!Missing songs: not missing

Hi,
I have a large music library on a time capsule and iTunes on a (new) IMac pointing to that library. I have all my songs and they all play but each unplayed song is marked as missing(!).
This also seems to make them unavailable through Front Row. As soon as I play a track through iTunes the ! is removed. Any ideas why this is and how I can remove all these missing indicators without having to play my entire library?
Many thanks.

Yeah, this is annoying. If I bought the song somewhere else I would understand, but Genius wants me to re-buy songs bought from iTunes. What gives?

  • Missing Files not Missing...

I have all my media on an external 4TB drive which is directly attached to my Mac Mini via USB 3.0 and which my MacBook accesses through Sharing on my home network. At the moment, both computers have WiFi turned off and are directly plugged into the router. Both the iTunes library on my Mac Mini and my MacBook are set to see this drive and all of its folders and files as the source for their media in the Advanced tab.
Previously, I had all my media on two external 2TB drives with this same set up, having used TuneSpan to allow both machines to find the files I put on the second drive. Previous to copying over everything from both drives to the new 4TB drive everything was fine with both machines seeing everything they were supposed to both before and after using TuneSpan.
I will note that the two machines are using different iTunes .itl library files, with the MacBook having less content in general but also a number of songs which are not included in the Mac Mini's .itl file.
On my Mac Mini which is running the most recent versions of Mt. Lion and iTunes, everything is good, all files are seen, no problem. On my MacBook which is running Leopard and iTunes 10.5.8, there are a number of movies which have exclamation points next to them. When I try to direct iTunes to locate the missing files, it sees the files just fine but the Open button is always greyed out so I cannot select the files; these same files are found and play fine on the Mac Mini and the file sizes are the same on both the old 2TB drive and the new 4TB drive. When I recopy the file from the old 2TB drive to replace the existing copy and then again direct iTunes on the MacBook to locate the file, it will now allow me to Open it even though it's the exact same file. When it asks me if I want to use this location to find the other missing files, it goes through some process and tells me this was not possible.
If I grab a bunch of the folders for the films that this is happening with at a time and recopy them over to the 4TB drive, the MacBook's iTunes continues to refuse to see the files. Only if I individually go through and recopy only the exact file it is refusing to use will it then agree to Open and Locate the file.
This is effecting about 65 movies which vary in size from 700MB to 3.5GB. They are films from every genre, some converted from VHS, others extracted from DVD, others re-encoded from .avi or .flv and some which originated as .mp4s.
The only other thing which seems worth noting is that the video files which the MacBook refuses to Open are depicted as music files with a music note on them despite them all either ending in .mp4 or .m4v and on the Mini they are shown as they actually are with the album art as the icon.
What is going on?! Why is it doing this?! How can I force the MacBook's iTunes to use the files it sees?!

I tried something almost like you suggested, John.
The problem was, as I perhaps didn't explain properly, that the files were in places and exactly where LR thought they were (and still listed as missing!). Because I can right-click and select "Show in explorer", and the file will be shown in the correct folder.
But you gave me an idea to the simple solution:
    Select All -> Delete Photo.
Instead of Delete I chose Remove, so that the files only would be removed from LR but not deleted from the disk.
Then I could synchronize the folder with the files. They showed up again and is no longer listed as missing.
Not that they ever really were missing, but still ...

  • "Missing" device not missing

For one of our clients the OnPlus agent is installed and has been working great for 6+ months. A week back one of the switches went "missing", on checking the dvice its pingable, appears in cdp tables and is physically there and up.
We tried removing it and re scannign for it, but it didnt appear. We finally had to manually add it just so it would appear
On some further checking, the portal and the agent seem to have a missmatch in information the Portal shows the agent is FW version 35.46 and the Box itself (connected via the portal) show the latest version (37.59), the box is ON100-K9 v02. We had a similar FW missmatch at one of our other sites, that has a V01, but put this down to a hardwasre issue, the FW rectified itself over christmas break, and i'm pretty sure while that was going on the box we are talking about was showing it had the 37.59 version.
Bearing in mind that everything was fine untill a week ago, and all the other devices are running fine, anyone have any ideas how we can get the switch back without having to kill the box and start again?

    Peter,
Can you send me a PM or email me at [email protected] with the agent and customer names.  There seems to be something odd going on with this site.  I'd like to investigate both the sistuation with the device sticking on an old version, and with this invisible switch.
FWIW, the next release of the firmware should rationalize this "37.59" version number, which is really and internal value and not readily translatable to the published releases.  The new version should look something like "7.7.2.123".  The "7.7" is the release revision, the "2" indicates this is production firmware for the device, and the "123" is the build number.  This value should match the device's login splash page.

  • Missing media not missing?

I opened a FCP7 project file and 6 of my clips were supposedly missing.  After attempting to reconnect the media nothing appeared to happen.  The sequence was still showing the red and white Missing Media thumbnails; and when I set the playhead over a "missing" clip the message also appeared in my Canvas.  However when I play the sequence all shots are there... nothing's missing.  I don't get it, and though everything seems OK (other than the unexplainable Missing Media messages) it concerns me because this is a large project I've been working on for months.  Does anyone know if this is some glitch or a sign of a larger problem.  I just had the project opened yesterday without an issue.  I made a few minor adjustments, saved and quit -- nothing that should have resulted in this situation.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.  Thanks!

    Thanks for the response, Michael.
The good news:  I ran Disk Utility and everything checked out fine with the HD.
The bad news:  I found my original clips and they're just black when I play them -- nothing there.  I have no idea what happened.  I'm assuming I'm seeing the render files when I watch them in my sequence.
Should I still run Disk Warrior as an extra precaution?

  • Missing font not missing

I created a newsletter on the Windows XP platform using InDesign CS4. The newsletter was fine, and I "packaged" it with all the fonts. I then upgraded to Windows 7 (64-bit).  Now, when I open the same newsletter, Adobe tells me Arial Black is missing. But it's right there in the Font folder, and when I try to reinstall it in Windows, just to see what happens, Windows says it's already there.
If this helps, when I select the font in the newsletter, it is listed in InDesign within brackets, like so: [Arial Black]. What gives? And how do I fix it?
    Thanks!

  • Song ratings missing, Song ratings missing

A coworker has an issue with his song ratings and times played statistics being reset. Any ideas?
He is using iTunes for windows.

The key to getting your ratings and other playlist-related data back is to have a back-up copy of the iTunes Library files.
If you do, put them into the iTunes folder and, assuming the songs are located in the same place as they were before, you should be all set.
If you don't have a back up copy of those files, your options are more limited. You will want to investigate 3rd party software such as PodPlus which says it can retrieve playlist data from your iPod (assuming you have an iPod with the music on it). Other options can be found here: http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/copying-music-from-ipod-to-co mputer/

i have missing songs that i purchased on my old iphone. they are not in my purchased folder. but in itunes store when i look the song up, it has the purchased logo next to it.... but no way to download it

If the songs are still on your ipod, make sure autosync is disabled in iTunes on your computer, connect and right click on it in the device list, then choose "transfer purchases" to copy all bought media and apps from your ipod to your computer.
If the songs are not on your computer and got deleted from your ipod as well, you can't get them back, unless you have a backup of your iTunes library as part of your computer backup.

  • I got a new computer, told it library was on external hd, no problem.  A lot of artwork was missing though (NOT manual artwork, only previous artwork I'd asked itunes to find). I ran 'get artwork' but it's only asigned artwork to the1st song in each album

So, I got a new computer.  As my itunes library has gone through a few in its time, it lives permanently on my external hard drive, as this generally makes moving to new computers hassle free.  I told my freshly intsalled itunes on my new computer where to find the library and it got all my songs, movies etc no problem.  However, some albums were missing artwork (NOT any of the albums I had ever manually added artwork to, thank god, these all seemed to be intact, jut ones where itunes had previously got artwork for me).  I asked itunes to get missing artwork, as is par for the course.  This it did, but it has only installed artwork for one song per album (generally the first song, or the lowest numbered track for incomplete albums, as far as I can tell).
It does not acknowledge these songs as missing artwork when I create a smart playlist but, erm, they are - the artwork doesn't show up on the display in the bottom LH corner or in the info tab.  WHY?  When I've added new albums 'get artwork' has always added artwork for EACH song on the album in every previous itunes I've ever had.  I don't get it at all.
I appreciate it might be irreperably messed up, but please don't reply with any manual adding solutions.  I have over 25,000 songs in my library and to go through and manually ask itunes to add artwork to each song (apart from the first on the album which already has it) would take SO LONG it makes me want to die inside.
I can't find anything else on this.  Other people have had issues with itunes match and devices, but these songs don't even have artwork on itunes, let alone on my ipod, iphone etc.

Well my first guess was wrong. The line that failed is the one that writes out the image to disk. I've not revisited the code for that script for ages, but it seems I did add in an extra test for missing files a little while later, then forgot to upload the change. I can reproduce the error message if I deliberately rename a file to confuse iTunes so that seems the most likely reason for your problem with the script. I've uploaded a new build of CreateFolderArt which should work better.
See FindTracks for a tool to repair broken links. You should probably get that issue fixed first.
I know what SPSS stands for but that is all I know about it.

  • 4 of the songs on a recently purchased album do not appear on my computer. I bought the album on my phone, and all of the songs are accounted for there, but on my computer it shows as an incomplete album and ITunes wants me to buy the missing songs?

I recently purchased Slipknot's ".5: The Gray Chapter" on my phone via an ITunes gift card worth $15 dollars. The album did have some trouble downloading because of a bad signal, and a good number of songs "could not be downloaded at this time". To download the missing songs, I had to go into ITunes store>more>purchased>music>all songs and click download on the few that didn't. This fixed that problem, and now the entire album is on my phone, but when the album transferred over to my computer, 4 of the songs still did not appear.  Not only that, it says that they have not been purchased. The ITunes card I used only has a dollor left on it, so I know it registered the purchase. The 10th, 14th, 15th, and 16th tracks still have $1.29 next to them, and ITunes is showing the album as an incomplete.

We are having this same issue.  We have over 200 songs that are now missing and only our most recent ones show up in our ITunes library.  Fortunately we have one phone that still has all of our music still in tact. This phone is no longer one I will be using as I upgraded to the Iphone 6, and only the most recent purchased songs remain.  The rest are no where to be found and the iTunes store shows that I would need to re-purchase.  Not sure what to do as when I tried to sync my last phone, all the songs were gone.

  • I update my IPhone4 to IOS6 from IOS4.3.3. My all songs are missing in the Iphone4. How to get those songs into my Iphone from ITunes. Even after sync also not coming to IPhone.

The iphone is not  storage/backup device.
The sync is one way - computer to iphone.
The only exception is itunes purchases.  File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
You should copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one.

  • ITunes thinks songs are missing when they are NOT...

I've written about this in the past and I thought I had fixed it manually. For some reason a large number of my songs (about 1300) in iTunes are not able to be found on the drive when I try to play them. Once I try to play them I get an error message saying "The song "song name" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it" and then the "!" symbol shows up next to the song. The songs files ARE there though.
In the past I thought I solved this problem because I "re-added" using all the songs in my library (about 4500) "File->Add To Library". If the song was one of these "missing" songs it was re-added to the library. The songs that were not "missing" were not re-added. (and again, the song files iTunes is re-adding are the exact song files it is saying aren't there in the first place) After the "re-add" I essentially had two of all the missing songs. One with the "!" and one without it. The newly added songs did not have any of the stats the original song had. So I used a script I was told about that goes through and syncs the song's statistics. Then after the song stats were synced I removed the "!" song from the library. I had to do this one song at a time. Of course, this took a VERY long time and I don't really want to go through it again... especially now that I know it may not be a permanent fix anyway!
However here is something new I noticed now that I have Leopard: The files that are showing up as missing are also the ones that don't have a "thumbnail" icon of the album cover in the finder. Also, if I go into coverflow view in the finder those files don't have the album as the other files do. However, there should be no differences between the files. For example, one album where each song was ripped at the same time in the same way will have some songs that have the cover icon and some that don't.
As I reported last time, this is not specific to one machine and has noting to do with the drive the songs are on. This also was happening on both 10.5.1. and 10.4.11 and lower.
So, why is this happening and how can it be fixed. I'm not going to re-import the songs because then I loose all my stats, ratings, etc and have to re-do the long method of fixin the stats.. There needs to be some way to permanently fix this problem. Is it with the song files or the library? Is there some sort of validation script that can be run?
Oh, on a side note... pre-leopard the "!" would show all the time. Now, if I close iTunes and re-open the "!" are gone until I try to play the song that should have the "!". This makes things even more challenging because I can't quit iTunes if I want to know which songs are "missing".
    Jeff

I have this same issue. I use an external HD connected to an Airport Extreme Base station to store my music. On Tiger 10.4.11 iTunes created a music database just fine and found every mp3. I just installed Leopard last night and left iTunes to create its database overnight. It found every song, but there are plenty with the exclamation just as you described. If I want to play these songs I must hit "Yes" to locate the song manually. I can then play any other song with an exclamation point in that particular album, but if I go to try to play another song with an exclamation point from another album I must repeat the process again.
It's definitely a problem with Leopard as I just got my mac back from the Apple store with a replaced hard drive. I created the iTunes database in Tiger on one day, then the next decided to purchase and install Leopard. So one day passed between each instance of building the database and it worked fine on a clean install of Tiger but not on a clean install of Leopard.

In particular, I uploaded 3 CDs at the same time, all are in my library, and all synced to the iPad - but the music from two of them are missing from the music folder. Questions are (a) where might they have gone? and (b) is there a way of "reverse loading" them back to my hard drive from the iPad? Thanks in advance!

    Hi dones49,
It sounds like your issue here is that iTunes can not find the files for some of the songs you have brought into it. This happens occasionally even if the songs have not been moved from the location that iTunes places them on import or purchase. When you try to use the song, iTunes prompts you to find the file, as you have seen.
To find the file, use the information in this article to navigate through the iTunes media folders -
Locate and organize your iTunes files
If you are still unable to locate the files, you may need to download them from the iTunes store again, or rip them from your CDs. See this article for assistance with downloading your past purchases -

  • Missing Songs on Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra - 40GB. Player empty but space not 1

I have the Nomad Jukebox Zen Xtra 40GB.
Over the last couple of weeks I?ve been slowly ripping my CDs, using Creative MediaSource and then adding them to my Nomad player. Recently, I went to turn on my player and notice it saying ?rebuilding library?. I thought nothing of it.<SPAN> I then went to see how many songs and albums were on the player and from what I could tell it looked like a lot less than what I thought I had copied over. The songs were something like 3750 and the number of albums was something like 350, which was far less than what I thought it should be but was not 00% for sure.<SPAN> Total free space was something like 7800MB.
Anyway, yesterday, I tried to copy over some new songs that I had just ripped from CDs.<SPAN> ? of the way through the battery died on the Zen player so it stopped transferring. I went to charge the player and when turned it on the player said ?rebuilding library?. There should, at this point, had been 4500+ songs.<SPAN> I went and tried to copy over the files again, from my computer, and noticed that the songs that I had just copied and would have been skipped, were being copied over again. When I went to check Settings, About the player said I had the ~3750 songs plus the additional songs that had just copied over. At this point I just copied over the new songs bringing my total count to 4634. To be safe, I copied all the songs from my Zen back to a new computer, using Creative MediaSource. After copying over all the files, I then tried a reset of the player, thinking this would delete all the files on the Zen. Instead it did the ?rebuilding library?.<SPAN> When I went back to Settings, About, on the Zen player, it again said there was the ~3750 songs and ~350 albums.<SPAN> So the ?rebuilding library? on my Zen player keeps on removing/hiding my songs and albums.
Since nothing was working, I connected my Zen to my computer again and using the Creative MediaSource deleted all the songs on my Zen player. When I was done it is showing No. of Tracks: 0.<SPAN> Total Memory:<SPAN> 3833MB.<SPAN> Free Memory though is only 8659MB.
There is nothing on my Zen player that I can see. Even using Windows Explorer and Nomad Explorer, it is completely blank.
Someone help please.<SPAN> How do I get back my missing songs and/or reset the player? If at all possible I?d like to get the missing songs off the player since I don?t have those ripped songs on my computer and don?t feel like ripping all those songs again.<SPAN> What is going on?
