Missing Sound in Video Game... QuickTime Can't open "AIFC" Files

Recently bought "Alida," whose sound files are in AIFC format. Understand this is a common Mac sound file format, but for some reason no sounds show up in the game, and if I open QuickTime player and double-click any of the ".aifc" sound files stored in the game folder, QT returns the error message "The movie could not be opened." Clicking "OK" sends me another message stating that QuickTime needs another component to play the movie. Clicking "OK" there sends me to this page:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html?os=OSX&ctype=73646563&c subtype=696d6134
Unfortunately, on that page are 11 different codecs, none of which address ".aifc" files. I've looked up the AIFC file format information on Google, and there is a lot, but no pointers to the correct codec for a Mac. Can anyone suggest what I need? My version of QuickTime is 7.6.4 (Pro).

Could the "invalid track" be something the game uses to call the file?
There are lots of tricks like that that Games use as a sort of protection, even skewing files so as to make only their application know how to read them... not sure on this of course.
Why would I convert a sound file to the same format?
One thing about "Standards"... there are as many interpretations of them as there are companies. There are likely more than one kind of .aifc files. I'm thinking the Game itself is only going be looking for "certain_file.aifc" so it would have to be at least named that, though converting it to .aiff or even .mp3 might work if the extension was renamed to .aifc.
To just play them outside the Game converting it to anything should work.
There's also a know bugabo with certain .aifc files...
With the development of the Mac OS X operating system, Apple created a new type of AIFF which is, in effect, an alternative little-endian byte order format.
Because the AIFF architecture has no provision for alternative byte order, Apple used the existing AIFF-C compression architecture, and created a "pseudo-compressed" codec called sowt (twos spelled backwards). The only difference between a standard AIFF file and an AIFF-C/sowt file is the byte order; there is no compression involved at all.[3]
Apple uses this new little-endian AIFF type as its standard on Mac OS X. >When a file is imported to or exported from iTunes in "AIFF" format, it is actually AIFF-C/sowt that is being used. When audio from an audio CD disc is imported by dragging to the Mac OS X Desktop, the resulting file is also an AIFF-C/sowt. In all cases, Apple refers to the files simply as "AIFF", and uses the ".aiff" extension.
For the vast majority of users this technical situation is completely unnoticeable and irrelevant. The sound quality of standard AIFF and AIFF-C/sowt are identical, and the data can be converted back and forth without loss. Users of older audio applications, however, may find that an AIFF-C/sowt file will not play, or will prompt the user to convert the format on opening, or will play as static.
All traditional AIFF and AIFF-C files continue to work normally on Mac OS X (including on the new Intel-based hardware), and many third-party audio applications as well as hardware continue to use the standard AIFF big-endian byte order.
Note: As of Mac OS X version 10.4.9, the system will sometimes incorrectly display the AIFC icon for files with the .aif extension, whether or not the actual file format is AIFF or AIFF-C. This can be verified by opening the files in a hex editor and checking the FORM chunk's form type. This can sometimes happen when exporting files from QuickTime, and frequently happens when sending and receiving files between Windows and Mac computers or extracting files from an archive.

i just made a movie in iMovie and exported in MP4 format, now it won't open, error message says quicktime can't open the file ***? Anyone?

I have the same problem. I'm using Mavericks OS and latest iMovie. Both downloaded last week. I save the movie into File (as directed) and  QuickTime
will not open. I'm then directed to a page of formats which are supposed to be supported on which is .mp4. Any tips?

I dont get sound for videos, games and music but ringtone still works. When i press volume buttons on side of phone i only get the picture of the nell and no little dots underneath. This is on my iphone 4s and ipad. It happened at the same time.

Recurring theme with the 4s losing alerts except for the phone ringing.  Most complaints seem to center on the 7.1 upgrade.  The fix is dodgy, putting in a charger, playing a you tube video then pulling out the charger and wiggling it until you get the sound back.  When you get the sound back, the volume buttons start to work again.  Alternate solutions involve cleaning the docking port with a toothbrush, running a pick over the electrodes etc.

