Missing PhotoShop Files

I am using (trying to) Photoshop CC on a new Mac Pro with OSX 10.9.2.  I keep on getting a message to reinstall the application because some files are missing.  Repeated reinstallation is no help.  Any suggestions, or should I just go back to Photoshop CS6?

That might be the last one, not sure as you have a mac.  If you click Help/updates does it show it is up to date?
You might reset the preferences as it may not be missing files, just confused.  Start PS and immediately hold down option/cmd/shift keys.  If fast enough you will get a reset window.  If you see splash screen you are too late.

  • How to use the same element in different photoshop files?

It occurs to me often that I use the same element in different photoshop files, a header or footer shown in the example below. So when the footer changes in one document, I need to change this footer in every other single document.
Is there a possibility to use some kind of template, one single document,  that can be placed in different files , which is still editable afterwards?
    Thanks in advance.
    I'm using Photoshop CS6

In a single document you can have several pages and these pages may have headers and footers that share smart objects.  If you replace the contents of the an embedded smart object on one page page that is shared on an other page the pages you will see both pages contents are changed. For they share the common object.   It is also possibly to have independent smart object layers. It depends how you create the layers in the single document.
Example one sharing a smart object hi-light a smart object layer and use menu layer>Duplicate Layer... This will create a second smart object layer that share a common smart object. Each layer has is own associated transform. Do it again and you will have three layers the share a common smart object. So you can use each layer associated transform to position and size the layers contents. Make a picture package for example. When you hi-light any of the three smart layers and you use menu Layer>Smart Objects>Replace Contents... all three layers contents will be replace with the new smart object.  Care must be taken to replace the smart object with an identical size object for only the object is replaced the three associated transform for the three layers are not replaced or changed.
Example two independent smart objects  hi-light a smart object layer and use menu layer>Smart Objects>New Smart Object via Copy.  This will  create a second smart object layer that has it own embedded smart object copy.  Do it again and you will have three all have independent embedded smart object that are identical.  However they do not have to remain identical.  For example if the first smart object layer was created by using ACR to open a RAW file as a smart object layer the embedded object is a copy of the raw file and its associated RAW conversion settings.  Double clicking on one of the smart object layers and you will see ACR open on its embedded RAW file with the embedded RAW conversion setting.  Changing these settings will update the layer smart object content with new ACR setting and pixel when you click OK in ACR. Repeat for the third and you will find you have three different raw conversions in Photoshop you can mask and blend together to bring out detail.
I think what your missing is that a smart object contains a copy of the original object.  Changing the original after creating a smart object layer in document will not effect the smart object layer at all. Its independant from the original having a copy of the original. Only changes to the smart object layer and its embedded smart object effect smart object layers.

  • I can no longer open PSD Photoshop files on Preview

I can no longer open PSD Photoshop files on Preview since I installed Snow Leopard on my White MacBook. Whenever I double click a PSD file, it opens in Photoshop.
I used to force PSD files to be opened with Preview by "Get Info" (command + I ) and then Changing the option "open with" to Preview.
I also tried draggin the PSD file onto Preview, nothing happened.
Did Snow Leopard stop PSD support, or I'm missing something??

No, I can still open psd files in Preview, no problem, from both Preview's "Open" dialog and by drag 'n drop onto its icon. It opens simple psd files without error, files with an alpha channel may or may not open correctly, layers will display the topmost layer, if that layer has a mask it displays incorrectly. In short, nothing seems to have changed.

  • Using Photoshop files with layers in iDVD

I prefer using my old DVD Studio Pro to iDVD, but since newer versions of Quicktime can't export to mpeg2 I'm forced to either use iDVD or buy a new version of DVDSP. Given that iDVD is already on my computer and DVDSP requires the purchase of the Final Cut Suite, I was wondering about how tweakable the menus and themes in iDVD are. Is there a way to create customized themes with your own menu pages with different shaped buttons, unique images and text? In DVDSP you could import Photoshop files and the file would retain the layers which would allow you to use layers as buttons, images, or text on you menu. Is there a way to do this in iDVD or am I out of luck? Thanks in advance!

any version of DVDSP contained "Compressor", which does the conversion of any iM project into the needed m2a, m2v streams for use in DVDSP... and no version of QT was able to export to mpeg2, except you tought that trick with some plug-ins, installed by DVDSP.... (?)
sure, you can customize menus, but not as flexibile as DVDSP; read the tutorials, or one of the "Missing Manuals" by David Pogue; import of PS-layers is not supported; iDVD is a consumer product.-

  • Photoshop files show as unix executable files

    Hi,
I've have a back-up drive with all my old files (the past 15 years). After I copied them over I noticed that most of them showed up as unix executable files. The most of the Quark files I was able to repair by adding .qxp. When I add the appropriate extension to my Photoshop files, (.tif, .eps) and then try to open them, PS won't recognize the files. Is there a fix to this. Unfortunately the originals have disappeared with a drive that crashed.
    Thanks for any help.

Adding file extensions for unique application-types will work fine as long as there's an entry for LaunchServices to reference to - add the .qxd extension will "make" them Quark files, for example. The more generic types are going to be the problem, as there are many applications listed in LaunchServices that can open TIFF and EPS files. If you had files that you could absolutely identify as raw Photoshop files, adding a .psd extension would most likely work for those.
Maybe I just need to let all those files go...
Since it seems that only the resource fork has been munged, the files are probably fine - just missing the resource fork with the Type/Creator code and the preview info that Photoshop stores there.

  • Updating a Photoshop File

I imported a photoshop file and started creating all of my states... I now want to change the logo that I have within my PSD file. What is the best way to do this? I tried updating the logo in PS without changing the layer name or anything. Pressing Save and then refresh in FC. However, that didn't do the trick.
Is there something i'm missing? Maybe there is another way I can replace the logo in FC?

    Hi dragotron,
When you import a .psd into Flash Catalyst, you're not creating a permanent link between the two files -- so editing the original .psd won't affect anything in Catalyst.  In the final shipping version of Catalyst 1.0, you should be able to bring the Catalyst project back into Photoshop to edit the graphics (via a Photoshop plugin) -- similar to the Modify > Edit in Adobe Illustrator workflow you currently see in beta 2.
For beta 2, your best bet is to make the changes in Photoshop, drag those layers into a new .psd, import that into your existing Catalyst project, and then delete the old logo.  To import a .psd into an existing project, just choose File > Import > Adobe Photoshop File while your project is already open.
    Hope that helps!

  • Photoshop file size Discrepancy

    Hey Guys.
I have a photoshop file which while editing states what I believe is the flat/layered file sizes down the bottom left of the screen of 116.7M/255.4M.
But when I save the file Finder shows the file size as being 1.53GB.
Is this normal? What am I missing? See below screen grab

The size in Photoshop is pretty accurate.
But it has nothing to do with file size.
    Please read the documentation again.
Files are compressed, and different file formats will compress differently, and the amount of compression is very much related to the image content.
That's why Photoshop never displays file sizes except for estimates in the JPEG and the Save For Web dialogs.
The sizes displayed in Photoshop's status bar and info palette are the size of the document in memory, or the flattened size of the image (uncompressed).

  • Color issues between photoshop files and PDF's

i create a lot of PDF's from photoshop photographic files in order to email to clients for review. when i look at the PDF's, the colors look flat and dull and dark compared to the original photoshop files (I'm using CS3 and Acrobat Professional 8.0). I have the color space settings the same in both (ProPhoto RGB). I usually do the "save as smallest file size" so the PDF is emailable (there are often many pages, created from photoshop contact sheets). There is no option in Bridge to synchronize the color settings between the creative suites because i don't have all the suite applications. i've tried saving the PDF with the "PDF/X-3" option, but that doesn't seem to work either. is there something i'm missing?

    Yeah - don't do that!
I would recommend you check with the Photoshop support area for more details...

  • Missing Adobe file

    Hi guys,
I kinda have a problem. I used to have Photoshop CS 2 installed on my Pb and for some dumb reason I threw it all in the bin. And the next thing I did was typing "adobe" in finder and throwing all of them in the bin as well. (Not fully aware what the heck I was doing.....just thought that I had to fully erase all the traces).
No I have a document I want to open and it's a PDF. I downloaded Adobe Reader (freeware) and after installation it said that it could not open the program due to a missing adobe file. I had to reinstall it but the same thing happens again.
    How do I fix this?

    Hi Allan,
that's exactly what I did. I downloaded Adobe Reader from Adobe.com.....and some other places too....like versiontracker.....and they all ended up saying that some files were missing......what is wrong?
Yeah I didn't know about preview.........but still.......I would rather have the problem with the missing files fixed.
    Thanks for the replies guys

  • Why am I getting Photoshop File Error -1?

