Missing source clip in project

I am trying to back up a LOT of projects to an external hard drive.  When I checked to make sure they made the move several show "missing source clip" sections.  Errgh!

I did that too, then I did a migration assistant to a new Mac and ALL of my movies have Source Clip Missing now, even though the original clips are still in the iPhoto Videos.  I can stand to re edit one or two projects, but not ALL.

  • Multiple instances of the same source clip in Project bin

    This is a strange one.
I think its more an issue now than ever due to tapeless format editing. I edit lots of video now shot on Canon 5d. They sometimes have thousands of individual clips.
The problem is that our project files are getting huge and premiere slows to a grinding halt.
We copy paste lots of timelines from one project to another. When we paste, all of the source clips land in the project bin (as you would expect) However, sometimes I have already made reference to the same source files in the edit to begin with (So they are already in the project bin)
However, when I paste a new timeline, it will make another reference to that same source clip in the project bin. Therefore double up reference to a souce clip in the project. Increasing the clips in the overall project, which bloats everything and slows premiere down.
Can premiere be smarter? Can it see that the source file already exists in the project and link to that existing file instead of creating another reference to the same file?
    Hope that makes sence.

I am beginning to think that there is no easy way around this issue.
I have started to use Final Cut and am noticing lots of differences between the two platforms. I have been a Adobe Premiere user for 10 years and I concider myself a NINJA using this program. However, there are definitly differences between the two, this being one of them.
Final cut does not double up on source references in your project bin when copying one sequence from one project into another.
    CLEVER
Its annoying that premiere doubles files up as it gets ridiculously messy in your project bin. Double ups, triple ups, quadruple ups the list goes on.
Its strange cause when you start a Prem project from scratch and import a source clip, you can set in and out points as many times as possible and drag onto the timeline, and it does not duplicate the original source file in the project bin. Thus keeping your project bin neat and clean. However, as soon as you paste a sequence, it goes and duplicates refeneces like its outta control, rather than looking at what you alraedy have in your project bin and saying to itself. (Hmmm well the source clip is already here, so we dont have to duplicate this one....move onto the next file)
Prem is great at lots of things, dont get me wrong. I freaking love the program, however, things like this let it down as the program becomes unusable as it gets bogged down with way too many clip references.
Hmmm, we shall see who wins the day in the end. Time do do some Final Cut edditing now.
P.S. Final cut can do 16 multi clips in a real time edit. Premiere...only 4...come on Prem, pick up your game!

  • External hard drive failed -- no source clips -- but project file okay

It's 3.8gb so there has to be something there. How do I restore it?
I have an mp4 file I can go to in a pinch, but it's pretty highly compressed so I'd rather use the project file.
    Thanks!
    /john

The Project file is a text file that contains the paths to the Event files with in and out points and references to instructions for color correction, effects, etc. There is no source video in the project itself.
If you shared to the Media Browser, you may be able to find copies of your edited project.
Right click on the Project File and select Show Package Contents. Look in the Movies folder and there are your finished movies.

  • HT1026 Moved iMovie files to an external HD- Now have a project full of 'Source clip cant be found' yellow triangles.

I have foolishly moved my files to an external HD without following this advice. Now I'm left with a project full of 'Source clip cant be found' yellow triangles. Am I seriously going to have to start again or can I move them back somehow? They are from a variety of events and having tried moving some of them back into the imovie events folders using finder, I'm having no luck. Any help?!?

The other thread I found is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1908460&tstart=15
I had some initial success after moving my projects and events on to the ext drive. iMovie reconnected the missing source clips and all of my projects played fine, with music and video intact. Hooray!
However I opened iMovie last night only to discover the source clips missing again. The music and photo stills are fine, it's just the iPhoto video. When I pass the cursor over the ! it tells me it is looking for the files on my HD even though they no longer exist there as I chose the MOVE option, not the COPY.
    Agh!
I also tried the consolidate media option which tells me not all of the clips and events are on my ext drive (funny that they were yesterday) but when I click the option to move them, nothing happens.
Do you still have a copy of the events on your ext drive? Can you try copying them over again?