  • I have Aperture3 and iPhoto.  When I try send video clips as attachments, I get a message saying Quicktime can't open the .avi - why?

I have Aperture3 and iPhoto.  When I try send video clips as attachments, I get a message saying Quicktime can't open the .avi - why?  Others couldn't open them so I sent them to myself and get the same message.  Doesn't seem to be a size issue as I've tried with really short clips (4 seconds).  As I recall, I didn't have this problem before buying Aperture last fall, when I only had iPhoto.  It appears that by default, an attachment to an email automatically comes from my iPhoto files and not Aperture - assume that is supposed to happen but not sure.  Thanks for any and all help!

When I try send video clips as attachments, I get a message saying Quicktime can't open the .avi - why?
How are you tryin to send the .AVI file? Are you sending the attachment directly from Mail or from Aperture or iPhoto?

  • My quicktime can't play avi file

HI everyone does someone know why my latest quicktime can't play avi file?

Let me tell you what are you doing wrong...
you just followed the wrong road try this one instead and you will love it.
*1st of all*: Dont pay attention to QuickTime, no matter what movie you want to view
just download and install VLC Media Player and your worries about formats, video codecs, audio codecs, multi zone dvd reproduction will be over in a sec!
just "open as" > VLC Media Player and you will see everything and if you have a subtitle file, just drag it into the movie

  • Quicktime Can't open files after 10.4.10 update

I thought I had escaped all problems after installing the 10.4.10 combo updater, repairing permissions, etc. But today while trying to watch the iPhone Guided Tour video I discovered that Quicktime can't open it, nor anything else for that matter. Can't open audio files of any type, nor any video format. I have the current version of Quicktime, and after reinstalling it and reinstalling the combo updater, the situation remains broken. Quicktime Player will launch, but only to an error message :"Error Opening Movie. The movie could not be opened."
Curiously I can watch the iPhone movie in iTunes. And all other audio formats supported by iTunes play as usual. Any suggestions?

    Hey Douglas,
Would you mind expounding on this .... there is more than one Library.
In the "main" (not the house user library) I did find a file in the Quick Time folder "Toast Video CD Support.qtx", and I removed it (that was the only file in there). Still getting the gray ? mark.
Trying everything suggested in this forum and then some ... no good.
did you try removing 3rd party codecs from the
/Library/Quicktime folder to see if one of them has a
    conflict with the update?

  • I can't open pages files from USB and iCloud due to : "The necessary file index.xml is missing".

I can't open pages files from USB and iCloud due to : "The necessary file index.xml is missing". Original file is written on iMac (2014) and saved to an USB stick and then transferred till macBook Pro (2009, Yosemite) for editing. Then I shared the files by iCloud but I am not able to open them on iMac again. Niether can I use the USB stick to transfer the edited files back. I'm running Pages '09 4,1 (923) on the macBook and Pges 5.5.2 (2120) on the iMac.
    Håkan

Pages 5.5.2 is extremely incompatible with even other Macs let alone the vast majority of PC and MsWord users out there, so not a good idea to leap into the fire with both eyes shut.
After having done that to the first Pages 5 files, Apple has repeatedly done it to even the most minor point updates. Apple can't even anticipate its own erratic changes let alone what everyone else needs doing.

  • I would like to be able to edit MP4s in CS5.  I can not open the file. What am I missing?

I would like to be able to edit MP4s in CS5.  I can not open the file. What am I missing?

According to the publisher For GoSystem Tax, the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer 8, 9, or 10 is required.  Which means it can't be accessed from an iPad.  This seems weird.  I would recommend you contact the publisher.

  • Can't open WMV files in Quicktime since Snow Lep upgrade.....

I Can't open WMV files in Quicktime since Snow Leopard upgrade
I get an error message saying 'Quicktime player must be installed to run this application'
This is happening on both of my macs
    Any help appreciated

I had this problem. Double clicking the WMV file produced the message you had. However, if I open by dragging the WMV file onto the QuickTime X icon in the dock it did indeed open.
I then looked at the WMV's Get Info window and found that it was set to open in WMV Player by default. Obviously I do not have WMV Player installed. The drop down menu on this setting did have QT Player as the other option. When I changed the option to QT Player as default the "Change All" button became active. Previously it had been greyed out. Things have been OK since, but I have not tried it on any new WMV files.

  • HT3775 how can i open the file MPEG-2 Video, AC3 on my mac, when its coming from a sony camcorder?

how can i open the file MPEG-2 Video, AC3 on my mac, when its coming from a sony camcorder?

I think those files are Samsung's proprietary format, so only the Samsung software can open and display them.  If they do not make their software for OS X, then you are stuck requiring windows.
I thought the DVR itself lets you save as standard avi as the backup file format?

  • I'm recording video on JVC HD camera.Every 13:54 it starts a new file.I have one file that won't play.I get this message:Quick time player can't open (names file) because the movie's file format isn't recognized.  Only happens this one file.Ideas?

I can't open one Quick Time movie file.  It says: Quick time player can't open (names file) because the movie's file format isn't recognized.  Only happens on this one file.  All the others of a two hour shoot are fine.
Any ideas what's happened and is there some way to open that file and retrieve what's on it?

Thanks this was useful. I have been ripping my audiobooks and I was finding that they would get uploaded to iCloud in the process, which in itself was fine, but then iTunes would not let me change the media type to Audiobook, which is annoying as it effects how iTunes treats the media. Like showing you the skip back 10 seconds button.
The general outline here helped me work around the issue and change the media type before the media was re-uploaded to iCloud.

  • Can't open avi-files

    Hi out there.
    I have a big problem:
My new MacBook Pro with Tiger has goten sick. QuickTime refuses to open avi-files.
    – I can't open them in either web, the player or other programs (fx Final Cut Pro)
    – I have installed a xvid codec some weeks ago (one of the recommended by Apple)
    – I have installed Flip4Mac
    What can I do?
    Kind regards
    Esben, Copenhagen

Get rid of Xvid and any other codecs you have manually installed ( like 3ivX or DivX) and download and install the free Perian plugin from Perian.org.
Leave Flip4mac alone as it is for WMV files.
Note there is no such thing as a "normal" AVI file because AVI, just like Quicktime is a container for a video that can have one of many codecs and the codec is what you need to play the content. Perian provides a swiss army knife of codecs in one component - however it does not play well with the hodgepodge of new codecs people have added so they need to go.

  • Can't open CR2 files in photoshop and camera raw

This weekend I rented a Canon 5D Mark iii. I have downloaded the files and all of the thumbnails in camera raw say CR2 and when I try to open Photoshop does not recognize this product.
    I have:
    Photoshop CS4
    Camera Raw CS4
    Canon 5D Mark ii
I have checked my updates folder and all my updates are current. Do I need to upgrade to CS5 or is there a way around this?

Hi I recently had a problem opening CR2 files in PHotoshop cs4. I had to reinstall into a new computer, so obviously it installed the basic programme and not the updates.
After trying everything, even calling the help desk, there was apparently nothing that can be donw as they no longer support cs4.
I kept trying and found a you tube video, which i cant find again to add the link but i followed the link and with what I did earlier I can now open CR2 files in my photoshop cs4
I found the relevany update that I needed to install and downloaded it, camera raw 5.2 ( Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Windows : Camera Raw 5.2 update )  this is the one for the Canon 5d Mk2
After downloading it would not update the progeramme so I was in the same possition, but i noticed the files were there and i just needed to put them in the right place in photoshop so carried on looking for were to put the Plus In.
This led me to the video.
    To the point.
Download the update and save to a location where you will remember.
open Adobe photoshop and go to "edit"
    Them " Preferences "
    then "General "
    Then " Plus-Ins"
At the top you will see " Add Plug-Ins Folder " Check this box then navigate to the "win64" ( this is because mine is a windows 64 bit computer and the download is specific ) and Choose it.
Shut down photo shop and try to open a raw.
Bridge doesnt work for some reason but im going to keep looking.
Hope this works for you as well.

  • OneNote recordings "We're sorry, we can't open the file because it is in use by another program."

Constantly, OneNote breaks and screws up my recordings that are synced with my lectures. It is such a fragile process and very frustrating. As soon as I'm done recording, I press stop. When I test the recording, it says, "We're sorry, we can't open
the file because it is in use by another program." I just recorded and then stopped it. If i close and reopen OneNote, it says, "oneNote is cleaning up from the last time it was open." And the recording still says it's in use by another program.
I've even restarted the laptop and it still won't open. The only way i could salvage the file is if I copy and paste it into another folder, and then it will open through windows media player, but all the live syncing with my notes are gone. Where are these
files stored? If I could save the sound and find the file/format that holds the syncing data again, I could work around this. They are no where to be found on my computer. Other forums give locations, but my folders are empty. Some other recordings work and
sync nicely, but I have still lost many recordings to this error. However, if I play a file and then close it without stopping playback, that file, too, will now be unusable. It will be stuck as "We're sorry, we can't open..." no matter what i do
and again i have to copy/paste it into a new folder and then move it back. I had the same problem on my last laptop. I record in Windows Media Audio 10 Professional at 192 kbs, 48 kHz, and stereo CBR. I need the high quality because the lecturer is too quiet.
It seems to happen when I record long lectures, 45 min+. Shorter recordings tend to work fine.
Please help, this would make note taking so much easier.

    A bit of a confusion on my part;
Now we have created these REPORTS using Basic Crystal Report 10.5, which comes bundled with Visual Studio 2008 and .Net Framework 3.0. Now on our machines, we have never experienced any issues.
Going by the above, you should have references to CR assemblies of version 10.5.3700 only. No other references.
    Now, looking at this paragraph:
BUT on the DEV server (web server) which has .net Framework 3.0 and in its GAC its has CRYSTAL DLLs version 11.5 (required to create an Object of ReportClass and its related functions) ; sometimes we get the following error while exporting crystal report to pdf:
I wonder what runtime was deployed to the server. E.g.; if you are using CR 10.5, your assemblies will be 10.5.3700 and you should be deploying the following runtime (depending on 32 bit / 64 bit, etc.):
    CRRedist2008_ia64.msi
    https://smpdl.sap-ag.de/~sapidp/012002523100006255262008E/CRRedist2008_ia64.zip

One way to check on what is actually loading is to use the [Modules|https://smpdl.sap-ag.de/~sapidp/012002523100006252802008E/modules.zip] utility.

  • Some users can't open Excel files. It is trying to open it in Internet Explorer "An error has occurred. Please try again."

I have some users in my company that can't open Excel files from any document libraries on SharePoint 2010. The receive the error message "An error occurred. Please try again."  We don't currently use the Excel calculations services. When
a user opens an excel file they are prompted to either Read Only or Edit.
This affects less than 5 people in a large company.  They have the Full Control permissions and have been able to open the files previously.  There has been no changes made to the server either.  I can't find anything that points to this in the
    event viewer.
It doesn't matter if which computer that they try to open this up from either.   All computers are Windows 7 Professional with IE 9 and Office 2010 x64.
I can't find anything that points specifically to this exact error. None of the excel files contain pivot tables.    This one has me stumped.

I would make sure no one has open on machine / locked on machine (Would assume you checked this, but wanted to add)
Also would have assumed you restarted the machines (:))
Make sure the file security did not change (check to ensure no one changed the sercuity of the excel)
Make sure the version of excel is the same (Changing from 2010 back to 2007 affects the file, etc.. on convert) that no one converted and saved thus causing error in file.
Can they open other excel files?
It sounds like the excel file it self has changed if you cannot see issue in SharePoint logs.
If it is all SharePoint excel files - try deleting one persons access and readding them to see if that helps.
    SharePoint has issues ;)
