Missing System Prefs Apps

My .Mac and Accounts apps have suddenly disappeared.
Any advice? Fixes? Causes?
Do I have to reinstall everything?
Running OS 10.4.6 on a G5

Try deleting BOTH of these:
~(yourhome)/library/caches/com.apple.preferencepanes.cache
~(yourhome)/library/preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Then log out and back or restart. You'll need to reset a few of your System Prefs.

  • Missing System Pref

I just installed 10.5.6 then upgraded to 10.5.8 on my wife's G4 IBook. When I went into System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver > Desktop the check-box for Translucent Menu Bar wasn't there.
It is there on my Mac Pro.
Anyone have an explanation and a fix. My wife hates the translucent menu bar.

Go to the main Apple Download Site, locate the 10.5.8 Combo Updater and download it (759 GBs - she's a biggie) then reinstall the update using the Combo Updater.
I strongly suggest you do the following before reinstalling the update:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Also, be sure to quit any open applications. For more security during updates boot into safe mode before any system updates. (Note: There is no wireless available in safe mode. Use Ethernet for any Internet needs until after you have the update installed and have restarted.)

  • System Preferences App running sluggish?

The System Prefs App seems to be running sluggish lately...mainly when accessing the network preferences pane.  I noticed the permissions for this app are different than most other apps (see below)
Could the permissions be causing the sluggish, spinning ball behavior?  Just started about a month ago.

I don't think so. My system prefs permissions are the same. My network prefs pane opened in about a second.
I suppose I'd try trashing the permissions file (com.apple.systempreferences.plist) which is in ~/Library/Preferences and restarting and seeing if that fixes the problem. (You'll have to redo all your system preferences, as they will be reset to default).
~/Library is hidden. If you hold down option look in the Go menu in the Finder it will appear.

  • Preview missing -  no menubar clock - System Prefs won't open....help!

Wow. Preview is missing (it shows up in the Application window as a zero K app, then when I click on it, it vanishes), all the Preview docs I had on my desktop are neutral icons ( just a white rectangle), and also my menubar clock is gone. System Preferences won't open. Help! I've tried repairing permissions but that's as far as I know what to do. Thanks, Chris

Wow, I feel a tiny bit proud of myself. And actually, Disk Warrior eventually helped,in a circuitous way. I reloaded the Combo Update for 10.3.9, that seemed to rejuvenate Preview. But still no System Prefs, no menubar clock. I right-clicked on System Preferences ( that
right-click or option-click is really useful sometimes, because it can open
packages and other single-icon deals that you can't see into otherwise - I
really recommend a 2-button mouse, I was resistant to it after 20 years of Mac-ing but the 2 buttons combined
with a scroll wheel is way better than the Apple mouse and the Dell mouse
is about 10 bucks on eBay)... once that was cracked, there was a Terminal
icon which I clicked on... wwhich indicated that there was a
pref file it couldn't find. When I searched for it with Find, there it was
in the 'REscued Items" folder from DiskWarrior. Dropped it in where the
Terminal readout indicated it was missing, and voila! A restart, and I
have System Prefs again and a menubar clock. The only thing still FU is
that shift-3 isn't working to get a snapshot of the screen so in order to
generate a PDF from the screen I have to use Grab and finagle there. I
have a feeling, though, that I'll find a way to fix it now. And as you
know, sometimes these things weirdly self-correct after a while, a few
dozen restarts, whatever. At any rate if that's all that I have to contend
with it's not a big deal. So -= DW helped in the end! Thanks to the respondents on this issue- C

  • System Pref. Missing ?

My systems Pref. App is totally missing from my system now...? I dont have the Tiger install DVD anymore, is there anyway of getting this App back

You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.
If you're not in the US, you may need to go through the regional Apple Store that serves your location to find the contact number. Here's a list of links to all of those -

  • Preview.app ignoring system prefs, bug?

    greetings,
    switched to 10.7 recently.
seem to be having a problem with preview.app.
i have various setting saved as follows:
    system pref -> general:
         restore windows... = unselected
         highlight color = Gold
         show scroll bars = always
    system pref -> desktop:
         Translucent menu bar = unselected
unfortunatly, preview.app seems to ignore all of these.
all my other programs are following my system pref settings, except preview.
i ran across this forum thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/18432932#18432932
i've deleted all the preview prefs and temp files in ~/Library mentioned in the above thread.
    but that hasn't solved it.
    anyone else have this problem?
    any suggestion?
    thanks for any feedback-

    10.7.4, MBPro

    I have this same problem.
I have two machines, one's a self-contained Macbook Air - I don't see this problem. The other is a Mac Pro at the office - where I see this problem (see the same symptom with TextEdit, but not with any other apps).  I think I've isolated the problem on the MacPro to the fact that my home directory on the MacPro is a UFS disk mounted via NFS.  Same machine, different user who's home directory lives on the local HFS+ disk does not exhibit this issue.  I should note that this different user also had administrator priveledges.  Admittedly, I haven't tried making a dummy users with a cross-mounted home directory.
I've also noticed that when 'Repairing Permissions' on my HFS+ disk holding the OS (Macintosh HD) while logged in as an admin reveals the following error:
Group differs on "Users" should be 80; group is 0.
Unable to set owner and group on "Users" error 1: Operation not permitted
Unable to set permissions on "Users" error 1: Operation not permitted
Not sure if this 'Repair Permissions' error is related.  Either way, am not sure what the correct permissions should be.
I note that I have limited understanding regarding how permissions are handled between,1) the local machine running 10.7.4 from an HFS+ disk, and 2) the server hosting a UFS disk which is mounted via NFS.  However, am certain that my user has the same UID and GID between the two machines.  The entire /Users disk is mounted via NFS.
An additional symptom for me is that when trying to use 'Open Recent' in Preview.app or TextEdit.app, the dropdown menu is empty after closing the app and restarting.  If the app stays open, it remembers recent files that were open.  However, if I close the app, the 'recents' dropdown menu is empty.
I've tried deleting all the preference files as mentioned above.  I've also tried shifting all my Cache directories to live on HFS+ disk (via a soft link).  Problem persists.
None of these errors exist on my Macbook Air where all disks are local and formatted as HFS+, making it seem like my issue is connected with the NFS mount of the UFS disk.  However,  I could be wrong.
Nevertheless, yes I have this same symptom, and yes I too would appreciate a clue as to how I might remedy the problem.
    Thanks.

  • Apps auto-launch on startup, despite System Prefs and quitting before shutdown.

All apps that were open before shutdown are relaunching themselves upon startup.
This behavior occurs even if I quit each application individually before initiating system shutdown.
This behavior occurs whether I tick or untick the following settings within System Preferences / General:
    • Ask to keep changes when closing documents.
    • Close windows when quitting an application.
This behavior occurs despite none of the apps being listed within System Prefs / Login Items.
Examples of auto-launching apps (behavior occured just now with these): TextEdit, Dictionary, Calendar, Contacts, Safari, Firefox, Excel, Acrobat.
I am the administrator and only user on this machine.

    Back up all data.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box markedAllow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use  another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take a few minutes to run, or perhaps longer if you have literally millions of files in your home folder. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1 or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Boot into Recovery. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • App Store ignoring System Pref. settings

Today I awoke to an App Store notification that there were updates available.  I was given two choices, 1) Install 2) Later (with some options).  I opened App Store app to see what updates were supposedly available and there was the one update I was putting off which was XCode.  I didn't want to install it now.  I knew that I had changed the App Store settings in System Preferences to olny check for updates but not act on them or download them so I opened System Prefs. and verified this.  Sure enough, I had only one item checked (Automatically check for updates).  Everything else was unchecked.
    So, I have a few quesstions;
Why is App Store ignoring its own settings and download an app I didn't want yet?
Why did the notification only offer me two options (again ignoring its own settings)?
Why didn't the notification tell me which updates were available?
    And some comments;
This is just an unacceptable way to approach updates, IMHO.  I need control over what is going to be downloaded and when (bandwidth control and timing).  I must know what is ready for update beforehand so I can understand what it means and be able to opt out or delay it to a point when I am ready (control over what is going to be updated vs what is not and when).
    --Carl-

First, open Disk Utility, select your hard disk, go to Partition and create a volume. Move your files to it. Then, press Command and R keys in boot, open Disk Utility, erase the Mac volume and reinstall. When the install ends, transfer your files to your account and delete the volume

  • I have a previously installed app's mobileme sync pref. still in my mobileme sync list in system prefs. Any suggestions on how to remove this?

I have a previously installed app's mobileme sync pref(com.panic.transmit.Favorites) still in my mobileme sync list in system prefs. Any suggestions on how to remove this?

Thanks again for the idea. I just tried it and it didn't work... sort of. iTunes is syncing the photos because I can see that it's optimizing them and syncing them without crashing. Then it says that my iPhone sync is complete and I can safely remove iPhone. But again, when I go into the Camera/Photos app nothing. When I bring up the camera and then touch the the little double square icon on the bottom left the only thing that comes up is a title at the top that says Camera Roll. Then in the middle of the screen is a big icon of a camera and the words No Photos under that. There's no way for me to go to a list of my iPhoto albums. UGH! What's up with this?

  • Why is the padlock missing from System Preferences, App Store?

I noticed that System Preferences, App Store no longer shows a padlock at the lower left hand corner, yet other System Preference windows show the padlock. Why is that? Is there a way to restore the padlock? I have already tried "repairing" my install and the padlock did not come back. Thank you.

This will answer everyone of y'all, why some have it and why some don't.
System Preferences---> Security & Privacy---> (unlock the PadLock)---> Advance---> checkmark the "Require an administrator password to access system-wide preferences."
Before I checked that, I had the same set up as FoxFifth. Where App Store, Time Machine and others did not have the PadLock. However, after checking it. The App Store and Time Machine did have a PadLock.

  • Missing System Apps After Downgrade

    Hello All -
I recently downgraded from Yosemite BETA back to Mavericks for multiple reasons. During my invite to test Yosemite I followed all instructions, more specifically the backing up of my computer prior to upgrading. I used Time Machine to back up.
Now that I am downgrading, I restored from Time Machine. I have 99% of my stuff back, but I am missing System Preferences from the OS. It simply appears as question mark as seen in the attached image. I see I am also missing Terminal, and possible others. What is the fix?
More Info: When I click on Apple > System Preferences, nothing happens. There is only one account on my computer and I am the Administrator.

Step one is to DL and reinstall the 10.9.4 COMBO update. If that doesn't fix things, DL the full 10.9.4 installer, save a copy, and reinstall it. If neither work, contact Apple since they recommended that you rely on TM for restoration, rather than a bootable backup/clone of your previously good 10.9.4 installation.

  • Backblaze problem made System Prefs hang in Maverick

I am on a Macbook Pro, OS 10.9.1 . I use Backblaze for offsite backups.
I noticed this morning that the Backblaze icon was missing from my main system menu bar, so I went to Spotlight, searched "backblaze," and clicked on what came up. The system began to simultaneously open both a Backblaze app and my System Preferences. Then both hung and became unresponsive, so I had to force quit both of them.
Now the Backblaze icon is back in the system menu bar, but nothing happens when I click it--no menu drops down, etc. Also, I can no longer open System Preferences -- when I choose it in the Apple menu, it bounces for a while, then hangs, and I have to force quit.
I've tried fixing permissions, which didn't help. Anyone have any thoughts? I've also written Backblaze but haven't heard from them yet, and I suspect they will say that a problem with System Prefs is a Mac problem, not theirs.

seems to have fixed itself after a couple of days.

  • MBP Will not wake properly from sleep-flash of screen and keyboard for a bit every few seconds.  Under guest account, wakes up just fine.  I also cannot unlock various padlocks to change settings in e.g. system prefs. security?  Any help, I'm dyin!

Not waking up from sleep-flashes lighted keyboard and screen, and I cannot unlock the padlocks in the system to change settings, look at keychain, etc.

Still cannot unlock system prefs/users etc.   Also, many applications are returning errors like:  "failed to obtain the necessary authorization"  or " '' failed to obtain permission" so I've attached a portion of my log, showing when I attempt to unlock (or click on the padlock) in system preferences - User Accounts:
