Missing photos in preview

I have a large photo book (100 pages, 647 images) in iphoto 11.  I'm having two problems.  First, when I export to iDVD or iMovie, 3 photos are missing from the files.  The pix are on double spread page layouts, and only some of the small photos (not the one that traverses pages) are missing.  The same photos are absent from a slideshow of the book and from the Preview and PDF.  So, I can't order the book because I can't get preview to include these photos.
I'm using the latest version of iPhoto (all up to date), but have not upgraded to Lion.
I've checked the photos and they all work (used the "edit" function to check).  So, I know they are not corrupted.
I've also removed the .plist file for iphoto and that didn't solve the issue.
Any other ideas??

Are you able to edit or view in full screen those "missing" photos in iPhoto?  What do you see when you try?
Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Select the options identified in the screenshot.
Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Missing photos on PDF preview dust cover

After assembling a hard cover book and previewing the PDF the photos on the dust cover front and back are missing. I really need to order the book today. Thx

You are missing one or more photos - youprobably have a page background that requires a photo which is behind a page with photos on it - all pages must either have a photo or be a color - if you have a gray background it requires a photo - look through the book carefully and be sure to look at the background on any full page photos - you will find one or more missing photos

  • Missing photos -- dashed lines

    I recently installed iPhoto 6.
In the default, "organize" view, several pictures have now been replaced by rounded-square outlines in dashed lines. The pic titles are still there, but no pics. Double-clicking to edit these missing photos brings up a blank screen in edit mode.
I'm not even able to delete these squares.
    What's up?

Select one of the files in the Originals folder and bring up the Info window on it, Command-I. Then under Default Application assign Preview and click on the Change All.. button. If that doesn't help check my posts in this thread.

  • Is there any way to turn missing photos back into printable jpegs?

Using LR 5.  Lost about 1500 jPeg images due to corrupted disk drive.  However, LR5 still displays a remarkably sharp image under "missing photos".  Is there any way to turn these back into printable jpegs?  These are family vacation photos that had not yet been backed up to additional drives.

You want to extract LR previews as images.  Googling for this shows several links:

  • Missing photos in Aperture 3.1.3

I opened Aperture today to discover that all of my photos that are older than about 6 months are now missing from the library. The thumbnail/preview of missing photos show as an outline now. If I right click on a missing photo and select Show In Finder, I will see this error:
"The file (name) could not be found because the volume on whioch it resides is currently offline.
    Volume: Macintosh HD"
It seems that iPhoto, with an older set of photos, is working normally still. This is a somewhat new iMac that was created from a Time Machine backup from a MacBook Pro. I haven't really changed anything and the photo library has always been on the same local HD.
Any ideas? Should I just go back to iPhoto?!

Well, it seems that I just found part of the answer here. The path to the files in my iPhoto library has changed somehow - perhaps due to an update.
    /User/username/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/... etc
    ...has changed to...
    /User/username/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Masters/... etc
File > Locate Referenced Files... will allow me to find and fix this but it seems like only one photo at a time. Is there a better way to do this?

  • Relinking missing photo/exclamation mark

I have a photo that "can't be found" in LR and has one of those exclamation marks i the top right of the photo.
I have clicked on it and pressed the Locate button on the pop up message and comes up with a Folder "iPod photo cache". clicking on the Folder, it has a series of empty Folders numbered F00-F50, an Apple tv photo database and a photos database. I don't see my photo anywhere. I have clicked on a number of the folders and they all appear empty.
I thought that the idea was that the missing photos would appear so can you tell me how to find and re link it.
Seeing that the file is called IPOD Photo cache, I have plugged my iPod into the laptop but that does not appear to make any difference and the exclamation mark is still present and cannot find the photo.
Hope there is a simple trick that I am missing here and that you can point it out to me.
    thanks

Missing photos don't just automatically appear when you choose the find missing photo option. You have to browse to the folder where you know the image is located and select the image. This will show Lightroom where the image is located on your hard drive. When the browser window opens in showing you the folder structure for the preview cache. These are previews are generated by Lightroom to facilitate the editing process. You need to use that dialogue box to navigate to the folder containing the real image and select the image. If you have a missing image, it's possible that you also have a missing folder. If you right-click on the missing folder you can choose to update the folder location. But again, you have to navigate to where the folder is located. Lightroom isn't going to find it automatically.

  • Missing photo has dotted line border

missing photo has dotted line border

What is it, that you see or don't see? Empty rectangles surrounded by a dashed border like marching ants? In the browser or the viewer?
If you do not see the images in the browser, then you have a problem with your thumbnails, not your previews. Try to select all of the empty rectangles and select (from the main menu bar)
         Photos > Generate Thumbnails.
If you want to recreate your Previews, in case they do not show properly in the Browser, hold down the options-key while you select "Update Previews".

  • Having an issue with "offline or missing" photos in LR

Im trying to save space on my Mac so I have moved some photos to an external drive.  But now LR will show a preview of the pics, but can't find them for editing, etc.  I was under the impression that LR could locate them on an external drive so that I could work on them without taking up so much space on my hard-drive.  Is this correct, or am I just wishin?!?!?!  If this is the case, how can I get LR to find those photos?  And as a disclaimer, I'm super simple minded when it comes to the computer/tech stuff...so please explain in laymans terms (ok, idiot terms would be best!)
    Thanks!

You should have made the move of your images inside LR by drag and drop.
Now you have broken the links to the images that LR knew by moving them outside via finder, and now you need to tell LR where the new destination is.
Hopefully you have not changed the folder structure.
Ctrl-click on the missing folder highest in your folder hierarchy and relink it to the new destination on the external drive.
Then all questionmarks for missing images should disappear.
Should you have changed your folder structure during your finder-move you have to relink individual images, but can click on "find nearby missing photos".

  • Missing photos. Won't show me a path to Locate Photos

    Hello
I have 3 folders marked as missing. When I click on the question mark, and say Find Missing Folder, it brings up the Mac Finder window, with a list of all the contents in my external hard drive. It does not navigate me to the missing photos. When I search for the name of the folder, nothing comes up, nor when I search for names of individual missing photos, by searching for the IMG_xxx numbers. These supposedly missing folders are on my
external drive called ``Backup'', which is weird, because I usually don't import photos to that drive, i import them into my external ``Photo Library'' drive and make a backup copy to the ``Backup'' drive (I use Super Duper, which does a copy-erase thing, where it erases the backup drive and writes over it with the new stuff). Maybe I made a mistake and opened Lightroom from my Backup drive one day and imported to there, and then when I made a backup of all my photos, by copying the ``Photo Library'' onto the ``Backup'' drive, it didn't save my photos because they got erased since Super Duper would have replaced what was on the Backup drive with what is on the Photo Library drive. That is my fear. Because I can't think of anything else. But it's strange because I never go to my backup drive. I always open Lightroom from the icon on the bottom of my desktop..... But I have looked all over the place for these photos or these folders. and no luck.
But shouldn't my photos be somewhere if I can see them in Lightroom in thumbnail view (or even normal view, but they all say this photo is missing......? They must have been saved somewhere on one of my drives right?
    Any guidance appreciated. Thanks.
I'm using Lightroom 4 and an iMac.

From what is shown in Lightroom the missing folders were originally on the backup drive.
You need to manually need tell Lightroom where those files/files are now by using finder, it will not automatically tell you where they are now.
They are currently missing in Lightroom as they have been moved elsewhere, the files/folder were renamed outside of Lightroom or they have been deleted.
If you can find the files and relink them, then everything will be restored.
Though, if as you suggest the files were originally imported to the backup drive and then your backup process overwrote that drive then I am afraid you are out of luck.
Lightroom may still have lower res previews of those files in the "YourCatalogName Previews.lrdata" folder.
You may be able to recover those previews as last resort. (Search this forum for the process of preview extraction)
A Lightroom catalog does not contain the actual full-res files (It keeps a link to the file location, editing history/steps and metadata etc within the catalog)
Depending on how long ago your backup did the overwrite you may be able to also run Undelete software on that backup drive to recover some files. (If your backup overwrites each day since Oct 26th there would be a slim chance of recovery.)

  • What are missing photos

Besides my main iPhoto library, I have a secondary library that holds 74.000 pix.
I have now run this (huge)library through Duplicate Anihilator and it found (besides tons of duplicates which I then erased) a few thousand "missing photos".
    a) what are they?
    b) what should I do about them?
    Thanks!
    Pol

Pol, missing photos are probably photos, were the original image file is missing. try to edit or export one of them, if you cant, the original is missing. You have only the preview of the version left. Sometimes you can reconnect the originals by rebuilding the library with iPhoto library manager. If not, drag the thumbnails of the images in question to a folder on your desktop to save the previews as jpegs.

  • When previewing images by clicking on the thumbnail in an Event for example, I've been finding that many images preview in a 'zoomed in' way so only a small part of the photos is previewed in a highly magnified view.

When previewing images by clicking on the thumbnail in an Event for example, I've been finding that many images preview in a 'zoomed in' way so only a small part of the photos is previewed in a highly magnified view.
Initially I could find no cause. Then I tried right click - Edit and on the affected images, always get this warning:
"Image Cannot Be Edited - This photo was previously edited with another application or with an early version of Iphoto. Duplicate this photo to edit it." and a "Duplicate To Edit" Button is displayed.
The external Editor defined for iPhoto is Adobe Photoshop Elements.
Now, I reckon the MUST be others out there affected by this same apparent Preview bug, yet my searches have not revealed any answers.  Also seems impossible to find a contact number for adobe???

  • Help please - unable to open missing photos 'browse' dialogue box

    Hi All,
new to the forum, but long time LR user.
I have a problem with LR v.3.4.1 I have a few missing photos (quite a few actually) in my catalogue from when I moved hard drives in v1.  I jumped from v.1 to v3.  But used to be able to find them still.
Now when I click the ? icon the browse dialogue box won't open.  Double clicking only switches from thumnail to full size - though there are no index images of these photos.
I've checked the drives, the images still exist.  I tried re-iporting the images to see if that would bring them up as duplicates, but the LR finder would not see any images there.
Since switching from v.1 to v.3 I have done quite a few shoots, and I'd be sad (no mortified!) to loose either bit of editing work.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    Many thanks
    Damian

I should say, this is the case for both my Macbook Pro running v10.5.8
and my new today, iMac running v10.6.7

  • How to reset paths (NOT missing photos)

I have created a new folder with all my photos. Within it are individual folders named by year (2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009...).
I have several old catalogs with photos pointing to different files on several external HDs.  I want to relink them nice and neatly so that they all point to the photos on my newly created folder on a dedicated external HD.
How can I relink all the photos? I've searched all over the internet but the only information that I can find are those related to "missing photos and question marks in the corner (and not just "resetting paths" as in Expression Media/iView).   I have attempted to FORCE the question mark and relink it that way but Lightroom will not find nearby files. It only finds photos taken on the same day.
There must be some easy way like in Expression Media/iView to simply reset the path, i.e., manually relink in big batches (all photos in one folder).
I'd be so grateful for any insight and solutions anybody could offer me.

You've a couple of routes - for individual images, or for folders.
With individual images, it depends on the image being missing. If it has a little question mark or exclamation mark in the corner in grid view, click the missing file marker and point to where the photo is now located. Ensure "Find Nearby" is ticked, and press OK. LR will read the filenames of other missing files and try to find them too. This route is no use if the image is not missing.
With folders, you can right click any folder. You get a question mark if the folder is missing, and right click - "Find Missing Folder". If the folder is not missing, the context menu is "Update Folder Location". In each case you can now point to the new folder location.
To make it easy on yourself, right click a parent folder and update its location. Its child folders will then be updated too.
    Does that help?

  • Missing photos in iPhoto '08 v. 7.1.3

This is hardly a "new" topic on this discussion but after trying every recommendation I have been able to find, I am still no further forward so would appreciate any other suggestions that might be forthcoming.
When iPhoto is launched it shows, at the foot, 17,528 items. Click on a thumbnail and one of two thing happens: either, and this is the good one, the photo launches normally or, and this is the other, up pops the greyed out area with the exclamation mark. If I understand that correctly it either means that the original photo is "missing" or that iPhoto is unable to link to it.
An Info check on the iPhoto library shows 12.86 GB. However, on the originals folder only it shows 5.49 GB for 7,506 items.
I have tried all the rebuild facilities offered by iPhoto. No change.
I have installed iPhoto Library Manager and tried to rebuild the library using that: it hangs, showing "getting photo information"...which it doesn't. I had to close it using Force Quit.
I have used the "extract photos" facility in that program - it tells me that 5,589 photos have been extracted.
None of the figures tie up - and I'm not even clear if they are supposed to do so.
The real mystery to me is that the "missing" photos seem entirely random: in a group of, say 10, photos which were imported together 1 or 2 might be missing, all might be, none might be. There is just no discernible "pattern" to the problem.
So, two questions, really: (1) any bright ideas as to what to try next or what might be causing this and (2) if my library is terminally corrupted then it seems to me I should start a brand new library using the extracted photos as the basis then add others from CDs and DVDs, but in doing so is there a way of avoiding duplication?
    Thanks in anticipation...

To create a library from scratch - which is what you need to do as you do have a damaged library:
To create and populate a new library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • How do I find my hidden/missing photos?

On my iPhone4 my Camera Roll is showing 925 photos, which I have recently backed up to my computer. However iTunes shows I have 2103 photos using 4.47 gb. On my phone under settings>general>usage>photos & camera it shows that I have used 4.6 gb. And on my phone under settings>general>about>photos it shows 2,065.
This is my 2nd iPhone, which replaced the 1st iPhone4 when it had a problem and stopped working.  I am missing a whole lot of pictures, and so the over 2000 number makes sense.  I just don't know how to find the hidden/missing photos.
Can anyone help me with this?

I think your numbers add up --- as follows:
iTunes says you have 2.103 photos.  I claim they consist of:
925 photos on your Camera Roll
178 photos in your Photo Library
1,000 photos in your Photo Stream
    2,103 total photos
If you're having trouble finding the Photo Stream photos, maybe this will help:
