"Missing Plug-in" instead of image in incoming mail

Recently, some mail has arrived with gray text reading "Missing Plug-in" where the image should be. The attachment size shows next to the paper clip, and I can use the Save button to save the image, and view it with Preview.
But when I try to cut and paste the saved image into an outgoing message, the same gray text appears instead.
Not all incoming mail behaves this way. I have not yet been able to determine if this is unique to a single sender.

Greetings All,
I've recently noticed the "Missing Plug-in" phenomenon too in Apple Mail (Version 3.6 (936)). I've tried resetting Java preferences by clicking the "Restore Defaults" button, but there's no change. Since I'm running Leopard 10.5.8 I didn't download the Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 2 at http://support.apple.com/downloads/. Is it okay to load this update if I'm running OS X 10.5.8? If so, I'll give it a try, but I don't want to attempt a fix if it's going to cause more problems.
I also went into Safari (Version 5.0.4 (5533.20.27)), into Preferences/Advanced and checked the Show Develop Menu in Menu Bar. I then went into Develop but found no Enable Extensions option. So that was a dead end.
I've checked my system for updates and everything seems to be up to date. However, I suspect that this just may be part of the problem. Sometimes things get fluky when updates occur. Strange how that is.
Any suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks!

Did not find any other suggestion online.
    What's happening?

    Hi
Is it not displaying any type of picture attachment (JPG, GIF, TIFF, PNG)? Is it any message that you view, from any sender?
How did you reset Java? You may want to clear the caches as well. Empty ~/Library/Caches & /Library/Caches/.

  • Mail Missing Plug-in after sending; quit and restart Mail fixes it

mail > Missing Plug-in after sending; quit and restart Mail fixes it.
Its very obnoxious after all these years to have Apple Mail continue to complain about Missing Plug-in
This happens for PDFs, .zips, .jpgs and other types.
Any ideas why Apple cannot seem to fix this?

    Back up all data.
Boot into Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the boot volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.

  • Why when resending emails on an iMac in Mail do I (and hundreds of others like me) get 'Missing plug-in' instead of the attachments being sent with the document?

It is high time that Apple solved the annoying issue regarding 'Missing Plug-ins' when resending emails with images embedded in them. It is infuriating to see so many users with similar problems and Apple NOT providing a 'fix' in some kind of software update! Why is it proving to be so difficult for this to be resolved by Apple, so that users do not have to rely on chat rooms for other users to try and fix the problem for themselves?

If you are wondering why you are not getting any responses, it is because you have vented a complaint without any details that make any sense or give anyone something to work on.
If you want help, I suggest actually detailing what has happened, with versions of software etc. Anything that would let us assist.
As a start I am guessing that you have not really got the hang of "How it all works". Firstly download the Pages09_UserGuide.pdf from under the Help menu. Read that and view the Video Tutorials in the same place. A good addition would be the iWork 09 Missing manual book and something to help you learn how to use your Mac.

  • Why do I get ?'s instead of images when e-mails are received?

Why do I get a question mark instead of an image when I receive e-mails?

When you receive email in HTML format (that is, as a web page), the message will usually contain links to images hosted on a remote server. When you display those images, the sender of the message will know that you've read his message, when you read it, who your ISP is, and approximately where you are. You may regard this as an invasion of your privacy. If the message is spam, then your address has been confirmed as valid and you've been confirmed as someone who opens spam messages. That will ensure you get even more spam.
If you're using the Mail application, you can prevent that information from being sent out. Select
    Mail ▹ Preferences ▹ Viewing
from the menu bar and uncheck the box marked
Display remote images in HTML messages
You'll still be able to display images when you want to by clicking the button marked
    Load Images
in the top right corner of the message window. If you do want the images to load automatically, check the box.

  • Missing Plug-In for all attachments in ML Mail

Mail.app (6.2) in Mountain Lion (10.8.2) is no longer displaying any attachments images.  It will display HTML emails fine, however.  The images also display fine in iOS, so it's not something wrong with the messages.
I noticed this issue this morning.  I'm not sure when it started, but it may be related to me having to do a full system restore a couple of days ago after Bootcamp Assistant trashed my hard drive.
I've been reading about the issue all morning, but most of the fixes involve older versions of OSX and are no longer applicable.  Here's what I have tried:
    Restarting (of course)
    Rebuilding the Mailboxes
    Resyncing Everything
    Installing Java
Removing all files in ~/Library/Preferences with java in the name
Java works fine in Safari.  All emails with attachments refuse to display in Mail.  Any ideas?

