Usually when the phone shows just the white Apple logo, it indicates an issue with the system software that prevents the phone from finishing it's boot sequence. When this happens, you will need to restore the phone, which removes all data and replaces the system software with a fresh set.
Since the phone is not seen in iTunes when it's in this state, you will have to put it into DFU mode for iTunes to see it.
To put the phone in DFU mode:
- make sure the phone is connected to a computer with the current version of iTunes on it.
- hold the sleep/wake button and the home button simultaneously for 8 seconds.
- let go of the sleep/wake button and continue pressing the home button. The iTunes screen will show a short progress bar then show a dialog box stating that an iPod was detected that is in recovery mode.
-click OK
-click the Restore button in the middle of the iTunes page
After the restore the phone should be back up and running and you can sync your data back.

I must be missing the obvious - How to update my software version 5.0.1

When I plugged my iPad 2 into the sync I updated the iTunes version
On my device page I clicked onthe update to 5.0.1 and nothing happens
My desktop is not a MAC
Is there required software it needs to update my iPad to the higher version?
my current is 4.3.5 (not listed below)

You may have to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily to install. Then download and install the iOS update. After you install iOS 5, you will be able to install subsequent updates via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer)

10.4.7 Server- Client login problem - missing the obvious?

used a similar setup on Xserve G4 and G5 without problems ...
Client: 10.4.7 MacBook/ G4 PowerBook
Server - dome G4 iMac - 10.4 retail - upgraded to 10.4.7
- Kerberos running
- DNS resolves to FQDN on server and client including reverse lookup
- User home share is mounted on client under Network
- from Finder -> Connect to Server you can access the home share
- authentication and login works for a user Without a home folder on the server
- when logging in as a user with home folder on the server you don't get an error message on the client, but login screen stays
- on the server it shows AFP connection for the user
- you can SSH into the client
- clearing caches etc on the client does not make a difference
- IP manually configured on server and client
- network eliminated by using cross-over lead
- client Bind successful
- client displays network users
On the server you can login as an account with home folder on AFP share and get access to the homefolder
- kept path to homefolder short
- same happens with homefolder on the default Users share
Any suggestions?

Try removing ACL's controling the drive that the homefolders are on.

LR - Presentation Capability Missing the Obvious

Adobe seems to have overlooked one common presentation capability when designing LR. LR has a Print & Web module, but what about PDF presentations. I find more and more that a client will want a PDF presentation of the digital images that I have prepared for them. It is such a quick and easy way for them to show their potential buyers/customers what it is they are selling. After all, Adobe created the PDF format, so why not include it in LR. It is such a simple way to show a selection of photo proofs to a client. They prefer it over a bunch of jpegs. I will use the slide show module and the web module much less often than the times that I need to make a PDF for a client.

Thanks a lot for the information. This is great. I really like how you can drag the text and scale the font size up and down. Now I think I will end up using the slide show module, but for PDF shows. Very nice.

I set up my iCloud account, moving from MobileMe recently and everything works fine on my Apple devices. Error in XML parsing. Im i missing something obvious.

I am new to XML and i cant seem to be able to iterate through the xml response.

Upsert of xmltype from given xpath - missing something obvious?

Version: 10.2.0.*2* EE
I am trying to do an upsert (update/ insert ) of an xmltype for a given xpath.
The xml data is being passed as an xmltype, the xpath is a string (varchar2), the new value is a string, varchar2.
If the node specified by the xpath exists this is trivial using updatexml; of course if the node doesn't exist nothing happens. I can check for the nodes existence using exists node, but I'm coming unstuck trying to figure out how to insert the node.
All the APIS I can find that insert XML (APPENDCHILDXML,INSERTXMLBEFORE, INSERTCHILDXML) do not take an xpath but require an xmltype. Which means if I am reading this right I have no choice but to parse the xpath varchar2 string to try and construct an xmltype (ugh!).
I can't find any API that just takes an xpath as a varchar2 and a value and gives me an xmltype. Ideally I don't even want that, would just like an API that returns the updated XML which has either had the xpath updated (or inserted if it didn't exist) with the new value.
I am not an XML expert but I am pretty handy with SQL and PL/SQL. To me this just seems incredibly cumbersome just to do something as trivial as an upsert, so I am hoping I am missing something obvious!
Can soemone please set me straight with a pointer or example?
To top it all off the XML uses namespaces, but they aren't registered, there is no schema registration going on.

RMIC & Netbeans - am I missing something obvious?

I finally managed to get rmic to compile something without errors, but I can't find any additional files I thought it would create. I added the following to build.xml in my server application:

Ok, so I read some more recent tutorials (teaches me for reading an old book!) and I have some success. Except:

Obviously there are two issues;
1) Can't find the remote object's class

Maybe it's a simple mistake of not providing the right parameters/classpath to the rmiregistry, which I'm running from the command line and not through Netbeans (don't know how to do that).
Back to the reading! :)

Adding an application component - missing something obvious

Hi,
We just upgraded to portal (running server and portal on windows nt) and I am developing. We have reports already completed in reports 6i. However, I am having trouble adding them to the pages or even in the "other providers" listed in portlet repository. The report is connected, as when I click on "edit" and then "run," it runs. I just don't know what I need to do so that the report shows in the "application component" when I click on "add item."
I am sure that I am missing something obvious. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Am I Missing Something Obvious? Layer Mask Not Confined to Selection.

Hello, I really hope I am not missing anything obvious.
I am working on a .psd in Photoshop CC in which I used a selection to precisely remove a portion of a layer in a layer mask. The problem is that it is removing a percentage of the opacity in the non selected area. The brush has 100% Opacity, 100% Flow and is in Normal Mode. The layer has 100% Opacity, 100% Fill, and is in Normal Mode. I have tried restarting Photoshop and starting over from scratch. Here is an image of the issue.
My only other concern is that on Friday we had a power outage due to lightning and PS CC closed unexpectedly. Could my PS CC be corrupted? My computer has restarted since then. Any suggestions would be wonderful. Thanks!

The power outage should not have corrupted your Photoshop to cause this to happen. Worst that could have happened is Photoshop was forced to quit and your preferences did not get save for yourt panel layout and prefertence settings.
Is your brush filled with 100 black, the swatch looks dark but you may be at 90% black.? Your screenshot looks fine though as if the mask is working correctly, can you post a screenshot that better shwos the problem.

Sub picture highlight - missing the big picture

Windows 7 64-bit, Photoshop and Encore CS5, everything patched
I have been banging around on this for days, off and on, and I'm sure I must be missing something obvious. I created a menu in Photoshop but even if I use a built-in Encore menu (like Sunset), I cannot figure out how highlighting is supposed to work. Everything I try causes Encore to display both (=1) and (=2) layers at the same time, or nothing.
To make it as simple as possible.... Assumption is that the menu is already part of the Encore project so, from Encore, select the menu and edit it in Photoshop.
a) In Photoshop, I have a layer group named (+)PlayAll. Under it I have a text layer whose name is, not surprisingly, Play All.
b) Create (=1)highlight layer on top of the Play All text layer.
c) In (=1) layer, select the line tool and draw a line segment 3px high, I chose white.
d) Create (=2)highlight layer on top of (=1).
e) In that layer, draw a second line segment slightly above the first, same color and height.
f) Make sure the (=1) and (=2) layers' visibility is off.
g) Save the menu in Photoshop, close the menu.
In Encore:
a) Menu > Edit Menu Color Set is unavailable.
b) Menus tab page, Properties > Basic for the button, the Highlight list is unavailable.
c) In the Menu pane in the middle, if I click Show Normal Picture Subpicture Highlight, the button is not visible. If I click Show Selected Subpicture Highlight, both line segments are visible. If I click Show Activated Subpicture Highlight, both line segments are visible.
d) If I preview the menu in Encore, only (=1) line segment displays. Selecting that menu option does not cause the other segment to display.
I have tried the same thing with:
a) The Sunset menu
b) Circles placed on top of each other instead of offset line segments
Same results. I am missing something basic along the way.

I'm in CS4 at the moment. Help clearly says you can select the menu in the project or menu panels. Menu -> Menu Color Set is greyed out. In other words, I agree this is not operating properly.
But you do not have to select one of the state buttons; just select the menu in the Menu Viewer, and you can then access Menu Color Set.
I have confirmed this in CS5 also; I added the following commebnt in the CS5 help file for "Menu Color Sets":
To edit the menu color set, you must open the menu (which means to open it in the Menu Viewer) or, if open, select it in the menu viewer. "Define a menu color set" above describes this correctly. "Base a new color set ..." says to select the menu in the project or menu panels. This does not work; "edit menu color set" in greyed out under those conditions.

New Firefox seems to be missing the ability to create a new bookmark folder--any help is appreciated.

I just updated to the new Firefox, and now, when I try to create a new bookmark folder, the option is no longer there (I can see all my old folders, but the option "New folder," which used to be on the bottom of the drop-down menu, is gone. Nor do I see it anywhere else.

I really appreciate the speedy response. I did go into the Bookmarks Folder of the Knowledge Base, but actually don't see any article (I skimmed each of them) that deals with folders. The frustrating thing is that I've been able to create bookmark folders with no problem up until I updated Firefox to the latest version yesterday. Now the option to create a new folder does not appear.
I'm enclosing a screen shot of the dialog box; previously, when adding a bookmark, an option to "create folder" would appear at the lower left of this box.
I'm sorry if I'm missing something obvious. I really appreciate your time.
