I just upgraded to 1.5 but now all of my Projects and Albums are missing. Any ideas out there? Help me end this nightmare! Thanks in advance!

Aperture Library says 149.24 GB. The All Projects was
the first place I tried but still no projects or
albums where they should be.
quit aperture ...
restart holding option and command ... answer yes to rebuilding the library ... go get a coffee/beer and wait till it finishes ...
rebuilding the library has been known to take of probs like this ... i was hoping it would just be the all projects selector ...

  • Missing Projects in Aperture 2.1.4 after database rebuild?

Had issues when editing a recent import in Aperture 2.1.4. I looked for help and followed this: I repaired permissions on my HD, then rebooted. I still had the same behaviors when working on the images so I tried the Aperture "Consistancy check". It said it was running a "Vacuum of Database" and then reopened Aperture. I decided to "rebuild the database" and finished my editing on that Project. Before I did the rebuild I did a Time Machine back up to an external HD. After I did the rebuild I did a Vault update. (My Library is Managed.) Later when searching for some photos that I had imported last year from my iPhone, I discovered that several iphone projects were missing. I searched the Library with Keywords, dates, etc and the files do not show up. I looked in deleted files from my last Vault. The only iphone files were ones that I had deleted back in Sept 2012. I did a spotlight search on my harddrive but could not locate files by names.  I am talking about hundreds of photos in these projects. I know that I did some keywording and some have Instagram tag.  Also, when I open Aperture it says that 466 Projects have not been backed up to the Vault and 19 files. (There has been one Project with those 19 files imported since the last Vault update.) In Aperture it says that I have 465 Projects and 27,578 images. The size of the Library is 180.28GB. The last Vault update is 154.7 GB. I think that the missing projects were imported at times from Sept 2012 through Dec. 2012.
How do I see if they are in a previous Time Machine backup and restore only those missing projects to Aperture? Is there a way to check the contents of my lst Vault back up? (I also do not want to lose my two recent imported and editted projects.)
I did just look at the contents (Show Package Contents) of my Aperture Library in the Finder and I can see the Library Folder in the my organization where they reside in Aperture and the icons with the named missing projects. I know that I should not mess with the package, but does this indicate that they are still on my harddrive?  I also see some Albums that I remember making in the Dec 2012 Folder. They no longer show up in Aperture. It seems that somehow I ended up with an earlier version of my Aperture Library after my troubleshooting. I would love to get back to the earlier version of the Library and then add in the last two projects and edits that I added in Feb 2013. Those two projects, including the one that I was working on when all this began are still there, but I am at the very least missing many hundreds of photos of my family and travels that did reside in those Projects. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (I need to upgrade to Aperture 3 asap, but need to solve this first.)

Anyone recovered from a similar issue?
Yes, I have inadvertently discovered I have the same problem with TIFFs I created by scanning in some very old photographs as TIFFs three years ago. I did extensive work on the old photos to restore their quality. Three years ago, everything seemed to work fine including printing the TIFFs. I just discovered Aperture 2.1.4 and Aperture 3 can't find the managed masters even though I verified they are in the libraries!
Like you I don't need to salvage the masters since I can drag them out of the library; I want to export the versions so I have my retouching work saved. At least I can see the final work in Aperture 2 but in Aperture 3, all is white or black previews with its managed masters not found.

  • "Library" Projects vs "Projects & Albums" Projects

    Hello all,
I have been using Aperture for about three years. I have Aperture 3 on three different Macs.
Prevously I have been using Windows XP and have been storing photos in directories on the hard drive the old fashioned way.
I have some questions about the storage structure of Aperture and I cannot find the answer in the Manual nor online.
    Here we go.
    1. When I import photo's into Aperture, it creates a "Project" both under "Library" Projects and under "Projects & Albums."
Q: If I delete a project under "Library" do the photo's contained in that project get deleted from Aperture's Library?
Q: If I delete a project under "Projects & Albums" do the photo's contained in that project get deleted from Aperture's Library?
    2. I have been a user of Mobile Me gallery since it came out, even before I bought Aperture.  I have synced the Mobile Me galleries with my copy of Aperture 3 on each of the mac's so I have redundant copies.  I understand that Aperture will automatically sync changed photos so I am pretty sure all the image files for each mobile me gallery now exists on my hard drives.
Q: As Mobile Me Gallery will not longer be supported in June, if I delete a Moble Me Gallery via Aperture, will the images in my Aperture Library still be there?
I know this question seems odd, but the manual is not really clear on this issue.
    3. While I am here asking the pro's this is a question I think I have figured out.
Q: The Vault list shows a Bar for each vault.  It has a caption that says something like
The Bar has hashes on the right side and solid color on the left. I assume this shows The total Drive side, and the total amount of free space availble at that moment, yet it does not show the size of the actual vault. And Green means plenty of room left, red means getting close to full.  Dum quesiton but I need varification.
Thank you very much for your patients with a relatively new Aperture User.
    Mike

    Hello Mike,
All images (and all versions of an image) are stored in one and only one project. All versions of the same image are always part of the same project.
The "Photos" view shows you all versions of all of your images for quick access and filtering and searching, but it does not store the images - it is not a container like the projects, it's more like a smart album.
Then that new "Project" would contain "Versions" of the orginal files in the "Photos" section??
If you drag an image by accessing it from the Photos View, you will not drag it from the Photos View but move it from its original project to a the new project - this does not create new versions in the new project. The Photos View is just a neat feature to select all your images in one place, independent of the project they are stored in, like having a file of index cards to all your images.
If so, then if I delete that new "Project" under "Projects and Albums" it should just delete the "Versions" in that project??? and not the originals under "Library?"
Oh yes, deleting any project will certainly delete your original images. The only originals you see under "library" are projects in the "Projects" view, and that are exactly the same projects as under "Projects and  Albums" - just different ways to access the same content.
What I was trying to find out is that if I delete a project, then that grouping created under that project would disappear but the original images would still be in the libary, just no longer assigned to that deleted project.
If you delete a project, from whatever view you use, the images stored in that project are gone. And since each image - and all its versions - belongs to only one project, that image will be removed from the library for good, if its project is deleted!
You really need to get a better understanding of the basic organizational structure of Aperture:
If you not have found it already, here is the User Manual, really worth reading:

  • Missing Project in Aperture 3

I've had a project go completely missing and I'm stumped as to what happened or how to find it. I did all my work on the project and organized it, with 3 others, under a folder. I created a slideshow and I selected some images and posted them to my Mobile Me Gallery. I've done nothing else to the project, but now the entire project is missing, and the images aren't showing anywhere on Aperture.
The Mobile Me gallery online still includes images from my missing project.
    help?

Hi Tony, thanks for the welcome.
I've searched and I still have only the one library. The library is about 120GB so it would be hard to create without noticing.
Luckily I did find the project on my backup, so I didn't lose it completely. It was an accident that I discovered that it was missing at all. The photos were taken less than a month ago, and my backup was from mid-September. So my issue is trying to figure out how it could have disappeared at all, because I certainly don't want it to happen again.
With the size of my library it is going to be difficult to maintain multiple iterations of my Aperture library. My plan was to maintain two backups - one at home and one at work on external hard drives. But if I have to plan for multiple versions going back into time I will. Maybe a Time Machine backup at work will be the answer. I have been using SuperDuper backup and my laptop is 4 years old and not all that powerful.

  • Sync project, album or smart album with MobileMe gallery?

Is there any way to sync a project, album or smart album with MobileMe gallery? It would be nice to have changes in one, reflect changes in the other. Thanks

make sure your inspector is visible on the left hand side press i to toggle on and off. You will see folders and projects that you have made in there. You can simply right click on a folder or project and select New from selection > MobileMe Album this will send all pictures in that album up to your mobileme Cloud for viewing. You can also select just some of the pictures in your main View screen again right click on them and the same as above. If you put more pictures into that folder etc on the mac you will see again in the inspector a icon and the text MobileMe gallery, to the right hand side of the text you will see a icon that looks like a wireless symbol just click on it to re-sync. You can also re-sync by going to prefs in aperture clicking on Mobileme and then click on the tab Check for new photos this works both ways.

  • Notes: Projects - Albums - Folders

Is there a notes taking or description feature that allows descriptive notes to be attached to individual Projects, Albums or Folders?
With a large number of Projects, and in working with multiple drives, I indicate data I want to retain by very briefly stated changes in the Project/Album/Folder name, but this is really a compromise as it doesn't allow much clarity of info.
A great feature would be the ability to open the space for a few lines of text on a filename in order to be a future reference for info like content details, where used, date of sales, where transferred, etc.
If not a feature of Aperture 3, there a means for linking elsewhere to capture notes? At worst, I could start a file for notes where the reference would be the Aperture filename, but a link inside Aperture or even to an outside file would be very convenient tool.
How do others record relevant data for future reference on Aperture Projects/Albums/Folders?

    Kirby, this is very helpful.
    Glad to help.
I was not previously aware of the Projects Info tab, so this is a great first step. I just upgraded to A3, may have been there in A2 but I didn't discover it.
According to the Apple "What's new" page, this is, indeed, new to Ap3. I never used a previous version.
As you suggested, I've created my own "status codes" so as to be standardized in checking off what I've done with individual projects.
Next recommendation (picked up from a helpful forum member): right-click in one of the text fields and select "Substitutions→Text Replacement". (I think you'll have to activate this with each launch of Aperture.) Then go to "System Preferences→Language & Text→Text" and add keyboard shortcuts for each of your status codes. This might seem cumbersome, but 1. it allows you to use longer status codes, and more importantly, 2. it ensures that there are no typos in your status codes.
What I've ended up with (still subject to change) is a long initial string coded as a series of "Not!Status" identifiers, where "Status" is each of the status parameters I track. This way it is easy to search either the Projects view or the Library tab for Projects which are not yet at a certain status. Then when the Project has reached a status, I simply double-click the "Not" and replace it with a space (which then lets me search for those Projects which have the selected status).
Project text searching is rudimentary. There are no operations allowed. The search is literal. Space characters are included.
I added a custom data field, "Comments" to the Metadata General section, it appears at the bottomof the fields group. I would like to rearrange this to be up near the top. A3 Help states that you can rearrange fields, but, I couldn't find any specifics on rearranging fields.
Easy. When you hover the mouse cursor over a field name on the Metadata tab of the Inspector, the name should show in reverse video. Click and drag the field name and put it where you want. (I smiled when I discovered this.)
For my Metadata Comments, I'm making up standardized tags for consistent status on certain actions, similar to the Projects Comments.
I use the built-in color labels to mark where along a standard progression of image development each Version is. The color labels are queer in that they are an "only one of" set of eight markers. Almost every other use of them I tried ended up failing because there were images I needed to mark with more than one color at the same time. I suggest using them for something image-specific and important to track -- tagging versions with colors is much more readily available than adding/changing status codes in a custom metadata field.
So this is very helpful for creating a track record of Projects process and Image processes for future reference. Thanks,
Let us know how you work this out.

  • Two Instances or Two Projects & Albums Trees?

I've just migrated 30K photos from iPhoto to Aperture. The number of projects is insane and I have a taxonomy in mind to clean it up; Aperture will make it simple to categorize my photos for visual scanning. What's a challenge, however, is the endless vertical scrolling and dragging multiple project selections up and down the Projects & Albums tree in order to move or consolidate projects into folders.
What I want is to either open two instances of Aperture (ok, I know I'm using a Mac and this shouldn't be necessary) or to open two Projects & Albums trees so I can drag and drop one or more projects from instance 1/tree 1 to instance 2/tree 2.
    Any ideas?

If Frank's good idea works, use it. I tried it that way and could not get it to work, but that might have been an update or two previous.
What I ended up doing was using a combination of
    - newly created top-level Folders as holding bins
    - labeling Projects with unique tags for searching (e.g: "{space}XXX")
    - judicious use of the Library search feature (search for " XXX"
    - using "Mark as Favorite" and then filtering to Favorites (then select and move, then select whole Library and "Remove from Favorites" to clear this grouping)
With a little bit of planning, these tools will let you organize your Library systematically and without too much senseless effort.
What I would love to see is an interaction between Projects View and the Library Inspector. One should be able to move Projects between Folders in the Projects view, and also by dragging to the Inspector.
Important: moving thousands of Projects is one of the most processor-intensive things you can dump on the database. Expect Aperture to take hours or even a day to finish updating all the information. +Do not force-quit Aperture+. Let it run, unmolested, until it finishes.
IME, the effort is well worth it. Good Luck.

  • Why did they change itunes. i do not like it. miss the album scroll

why did they change itunes. i do not like it. miss the album scroll and ablum cover in bootom corner.

I love the new version of Grid view but some of the other changes feel like they still need some fine tuning. And I miss cover flow even if I didn't use it that often...
You can restore much of the look & feel of the previous version with these shortcuts:
Ctrl+B to turn on the menu bar
Ctrl+S to turn on the sidebar (your device should be listed here as before)
Ctrl+/ to turn on the status bar
Click the magnifying glass top right and untick Search Entire Library to restore the old search behaviour
Use View > Hide <Media Kind> in the cloud or Edit > Preferences > Store and untick Show iTunes in the cloud purchases to hide the cloud items. The second method eliminates the cloud status column (and may let iTunes start up more quickly)
Should you still feel the need to roll back to iTunes 10.7 first download a copy of the 32 bit installer or 64 bit installer as appropriate, uninstall iTunes and suppporting software, i.e. Apple Application Support & Apple Mobile Device Support. Reboot. Restore the pre-upgrade version of your library database as per the diagram below, then install iTunes 10.7.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to scan the media folder and catch up with any changes made since the backup file was created.

  • Missing Projects in iMovie 09 after upgrading to Mavericks

    Using iMovie 09 (8.0.6)
Before Mavericks came out I moved (copied) my iMovie Projects and Events to an external hard drive (from within iMovie, not the OS).
Everything was where it should be and worked properly after I was done.
My first time back into iMovie since upgrading to Mavricks and now my projects are missing in iMovie. The projects are present on the external disk in the OS, but they don't show up under the external drive from within iMovie's Project Library window pane. The events are present on the external when viewed from either within iMovie or the OS.
I've found the solution to delete the UpdatedToiMovie10 file, but since I didn't upgrade iMovie, that's not an option for me.
    Anybody have any ideas?

I do suspect there must be some incompatibility between Mavericks and iMovie v. 8 because all was working in your previous operating system (was that ML, Lion  or Snow leopard?) and the OS upgrade should not have touched your Projects folder (it is still at the root level of your external drive isn't it?.
Did you get iMovie 10 when you upgraded to Mavericks?  (I suspect not because you would have needed to have iLife '11 and then you would have had iMovie 9).  I am wondering whether iMovie 10 would be able to see and update your missing projects.  Trouble is that would be a $15 (I think)  gamble which may not pay off.
(Actually iMovie 9.0.9 doesn't launch at all under Mavericks on both of my Macs for reasons I still don't understand - for most people it works OK) but I was able to update projects to iMovie 10 and have now moved on to FCP 10.1.

  • Please Help, Missing Project File and Discussion Advice Isn't Working.

    Here's the rundown:
I was working in iMovie HD 5 when the power got cut out on my external hard drive. When I try to reload my project I got the 'Missing Project File' error that has been discussed by many on this board.
    There are two known fixes.
    1) Open the package and go back to the '~' version of the project.
    2) Use the MovieTimeline.mov in the Cache to import it back into a new project.
    Solution #1 simply didn't work.
Solution #2 imports the full video as a single long clip but is significantly lower in quality than the original version.
In addition, the movie was shot in true widescreen and plays in quicktime in 16:9 mode, but when I import that .mov file into iMovie HD for some reason bars are added on the sides and top and bottom of the frame, and the bars are thicker on the sides so it stretches the picture and makes everything look taller.
Although I'd certainly much rather have my original project timeline back, I could still continue my work if I could figure out how to import the .mov so that it retains the quality and size that it had to begin with.
Does anyone have any idea how to import it without losing the quality and size or how to gain back an earlier project save?
Please help if you can, my grandfather's 83rd birthday gala celebration (2 days away!) depends on it!

I know you're in a rush, so I'll mention a couple other possibilities.
Solution #2 imports the full video as a single long
clip but is significantly lower in quality than the
    original version.
    • You shouldn't see any difference. The video imported from the Timeline Movie.mov is exactly the same as the original video. My guess is you're seeing some side effect of the widescreen issue. That, or your iMovie playback settings have changed.
In addition, the movie was shot in true widescreen
and plays in quicktime in 16:9 mode, but when I
import that .mov file into iMovie HD for some reason
bars are added on the sides and top and bottom of the
frame, and the bars are thicker on the sides so it
stretches the picture and makes everything look
    taller.
    • Make sure you're importing to a DV Widescreen project.
    • It might work to open the Timeline Movie.mov in QT Player Pro and export to a DV stream set to 16:9, then import that to the new project.
    • It's curious solution #1 didn't work. What happened when you tried that?

  • Project/Event update for 10.1.1. = missing projects

I just updated to 10.1.1. When I started FCPX I selected to allow automatic update. During the process it stated there was an error and to check my Libraries and Events were improted correctly. My Libraries all seem to have imported OK, but my Projects are missing. The files seem to still be under Movies/Finat Cut Projects, so I tried to do a manual import. When I selected to import manually, the Fina Cut Project folder under Movies is greyed out.
How do I get my projects back in to FCPX 10.1.1?

I had this same problem. Fiddling fixed it, so here's how I fiddled & fixed:
Saw in FCPX 10.1.1 the "Updated Projects" item in the Events list (or where I always saw events before. But no projects appeared in the Timeline. "Where da hail did dey go?" I said to myself. Blood pressure rose like 100 points. I read through every online entry I could find. Nothing. Rebooted, ran permissions repair; still nothing. ARRRGH.
In desperation, I double-clicked "Updated Projects" – because working the twisty triangle didn't do anything.
Suddenly, something begain to happen. There was a progress bar.  Does this mean actual progress??
It did! *Voila!* The missing projects appeared in a list. Clicking on the one I wanted opened it in the Project timeline. BOOM.  Fixed.
Hey, Apple! You might have TOLD us in some really PLAIN way that this was the way to open projects now. Just sayin'. I mean, the amount of hate-posts on forums the world over that have been generated around this one problem is incredible, and it could have been prevented with some simple "Here... do this instead" directions.
