Missing Proxy

I am currently importing on a new external drive movie clips from my Sony camera through Final Cut Pro X.  I filled a full 1Tb external drive last week with no problem. I changed external drive today and I get a yellow exclamation mark on the files being transferred and a message saying Missing Proxy. Did a setting get changed in FCP? What does it mean Missing Proxy? Thanks for your help.

Thank you Tom. Yes, the Proxy file box is always ticked when I import, but not the Optimized media box.  I always import the events on my external disc. At one point I changed the preferences in FCP X to Proxy Playback and what happened is that one of the five big events on the external drive (30G each) showed Missing Proxy (drive was connected) and I actually could not view the the clips of that event at all.  I thought I had lost that important event! Only two days later I remembered I had set the Proxy Playback option - I undid it and then I could view the files of that event (have not started to edit that event yet).  Why only one event disappeared and not the others on the same external drive is a mystery.  This is an event that was simply transfered along with 4 other events from one external drive to another (data management - the files are so big I have to reorganize my filing system). At the point of transfering this event from one ext. drive to another, no setting had been changed such as Proxy Playback as at the time I did not know that option. So I can't explain why in the Proxy Playback I can't see that event while I see the 4 other that were imported at the same time.
If I understand from reading several comments, I can simply import all my movie clips through FCP X (whether as optimized or proxy media for size) onto an external drive, but when I start editing (I do the project editing on the Mac drive), and only then, do I change the Playback to Proxy.  Is that correct? Or should the Proxy Playback always be on?
The original problem I had and still have and which triggered the searching for a solution to make the files smaller, is that I can't burn the several 2 1/2 hour projects on a dual layer dvd as I did in the past, very easily, with a PC and Adobe.  The events are videotaped with a Sony camera (.mts files), and are normally 9-12G in size. But after importing through FCP X as proxy media (not optimized), these event files get enlarged to 30G! Any setting I should change without losing access to my video clips?
Is the following a good option? I thought that, once my 30G project is done, I could use Compressor (not familiar with it, just bought it, had no training) to reduce the file before burning it. Would that work?  I started to reduce one project (can't remember to which format) but stopped after a full night of compressing - only 18% had been compressed after about 8 hours. Had a doubt about this approach, but if it is a good idea, to which format should I compress the file if I choose to make another attempt at compressing my 30G project and then try to burn it again on a dual layer dics?
Thanks a lot.

  • Final Cut Pro X Missing Proxy?

I am making a basketball highlight video. After I finished cutting everything else out just so there are clips of the specific basketball player whose video this is, I watched the clips. The clips are now jumpy. I get this message: "Video frames were dropped during playback. You may be able to get better performance by doing the following: Use proxy playback by changing the media setting to proxy in the Viewer Options pop-up menu."
But when I do select 'Proxy,' all my clips are gone and replaced by "Missing Proxy!"
How can I fix this? I don't want my videos to be jumpy!!!! Thanks

Sounds like you never generated Proxies.
Look in the Clip Inspector under Info:
You can generates Proxies there, or choose Transcode form the File Menu:
    -paul.

I have just updated to Firefox5.0 and now every time I attempt to go online it says failed to connected due to missing proxy. I have to go into settings, network and set to auto each time I go online, it does not save for the next session, needless to say how annoying that is.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling but no joy, any help would be appreciated.

  • Final Cut Pro 10.1 "MISSING PROXY"???

Whenever I import my video to Final Cut Pro 10.1 it immediately shows a red image and says "MISSING PROXY". I can't figure out what to do. HELP!

This means that you have "proxy media" selected in the viewer, but you are not creating proxy media for the clips you are importing.
Either create the proxy media (control-click on any  clips and Transcode Media...) or, probably better, change from proxy media to original/optimized media:

  • After updating Final Cut X with Libraries feature most of media has turned to red "missing proxy".

I opened Final Cut X this morning and it told me I could not work on my projects until I updated them to Libraries. I made the update and now most everything has the red "missing proxy" screen on it. I am very upset because I have been working on a big project for 2 weeks and cannot work until this is resolved. Where are my projects???? Why is everything in red??? Somebody PLEASE advise!!

This is a very common question and has been answered many times. Have you searched this forum with your query? Did you save your old projects/events or are they in the trash?

  • Missing Proxy shows after updating OS10.10.3 supplemental and Pro Video Formats 2.0.1

About 1 hour ago I quit FCPX with a project that was nearly finished.
Then I updated MacOS 10.10.3 supplement plus Pro Video Formats.
Then I opened the project again I was working on before.
Now all the clips, the multicam's, the project file show "Missing Proxy".
The relink command finds the looked for clip, but the clip does not show up. neither does it relink all the other clips.
    "Missing Proxy" all over.
How can I get this project back to working order?

    it was set to proxy
I have proxy files for my media
I changed to original/optimized: now about half the clips show up. source: Canon XF305
What about the rest? Source: Nikon D800, Nikon D7000 some are missing, Panasonic is  "Missing"
missing is also a Logic Pro File and a sound file from a audio recorder

  • How do I recover missing proxy photos?

I got a new computer and the geek squad transferred my old files to the new computer along with my Photoshop Elements 4.0, which I upgraded to Photoshop Elements 11.  The problems is that my proxy files are missing.  I should say that they are in the new pse11, but only the information shows up without a proxy photo.  I can see the filename, and tags but no photo.  How do I solve this?
Thank you to anyone who can answer.  I contacted the geek squad and they were of no help.  Roxann

Give these two fixes a try  to see if they can recover those missing photos.  But be sure to have a backup of your current library in case the results are not to your liking:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Changed date and time and lost reference to proxy files

I had a batch of transcoded proxy files (from a Canon 550d) that had the wrong time on them. I used "Modify > Adjust content created date and time" to shift them by an hour. FCP now reports "Missing Proxy" for all of them. I've checked in the events folder and all the proxy files are still there, it just seems FCP has lost its reference to them.
I can re-transcode them but of course that takes a long time. Two questions: anyone any idea why this happened and is there a way to re-link FCP with the existing files?
Curiously I adjusted the time on some files that had been transcoded from a AVCHD source and these are still OK!
(Using V 10.0.5 on a 2011 MBA with LaCie Thunderbolt disc)

In the end I re-transcoded the files but I think this article may have been the answer:

  • I'm stuck in proxy mode, how can I get out?

I seem to be be stuck in proxy mode. Even with a new library and a new clip, it shows a 'missing proxy' label. I can't switch to 'optimized/original media'. FCPX simply doesn't do it. I already tried trashing prefs and reinstalling FCPX. please help?

What exactly happens when you try to switch by selecting Original/Optimized as in Alchroma's image? Does it still show Proxy as selected?
You may also try Window->Revert to Original Layout.
If reinstalling, it is recommended that you use FCS Remover to make sure that all traces of the application are deleted. And then you'd need to download a fresh copy from the App Store, and also download the additional content from inside the application.
It stays on Proxy. That is the issue.
Revert to original layout didn't help.
I uninstalled using AppCleaner. I deleted all files (except the 1Gb of additional content)
(BTW thanks for Luis and Alchroma for trying to help)

  • Proxy settings for SOA Suite 10.1.3.1.0

    Hi,
after migrating my processes into the new SOA Suite 10.1.3.1.0, one of my processes won't run anymore. This is due to missing proxy configuration.
I followed this explanation[1] which worked for the process manager 10.1.2xx but not for the SOA Suite.
I really appreciate your help and any suggestions.
    thanks,
    Gregor
[1] how to config the proxy of Bpel process manager(with password)

You need to go to the AS Control pages (Enterprise Manager). Click on the container that runs SOA suite (typically "home" for simple install, or "OC4J_SOA" for advanced install).
On the OC4J page, click on the "Administration" tabsheet. Click on "Server Properties".
You should find the commandline options for OC4J.
You will need to set the following options:
    -Dhttp.useProxy=true
    -Dhttp.proxyHost=<your proxyserver>
    -Dhttp.proxyPort=<your proxyport>
-Dhttp.nonProxyHosts=<any servers like localhost you don't want to run via the proxy>

  • Why can't I use proxy media?

I've got media from 3 cameras - all are 720x480.  Two were imported from camcorrders, one was miniDV and one was JVC hard drive (SD).  When importing I did not have the option to create proxy media, and still do not have that option available (it is grayed out).  The third was imported from an avi file uncompressed; it created proxy media when importing.  I am trying to use them in a multi-cam clip.  If I use proxy media, the two clips from the cameras show the red/yellow "Missing proxy" screen but the avi file shows fine.  If I select "use original or optimized media" the clip from avi drops frames, either with "better performance" or "high quality" settings.  I know I've had it playing back OK before, but don't know what I have changed such that I can't get a good playback in the multicam multi-angle viewer.  It seems if the camera video is already coded so it doesn't need proxy media, it should use that format when proxy is selected (I'll make that suggestion on the feedback from).  Any help would be appreciated.