    Just as a quick update:
I created a new user account and tried, and it has the same problem.

  • Mail: photos won't display, only "missing plug-in" message

My wife's old G4 PowerMac running OS X10.5.8 recently stopped displaying photos in Mail.  Instead, all that displays is message "Missing Plug-in" and the photo number or caption.  This happens with all incoming e-mails, as well as outgoing e-mails generated from iPhoto, or just standard e-mails composed in Mail with an attached  photo.  The photo is there when she clicks on "Quick Look" but not in the field of the message.  HTML images in ads display fine...only individual photo attachments are missing.  Please help.  Thanks.

    Hi Neville.
I have the same problem with the "missing plug-in" message...but everytime I close out and try a second time the photos appear.
Is the path "applications" "utilities" "java"...if so I don't see "Java" in utilities, even though I was prompted to do a recent "java update" and did so?
Wondering where my "Java Preferences" file would be since I don't any file for "Java" in "utilities".
Any help/advice would be much appreciated!

  • Mail missing plug-ins

OK, strange one here.  I have several clients (Lion and Mountain Lion) that get the Missing Plug-ins in certain emails using Mail.app.  They are all using Exchange 2010 server, some setup w/ IMAP, others as Exchange server.  I know about the java trick and other things that 'correct' the Missing plugin thing... but this is something entirely different.  I spent a few hours on the phone w/ Rackspace technical support trying to figure out the issue.  As far as i know, all the missing attachments are images (jpg and png is what i've seen so far).  Sometimes these attachments show up on an iOS device, sometime not - just like OSX version.  If you look at the message details in OWA you can see the blocked attachments are replaced w/ https://email. ourcompany.com/owa/UrlBlockedError.aspx path, instead of the usual as shown by the other attachments.  It seems as though Microsoft (in their infinite wisdom) is blocking these attachments for some reason.    BUT... with Outlook 2010 on a Windows PC these attachments come through just fine.  Even Outlook 2011 for Mac is a little better in that it may show one or two other attachments, but Mail.app or Outlook.app neither show ALL of the attachments -- but a plain, vanilla, Outlook for Windows shows them all no problem.
Does anybody have anything to add to this?  The email ISP couldn't come up w/ any block list that can be changed, any other ideas, etc... I'm thinking I am going to have to call Microsoft which I really don't want to do.  It takes an hour to bring somebody up to speed as to where i am...
Let me know, TIA. -- PetieG

This seems to be a known issue affecting a few people. I don't know what causes it. For a possible fix, see this thread:

  • IChat won't accept file transfers? Missing Plug-in

My iChat recently stopped accepting automatic file tansfers. Instead of a file, a "Missing Plug-In" icon pops up.
    How do I fix this?

    Hi,
    Reinstall iChat
There is no realistic way of grabbing an individual component.
IF you are using Time Machine to do your backups and are certain when the app was working properly you could try Restoring it from the Backup.
The real issue as you will see reading the Reinstall info is that some of the iChat functions are held in support files and apps. Hence the suggestion to Reinstall.(Start with the App itself (Easy Way))

  • Missing Plug-In

I receive the Missing Plug-In message when I drag a PDF file from the desktop into the Mail icon in the dock; however when I create a new message first, then drag in the PDF file to the body of the message, it works fine.
I am also now receiving the Missing Plug-In message when I forward an email which contains a PDF file. The forwarded message does not contain the file, but only the Missing Plug-In words in the body of the message.
    What could be causing this?

    Alex,
I solved the problem, and this is what I did:
under quicktime preferences, click "advance" then "MIME settings" and make sure "images-still image files" is checked.
Why it was unchecked, I don't know, but under default setting it is not supposed to be checked and i've never messed with the settings before and no problems ever occured
So i have no clues why it happened the way it did.

  • Missing Plug-In and Getting Blue Squares with Question Mark

I am on a brand new pc, 64-bit Windows 7, all programs downloaded in the last week. I have used safari for years on my mac and want to keep using it on the pc but video and images are not displaying. For video content it says "missing plug-in" but doesn't tell me what plug-in I need. Some images do not display and I get the blue square with a question mark.
I downloaded a plug-in from apple but it seems to be for Firefox. I installed the 64-bit beta Flash player and it didn't help. The next site I tried to access told me I needed the Flash player so I tried downloading the regular Flash player even though I knew it wouldn't work. It didn't download and seems to have taken the beta with it, wherever it went (have searched computer). Things that don't display in safari work just fine when I switch to Chrome.
I have the latest version of Quicktime which came with iTunes. I messed with some of the default program settings, trying to get QuickTime to take over whenever possible but it doesn't seem to have made any difference.
On my mac I had used Flip4Mac to take care of similar issues. I didn't think I would have similar problems on the pc. Help anyone?

Blue box with a question mark means that images are not available now.
Servers storing those images may be down.
    Best.

Hello. I am having trouble with adobe reader but only certain files. When I first signed up for school in may Adobe Flash Player and Adobe Reader were required and when I did the check plug-ins system check, both were installed and running just fine. Just in the past 2 days is the check plug-ins test saying Adobe reader is not installed. I have tried un-installing and re-installing but still saying it is not installed. I'm not having troubl with all adobe reader files. I'm an online student and my e-books are opening and displaying just fine. Also my pdf documents saved on my computer are opening just fine. When I try to view a websites brochure, a websites sale paper, or maybe open up an article, the page pops up but the image won't display. It keeps saying "missing Plug-ins". I have a MAC 10.6.8. running on Safari and I have downloaded Adobe Reader 10.1.0. I need to be able to open up articles because I'm doing a homework assignment that requires one. If u can help in any way, please do.

I've tried all the fixes listed in the discussions about missing plug-ins in Mail.  None of them worked.  I can see attachements in the emails, but when I forward them, the missing plug-in shows up in place of the attachments on the forwarded email.  I'm running the latest OS 10.7 on my Mac Pro and I just downloaded the latest Java app.  HELP!!

  • Suddenly getting "Missing Plug-Ins" errors when opening .indd files in InDesign CS2

I have a PC running Windows 7 and InDesign CS2. The laptop's installation of Windows was corrupted and I had to re-install the OS. I backed up all files, reinstalled the OS, and then reinstalled applications. One of those applications was InDesign CS2. However, after the installation of CS2 on the fresh copy of Windows, I noticed that I have trouble opening most, but not all, of the InDesign files on my hard drive.
When I try to open a .indd file I see an error message pop up that says "Missing Plug-ins. LILO.APLN, DYNAMICDOCUMENTS.RPLN, CONDITIONALTEXT.RPLN" and three more. Under that list of missing plugins is the warning "This document uses one or more plug-ins which are not currently available on your system. Do you want to open anyway?"  If I click "okay" I then am met with another dialog box that says "Cannot open file. TEXT.RPLN, LAYER.RPLN" and on and on for about 60 more items.
I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE THINKING! I've searched around concerning this issue and it appears the consensus is that the file was opened by a newer version of InDesign. That possibility is, in fact, an impossibility. Never have I used a newer version of InDesign. The files that I am working on were backed up, stored on local storage and not touched once before reinstalling the OS and reinstalling InDesign CS2.
I also noticed that not all InDesign file formats were associated with InDesign in "Windows Programs and Defaults." I changed those to look to InDesign. I've also uninstalled InDesign CS2 and re-installed.
Not all InDesign CS2 files are exhibiting this behavior. So far, it appears more than half are, but some can be opened with no problems. There seems to be no correlation between which ones are able to be opened and which ones can't be opened.
What could have happened to these files and is there any possibility of opened them again? Any guidance is greatly appreciated.

Conditional Text was a new feature in CS4. I'm thinking, can you explain how your old CS2 documents became aware of it?
    Not exactly sure myself. Abiogenesis?
    [Edit]
Almost forgot. I wrote a script to unequivocally determine the InDesign version a document was last saved as:
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4071273
I'll give that a try today. Even an affirmative judgement that the files are newer than CS2 would not impress me however. The fact remains, the files were copied off one hard drive over to another, the plug was pulled on the hard drive, the PC was re-imaged, CS2 was reinstalled, the files were copied back over... and whammo.
