Missing the Archive Utility.app

Hello all,
It has taken me a while to discover this, but I am completely missing the Archive Utility that comes with the OS from the Core Services folder in the library. I cannot find the app anywhere on my computer and I think my kids have somehow deleted it. I cannot find a way to re-install that program from my system install disks, and I cannot find the program at Apple.com for download. Any suggestions? It is a pain not to have it in my system!

Thanks for giving the directory path - I have wanted to do something about this app for some time and could find almost no information on it.
My system (OS 10.4.11) launches BOMArchivehelper.app as the default for various compressed files (.zip, .rar, etc.), and for this purpose it seems nearly, if not completely, useless. Instead I launch Stuffit (or right-click, "open with") and either open compressed files or drag and drop. Once in a while I forget and double click a file's Finder icon, and almost always regret it. Did this about two hours ago for a ~ 75 MB zip file and the little sourcer's apprentice is still grinding away with the progress bar moving about about 1 mm every 20 minutes. There is no program icon in the dock and if I call up the Force Quit Applications panel, the utility is no where to be seen.* I'm torn between ignoring the useless little troll of a program and shutting everything down, so I can reboot and get it out of my sight.
I finally reset the default for zip files to Stuffit, so it shouldn't happen again, but I'd like to know if there ius a real use for BOM, or is it just there because Apple felt obligated to include thi type of app in the operating system?

  • Archive Utility app in Mavericks is gone

After my last update my abiity to unzip files quit working. I can still zip files.
I looked for the Archive Utility app in System › Library › CoreServices. It is definitely not there. My CoreServices folder list goes from Applications (folder) to Automator Launcher.
How do I get the Archive Utility app back?

    dsharpe,
I had a look in my /System/Library/CoreServices folder, and between Applications and Automator Launcher.app I have Archive Utility.app and AuthBrokerAgent (which seems to be part of  CoreFoundation networking).
You could boot into Recovery mode and select Reïnstall Mac OS X from the Mac OS X Utilities menu — that should restore Archive Utility and whatever else might be missing from your Mavericks installation.

  • Archive Utility.app "Error identifying a writable temporary folder"

I had to restore my Mac today from a Time Machine backup. Everything went swimmingly, except for now I can't seem to unzip files using Archive Utility.app. In any folder under the root path / on Macintosh HD I get following error:
Error identifying a writable temporary folder. Try moving the archive to another volume.
However, if I move the archive to one of my Firewire external drives and unzip it from there, it works.
I've tried the standard Repair Disk Permissions from Disk Utility, using the diskutil repairpermissions / command and booting into my install disk and trying both of the previous from there. Unfortunatly it didn't solved the problem.
I noticed that when Time Machine restored my Mac the /private folder became visible, so I used Terminal and set it back to hidden. Could there be a problem with the permissions of my /private folder that Repair Disk Permissions hasn't fixed?
Any more suggestions would be ace as I can't seem to find anybody with the same issue via Google. Thanks in advance!

A better and safer syntax is the single command:  sudo rm -rf /var/folders/*  since if  the first line above does not succeed, or is entered in a separate terminal session, the second command will remain pointed at the top level of your home folder by default, effectively telling the computer to ERASE ALL CONTENTS of "~/"  your account's home folder.  In that event, all personal content - desktop files, downloads, documents, local email storage, music, movies, favorite bookmarks, and so on - will be immediately deleted!
Caution is also recommended, since /var/folders  is temporary storage for a lot of applications.  At minimum quit any other open applications and be prepared to restart.
Naturally any command involking "sudo" will only run within an administrative account.  If you don't have an admin account, if the computer is not your personal property, if the computer returns an error when invoking "sudo" or if you simply have doubts or questions about what each element of these commands does,  well that's simply nature's way of saying "call IT."

  • Using Archive Utility.app from Terminal

    Hi there!
Does anybody know if it is possible to send commands or options to Archive Utility.app via Terminal?
It is possible to invoke Archive Utility.app and pass it the path to a zip file, and it will uncompress it. However, I would like to also pass it a destination path, and see what other options it may have.
    Thanks in advance!
    davewg

It's because this will be done via a script and I want to show a progress bar to the users, then they can see something is happening - Archive Utility.app has a very nice little progress bar! :o)

  • I don't see my iPhone in the AirPort utility App

I just installed my new Time Capsule today, I'm backing my mac now to the time machine
How do I backup my iPhone? I downloaded the AirPort utility App on my iPhone but all I see is my capsule...

simple english, your iphone does NOT backup to the time machine, only Mac computers backup to the TM
but, if you backup your phone to your Mac (either via wire or wifi), then indirectly your iphone is backed up to TM each time your Mac gets backed up to TM

  • Has anyone download the Airport Utility app on their iPod Touch or iPhone?

Just was wondering if anyone downloaded the Airport Utility app from the app store onto their iPod Touch, iPad or iPhone? You can see a picture of your Time Capsule's nework and a picture of your Time Capsule right on your iOS device (iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad) and it's quite nice that you can actually see a picture of your network. It shows current status and a diagram/picture of your network. You can also make changes to your network right from your iOS device. This is a nice feature to have on your portable device.
I was just wondering how anyone else liked this feature?

  • The Archive Utility won't stop trying to unarchive

    hi there,
i downloaded a zip drive yesterday and the unarchive utility won't stop. i pressed cancel, and the cancel button greyed out. i've gone to force quit and it doesn't do anything. i've tried to shut down the computer and it says the shut down was canceled by the archive utility. any suggestions?\
    thank you!

try killing the process from Activity monitor.
if that doesn't help kill the loginwindow process that belongs to your user using Activity monitor. this will force an immediate user logout. if all else fails hold the power button to force a shutdown.

  • I bought my Mac with education pricing a week ago and missed the $100 Mac App Store promo

Long story short, I bought my first Mac a week ago with Education Pricing, mainly because Apple marked their education site with a banner reading "Last Call for Apple Education Pricing." Lo and behold, I received an email from Apple this morning about a new promotion for those buying with Education Pricing getting a $100 credit to the Mac App Store if they buy between June 16, 2011 and September 20, 2011. Is there any way I can receive the $100 credit even though I bought a few days before the promotion started? I would have waited longer to buy if I hadn't seen the "Last Call" banner on the Education Pricing page.

You can get a $100 education discount no matter when you buy it.  The email seemed to be just informaing you about the offer.  You can take your receipt into the Apple Store and they should be able to deduct the discount from your purchase.  If they are "rude" about it, then return your laptop and repurchase it with the discount.

  • The other day I set up my Airport Extreme to share a 3TB hard drive and it show up fine in the Airport Utility App. That day was great I could access it on both my Mac's. Now though I can't fine the hard drive in that same App and have tried to fix it.

I've already tried disconnecting and reconnecting the hard drive to the Airport Extreme, No luck.
I've tried adding it all over again. No luck.
Why did it even loose the settings in the first place?

It sounds like you just have 2 formatted drives (SSD, HDD) that are not configured as a Fusion drive. If so, you have to manually move files from the SSD to the HDD and visa versa.
If your system would have come configured with a Fusion drive (SSD and HDD 'fused' together) then OS X would maintain file movement from the SSD to the HDD without user intervention.
Look here then scroll down to Introducing Fusion Drive for a brief explanation.

  • What is the maximum file size allowed by Yosemite's Archive Utility?

I've seen radically different answers to this question, ranging from ".zip files have a 4GB size limit" to "no limit other than the OS maximum file size". It's been very difficult to find current info on this.
I have lots of large folders full of recording projects --- I'm talking up to 45GB or so --- and I've been experimenting with different methods of zipping them in preparation for cloud backup. Several applications have been willing to zip my enormous folders into archives, but then choke when unzipping them, telling me that the files cannot be unzipped or are corrupted. Using the "Compress" shortcut in the finder has so far yielded the best results, keeping all necessary resource forks, etc., and unzipping properly, even when other apps have insisted the files are corrupted. However, I'm afraid to continue with this procedure until I can get a straight answer on this issue: have I just been lucky so far? IS there an actual size limit?
...It only seems to work when I both zip and unzip with the Archive Utility. Other archiving apps will either render the included projects unreadable by my recording software when zipping (I suspect because of alteration or stripping of resource forks), or will refuse to read the giant .zip archives generated by Archive Utility.
I've set up the Archive Utility to produce .zip files, as I feel these are the most likely to be recognized by a variety of cloud storage services.ny
...Any guidance would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi,
The 1,048,576 rows & 16,384 columns is the

    1. Use VBA to read the file line by line and split/examine the import file in sections. If you have further question about the VBA, please post your question to the MSDN forum for Excel

  • Hi! Missing disk utility apps and problems with external disc

Hi everybody! after installing snow leopard, as a way to get to lion, I dont have the disk utility apps.
Besides Im having a lot of problems with an external new Toshiba 1T disc that I try to use with Time machine cause I daily receive the OSX msg CANT REPAIR THE DISK REFORMAT IT!
Thanks a lot to all of the community
I do love Apple product. And counting the days for the iOS 6 upgrade!!

Before you go to Lion, just a reminder.  I know you recently moved up to Snow Leopard.  Be sure that everything you were running in Leopard, and now in SL, will work for you in Lion.
Remember, Rosetta and all PPC apps are gone (Word 2004, some versions of PhotoShop etc)  Check the compatibility list before you ditch SL.
As far as your Disk Utility problem, how hard is it to reinstall SL?
I've taken a screen shot of my Utilities folder to show you what you are looking for. The Utilities folder as mentioned above is in the Aplication Folder (or you may have pulled it out to the side bar as well, in which case there will be an icon and the word Utilities in Places in the side bar.

  • Cannot unzip .zip even with Archive Utility

    Hi,
I have problem unzipping a .zip file. When I use the Archive Utility to unzip it, it yields a file with the same name with .zip.cpgz on its end. When I subsequently make another trial - to unzip this new file, it yields the very same file only with .zip.cpgz 2 in the end of its name. A repeated process (now with any of these files, either original, first .cpgz or second .cpgz 2) yields a file with appropriate .cpgz #. Repeating the process further seemed to me futile. I hope writing here would in the long run yield an unzipped original .zip file.
    Many thanks for your help,
    pwyll.

You probably won't see this, but did you ever zip a file during this time and then unzip it with another program and find data missing? The same thing happened to me where I zipped an assignment with archive utility, then when I tried to unzip it it would just make copy after copy. Once it was unzipped by my professior there was missing data. THen when I downloaded another program to unzip the original zipped file, that data was missing, too! I tried it again and zipping the file kep deleting part of my file!

  • Archive Utility brings up error message when trying to unarchive protected zip file

    Hey there,
I've been zipping images with password protection using different applications, some with a Lightroom Plug-In Zip-Exporter, some with a stand alone app such as "Archiver". Now when I try to unzip these images on OSX 10.6 the Archive Utility brings up an the error: "Unable to unarchive "Name of File" into "Desktop". (Error 1 - Operation not permitted.) I'm logged in with an admin account. I tried this on a macbook pro and on an imac, both 10.6, same problem. Now when I try to unzip the file using third party such as Stuffit expander or Archiver, it unzips the files without a problem.
any idea what's wrong with the OSX Archive Utility?

Nothing's wrong with it except that it doesn't support encrypted .zip files.  You'll just have to use third-party software, or a Terminal command, to unzip those.

  • Archive Utility .zips aren't always compatible

I am using the standard Mac OSX archive utility (ctrl-click and select Create Archive of "X") to zip a folder of files for upload to a website (where they are to be decompressed).
If I use Winzip in Windows on my PC... no problem.
If I use the archive utility in Mac OSX, my website spits back an error saying the first file is missing from the archive and it gives up. (The file is there if I decompress the zip file locally).
This is not the first time I've found problems with the Mac's .zip files. For example, PHPMyAdmin rejects the Mac's .zip files as being the wrong size.
Anyone know what's going on and a way around it.
I have yet to get a grasp of the command line, but would using gzip be a better idea? How do I gzip an entire folder? Anyone know a good free zip utility that will not produce this error?
Thanks very much for any advice/ideas in advance

Arggg!! I hate Stuffit!! Ever since System 8!
In any event, if PHPAdmin doesn't like your ZIP files, it certainly isn't going to take a Stuffit file.
On www.versiontracker.com there should be lots of free dropzip and droptar, dropgz utilities to do what you want.
You can also type "tar -zcvf <archive>.tar.gz <folder>" in the Terminal, where "<folder>" is the folder you want to archive and <archive> is the name of the archive you want to create.
