Missing originals in Aperture

Hello All,
I'm having an odd problem.
First off, a little background, I am using Aperture 3.4.3. and because of the size of my photo library, I store it on a raided external drive.  I have photos from 1999 to 2013 stored in Aperture.  I started storing digital photos originally on a PC, using Photoshop Elements.  When I migrated to Mac in 2006, I started off using iPhoto.  In 2009, I started using Aperture.   At that point I moved almost everything into the Aperture Library.
My problem is this, I have some photos that have gone missing.   I think they're still online in the system, but confused with other photos.  I know where Aperture stores it's files, in the Masters folder, hidden inside the Aperture Library Package Contents.  But my Aperture Library only shows Master Folders to 2009.   I have no idea where the Masters for 1999-2008 are located.
Does anyone here have a suggestion?
thanks.

I guess missing only 100 photos out of 30,000 isn't a bad record, right?
That is good, but finding the pictures would be better.
In what way are the image files missing? Don't you see them at all in your library? Or do you see black thumbnails with warnings about missing original image files?
Sometimes images miraculously reappear when you rebuild the library - if there are orphaned originals in the Aperture library, they will be collected in a project named "Recovered ....". So you could try, if rebuilding can retrieve some files, but make sure you have a backup of your library before rebuilding.
I started off using iPhoto.  In 2009, I started using Aperture.
Do you still have the original iPhoto Libraries, to check, if you really imported everything?

missing masters in aperture , getting an yellow  exclamation mark ,

Q: Is there a way to place an image at 100% without having to do that extra resizing step?
I think here you want your images to fit in the full page size frame automatically. For this you can try the follwoing steps:
    1. Create a new doc
    2. Goto Object menu and choose Frame fitting options
    3. Select Autofit and from Fitting drowdown, select "Fit content to frame". Refer the screenshot below:
After this you images should automatically fit in the entire page placeholder frames. Please let me know if this does not work or if the problem you are facing is different and I did not understand your problem correctly.

  • Experts: library consolidation, duplicates, and missing originals

iPhoto Jedi's: here the challenge. I've got 3 iPhoto libraries on 3 machines. They all need to be consolidated into one master library. One of the libraries now has missing originals, but some of them were backed up, some not. I attempted to import one of the missing originals from a backup, it came in, but the old preview stayed, and it didn't pop the duplicate image warning.
So... what's the best way to merge libraries, and not end up with a zillion duplicates?
    Thanks in advance.

The only way to merge libraries, including all versions and metadata is with iPhoto Library Manager ($20) and its Merge command. This can be set to avoid duplicates.

  • Missing Projects in Aperture 2.1.4 after database rebuild?

Had issues when editing a recent import in Aperture 2.1.4. I looked for help and followed this: I repaired permissions on my HD, then rebooted. I still had the same behaviors when working on the images so I tried the Aperture "Consistancy check". It said it was running a "Vacuum of Database" and then reopened Aperture. I decided to "rebuild the database" and finished my editing on that Project. Before I did the rebuild I did a Time Machine back up to an external HD. After I did the rebuild I did a Vault update. (My Library is Managed.) Later when searching for some photos that I had imported last year from my iPhone, I discovered that several iphone projects were missing. I searched the Library with Keywords, dates, etc and the files do not show up. I looked in deleted files from my last Vault. The only iphone files were ones that I had deleted back in Sept 2012. I did a spotlight search on my harddrive but could not locate files by names.  I am talking about hundreds of photos in these projects. I know that I did some keywording and some have Instagram tag.  Also, when I open Aperture it says that 466 Projects have not been backed up to the Vault and 19 files. (There has been one Project with those 19 files imported since the last Vault update.) In Aperture it says that I have 465 Projects and 27,578 images. The size of the Library is 180.28GB. The last Vault update is 154.7 GB. I think that the missing projects were imported at times from Sept 2012 through Dec. 2012.
How do I see if they are in a previous Time Machine backup and restore only those missing projects to Aperture? Is there a way to check the contents of my lst Vault back up? (I also do not want to lose my two recent imported and editted projects.)
I did just look at the contents (Show Package Contents) of my Aperture Library in the Finder and I can see the Library Folder in the my organization where they reside in Aperture and the icons with the named missing projects. I know that I should not mess with the package, but does this indicate that they are still on my harddrive?  I also see some Albums that I remember making in the Dec 2012 Folder. They no longer show up in Aperture. It seems that somehow I ended up with an earlier version of my Aperture Library after my troubleshooting. I would love to get back to the earlier version of the Library and then add in the last two projects and edits that I added in Feb 2013. Those two projects, including the one that I was working on when all this began are still there, but I am at the very least missing many hundreds of photos of my family and travels that did reside in those Projects. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (I need to upgrade to Aperture 3 asap, but need to solve this first.)

Yes, I have inadvertently discovered I have the same problem with TIFFs I created by scanning in some very old photographs as TIFFs three years ago. I did extensive work on the old photos to restore their quality. Three years ago, everything seemed to work fine including printing the TIFFs. I just discovered Aperture 2.1.4 and Aperture 3 can't find the managed masters even though I verified they are in the libraries!
Like you I don't need to salvage the masters since I can drag them out of the library; I want to export the versions so I have my retouching work saved. At least I can see the final work in Aperture 2 but in Aperture 3, all is white or black previews with its managed masters not found.

  • Missing photos in Aperture 3.1.3

I opened Aperture today to discover that all of my photos that are older than about 6 months are now missing from the library. The thumbnail/preview of missing photos show as an outline now. If I right click on a missing photo and select Show In Finder, I will see this error:
"The file (name) could not be found because the volume on whioch it resides is currently offline.
    Volume: Macintosh HD"
It seems that iPhoto, with an older set of photos, is working normally still. This is a somewhat new iMac that was created from a Time Machine backup from a MacBook Pro. I haven't really changed anything and the photo library has always been on the same local HD.
Any ideas? Should I just go back to iPhoto?!

Well, it seems that I just found part of the answer here. The path to the files in my iPhoto library has changed somehow - perhaps due to an update.
    /User/username/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/... etc
    ...has changed to...
    /User/username/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Masters/... etc
File > Locate Referenced Files... will allow me to find and fix this but it seems like only one photo at a time. Is there a better way to do this?

  • Missing Project in Aperture 3

I've had a project go completely missing and I'm stumped as to what happened or how to find it. I did all my work on the project and organized it, with 3 others, under a folder. I created a slideshow and I selected some images and posted them to my Mobile Me Gallery. I've done nothing else to the project, but now the entire project is missing, and the images aren't showing anywhere on Aperture.
The Mobile Me gallery online still includes images from my missing project.
    help?

Hi Tony, thanks for the welcome.
I've searched and I still have only the one library. The library is about 120GB so it would be hard to create without noticing.
Luckily I did find the project on my backup, so I didn't lose it completely. It was an accident that I discovered that it was missing at all. The photos were taken less than a month ago, and my backup was from mid-September. So my issue is trying to figure out how it could have disappeared at all, because I certainly don't want it to happen again.
With the size of my library it is going to be difficult to maintain multiple iterations of my Aperture library. My plan was to maintain two backups - one at home and one at work on external hard drives. But if I have to plan for multiple versions going back into time I will. Maybe a Time Machine backup at work will be the answer. I have been using SuperDuper backup and my laptop is 4 years old and not all that powerful.

  • Missing images is Aperture Browser

I have a Project  with muptiple images and a number of them appear only as a grey box in Browser mode, but appear normally in Viewer mode.
On those images that appear as they should, there is a small symbol in the lower right corner with a gray rectangle and arrow pointing up and to right; however, on those with no image in the Browser, the lower right symbol has a yellow triangular (caution?) symbol, with the same arrow pointing up and to right.  This has occurred only in one Project.
I assume something I've done has caused this, but can't figure it out.   Appreciate some help.

You have referenced masters and some of the masters are missing (as far as Aperture is concerned).
You need to spend some tie witht he manual all this stuff is explained there, See Understanding Badge Overlays
These are the three badges that deal with referenced files:
So now the question is did you realize you had referenced masters?

  • Help needed - Missing Files in Aperture

    Hi All:
A quick question: I initially imported RAW files in to a new project. During some time I was doing adjustment to these files, a subset of these files disappeared from the browser (I checked under "all image library" and the project). I can't remember if I inadvertantly deleted them from the Library.
However, the strange thing is that I still have these files in the Aperture Library (I have checked and confirmed that they are physically in the Library and they are not referenced files).
How would I bring these files back to be shown in Aperture ?
    Thanks,

I wanted to ask anyone (close to this issue) if they've had the problem I've had after upgrading to ver. 1.5.3. Once this upgrade was done, and I opened Aperture, I noticed that lots of photos seems to be missing. specificly from July of 2006 to current. These photos were stored in several projects that I created simply listed as months (ie. 0701-Photos) meaning Jan of 2007 photos, etc.
These projects and their photos are not to be seen now. I'm hoping there're on my hard drive somewhere. I've tried to rebuild library but no luck.
    Help please from anyone?? Thanks!

  • Can I import edited photos (and their raw originals) from Aperture in groups, like 5-star images from a project?

I have 30,000 images in Aperture and it keeps crashing. I've run out of memory on my MacBook Pro running 10.8.6 and I want to switch over to Lightroom for all new photos and slowly migrate my best ones over to LR as well. I've edited many of my best shots already, probably 6000 or more, so I need to feel confident that cropping, editing, rating, and metadata will all migrate successfully.
Also, can I load the Lightroom itself onto an external hard drive and keep all my images off my laptop? If I edit them, do the edits remain on my laptop regardless of where the originals reside. I think that's the issue that I'm running into with Aperture:  edits stay on my laptop even though originals are on an external HD.
Thanks for your feedback on both of these matters.

Your photos can be on any hard disk, internal or external or network. If they are stored on an external hard disk, then when you import them into Lightroom, you select the ADD option and the photo will remain on your external hard disk. The edits are stored in your Lightroom catalog (as opposed to "remain on my laptop"). Once you import photos into Lightroom, you no longer want to manage them (move, copy, delete) using your operating system. You do all photo management in Lightroom.
If you transfer the photos properly, your edits, cropping, metadata, etc. will transfer to Lightroom, but I will leave the details to some expert on Aperture.
If I could offer some advice, I don't think you want to just transfer SOME of your photos to Lightroom. In my opinion, you want ALL of your photos managed by Lightroom, and not some in application 1 and some in application 2. This makes your life much easier when trying to find your photos, you don't have to think "Is this photo in Lightroom or is this in Aperture?"  (Note: this doesn't mean you have to import all the photos from Aperture into Lightroom in one HUGE operation; you can certainly do the importing in manageable sized groups)

  • Missing originals

Lightroom 2.7.  I downloaded 400 images from a job.  When I went to work on them a couple of days later, they were all "missing or offline" along with a couple hundred other images. I never erased them and I could still see the thumbnail.  I did not know what folder the originals were saved at until I read another discussion that said to click the ? and relink the photos.  I did it to one and it came back but sent the rest of the images to !.  Good think is now I know where the originals are and feel I can proceed with the photo job.
Anyone have any idea why and how this happened so that it never happens again?
    Thanks!

There are numerous reasons why you get the ? for missing images
Your images are stored on an external HD, and the drive letter has changed (Windows only)
You have used your operating system or an external program to move or rename the photos or the folder they are stored in
You have deleted the photos using your operating system or an external program (sounds like this didn't happen)
Advice ... if you must move or rename your photos or folders, do it inside of Lightroom. Better yet, develop a workflow that doesn't require moves or renaming.
Advice #2 ... learn how to use the Import dialog box so the photos are imported to the location that you want the photos to be in
Advice #4 ... (I forgot what number 3 is) Learn some Lightroom basics, because Lightroom is different than any other program you have used in the past. It works differently. I know what you're saying: How different can it be? Very different. Just because you have learned other photographic software, that doesn't mean you know how to use LR. The forums are littered with people who have found themselves in this situation, they think they know how to use LR and wind up getting in trouble. Do yourself a favor and find some of the many good videos and tutorials out there. Here's a good place to start: Dude, where are my photos?

  • Extracting jpeg's from LR when missing originals.

