Missing Sync or Pocket Mac

I currently have a Motorola v3i but I am returning it as I do not like the phone's address book/calendar functionality. I am considering replacing it with the XDA Mini S, which, as it is a Windows Mobile 2005 device, will not work correctly with iSync.
Therefore, I will be looking at The Missing Sync or Pocket Mac (hoping they are updated to work with WM2005 as per their web sites).
I have used Pocket Mac before to synchronise an iPaq with AB/iCal and quite like the way it integrates with iSync.
I have never used The Missing Sync but quite like it's features.
Have any other contributors to this forum used both of these products? Which would you recommend?

I can only speak of PocketMac Pro, (I’m posting a missing sync message today myself), and can say that it is certainly a love/hate relationship. If you have very basic tasks like syncing to only one program, it can work pretty well, but it falls flat many times. Their support, while prompt (within 24h), typically returns canned messages that, in my experience, never answer my problems and I have to deal with them for several more days. They make a lot of claims as to what their software can do, but definitely believe the ymmv rule on this one. They also seem to lag behind in developing with Apple’s progress on the OS. For example, I had things working pretty well before Tiger, but the syncing services just wreaks havoc on PocketMac Pro.

  • BB Curve, Pocket Mac, Mac Book Pro sync issues, all of a sudden

Hi, new to the forum here, but not to Blackberry or Mac! I've been using this sync combo since it's inception back when I first got a 7100, then with my T-Mobile Curve when it came out, with little or no problems. I now, all of a sudden, have issues! I did look around at some other posts to see if I could find a solution, or someone with the same problem, but I think my prob is slightly different, so forgive me if I'm repeating some things here that others already have talked about!
After dropping my Curve over in Europe last month and cracking the screen (ugh), I got a replacement from the insurance company, which turned out to be a remanufactured phone (for the $130 deductible??? - another topic!).......  there were apps missing, and the phones'  keypad did not feel right, but IT DID sync ok... at any rate, I got them to send me a NEW phone, which I just received. It has the same exact software version as the other phones I had.
I did my usual USB sync with Pocket Mac, starting just with the contacts (mac address book) and notes (stickies). I selected 'overwrite device' in the advanced prefs of pocket mac (all latest versions installed, with latest drivers as well).  Worked fine, as usual.
I then added some addresses in my address book on the mac, and went to do another sync. It was at this point that the sync did not work, either in 'overwrite device' or 'two way sync'. The added addresses were not on my phone.
What I've tried, and noticed so far:
On the phone, during the 2nd sync, no matter which pref I choose, the ARROW on the connection status window on the phone is going the WRONG WAY, towards the computer icon, not the phone icon. Since I added info only on the computer, the arrow should be going toward the phone, especially when in 'overwrite device' pref. This was NOT the case on the original sync, when the phones' address book was empty; the arrow was going the right way, towards the phone. I did the 'wipe/reset' that Brodie suggested in another post, which is going to the address book on the phone->menu->options->scroll to 'default' and type in 'rset'... that wiped the address book from the phone.
I then did another sync, pref in 'overwrite device' and again it worked fine, with all my addresses, including the recent entries, transferred as they should be to my Curve...
I again made a few changes as a test, adding one address on the phone, and one in the address book on the mac, did a 'two way' sync, and again, nothing, both new entries were NOT copied.
The other thing I noticed, is the connections status window goes away after a bit of time on the phone (like it's finished), but the pocket mac software on the Mac is still spinning, acting like it's still syncing, with the status bar near the end, but it never finishes. I have to quit it manually. This did not happen on the 'clean' sync, everything finished like it was supposed to.
This obviously is a drag to not be able to sync without wiping the phones' address book, especially when data has been entered on the phone, and in fact, in that case, there is NO WAY to get it to the computer at this point!
I'm running MAC OS 10.4.11. Brand new sync cable that came in the box with the new phone.
As I said, all software and drivers having to do with pocket mac and blackberry are the latest versions just installed.
Maybe the desktop mngr for mac will solve all this, but, until then?
Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Missing sync, pocket PC, and sync conflicts--just doesn't work

Anyone with experience using missing sync with pocket PC would be greatly appreciated. I simply can't get this to work right. I constantly get the same "sync conflicts" I resolve them only to have them pop right back up--even before I try to sync again. This also immediately crashes iCal. So now I'm pretty much unable to use iCal. It's getting to be a crisis. Sometimes I can do a hard reset on my handheld and things will run smoothly for about 2 or 3 syncs then it gets all screwy again. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