I am using Encore CS 5.1 on a Mac Pro 2012 along with Photoshop CC 2014. I created a dvd for a dance recital we did recently and as a favor for the studio owner, I was attempting to do a flash version that I intended to leave online for her.
When I pressed "Build", Encore began it's process but almost immediately showed the following message:
    "Photoshop File Error -1"
    I used the following settings:
    FORMAT: F4V
    PRESET: 1280X720 widescreen
FLASH VIDEO FILE: Keep with Flash SWF
I used Encore templates and changed the backgrounds of all of them to suit my project. I made sure to make the bottom layer of each menu a background just like the template.
Is there something I'm missing to get this to work right?

Hi Stan, this is a follow up to your thoughts above. Here are the steps I took in an attempt to identify the issue:
    TESTING PROCEDURES
    1. Change Menu audio file names in encore-no spaces-lowercase (I created audio for each menu)
    2. Change menu names-shorten,no space, lowercase
    3. change timeline name-no spaces, lowercase
    4. change audio & video name-lower case, no spaces
By doing all the above, I was getting the same error message. Then I tried one last thing: I removed all the Menu Audio items. This was the only way I was able to create the flash version of the dvd. After it's creation, I went back to the audio and changed the actual file names (outside of Encore) to menu1, menu2, menu3 and so on. I then re-imported them into Encore and yet again I received the error message.
I conclude that adding audio to the Motion menus seems to be problematic to creation of the Flash version. One other piece of info: The audio was all in .aiff format.

  • Photoshop File Compatibility

Why doesn't lightroom recognize Photoshop files that are not saved with maximum compatibility checked on the save dialog? Almost all of my psd's have been saved w/o max comp. and now I can't view them in Lightroom. In addition to the pain of having to resave all these files, they will take up significantly (I think) more disk space. Am I missing something?

Bob is right. There are far too many things that can reside in a Photoshop
PSD file with compatibility turned off that Lightroom knows nothing about,
layers, layer masks, layer effects, etc. With compatibility on Photoshop
generates a fattened very of the image and places that in the file along
with all of the other stuff (layers, etc.) so that programs that are not
Photoshop stuff aware can at least see and display the file.
Do a batch update of them and turn on compatibility in the preferences.

  • How to view Photoshop files are saved in the iPhoto library in Bridge?

I was very happy to see that photoshop files are now a supported file in iPhoto. However I was really bummed to see that once those files are placed in iPhoto they can't be viewed in Bridge. Does anyone know a way to fix this?

Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

  • Error in exporting photoshop file

We have several copies of After Effects being used in the office.  Both myself and another user have encountered a problem saving as photoshop layers.  It gets 87% or so into it and then gives the error; "error in exporting photoshop file" in the info window.  Any thoughts?

I don't think expressions should have any influence on teh matter. They are just another way of formulating an animation stream value just like keyframes. Icould think of a few things:
    - The new pixel aspect ratio handling in CS4. Due to the conversion, something may happen to the source footages.
    - Layer styles. this may cause a "cyclic use" of the Photoshop engine. Some of that stuff has changed quite a bit for CS4 to accomodate Ps Live 3D and teh new adjustment layer model.
    - Hardware accelerated effects. CS4 passes through OpenGL acceleration through all comps. Using an effect that uses it and happens to think it doesn#t need to fall back into software only mode, may cause a hiccup.
    - MediaCore. Similar to the previous, it uses hardware acceleration and may show weird behaviors, varying solely based on differences in graphics cards.
In particular for the last two points I would think it is what makes the difference between your systems. One of them has not enough juice on OpenGL, so it's "safe". I'd definitely investigate along those lines.

  • I have just downloaded a trial version of Photoshop Elements onto my Mac Book Pro (10.9.4) and attempted to use Elements on an existing Photoshop file.  I did not see the Elements option in my filter menu and need assistance

I have just downloaded a trial version of Photoshop Elements onto my Mac Book Pro (10.9.4).  The installation to my hard drive went fine so I attempted to use Elements on an existing Photoshop file.  I did not see the Elements option in my filter menu and am uncertain as to how to "add" the Elemnts to my existing filter choices.  Please advise.

I'm sorry but it's very hard to understand what you mean. What filter menu? In which program? Do you mean you're trying to use PSE as an external editor with some other asset management program? Which one?