    Hi,
I've crashed 2 harddrives and they can not be recovered.  It's been a 2 week long horror fest.
Most of my photos were imported into Lightroom and I can still see the previews. But the originals are, of course gone. I've researched and see that LRViewer has helped people extract jpeg's from Lightroom (lower res) but this application is not working for me.  I even tried applying it to previews where the originals ARE on my harddrive and it still won't work. Message reads: Can't find previews SQlite database.
anyone have another way of doing this??? Please!!!
    I'm using Lightroom 3.0!!!
    There must be a way...

Are you sure you're opening the catalog with the "[catalogname] Previews.lrdata" right next to it? LRViewer won't work if you open a backup catalog, which does not have the preview folder next to it.
It works fine for me with an LR3 catalog.

  • Upon upgrade to 11 Iost a lot of songs with the!. I've looked thru normal proceedures tried a few with no sucess, can I ever recover the missing originals, can I undo 11 ?

after upgrade to 11, I lost hundreds of songs, searched files seems 11 has maybe deleted them, tried several different things including recovery software, still no luck, can I undo 11?

Focus on a single file that shows with an exclamation mark. Select it, press CTRL+I to Get Info, click No when prompted to locate the file, and look at the location given on the summary tab. Now use Windows search to locate the file by searching for files with the same filename. Post back both paths and I can suggest a resolution. In the unlikely event that the original has really vanished rolling back to an earlier version of iTunes won't fix anything.

  • Missing adjustments in aperture photos

Photos in certain my albums/projects have lost all flags, adjustments and captions (but not keywords).  Others, including adjustments created earlier and later, are fine.  I tried rebuilding permissions but no success.  Help!!

I'm not actually sure as I haen't used stacks (at least knowingly) - and I have a referenced library.  The point is, why can I see adjustments in otyher projects/albums and not these?  Wouldn't it be all or nothing?
    Thanks!

  • Missing originals from ibook

I have an external hard drive that belongs to a good friend with backups of photos a friend took from several years ago.  Among the backups is an iphoto book she created for me.  I want to take those images and copy them to my own desktop or a CD/flashdrive so I can print enlargements, but they aren't in the iphoto library at the appropriate date they were taken.  Is there a way to retrieve them via the ibook itself or are they somehow in the library but hidden?

Thanks LarryHN, but my problem is, those photos didn't originate in my own photo library and they don't appear on the hard drive photo library either -- only as part of the album created as an ibook.  Is there some way for me to select the photos from the book individually and move them?  Is that what you're recommending?  Sorry to be so dumb -- and thanks again.

  • IPhoto library-file deleted - and originals missing in Aperture....

Just moved my Aperture-library to my new iMac. Unfortunately almost all pics came from my old iPhoto-library which is gone now.
I can't do anything but look at the pictures. Can't edit, export, share etc.
When trying to e.g. export a file Aperture says 'The selected original image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again.'.
Don't ask about the backup from Time Machine - that too is gone...
    Now what?
    Thanks.
    Thomas

How did you import your old iPhoto photos? And with what Aperture version?
Before the unified Aperture - iPhoto library has been introduced, it was possible to import an iPhoto library as referenced. This left all originals in the iPhoto library, so iPhoto continued to work, but Aperture could use the master files. Is that the way you imported your iPhoto library, with the master files in there original location?
When trying to e.g. export a file Aperture says 'The selected original image is either offline or not found. Please reconnect it and try again.'.
That is the typical error message, when Aperture cannot access the original files. And Aperture wil not be able to do anything with your images, unless you restore the missing originals.
Just moved my Aperture-library to my new iMac.
Where did you move your Aperture library from ? From an older mac?  From a backup?
Did Aperture work on that old Mac and could access the originals?
Do you still have that old mac, and is there any chance that recovery software could retrieve the missing original files on that mac?
Sometimes Aperture reports originals as missing, even if they are managed inside the Aperture library.
You can find out, where Aperture is looking for the original files, if you select some image files in the browser and use Aperture's command "File > Locate Referenced Files".
In the panel that opens, you can see the path to missing files in the upper right corner below the thumbnail.
What do you see, when you use that command?
