Missing Registry Settings
When I open iTunes, I receive the message:
"Warning!
The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."
I have reinstalled iTunes three times now, and I still receive this warning. I can burn CDs through Windows Explorer (e.g., copying photographs to a disc), but I cannot use iTunes to make a backup disc of purchases. In addition, I tried to run a diagnostic: the iTunes diagnostic function did not recognize that I had put an audio CD in the drive yet I was subsequently able to play the CD in iTunes. How can I fix this problem?
I posted a message on a couple of these, but you really seem to know what you are talking about so I am going to ask you. I looked at the directions you gave some other people about the error they are getting about missing drivers. However, I don't have a Packard Bell--I actually built my computer but I don't know how to fix this lol. I followed these directions, which are little different than yours: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302976 Please let me know which would be best for me to follow if you don't mind looking at the link. The registry the GEARAspiWDM has reappered after I deleted it, and imported the old file. I prefer not to mess with my registry--the fact that it reappeared worries me a little. I did follow the directiosn given int he link to the T though so to speak. Anyway, if you could help I would so greatful! Thank you!

Itunes missing registry settings
Somebody please help! I've got a new ipod nano and installed itunes from the disk but got this message: "The registry settings used by the itunes drivers for importing and burning cds and dvds are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other cd burning software. Please reinstall itunes." I notice the CR-RW Drive (D:)which is called a removable storage device on My Computer is missing. Only showing HDD (C:).
I didn't have quicktime but downloaded it yesterday as I understand itunes requires it. The pre-installed CD playing / burning software I have are: RealOne Player; Sonic RecordNow; PowerCinema and Windows MediaPlayer.
Any ideas anyone? My laptop is a Packard Bell with XP Home edition and Norton internet security 2006.
MikeFOr some reason, this is being seen in pretty much only Packard Bell's which leads me to believe its a Packard Bell issue. Ok I am going to copy and paste what I wrote to someone else about the same issue so I dont have to retype it again.
For the most part, what's occurring is one of two things. Either...
A) an application (such as iTunes, etc.) is installing a driver file (as a .SYS) or replacing a working driver file that is referenced within your registry. For some folks, the replaced driver is still referenced by either an UpperFilterCheck or a LowerFilterCheck, and the device manager is actually seeking out that file that, well... no longer exists. Or, when you try and uninstall the application (iTunes is the frequent transgressor) everything is removed, including the related driver files, but the registry isn't altered... so the device manager continues to try and locate that driver file... which no longer exists.
or
B) a virus (or trojan) burrows its way into your file structure, and creates an element of itself disguised as a .SYS file. We've seen this happen before with viral elements disguising themselves as audio or video card driver files, in the efforts of masking themselves from lower-class anti-virus programs (or un-updated ones). In this case, they take on the name of a driver file that the optical drives are "familiar" with, and so, with the intention of being "fast, friendly, and efficient", the optical drives are tapped to utilize this new "driver" file... and it gets referenced in the registry as such.
However, when your anti-virus actually snaps to it, and removes the virus / trojan, and you go off on a virus-killing mission, galavanting through the registry and cleaning the little buggers out in Safe Mode and everything... you might remove the viral elements... but... the reference to them might still remain. The device manager is still looking for that "driver file", and will cause the optical drives to lock up in a Code 39 or Code 41 because of it.
Either way, he thing to do to reclaim your optical drives is located in your registry here:
HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE1 0318}
You'll want to have that open, and a mini-window of the following:
START -> CONTROL PANEL -> SYSTEM -> Hardware (tab) -> DEVICE MANAGER -> Offending Drive (with yellow tag by it) Right-Mouse-Click and PROPERTIES -> Driver (tab) -> DRIVER DETAILS
Notice that list. It references all the drivers that that particular drive is utilizing. There should be a single .DLL (dynamic link library) file and multiple .SYS files. It's the .SYS files we're focusing on, and they should be located in your C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\ folder stem. If you want to open a new window explorer, and go verify that each of those driver files still exists in that folder stem, you may.
At this point, compare the Driver File Detail list with the Registry Tree Location you're sitting in, and look at the UpperFilterCheck and LowerFilterCheck key values. Your offending key value will NOT be on your Driver File Detail list!!! It might be as small as "PFC" or something else, but that value is referencing to a driver file that no longer exists. Delete that offending key value. Close the registry.
Close the Driver File Details and Drive Properties windows. At this point, to finish this up, you need to Soft Uninstall (Right-mouse-click on the drive, and hit "Uninstall" ) the drive(s), let the Device Manager refresh... then hit ACTION -> Scan For Hardware Changes ...
This should start a new Found New Hardware cycle, and.... poof!... your drives should be back to normal.

Missing registry settings for importing and burning?
When I start iTunes, I keep getting the message saying that "registry settings are missing for importing and burning CDs and DVDs. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes."
I've reinstalled iTunes ten times (and I've done the "Repair" option through Microsoft Window's Control Panel). Nothing works. I keep getting this message.
(I have QuickTime and RealPlayer already installed on my computer, in addition to the Microsoft Windows cd burning tools.)
Can anyone please tell me what I need to do?I too have experienced the same problem. The fix to add an UpperFilters with "GEARAspiWDM" followed by a return only resolved the error message relating to the warning indicating that the iTunes drivers used for importing or burning CD's & DVD's are missing. While I can now import CDs to iTunes 8 still no luck in getting it to burn. I have installed the GEAR drivers and followed the steps in http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302976
but to no avail. I also tried the suggestion related to Vista that appears below but to no avail. Hope Apple has spent at much time trying to eliminate this problem as I have trying to fix it!
From GEAR works:
It appears that the AFS driver does not meet Windows Vista driver signing requirements and thus is not compatible with Vista. As a result, the AFS driver prevents the GEARAspiWDM.sys driver from functioning correctly resulting in CD/DVD drives ‘disappearing’ in Windows Explorer and applications using the GEARworks API, such as Apple iTunes and Norton Ghost.
Solution:
Disabling the AFS driver appears to resolve the issue.
This can be done by renaming the afs.sys driver file in the C:\Windows\System32\Drivers directory to afs.txt and rebooting the system. After the reboot the CD/DVD drives should re-appear in Windows Explorer and be available in GEAR and GEARworks powered product (such as Apple iTunes and Norton Ghost).
Note that disabling the AFS driver may result in the loss of the CD recording functionality in the above mentioned software that uses the AFS driver. -
I need help! I am not very tech savvy and I'm getting a message that registry settings for itunes cd burner etc are missing. I run windows 7 64 bit. Help please!!
I'd start with the following document, with one modification. At step 12 after typing GEARAspiWDM press the Enter/Return key once prior to clicking OK. (Pressing Return adds a carriage return in the field and is important.)

Missing registry settings...won't allow me to burn CD
Each time I open iTunes I get a warning message that reads, "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CD's are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes." When I click ok, it will take me to iTunes and I can play music as well as import. But I cannot burn CD's. It will give me a message saying that there is no Disc Recording Software found. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes, but I am still having the same problem. Can anyone help me?!
Go here -> Driver updates - GEAR Software and download install the latest CD/DVD driver updates.

When I attempt to log on to I tunes I get the following message:
"The registry settings used by the I Tunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing.
This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please re-install I Tunes."
To my knowledge no new software has been installed. I have tried un-installing and re-installing I Tunes but I still
get the same message.
Can anyone offer any suggestions? Do I need to download a new driver?
Bill MartinI can get down as far as step 11 but it shows nothing about upper filters and when I type on "If the Upper Filters entry is missing follow these instructions" nothing happens
Do you mean you can't see the instructions on what to do if there is no UpperFilters entry?
If so, here's the relevant instructions for that step:
On the right side of the Registry Editor window, right-click the UpperFilters entry and choose Modify from the shortcut menu.
Right-click the empty white space within the right-hand portion of the Registry Editor window. From the shortcut menu, choose New > Multi-String Value.
Name this new value "UpperFilters" (without the quotes). Then, right-click the newly created UpperFilters entry and choose Modify from the shortcut menu. -

Everytime I connect my iPod Touch (4th Gen) to my laptop, running Win 7 (64 bit) I get the message "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes" I have reinstalled iTunes several times and it has not fixed the issue. I am running ver 10.2.2.12 of iTunes. I HAVE NOT installed any other burning software to my laptop either. I haven't tried uninstalling iTunes and then re-installing it yet. Would that perhaps fix the problem? I've read that many users have had issues with the new version of the software and I was wondering if that might be causing my issue. I'd like to point out that iTunes seems to work after getting rid of the message, but I haven't tried to burn any CDs or put music from a CD to my laptop. Any ideas on how to get rid of the annoying message?
I also am having trouble hooking up with our other computers using Homegroup. I noticed quite a lot of people are having the same issue and hopefully they come up with a fix for that soon.
Thanks in advance.I'd start with the following document, with one modification. At step 12 after typing GEARAspiWDM press the Enter/Return key once prior to clicking OK. (Pressing Return adds a carriage return in the field and is important.)
iTunes for Windows: "Registry settings" warning when opening iTunes
If you're still getting the error message (especially when you plug in the Touch), I'd check for a device filter confusion on the PC. (They can affect the connection of USB devices to a PC, as well as burning and importing CDs.) For that one, see:

I have tried reinstalling numerous times but I keep getting the same message and I cannot use the burning feature. I have other burning software on my computer but it has always been there. This problem just started recently. Please help!
This same thing happened to me about two months. ago. I bought a new harddrive for my previously-fried netbook, and when I installed iTunes it gave me the missing registry business. So I came online and looked for solutions. This solution led to a different 'can't burn' error in iTunes, and I found a solution to that one, and it was like I was running in circles for a solid two weeks. Finally I managed to fix the problem, but after trying it hundreds of times I couldn't tell you which solution won out. Well, everything was fine and dandy, until I upgraded iTunes last night. Now its back to the same registry settings problem, and I want to maim something. Someone please help me ;___;