  • Email syncing on a Mac

    Hey All,
I just switched from an iPhone to a Blackberry.  I am sure this is just a simple set up thing, but I have not been able to figure out how to get my phones email to sync with my MacBook Pro desktop?  For example,  when I read and responded to an email on my iPhone,  when I opened mail on my laptop, the accounts would sync so I was not spending time reading emails twice.  The other issue is that I do not have a record of sent emails that are sent from the phone.  What was also nice on the iPhone was the feature enabling me to keep calendars and contacts synced at all times as well.  Is any of this possible on the blackberry?  I am wondering if I can do it when I sync via pocket mac or missing sync at the end of each day, however I have not gotten either of them to work either.  I would think that Blackberry has the email syncing thing figured out at least.  My email accounts are all set up as imap.....its also annoying that everytime I send an email from my phone,  I get a copy of it on my desktop as new mail?  Someone tell me this all does get better!
Thanx in advance for any help you can toss my way

Vector, Greetings, and welcome to the BlackBerry.com Support Forums.
If your BlackBerry is on a personal BIS account setup, you won't have your mail and messages reconciled. Sorry.
Calendar and Contacts--yes, via the USB cable and Desktop Manager, or on a Mac, with PocketMac or Missing Sync.
Blackberry actually does have the mail reconciation figured out (way before the iPhone, lol), but you have to pay for that service. Called BES, enterprise service.
    Good luck.

  • Pocket Mac vs. Missing Sync

Does anyone know which is better between Pocket Mac and the Missing Sync? I need a program to sync my Dell Axim X3 with my PowerBook G4.
    Thanks for your help.

The first releases of PocketMac were buggy but using the current version I have had no problems (except that calendar items do not delete from my Windows Smartphone when they are deleted from the Mac). PocketMac no longer has an iSync conduit but does have a menu bar item. It also mounts the PocketPC 'drives' on the Mac desktop.
I have also tried MissingSync but at the time it was too expensive for me to just sync one device with. But is was very good software.

  • I got it. Syncing Blackberry Storm using Mac with Missing Sync

I just bought my Storm Sat and have been trying to sync for days. I have a IBOOK G4 running the latest TIGER OS. I read all you guys post and I think it all helped a lot. Im a new BB user so it took me awhile to figure the phone. Ok, so anyway to the good stuff. As mentioned I followed some of the other threads, installing Pocket Mac and the updated driver. Uninstalling and re-installing. Taking the battery out and all that. None of that worked for me either like some of you. Keep getting the error message. So, I broke down and bought Missing Sync. Still wouldn't work. So, tonight I uninstalled PocketMac and deleted all files associated with off my Mac. Then I brought Missing Sync up on my Mac. On your Storm go to Options then Memory. Click on Mass Storage Mode Support select On. Then when you see Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode I selected Prompt or you could do Yes. Save Changes. Then go to Missing Sync just set what your preferences are for sync and click Sync. Boom- you are good to go.
This is what I did. It sync my Itunes and IPhoto and everything else. So, now Im at piece. Hope this will help someone. To everyone else thanks for your ideas cause it did help me with my dilemma, so I guess I will keep the Storm.

i managed to get both music and pictures onto my storm from my macbook, and from my storm to my macbook.
i had to go into options on the storm, then memory, then to "prompt" for auto enable mass storage mode when connected.
then i disconnected and re-connected the usb with pocketmac open on my macbook and it started synching. at first it synched everything BUT my music and photos. then i noticed when i plugged the usb back into my storm once more, two seperate blackberry harddrives appeared on my desktop, Blackberry1 and Blackberry2. I went into Blackberry1, then to the folder "home", then to the folder "user", then to the folders "music" and "photos" and just clicked and dragged music from my itunes library and photo library into those folders. then I tested it to make sure it worked. sounds great on the storm! it has to be done into the folders on Blackberry1 though, i tried it with Blackberry2 and even though it has the same folder names, when i tried to play the music i had dragged and dropped said it was an incompatible format. it's not the format, it's just the wrong drive.
hope this helps someone out, it worked for me!

  • Missing Sync vs. PocketMac For Synchronizing Data between Blackberry and MAC

I'm looking for software to synchronize contacts, events, appointments, notes, tasks, etc., between my Blackberry Curve (8330 Series) and my iMac (MAC OS X 10.5.5).  I've investigated Missing Sync and it certainly would work.  Today I was advised that PocketMac will accomplish the same thing.  So, I'm looking for a recommendation on the advantages/disadvantages of either or both packages.

  • Syncing Treo 680 with Mac PIMs (using Missing Sync)

Thanks to Michael Lafferty's excellent advice, I was ready to start syncing my Treo 680 with Mac's PIMs using Missing Sync. However, after extensive research and asking questions on five different forums, I'm getting conflicting advice. H
    Here's my Treo PIMs situation:
    Calendar 802K (6378 events/12 categories)
    Contacts 1285K (2306/13)
    Memos 184K (52/14)
    Tasks 79K (250/10)
Here are the issues that I have received conflicting answers about:
    1. I have 9 custom fields on my Treo with a lot of information in them. These are critical fields to me. It took me many days to pull this info out of my Contacts notes and enter in these 9 custom fields for 2306 contacts. Is it true that I cannot sync these 9 customs fields with Mac's Address Book? I've been told many times that this won't happen. If it can be done, will changes that I make in data entries for these fields in the Mac Address Book sync properly and be reflected on my Treo.
    2. Can the conduits be set to "handheld overwrites Mac"? I've been told that it cannot. This and #1 are deal killers for me.
    3. I have seven phone fields on my Treo. They are in this exact order:
    work (1701 entries)
    home (209)
    Fax (291)
    email (201)
    mobile (201)
    pager (31)
    main (145)
Will I be able to successfully sync these with Mac's Address Book? If not, is there any reason that I couldn't take whatever fields won't sync and move them to some of the Treo 9 custom fields? The last question is moot if custom fields are not supported.
    4. I average about 12 categories for each of my 4 PIMs. Do these all sync over correctly to the Mac PIMs?
    5. I also have Treo notes attached to many, if not most, of my Contacts, Calendar events and Tasks. Will these all sync properly with the Mac PIMs such that I can make changes on either side of the equation and have them reflected after syncing on the other side?
    6. Are there any other limitations in my ability to faithfully be able to recreate my 4 Treo 680 PIMs accurately and completely in the Mac PIMs?
I realize that any reference to non-Address Book PIMs is off-target. I hope you'll excuse me dumping the other three PIMs into the mix. My primary concern is Treo Contacts/Mac Address Book.
    MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   Treo 680 (DateBk6)

Q: I have 9 custom fields on my Treo with a lot of information in them…
A: The Missing Sync does not synchronize custom Address Book fields between a Palm device and your Address Book application, but will not remove those fields from the Palm if the conduits are set to synchronize. If your conduit is set to the nonstandard Overwrite handheld with desktop data, the custom fields will be overwritten. I point this out because it is, at times, necessary to make a choice like this, and as a result: its bye-bye custom field data!
The Missing Sync cannot perform custom field synchronization because the Sync Services framework does not allow The Missing Sync to create new fields in Address Book to match your Palm custom fields.
Q: Can… conduits be set to handheld overwrites [desktop]?
A: No, because again, the framework does not support this specific type of bidirectional data transfer.
Q: I have seven phone fields on my Treo…
A: This is an issue primarily with the manner in which a Palm device handles such information. Though they are displayed in a particular manner on your device, they are not necessarily stored in a specific order by the Palm contact application, and can only be retrieved when labeled with an expected or 'accepted' field label. This issue gets complicated quickly, but in short…
    • only the first seven phone numbers sent to your device by the framework are written to the device
    • the order is not something that can be controlled by a developer, and it is not necessarily the order displayed in either the Address Book contact record on your Palm device
    • the Palm contact application does not distinguish between phone number and electronic mail address, though Mark/Space parses the data to look for the @ character—and, finding it—handles it as an electronic mail address
    • only one of the several IM addresses you maintain in an Address Book contact record is transfered, and only one URL is transfered
    • Palm categories are mapped to equivalent Address Book groups
As to synchronizing additional data to Palm custom fields, that's not supported. The place to put such data is in the Note: or Notes: field.
    Q: I average about 12 categories…
A: As I suggested above, category and group equivalents are recognized and synchronized. Be sure that you name the ones you intend to synchronize identically in both environments.
    Q: I also have Treo notes attached…
A: Again, these should synchronize bidirectionally, without issue.
Q: Are there any other limitations in my ability to faithfully be able to recreate…
A: Oh, yeah: because the data field labels and contents do not map 1:1, it is nearly impossible to create identical records in both environments. Look for the common abilities…
    • a maximum of seven telephone numbers and electronic mail addresses
    • a single IM identifier
    • a single URL
…and work within those bounds. You can generally store and synchronize any additional identifiers in a Note: or Notes: record, but this is clearly less flexible and potentially more problematic than storing them in matching fields.
You briefly mentioned the other PIMs on your Palm device, and their OS X rough equivalents. Those controlled by Mark/Space OS X bundled applications will not be an issue: memos, for example. Their are Palm OS quirks which result in inequalities. The most obvious of these is the iCal multiple day event which spans two or more days in iCal, but which is represented on a Palm as only a single day event, displayed on the first day alone.

  • Mac Blackberry Sync - PocketMac vs. Missing Sync

I am running a new Imac with 10.5.5 on it.  Had pocketmac running on my G5 fine but after loading it on the new Imac it would crash right after starting.  Tried many things and could not get it to work including the newest pocketmac upgrade fix.  Decided to download and purchase Missing Sync which is working perfectly.  Syncs everything and worked well,  My only questions - is there an application downloader for the mac?  I have a couple of games that I want to install on my BB that need anapplication downloader and I cannot seem to do this.  Any help appreciated.

I recently updated my iPad and when I went back to read a book that I had purchased I'm getting error messages and whole chapters are missing.  I tried re-syncing with my mac book and nothing changed.  Any help to restore my book completely?

Try a system reset.  It's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until the screen blacks out or you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If that doesn't work, you'll need to do a time-consuming "Restore."

  • Mac 1 dotMac Mac 2 Treo 650 (via Missing Sync) Mac 1

Is anybody syncing Address Book & iCal successfully between:
Mac 1 dotMac Mac 2 Treo 650 (via Missing Sync) Mac 1
I need reliable syncing in all directions for a number of users.
    Thanks,
    b.
    PS. Apologies for x-posting

I am going to assume for a moment that you actually mean…
Mac 1 .Mac Mac 2 and
Mac 1 Treo 650 via the Missing Sync for Palm OS
If you meant instead that your Treo serves as a means of synchronizing data on both Macintosh machines, you are headed for a data disaster. A Palm device should not be used as an intermediate 'storage' device to synchronize a pair of Macintosh computers.
The weakest link is .Mac, frankly, for a number of reasons, including availability and reliability. You might want to consider using MySync instead, which was just acquired from MildMannered Industries by Mark/Space. More information about that application is available here:
    http://www.mildmanneredindustries.com/mysync
Bonus: future compatibility is virtually guaranteed between The Missing Sync for Palm OS and MySync by this acquisition.
I do precisely what I outlined above—using .Mac Sync, but with a USB-attached Treo 600—with no issues whatsoever.

  • Installing Palm Desktop & Missing Sync to Mac-Questions

Here are the steps from the Mark/Space webpage for install Palm Desktop (PD) and Missing Sync (MS) to my new Mac (I just converted from PC 4 days ago):
"Note: In order for the Missing Sync to work properly with Palm Desktop, Palm Desktop must be installed PRIOR to installing Missing Sync for Palm OS.
    1) Install Palm Desktop 4.2.X
To download Palm Desktop 4.2.X, please go to: http://www.palm.com/us/support/macintosh/mac_desktop.html
    2) Install Missing Sync for Palm OS Version 5.1.X or higher
    3) If you have previously synchronized with Palm Desktop, your user name will be automatically added to the list of handhelds.
    4) Configure the Palm Desktop conduits and make certain that other PIM conduits, such as Mark/Space Conduits for Contacts, Events and Tasks are not enabled."
I have about 40 3rd party apps on my Treo, few of which have a desktop component (conduit): Adobe, Avantgo, DocsToGo, Easy Schedule (United Airlines), eReader, MobiPocket, WorldMate, Vindigo and Zagat. I believe that all except for MobiPocket will work with Mac.
However, what do I do during the first sync, when I want to get my PIMs syncing and PIM data migrating from my Treo 680 the the PD on the Mac? I assume that this might work:
    1. When do I delete all Treo 680 3rd party apps, before I sync the PIMs or does it matter as long as I turn off the 3rd party conduits?
    2. Only sync the PIMs first until I see that they are working. Do this with conduit set to handheld overwrites desktop.
    3. Get Mac-compatible apps from the makers, install them on the Mac and, using MS, sync and install them on my Treo. This entails correctly setting the conduits and following MS's instructions when the process is a little tricky (ie, Vindigo, Avantgo). I don't want to update any of these apps via wireless so I'm hoping that Missing Sync can do the syncing job for all of them.
Zagat isn't on their supported apps list but Zagat does indicate that it works with Mac. I don't know what that means.
Does anyone have any comments. Thanks.

Since Palm Desktop and Missing Sync are not Apple products you'd probably be better off posting your question on the Missing Sync forums:
