Missing playlists after moving to new computer

Greetings.
I am soliciting some help.
I have acquired a new computer (Vista, Lenovo desktop) and want to use iTunes on it. So, I downloaded and installed iTunes on it.
I keep all my iTunes things on an external drive (G drive) and so I connected it to the new computer and dragged/dropped the entire iTunes folder over. Then I set it to be the "iTunes Music folder location."
I seem to have lost the playlists (and I have lots of them - 120 GB of music/audio).
Is there a simple way to recover them. I really don't want to start over on playlists...
Bill

Bill, I am hoping you can help me out. I too have a new computer with the windows vista platform. i have my itunes music folder, itunes itl and xml on my external hard drive. i went ahead and started itunes on the new computer while holding down shift button to choose the library. when i did though it said it was locked, on a locked disc ,or dont have write permission to open this file. do you know a way of how to correct this, or how to get my music on the new computer with all playlists intact? (i noticed on some posts there was reference to ensuring external drive on old and new computer was same letter, that is also not the case with mine. was G on the old one, now this one has it as an F. any help you can provide i'd greatly appreciate

  • Events and project thumbnails missing after moving to new computer

I just helped a friend to move to a new Mac. I have copied all her personal data to her new computer, so iMovie Events and Projects are present in her new Movie folder. However, after opening iMovie '08, all events and project thumbnails are missing. How could this be? Is there perhaps some library file that keeps track of all this that I need to copy as well? Is there a way to re-link iMovie with the events folder?

    Try this:
First, make sure you've quit out of iMovie. Then go to your Movies Folder > iMovie Events > and then into the folder of the even that's giving you trouble. Drag the folder "iMovie Thumbnails" to your trash. Then open the folder "iMovie Cache" and drag the file "Cache.plist" to the trash. Restart iMovie. It should rebuild the thumbnails, and by regenerating the .plist file, it should have the data it needs to reed the new thumbnails into iMovie.
It worked for me. Hopefully it will work for you too.

  • Some purchased songs not playing after moving to new computer

I migrated my music library to a new computer by moving the entire iTunes folder from the old computer to an external hard drive then to the new computer. When I synced my iPhone using the new computer, everything synced fine the first time except for an error saying three songs could not be converted properly. When I try to play the songs in iTunes, it tells me they are not authorized to play on the new computer then asks me to login to authorize (even though I already had logged in beforehand). Even after logging in again they won't play. The tracks won't play on the iPhone either.
The three tracks are part of a full album which I purchased via the music store on my iPhone. They synced to my old computer with no problem. They show up in my purchases section in iTunes. And the other 8 tracks from the same album work just fine. And I just double checked, and the tracks no longer play on the old machine either. The only weird thing was that when I synced it appeared as though iTunes downloaded the songs again even though they were already in the existing library. Any idea what's going on here and how to fix it?

Assuming you are in a region where you are allowed to redownload your past music purchases, delete the broken tracks from your iTunes library (but do not hide from iCloud), close and then reopen iTunes, go to the iTunes Store home page, click the Purchased link from the Quick Links section in the right-hand column, then select Music and Not in My Library. You should find download links for your tracks there.
While downloading click the small download activity widget near the search box and make sure Allow Simultaneous Downloads is unticked. This may improve the reliability of subsequent downloads.
If the problem persists, or that facility is not yet available in your region, contact the iTunes Store support staff through the "Report a problem" links in your account history, or via Contact Support.

  • IWeb site opens blank site after moving to new computer

    Hi,
I copied my iWeb domain file to a new computer and now when I open it, it opens to a blank site as if I've never created anything before.
To make maters worse, in the process of following advice from others and deleting preference files etc, I've messed things up to the point that my iWeb site no longer works on the original computer . However, I have used Time Machine to retrieve a copy of the domain file from three months ago (when I can be sure it was working). Problem is, I can't get it to work on either computer.
I would appreciate any advice and direction as I've got over six years of work into this particular site.

What you need is the Domain.sites2 file from your old computer. It will be located in the User/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder. Copy it to the same folder on your new Mac replacing the domain file that is currently there.
If you don't have a copy of that file you'll have to rebuild your site from scratch. However, Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing image, audio and/or video files in the published site in the reconstruction of the site.

  • Program won't load after moving to new computer

    Hi,
So, I was having an incredibly difficult time on my mid 2010 iMac trying to use Premiere Pro CC after I had installed new memory.  The program stopped responding and/or anytime I tried to render or encode, the entire computer would restart.  It had been going on for way too long.  So now I am working on a brand new iMac, fresh from the factory.  I installed Creative Cloud and downloaded Premiere Pro CC, After Effects CC and Media Encoder CC. (i signed off CC on the other computer) I plugged in my external drive and opened the program.  I had to relink a bunch of the media because I hadn't been incredibly organized about filing it to begin with, but everything seemed to sync up.  Finally opened the project.
First - when trying to render a sequence, less than 1/4 the way in, an error comes up - "Unknown error in compiling movie."
Second - all the After Effects linked compositions are just color bars.  Big fat ones.  When I click "Edit Original" and it comes up in After Effects, there were regular color bars.  There was sound.  It did display what effects I had done to it in the effects window.  All effects that I have done have been to sharpen or to remove grain.  Nothing razzle-dazzly.
In trying to figure out how to deal with this, I tried to link up the file in After Effects with its original video file.  Couldn't figure that out.  Finally, got so frustrated I decided to export it to xml and download FCP X trial to see if I could work with it in that.  I exported the entire project using Export-> Final Cut Pro XML but was unable to open the file in FCP.  Both by opening the program and trying to open the file from inside there, and by clicking on the file and trying "Open With."  FCP was grayed out as an option.  I clicked the box to allow me access to all the applications and it still wouldn't allow me to do it.  So I decided that maybe something went wrong with the export.
I have now gone back into Premiere to try to export again but now NONE of the video files will load and "The Application is not Responding."
I am perplexed!  Can anyone help me?!

Attempted to uninstall Quicktime. The uninstall will not finish, saying it encountered a fatal error. Quicktime will not run, either.
when a QuickTime uninstall throws that message at folks, it's usually best to try completely scraping the itunes and QuickTime program files and installation configuration information from the PC, and doing a careful staged reinstall afterwards.
try the technique in the following post. (it includes instructions on what to do if Add/Remove isn't letting you uninstall one of the programs.)

  • Missing Mail after transfer to new computer

    Hello,
My parents were using an old iMac running 10.3.9 so I gave them a "newer" old iMac, running 10.4.11. They use multiple users and I transferred everything from their old computer to the newer one. For mail, I transferred the "mail folder in the library and the mail.plist from the preferences folder in the library. My father's email account works fine and looks exactly the same.
However, my mother's account is missing emails received before August. Furthermore, many of the emails display the following message when opened: "The message from SENDER<[email protected]> concerning “SUBJECT” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
I have done some research and this problem typically occurs when the mailbox is full or offline. Yet, the mailbox is not full and it is online. Some of these messages can be read on the server's website (comcast.net), but the server only keeps emails for 2 weeks, so any email received before that period is not there.
What did I do wrong? I followed the same procedure for both my father and my mother so I am confused. Unfortunately, my mother's account was already deleted from the old iMac (my father's still exists). Is there any way to try and get it back?
    Thanks!

Hi DeeCee48, and a warm welcome to the forums!

Slight possibilty, You might try Data Rescue II...

(Has a Free Demo to see if it could or not, but you'll need another drive to recover to, or pot the old iMac in FW Target Mode)...

  • HT4527 Help please!! problems with moving to new computer

    Hi,
I've been trying to transfer my i Tunes library to my new computer and have run into problems. I've followed the directions in the article on the apple website HT4527 using the external hard drive method of transfer, and although this has successfully moved all my music I seem to have lost all my playlists. Also my new computer doesn't recognise my iPod or i Phone anymore.
My old computer was running windows XP but I did have the latest version of i Tunes. My new computer is running Windows 7.
    Where did I go wrong?
    AAArgh

I suspect you only copied the media folder, instead of copying the main iTunes folder. Playlists, ratings, play counts etc. are all stored in the iTunes Library.itl file that is the core of your library. Migrate the whole library properly and everything ends up on the new system. This is my suggested process.
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.

  • Unable to open My Catalog after transfer to new computer

I use Elements 7 on computer running Windows XP. Has approximately 5000 photo's in My Catalog - all tagged and with captions.
Am in process of moving to new computer with Windows 7 - 64bit version. Have used original disc to load Elements 7 on new machine and Elements Organiser opens OK but with just a blank My catalog - and all tags are missing.
I used Windows Easy Transfer to move all files and settings to the new machine.
The catalog appears to have been transferred and Elements Help > System Information shows that it is located at undernoted - which it is, according to Windows Explorer.
    C:\ProgrammeData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\Catalogs\My Catalog
But I have been unable to find any way of getting Elements to connect to this file and open it as 'My Catalog' on the new machine. Would be catastrophic to find that I have to re tag and caption all these photo's. Probably impossible.
Have tried all the options under the File Dropdown menu relating to Catalog.
Have had differing opinions on whether Elements 7 can be used with Windows 7 64 bit - some say is OK, others say not. Though it does open as it did under XP - just does not detect the Catalog.
    Any ideas please?

Thanks. Might be making some progress. As I said before I had followed the path suggested by Help > System Information. Had also done amendment to Show Hidden Files, which the database seems to be.
But have now taken your advice and unticked the box relating to "Hide file extensions for known file types".
Using Windows Explorer on the old computer I now find that My Catalog folder includes a file named "catalog.pse7db"
File size is approx 19,500Kb - so this would appear to be the relevant file.
Have also now followed the Help>System information path on the new computer and the My Catalog folder also contains a file "catalog.pse7db". But file size is only 119Kb - so clearly not the version from the old machine.
Not sure if this might be relevant but have just noticed a slight difference in the locations indicated by Photoshop
    On old machine this is C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application data\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\Catalogs\My Catalog
On new machine this is C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\Catalogs\My catalog
Also just noticed that the bottom part of the dialogue box on new computer indicates "Operating System name = Vista Version 6.1"
Puzzling - as new machine definitely has Windows 7 installed and have never had Vista on either computer.

  • Ipod Classic No Longer Synchs after Itunes Moved to New Computer

I successfully restored my itunes from old computer to external hard drive to new computer.  Then I tried to sync iPod Classic 80 GB, but was told I couldn't synch it to new computer.  So I restored Ipod to factory settings and tried synching again.  It put on just a handful of songs I never heard of.  Meanwhile my 10,000 or so songs iin iTunes on my computer did not make it to my iPod.  How to get the itunes over to my now freshly restored iPod?

Please be patient, sync issues are time consuming, if you are lucky, just a Hard Rest and Restore will solved it.
    Ok Software Version 1.1.2.
So you can see all your 10,000 songs, in the new PC iTunes, and do you have any problem syncing the iPod using iTunes 10.5.3.3 on the old computer?
Can you do a Hard Reset  as below
After charging till full charge, at least 2 hours (preferably 4 hours)
Toggle the Hold switch, make sure you dont see the red mark when you do the  next step
Reset the iPod -> Press Menu and Center button simultaneously for about 10 secs till the Apple Logo comes ON
    Then release the buttons
    Select your preferred language.
Here is the Apple support Article on the 5Rs
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/classic/
On your iTunes please reset alert warnings, so that we can see the errors.

Then connect your iPod to the new PC and sync again.

  • Settings gone after changing to new computer and moving old profile

Well, I got a new computer. UI had daily backups and thus my profile is current as of last night. I tried importing the profile, and while the bookmarks, extensions, passwords, etc, are there, the theme wasn't saved, and it somehow opened tabs I had stored from like NOVEMBER. It also seems to have forgotten my tab settings, etc as well as added all the extra bookmarks that are default.
Any way to restore it to the old familiar state?

Also, it seems that the NoUn Buttons extension is missing the little 'recent history' tab next to them for some reason and the only solution is to use the Unified buttons, which I really dislike.

  • Moving to new computer after old one crashed

My problem is similar to this one (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2508342&tstart=45), but the old computer crashed and I don't have access to any of the old content or iTunes library. When I plugged the iPod in to the computer, I told iTunes to transfer my iTunes purchases from the iPod to the library and it looks like it did. But now it won't sync. I get the message "This iPod is synced to another iTunes library. Do you want to erase this iPod and sync with this iTunes library?"
I don't particularly want to erase because I have content on the iPod from non-iTunes sources, such as ripped CDs that I haven't re-ripped yet to the new computer. Do I have any choice? Did I do the right thing in the first place or should I start over somehow?

It's pretty old -- a 3rd Gen Nano. I just realized that I have a copy of what is probably most of the music on an external USB drive, probably along with the other files associated with the library, but I haven't had a chance to check yet. If not, then the only copy of everything is on the iPod.
But the problem is more getting it to sync, although if I find that I have all of the music, I could just let it erase the iPod and refresh it.

  • Video Missing After Reinstalling on New Computer

I backed up my "My Music" directory, deauthorized itunes from my old computer, reinstalled itunes on the new computer and restored the directory "My Music" and let itunes redo the music.
However, while the music is all there, the 10 or so episodes of Monk are not. Does anyone have an idea as to why?
Is video kept in a different location and perhaps I didnt back it up like i thought?
    Thanks.

I don't really understand ... you wouldn't re-install on a new computer ... you would install, not re-install ... so I'm not sure what your concern really is.
Nevertheless, any installation or re-installation can be done from the installation disk.

  • Missing playlists after transfer? Here's 1 solution

I was just helping a friend of mine with a common issue I've seen on the boards: the loss of playlists after a transfer from another computer. In this case, it was files moved from an old PC to a new iMac -- the music transferred, but the playlists were missing. Not wanting to start over from scratch, I found a quick solution for her:
    http://www.podtomac.com/
This is a free app that allows you to sync music and other content from an iPod/iPhone back onto your Mac -- including playlists. Luckily, my friend had all of her playlists represented on her iPod so this was fairly easy. The app has a setting (turned on by default in the prefs) to only "reference" files that are already on the iMac, meaning that it would not re-copy songs and therefore avoid duplicates. We plugged in the iPod, hit sync in the app and it transferred all of her playlists back into iTunes. Like buttah.
Notice I said "free"; if you wind up using this app to save the headache of reconstructing your whole iTunes playlist catalog, maybe throw the guys a few bucks, eh?
    HTH, JK

Found them! They were in the folder that wouldn't let me open it. To get permission I had to go to the folder and get info, then change the permissions.

  • PSE-8 Moving to New Computer But Keeping Photos on Ext. Drive

I'm a little stumped on what to do.  I'm changing to a new computer.  All of my photos are on an external drive.  I would like to keep them on that drive.  From everything I see, I have to do a full backup and move all of the photos to a new drive then do a restore.  I just want to move (load) the actual program, leave the photos on the original drive (which I backup daily) and still have all of my tags.  Is that possible?  How?  Thanks....

The backup/restore method is generaly the simplest (though not the fastest) way of moving your catalog and photos to a new computer:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshop-elements-faq.htm#_Move_your_photos_1
In your case, you could move your catalog folder to the external drive using File > Catalog > Move.  Then you could plug the drive into the new computer, start PSE, and do File > Catalog > Open and navigate to the catalog folder on the external drive.   If everything appears to open properly, then do File > Reconnect > All Missing to ensure that PSE is finding all your cataloged folders.

  • IWeb doesn't show JPEGs and PDFs after move to new computer.

I bought a new Mac mini (running OS X 10.8.2), moved all files from the old one, installed the most recent Domain.sites file from the old computer into the new computer's User/Library/Application Support/iWeb, but now iWeb opens with all embedded .jpg and .pdf files missing and a long list of "missing file" error messages appearing on startup. All of the .html, .png, .gif, .css and .js files appear to be working O.K. Everything in the "Sites" folder is unchanged since iWeb worked perfectly in the old computer. What can I do to fix this?

Version 1.1.2. I didn't realize until you asked and I checked, that iWeb has been discontinued and I must have transferred my version over from my old computer along with all the other applications. I see I can still buy an old CD version of iLife '09 from third-party vendors that includes iWeb '09, which is presumably version 3.0 and upgradable to 3.0.4 -- near as I can tell the last version before the program went out of production. Evidently iWeb 1.1.2 has compatibility issues with OS X Mountain Lion? I don't want to buy iWeb '09 (the other components of iLife '09 are useless, since 2012 versions were shipped with OS X 10.8) unless I can get some assurance it will work with my existing files. I have RapidWeaver 4.4.2 but I don't have time to recreate everything from scratch. It's frustrating that there's evidently no way to export all the work I've put into my iWeb website over the years into a form that can be edited using other web design software. Or is there? I bought RapidWeaver expecting to be able to open and edit my iWeb files. It's all HTML and JavaScript, isn't it? Why aren't all my files interchangeable between web design programs?
