder to search for them as well in the FInder window for each project.
When you find them, put them somewhere outside the Aperture library and use the "locate masters" command to re-link them, then use "Consolidate masters" to get them back in the library.
Good luck!

  • Missing master files in Aperture

I am missing master files from Aperture 3. I rebuilt the library with no success.
Oddly, I can't even find them in Time Machine even though I know I exported versions of them. The entire month of imports doesn't ever appear in Time Machine even though I have proof that I used the master files to export in July. I haven't used Time Machine a lot so maybe I'm missing something.
    What else can I try.

Have you checked, if the missing masters are inside the Aperture Library package?
Sometimes Aperture looses the connection to managed masters.
You need to find out the exact date that you imported your images - you can find that information in the "Import Session" metadata tag - ad this tag to one of the metadata preset that you use to display the metadata in the info panel - set themetadata preset in the  info panel to "edit".
Then open the Aperture Library package (ctrl-click the Aperture Library in the Finder window) and select "Show package Contents". Inside the window that opens go to the "Masters" folder, then inside to the year , month, day you imported the images. Are the original master image files still there?
If yes, then make a backup copy of these images, to have a copy just in case, and try to repair the permissions in your library with the library first aid tools:
Aperture 3 User Manual: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library
If you cannot reconnect the missing originals/masters this way, reimport the masters you found inside the library.
Please post back, once you looked inside the library, if the masters/originals are still there.

  • Missing master files...again.

Well Aperture has lost my master files again.
I keep them on an external HDD and backed up to another external HDD.
How to point Aperture in the right direction? (thousands of images)
    thanks

    Hello Steve,
    are you using Aperture 3.2.3?
Well Aperture has lost my master files again.
What was the reason the first time this happenend?
I keep them on an external HDD and backed up to another external HDD.
Is your external HDD connected and can you see the master image files in the Finder?
How to point Aperture in the right direction? (thousands of images)
    Launch Aperture
Select the images with the missing masters in the Browser
In main menu bar select "File -> Locate Referenced Files"
The window that appears has two panels:
In the top panel you select one of the images with missing masters
In the lower panel you select the correct master file on your external volume.
If these two match, then the "reconnect" buttons will become available. Press "Reconnect all" and Aperture should find the masters again.
To be alble to connect all at once you may wish to create a smart album containing all images with missing masters:
File -> New -> Smart album"
and add a rule "File status is missing" or "File status is offline"
    Good Luck

  • Missing master files in Aperture 2

I (like a lot of others on here!) am having trouble with my photos in Aperture 2 displaying the yellow exclamation mark and grey arrow badge.
When I go to File > Relocate Master..., I get a message saying they cannot be found.
I searched on one photo's filename through spotlight and found the images in "User"/Pictures/Merged Libray (which is the name of my iPhoto library)/Masters/ then a string of numbered subfolders, 2011/04/12/ etc.
BUT when I go back to Aperture and go to File > Manage Referenced Files in order to reconnect them (is this right??), the folder "Masters" of my iPhoto library does not appear in the bottom navigation pane of the Aperture dialog box. I can navigate to the Masters folder through Finder by asking to "Show package contents" for iPhoto, but this is not an option in the Aperture window.
Does anyone know how I could fix this? Could I perhaps copy the iPhoto "Masters" folder files, create a new folder on the desktop or some such, and ask Aperture to speak with them? That seems a bit convoluted.! :S Hope someone can help!
    I am on a 15" MacBook Pro, OS X 10.6.7, Aperture 2.
    Cheers

A mistake I used to make that resulted in this is when I import photos, not double checking the option to save them into the Aperture library, or leave them where they already are on the hard drive.  Then, I'd delete the originals, and bang, exclamation points.
If Aperture says there's no physical Master file anymore, then there's not.  Back track and figure out when/where you moved the originals or if you deleted them.  It's always safer to doube check an import is placing the Masters into Aperture's own library.
If they're in iPhoto now, delete them from Aperture, re-import them from iPhoto.

  • Missing master files / Version-0.apversion

    Greetings,
i have an inexplicable error in Aperture 3. I have migrated my photo library into aperture and allowed it to "ingest" the photos. Prior to this, i was using the browser/finder as the interface of choice for managing my files.
Now aperture is creating this error for a small number of files. When in the browser, the thumbnail is replaced by a dotted white outline bearing the filename Version-0.apversion or Master.apmaster.
When i double click on the thump, the screen will flash between the image and the grey background. In the meantime the Processing indicator at the bottom of the screen will fire up and the Activity monitor will display a never ending "Updating library" processing task with the counter going into the thousands. All 4 cores will fire up at the same time, but only when the app is in the foreground, when aperture is minimized, then the processor activity will stop.
I have tried to export versions or the originals, nothing happens. A directory with a Version-0.apversion or Master.apmaster file (4k) will be created.
I dont know how to address this issue and i have not been able to find anything online. I am looking forward to any ideas.

