Missing playlist music

Last night I opened iTunes to listen to music. I clicked on a playlist to discover that all my ordinary playlists are empty (the smart playlists are fine). The music shows up in the main "music" section, however, it will takes hours (if not days) of work to fix this, even if I can remember which songs where in which play list. I do have a recent iTunes backup. Should I revert to that or will I then lose my latest purchases?
Many thanks.

I don't know if this will help, but try clicking on the triangle that is next to the link to the music store in the source list. When the triangle is pointing down, the purchased music playlist should appear underneath the music store link. You should also see the shopping cart if you have that option turned on.

  • Missing Playlists on Left Hand Menu

I recently upgraded to version 9 and found out that only 10 of 40 my playlists appear on the left hand column. Yet when I view the list on the right hand side, all the music is there.
How can I get the rest of the playlists to re-appear on the left hand side?
I'm using Windows XP on a desktop. Thanks.

The triangle next to the main Playlists folder is pointing down.
I set up a subfolder for a few streaming radio stations. The missing (and non-missing) playlists have not been put into a subfolder. They are all smart playlists (I don't know if that makes a difference).
I have the latest Itunes. Should I try re-installing?

Select a single song with a broken link, press CTRL+I to Get Info, cancel when asked to locate the track and take a look at the Summary tab. Post back where iTunes is looking for the file. It begins file://localhost
    Where is it really?
Please post back both paths so that I can make suggestions. Full paths please, exact spellings, you can replace your user name with <User> if needed.

    Hello there, dancingteacher.
Removing and re-installing iTunes can be a challenging endeavor and has to be done in a very particular way. The following Knowledge Base article provides a clear, step-by-step process of removing iTunes:

The "Additional Troubleshooting" section also includes a link to updates and conflicts with software for your Windows Operating System as well.

There is no legal way to do this-  You would need to be using the same AppleID (account)
As far as deleting the songs, in a situation like this, you should restore the iPod which will delete the songs as well as allow you to sync your own music.
For instructions on how to delete/add songs  it's best to check the manual:
    http://support.apple.com/manuals/#ipod
As far as restoring, you didn't mention what model you are using but just choose your model from here (they have step by step instructions):

  • Right-Click "Show In Playlist - Music" flips to top of Music library

    Hello Apple Discussions;
I would like to know if anyone has experienced the following:
On some occasions, while in Party Shuffle mode, or for that matter, in any playlist whatsoever, sometimes right-clicking on a track, selecting "Show in Playlist -> Music" seems to select the song for a microsecond, then flips to the very beginning of the playlist.
To recover, you must either search for the song, or go back to Party Shuffle and repeat the process. The second time you perform this operation it always works.
It seems to happen only randomly. I've also noticed that you can duplicate the process with Artists as well.
Select an Artist in the Browser and the behavior sometimes will occur within the browser's Artist sub-list.
This behavior has been in play since at least version 7 and continues to this day on my Macbook Pro.
    Thanks everyone who can help,
    aw75

    No longer an issue

  • Podcasts missing from Music Playlists

Front Row playlists used to show the same tracks as iTunes playlists, but in Leopard, Front Row fails to show podcast episodes in playlists. I just installed iTunes 8.0 and Front Row 2.1.6 on OSX 10.5.5, and the problem persists. What is the best workaround to let podcasts show up in Front Row playlists?
This question has been asked in other forums without reply, so I am hoping someone in the Front Row forum can address it:

    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7709315
Here's my workaround in iTunes 8, but it's kludgy and only works for audio podcasts:
    1. Set "Preferences > General > Import Settings..." to something sensible (I like MP3 / 16kbps mono / 11.025 kHz for small files and MP3-CD compatibility, you may prefer higher quality).
    2. Change "Podcast / is true" to "Genre / is / Podcast" in all smart playlists (right-click a smart playlist name, select "Edit Smart Playlist").
    3. Open a playlist with podcasts you want to work with Front Row. Use shift-click, option-click, or cmd-A to select all podcast episodes in the playlist.
    4. In the Advanced menu, select Create MP3 Version or Create AAC Version (as set in prefs). Wait for iTunes to rip copies of each item.
    5. To remove doubles from smart playlists, delete the originals from the main Podcast list or add "Podcast / is false" to smart playlists.
    6. Select the playlist from Front Row > Music > Playlists. It should now have your podcasts.
    7. Tell Apple you need Front Row to show podcasts in playlists again.
    http://www.apple.com/feedback/macosx.html
    Is there a better way?

I eventually noticed that when I plugged in the iPod, the sync preferences for Podcasts were set to something "odd" - they are now set to include ALL episodes of ALL podcasts.
Even so, they remain missing from any playlist, however, they are available on the iPod from the podcast menu.
The only way I've got the podcasts to appear in a playlist on the iPod was to do Get Info > Options > Media Kind change to Music (instead of Podcast). Then it all works OK.
iTunes 8 showed no such problems.

  • Missing Playlists or Music ? Possible Solution

Ocasionally Windows Media Center ( built into Vista/7 ) and WMP in XP ( rarely had it happen in XP ) updating ( even silently )
will corrupt the Permission Keys housing your music, it will be playable in MS software, but totally blocked in iTunes.
    Close iTunes
right click your Music Directory, select Properties, Click the Security Tab.
now in the entrys if you see crap like this
delete them, they will interfere with iTunes and cause both songs and playlists to dissapear, as well as apps and all kinds of crap.
reason being those permissions ( the UUID, and the Account unknown is a corrupted Permission ) is denying access to itunes to read the files and folders.
also you may have to also go into
    C:\Users\%Username%\Music\iTunes and rename the current " iTunes Library.itl " to " iTunes Librarybackup.itl "
go into " C:\Users\%Username%\Music\iTunes\Previous iTunes Libraries " take whatever backup library and copy it into the
    previous directory as " iTunes Library.itl "
literally this happens every couple of months imediatly after Windows Media Center updates ( i use it for Xbox streaming video, but it has no music librarys in its database ) and i have to go about this to fix iTunes syncing issues. only diffrence now is that i didnt notice WMC update last week, then it dawned on me to check
also sorry if my rambling is somewhat incoherant, lol

  • Moving music to a new PC missing playlists and burned music

My playlists and burned songs did not move from iPod to iTunes library when I moved to a new PC - just my purchased music came over. Is there a way to get those songs or do I have to start over...

Depending on the ipod, this is the way it works.
You need to move the music from you old computer to your new one first.
You can use home share, your backup copy, cds, dvds, etc.