The problem is AVI is not a native format to FCPX while DV is. And FCP X will not make DV into Proxy for this reason. So if you want to mix AVI with DV you need to do it in 'original' mode. For better performance what you'd want to do is convert all of the AVI to a better format- like ProRes for example then import that as your new originals for mixing with the DV footage.

  • Transcoding Red footage to proxy in FCPX

I'm transcoding a ton of red footage into proxy on an external hard drive.  I left it on overnight and now maybe about 50 percent complete.  Question:  If I cancel the transcode process and disconnect the external hard drive, will FCPX remember what clips are left to be transcoded when I re-connect the external hard drive and begin the transcode to proxy again?  Or is it going to start all over?

Not sure it will "Remember" to transcode those NOT being transcoded. Afterall, that could be BAD... Becuase YOU chose to cancel. This is just my logic talking ;-) -- But imagine you would hit "Cancel" transcode and FCPx would keep commencing the transcoding ;-) I would not like that...
However, what I do know is that you can manually transcode the "Missing" proxies..
Here is how I do it...
Say I have transcoded half my arsenal of originals and I for some reason cancel.
    1) In preferences switch to proxy
FCPx will now display about half the files (ones that did not receive transcode) in red icons as missing proxy
    2) Select all the missing proxies and give them a temp. keyword of i.e. "Missing" (Reason for this is that when you switch back to High Quality Media - sometimes FPCx will loose the event library selection - and then it is diff. to see which files have missing proxies and which not)
    3) Switch to High Quality Media in preferences
    4) Click the Kerword "Missing" you just created
    5) Hit command + a and then transcode media
Above workflow is for a large event library... Say past 400 clips... Depending on "today's Mood-swing) of FCPx selecting 400 clips could take 10 minutes.
If your lib. is smaller you can just (when you re-connect) the drive and event lib.... select all files and then hit transcode media... FCPx will only transcode those clips that has not proxy...

  • Proxies Missing and Full scans not working

We had some major issues upgrading our Facilis shared storage to 'multi-user write' and in the process we lost all the proxy files/thumbnails for any video that was NOT stored in a archive device in FCSvr.
Now the Facilis is stabilized - but I am left will 20,000 plus video flies that I need to recreate proxies/thumnails for. Any of the video that was stored on archive devices in FCSvr still has all the proxy files/thumbnails intact.
So - I think I need to run a full scan on my edit-in-place device that has all the clips with missing proxy files? But this is not working. I keep getting:
    "ERROR: E_INVAL pm_transcoder ..."
I can add new media to FCSvr with no problem - proxies and thumbnails get generated. But I can not seem to figure out how to make a full scan work. It tries three files - they all immediately fail and the full scan stops.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

In the process of making the changes you made, did any paths change? If the device paths changed at all, you could have trouble if you don't change the device in FCSvr too.
Also, Did you bring FCSvr down before you started the upgrade? If FCSvr was running and tried to access the device while it was not mounted, specifically if it tried to write to either the shared storage device or the proxy device while it was unavailable to FCSvr, it may have created a "phantom device" in the /Volumes folder. I've had this problem several times. Try this - using Terminal on the FCSvr machine, cd to /Volumes. Does everything look normal there?

  • Mobile AnyConnect group policy proxy settings

For Android or iPhone anyconnect client is it possible to have the group policy proxy settings take effect?
When connecting via desktop client these settings set the OS proxy settings. However for mobile platforms proxy settings are usually set on a WIFI connection profile.

  • FCP X 10.1 Missing Files

I have a series of instructional videos I'm working on and they all appear as MISSING FILES when I open the Library associated with each project, everything was working fine on friday, THIS is very strange- When I try to Relink the missing files nothing happens, ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED -
It's recognising the relative file paths to the Original Media folder in the Library - but when I try to reconnect I CANT BECAUSE THE .fcpbundle Library file wont let me access the Original media folder- please help or Im switching to FCP 7 or Avid

Sorry about last post, the Files were appearing as MISSING PROXY (not MISSING FILES as stated) - which is still annoying - but it seems to me that FCP X doesn't like working with native H264, and hence has somehow rid itself of the link files in the library to the actual media (as I did not transcode on import)
As a workaround I have transcoded the H264 files using File>Transcode (Proxy) and this seems to be working
It would, however, be great to be able to edit the originals without transcoding... and not have to transcode at all.
In the meantime I will use the newly generated proxy's - export an xml > grade to original files in da vinci and round trip back to FCP X using ProResHQ and then export a MASTER file.