Anyone? any ideas? any more information i can supply for someone to look into this?
I am seriously regretting allowing aperture to handle my images........

  • How to view missing master files?

How can i view just the missing files so i can delete them? i have some missing files and i can't delete them for some reason.

Trying to diagnose something like this third hand probably isn't very effective. But when you open Terminal you are "in" your home directory. If you then issue this command:
    cd Desktop
and hit return you will then be "in" your Desktop folder. If you then issue the list command:
    ls -al
you will get a list of all the files and folders that are in the Desktop folder. If he sees everything, then the stuff is there. He could try creating a new folder in his home folder, call it something like fromDesktop, and then issue this command (this assumes he is still "in" the Desktop folder):
    mv * ~/fromDesktop
This will move everything from the Desktop folder into the fromDesktop folder. A list command will verify things:
    ls -al ~/fromDesktop
If all his stuff is listed, but he still can't see it in its new location using the Finder, then it could be that somehow the invisible bit got set.
And for Finder's sake, tell him to stop saving all that stuff to the Desktop! Put stuff in folders in his home folder. I've seen cases where excessive numbers of files dropped on the Desktop brought the Finder to its knees for many hours. Every single thing on the Desktop is treated as a window by the Finder, and having a ton of stuff there is needlessly slowing things down. And he should be backing up every night, not every couple of weeks. There are many programs available that will do this automatically. If he is in business he should be using one. Not to mention burning separate CDs of things for every client.

  • Missing files "Unavailable master files cannot be relocated."

    Please help
    I have missing masters -
I had 25,000 referenced masters in a directory next to the aperture library and ran consolidate (thought it was successful) but now I see 1012 "Missing" Masters.  When I do "Locate Referenced Files" Aperture says I do not have any referenced files.  But if I go do a Finder search for files in the old referenced location they are all still out there - (and not in the Aperture Library Masters)   (They all have the "Arrow/Triangle/exclamation mark" badge)
So my question is - can I connect the "Missing" to the existing file?  Or do I have to delete all the "missing masters" and loose all the aperture metadata I have on them?
I have read all the treads I can find and have not seen the same issue -
"Locate Referenced Files" is not an option.
and if I run relocate on the files I get this error:
"Unavailable master files cannot be relocated.
The selected master image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again."
Any advice or help from the community would be very appreciated - this is my first post - hope it was intelligible

    Hi Frank,
Yes my aperture library and the "master" directory are right next to each other in ~/Pictures/. The history of this is as follows:
    1. I copied my entire library and masters from my laptop to my iMac ( was out of room )
    2. I verified everything was good - looked fine
    3. Deleted my MacBook libraries.
    4. Consolidated my library - in prep to clean up
    5.  Did a bunch of heavy cleaning efforts like merging projects within the library.
    6. Ran a program to find duplicates - all it does is add keywords to suspect images.
    7. Then I tried to relocate masters to a new directory and it errored out
    8. Did a search for all "missing" (1000)
    9. Started reading all the blogs - looking for answers
    10. Ran all the repairs I could find
    11.  Posted this help request.
12 1/2 - now looking at the SQLlite blogs out there - but as you can see my situation is... Odd. I wish I could query the aperture DB directly and see what it is thinking....
    * Sorry - everyone. I'll try to get back to the rest of the replies later tonight

  • I am trying to export a video I have made in FCP 10.0.8 to Youtube or to a master file and I keep on getting an error -50, or "error exporting master file at frame 20074" Any ideas?