  • Moving and copying events and projects to an external hard drive using Imovie09-Source clip is missing

Some background on what I am doing is importing all of my home video into an event in IMovie. Since DVD's can only hold about 2 hours of footage, I am making a new project for each 2 hours so I can burn the footage onto a DVD. I want to make space on my internal hard drive so I am trying to move the projects that are completed to an external drive. Because I also don't want to lose any footage I have imported into the event I am also copying the home video event to the external drive. (didn't want to move it yet until I know what i am doing, just in case it is lost somehow).
I tried moving a project to the external drive (it was a slideshow for my daughters first birthday which contained photos and video clips from the event that was already copied to the external drive). The project did move to the external hard drive but on the video clips there is a yellow triangle that says source clip is missing. I am moving and copying from within Imovie and NOT the finder so I don't understand why it says the clip is missing when it is definitely a part of the event that is already on the external drive.
What is interesting is the source clip is missing error showed on the first birthday project but it did NOT show as an error when I moved the 2 hour home video project. (All of the video in these projects are coming from the same home video event)
I am trying to make sure that when I move the projects permanently off the internal hard drive and onto the external drive, that I am not losing any part of my projects. I want to be able to easily move them back and forth if needed without any missing files.
Any suggestions as to why I am still receiving the yellow triangle?

As I can't see what you are doing, I can't tell you what you might be doing wrong.
You could try trashing the preferences.
Many weird things happen as a result of corrupt preferences which can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP X stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that only  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.
There is absolutely no danger in trashing preferences and you can do it as often as you like.
The preferences are kept separately from FCP X and if there aren't any when FCP X opens it automatically creates new ones  .  .  .  instantly.

  • Accidentally split 2 events, now "source clip missing" in my project, HELP!

Ok, so I've been working for weeks on a project, and I accidentally split an event into 2 events. Dumb I know, but I was trying to split a single clip. Anyway, it split the event and made 2 new events. I tried to "undo" but for some reason it didn't work. Now alot of the clips say "source clip missing". I looked in the trash and found my missing original event folder, but it's empty cos all the videos are still in the event, but under the 2 new events. I tried to put the folder back into imovie, I re-merged the 2 split events and renamed it the original name (after someone on a forum suggested this) and nothing works. I am freaking out! It is crazy cos all the video is still there (at least I think it is). Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!!!

Thank You Sameer. It worked. Now I can close this issue.
    Regards,

  • I am having trouble with Imovie I finished my project but when i try to play it it says "source clip is missing" Help!

it says "source clip is missing" Help!

    Hi
Did You move or alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - if so - You must not do that - try to put all back
Did You in iMove trash any Event's - then don't - try to get them back by looking in trash-basket on DESKTOP. Move them out and back into iMovie Event's.
This problem might be due to the idea that there is a copy/movie in the Project - it's not !
You are using a NON-Destructive Video Editing program (all behaves in this way) and that means that PROJECT's are only a small text document pointing to What material You want to use, Where it is located e.g. in iMovie Event's - and how it's meant to be played.
If You move or delete any of the raw material - the Project will point to an empty space = Can Not be played.
WILDLY GUESSING - PLEASE no Offence ! (I've been here and done this - so I guess in this way)
    Yours Bengt W

  • In Imovie I get the message that my source clip is missing so I can't work/view the project

    Geoff.

  • All of a sudden, I can't watch any of my films from the Event Library, it also says 'Source Clip is missing' in the other window, I haven't even touched anything that I know of?

All of a sudden, I can't watch any of my films from the Event Library, it also says 'Source Clip is missing' in the other window, I haven't even touched anything that I know of?

    Hi
I haven't even touched anything that I know of?
And You've not moved or emptied any folder on Your Hard Disk named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
Or - disconnected any external hard disk/s
As one CAN NOT move the Event's or Project's on / via DeskTop/Finder - AS iMovie then loses the connection to them. Moving them - MUST BE DONE - within iMovie application - to work OK.
So if You by meaning or accident moved it/them - Move them back - and iMovie might work again.
ELSE - If You are 100% sure that You didn't move them then
    • Trash iMovie Pref and Cache files
    • Run Repair Permissions - Disk Util tool
    • Run Repair Hard Disk - Disk Util tool - BUT YOU MUST Start-Up Your Mac from DVD or External HD to do this
and may be all will work OK again

  • Source Clips Missing After Moving Them

I found a few threads about this but I didn't find a solution that worked for me so I thought I ask again.
I just bought a new HD with Firewire 800. I moved all my events to it using iMovie '09 by holding the command key and "moving" them. Now my 20+ projects are all missing their source clips.
How can I help iMovie to find where the clips have been moved to?
    Thanks in advance.

Are you sure you are doing the Command-Drag from within iMovie?
You should see a small icon for your external drive in the Event Library List. Drag your Event from its place in the Event Library List for the internal drive to this icon while holding the command key.
You can also find detailed instructions for this in iMovie Help.

  • Help! "Source clip is missing..." iMovie 11 for Mac and, alas, urgent.

How do I find out the file name of the original clip(s) so I can reconnect them (somehow?) to iMovie? I have no idea whether I moved them. It may be that I am not saving iMovie 11 files the way you need to, e.g., I just moved all the freakin' folders off my internal hard drive and onto an external. All my other Projects are working fine. It's only the one I actually need that says "Source clip is missing."
I could go find it in Time Machine if I knew what I was looking for... or Spotlight... or do some kind of grep in Terminal at the Unix level.
Not that it's relevant to this question, but I'm running Snow Leopard on an iMac with 2.66 gig Intel Core Duo processor and 4 gigs of RAM.

i've read that one is supposed to hover over the yellow exclamation point icon to see the expected file/source clip that iMovie '11 is looking for. well, i hover and it just shows a date, no file name.
when i try to export a movie with missing clips, i get a dialogue box saying something like, "Some source clips are missing. In the exported movie, those will appear as black frames."  it lists the missing file name. i found a folder with that name, full of numbered clips, but putting it in iMovie Events didn't do a darned thing. how do i figure out *what* iMovie is looking for in terms of source clips, and *where* it wants those files/folders to be?

  • Clips from Project bin to source monitor causing video output to go out of sync(CS6 and CC)

Any footage I double-click or drag from the Project window to the Source monitor causes my video output to go out of sync. When I put the clips in the timeline, video goes back in sync and I'm able to view video output.  My monitors are connected to a Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle Thunderbolt(9.7.5) via component and HDMI. Is this normal behavior in Premiere or is there a setting to enable this? No issues doing this in FCP7(clips from Project window to Canvas).
Can someone with an I/O from AJA, Matrox, or Blackmagic please test this out for me. Thanks...

    Hi Joe,
How do you have your audio setup? Try the following.
    - Set your OS system sound to Built-in or Line out audio
    - Select Blackmagic for both Video and Audio in Preferences> Playback
    - Select System Default Input/Output from Preferences> Audio Hardware
    Hope this helps,

  • Source clips missing?

so i was going to upload a video to youtube the day after i had deleted a bunch of old files. some of these files contained clips i was using for my video. i turned on my computer and went to upload the video. instead of the upper right hand box of Imovie showing my video it said "SOURCE CLIPS MISSING" in white letters.
Please help me i will be extremely disappointed if all that work was for nothing

You need the source clips if you want to render the movie again.
If you have Shared a copy of the movie somewhere, you could upload that copy to YouTube. Did you share to iTunes, or to the Media Browser, or Export to QuickTime before destroying your video?

  • Imovies error message missing source file

I dragged event file in imovies into a project file. Now I cannot open them an error comes up 'source clip is missing'. The videos are there but will not play. Everything is deleted from my trash. How do I fix this

Thanks to LoveFX4's search here: [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/801219 https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/801219], we have an answer:
    # In the address bar, type "about:config", without the quotes
    # Press the enter key
    # In the filter window, type "Keyword.url", without the quotes
    # Double click on the "Value" field, and type in "http://www.google.com/search?q=", without the quotes
    Done!

  • Missing source video

After importing the video, editing the footage, and then quitting the program, when re-opening iMovie it shows me the edited version created previously, but displays a "missing source video" note in the playback screen.
If I re-import the original video all is well, but that is not always possible.
What gives? Am I overlooking the obvious? Am I mental?

Your Project file (it is actually an RCPROJECT file) is a text file that provides links to the video in the events, in and out points for each clip in your project, audio, titles, transitions, etc.
You can open the RCPROJECT file in a text editor and try to see where the project thinks the Events should be. BBEDIT works well, but TEXTEDIT will also work.
Be sure to make a backup of your project before trying this. YOu can use control-click "Open With" and select the text editor of your choice.