Having used FCExpress for a while I decided to give FC Pro X a trial, I created my first video with it, exported to youtube and it worked fine.  I am now trying to export my second video to youtube and I get an error -50 which means absolutely nothing.  Not being defeated that easy I tried exporting to a mster file using the H.264 codec and I get an error "exporting master file at frame 20074" - again another useless error.  It takes at least 10 minutes to get to this error after the rendering has started, it gets about 12% in.  Any ideas where to start - I am seriously at the point of giving up with Final Cut Pro X simply on the basis of it being more trouble than its worth - I am just glad I did not pay for it yet...
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Gerry

    Hi Russ,
Thanks for your response. I am not an experienced user of FC or other video editing software but if its that hit and miss I think I will go to the trouble of finding some better software - I have a busy enough life as is, I don;t want to get into second guessing what a software problem might be!
I have just successfully exported my video to a master file using one of the Apple codec options so it looks like it could be to do with the H.264 codec.  I am wondering if Apples Compressor software would solve this problem - the only way to try this it to buy it, there is not trial for the compressor app.  Any ideas?
    Thanks

  • Looking for some help with an error message when exporting master file. I'm stuck and would even pay to get this sorted out!

Hey guys, I'm really in a bind here and need some urgent help tonite. I would even be willing to pay for some actual help and not some vague information that i may not be able to understand if we could do something via skype or some other way that would be much quicker than a message board. Of course I have to have the project done by tomorow . so I'm new to fcpx, but have succesfully exported 2 other projects. I've also ran into this predicament before (error message not allowing me complete export) and have been able to solve that by converting the files i imported off my camera (canon g20) to a different file type (prores).
so where I'm at now: i have a 13 min short, all shot on my canon g20, imported and converted to prores422 with the brorsoft video converter with all the shots in a single event in fcpx. i'm using fcpx version 10.0.08. I have one main video track in my timeline that is completely full of very fast edits. (all quick 2-5 second clips, sped up shots in 2x, 4x, or 8x, tons of transitions, titles, and a little fx. theres 2 audio tracks, one is narration/speech and the other is an ongoing music track that constantly ducks everytime the subject speaks (tons of ducks/edits). Have you seen mtv cribs? Well i filmed an EXACT replica. So If you've seen one of those episodes, its literally the same exact same thing. I have all of my work completed, everything has been fully rendered, and i have it exactly as I want it.
I'm including all this information in case it may help. my successful projects ive exported in the past were rather simple, and this one is very complex and full of edits. here is what it looks like in the timeline:
Ive tried exporting the master file using almost all the different ways with no luck. My primary objective is to get it on youtube by any means by tommorow for a showing to a potential buyer (long story) and so I've been told using the h.264 is the best format for that. This, along with the other methods give me the same error message:
It think it gives this error message when i reach 24% everytime during export.
So first of all, what is that error message? Do i need to be concerned about the specifics of it, or is there something major that I'm missing? Like i said, i dont care how, but I need to get this video up on youtube tonite for an important viewing tomorrow. Conceptually, I think if i can figure this one out I shouldnt have any more trouble in the future doing something so basic, yet critical, such as exporting my 40+ hours of work for someone to see.
anyway, I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge with this software, and for my extremely long winded question which will probably have the opposite effect for me as most wont want to take the time to read all this, BUT i figured if i was as thorough as possible it might help actually getting a concrete answer, instead of a "read the manual, exporting is on page 37." or "use the share button on the right of the timeline then just click export master file and it will work everytime."
Cheers everybody, and thank you. Like i said if someone is up, and willing to talk via skype, phone, messanger or any other method that works for you I would be totally down and will compensate you generously for your time. thanks again.
    Taphabit

boom! that advice was correct and worked. i was able to export the full project as a quicktime movie and it can be uploaded to youtube.
NOTE, theres is definately quite a few noticeable audio glitches/lags/pops that werent there before doing this. I believe, and will test to make sure, that having a project such as this one needs to render before exporting. I'm not sure if the advice requires the project to be unrendered before exporting for a specific reason, because if it will export fine after rendering the project that's the way to go. like i said the edited version i have in my timeline plays back perfectly but this exported version has quite a few noticeable audio glitches (a few video glitches too). I'm going to retry doing the first few steps of your advice, but then at the end render, then export and compare the results...
OK, so this leads to a big question, Is this something that is standard for everyone when trying to export? If its not, what causes this error?
is there any way of preemptively avoiding it in future projects?
thanks again, and hopefully this information will help others as exporting seem to be one of the biggest problems in fcpx. any word on a new patch or firmware update?

  • Sharing master files with Lightroom 4

Several years ago I used Aperture and ended up switching to LR4, but miss a few of the features of Aperture.     I am trying to figure out a way of using Aperture to access some of my master files without having to duplicate my master files from LR4.    It is my understanding that if I import files into Aperture that the images go into a specific Aperture Library.    What I really liked about LR was that my master files could sit where ever I wanted them and the application only accessed the files rather than stowed the masters into a unique application library.

You can import images into Aperture as referenced originals, and reference them in their original location, without moving them into the aperture library. Only you must not move them, rename them, edit them in any way after importing them into Aperture, for that will break the connection between the version in Aperture and the referenced original master.

  • Fix a few "lost" master files from accidental hard disk disconnect?

By gross stupidity, I disconnected the firewire cable to my external hard disk on which reside all my masters in the middle of a 'relocate masters' execution. I normally load new images into the aperture library, cull and edit them, and then relocate the masters to the external hard drive where they reside.
As a result of tripping over the HD cable, I now have 5 files that show up when one chooses "show in finder", but show as being located on some kind of phantom duplicate external HD address, but which contains only the 'missing' 5 files. I've not figured out a way to to copy these to the 'real' address (or anywhere else). Additionally, I have one image that still has a master but it is has been horizontally compressed.
    Any ideas?

That is basically what I ended up doing for the five images. My greater concern was whether I might have in some manner damaged the database itself, or left some kind of "'ghosts" file bits to haunt me in the future. It seems to be behaving, so I'm hopeful that only the image references were lost. I've not yet deleted the damaged images in case someone alerted me to ramifications, but it is about time. I'm also not sure how to get rid of the 'dummy' files and their duplicate path name ( which appears otherwise empty).
I hate it when I do something as dumb as I did...

  • Raw files in an event in iPhoto are not present in master file?

    Hi all,
I keep my raw files in an external drive in iPhoto (9.5.1) library. I decided to move my library to Lightroom 5.7 via duplicating the master file of the corresponding event in iPhoto and taking this duplicate out of the iPhoto library conclusively to move to Lightroom. This worked perfectly but later I realised that two of my event files are not present in the master file. When I open iPhoto I can see and play around with these events of raw files with no problem at all.
    - I searched through the each and every master file sub directory but couldn't find them.
    - I used spotlight and could only find the .jpg versions of these raw files. I never converted them to jpgs before.
    - The only difference from other events that I can think of is these two event files contain more than 1000 raw photos while the others contain less than 1000.
Running OS X 10.9.5. Any help would be appreciated.

When I open iPhoto I can see and play around with these events of raw files with no problem at all.
Select one of the photos from these events in iPhoto and use the command "File > Reveal in Finder > Original file".
Does this show the folder with the missing RAW files?
To migrate your original files to Lightroom you might consider to select the photos in iPhoto and to use the command "File > Export ". This way, iPhoto will find the originals for you, and it will be safer. You can be sure, that all selected photos will be exported, and you do not risk to corrupt your iPhoto library.

  • Convert a copy to a master file

    Ernie,
My master has been destroyed. I can view my photo but I cannot work (change) them because I receive the message that aperture cannot find the master file.
So I would like to know if there is a way to convert my file (1000 photo), that is considered by aperture as a copy, to a master file. Thank you

    Colette,
your answer to Ernie Stamper was meant for this thread, right?
I am a user of aperture 3.2.4 and I want to convert a work file containing about 1000 photos to an original file (the original was lost by mistake). Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Colette
Yesterday the ASC system was down and the reply button did not work. As Ernie told you in that thread, you can indeed turn the previews you still have into new original master image files by importing them again.
The simplest way to do that:
While in Aperture select all thumbnails in the Browser and simply drag them to a folder on the Desktop. This will save the previews you now have as jpeg image files in that folders. You may want to do that for each project separately, so that your images stay organized.
Then import these exported images again. They now will be imported as new originals and you can edit them again. Check, if all your metadata tags (ratings, captions)  have been preserved. Otherwise lift&stamp them from the original fles. Then delete the old versions with missing masters.

  • Errors After detaching file from associated master files through SPD ( including standard seattle and oslo)

I am getting the following error after I detach any aspx file from the master. On preview
"ContentPlaceHolder can only be used in .master files."  (correlation Id search with logs does not shed much light)
This is happening with any simple page detachment using SPD. even on pages created with standard master pages.
Either the SPD functionality does not work or I am missing something basic. Help is appreciated
    Thanks
    Madhu

    Hi,
According to your description, I have done a test, and met the same issue with you.
Because ContentPlaceHolder defines a region in a Master Page and the Content control is used on the page to display text/markup in the place of the ContentPlaceHolder.
See this link for an example:
     http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.web.ui.webcontrols.content.aspx
The "Detach master page" seems a bug, my suggestion is: you can create a blank ASPX page in SharePoint Designer, then start customizing on this new page.
