Missing topics in pdf-document

Hello,
I am using RH 7 and creating WebHelp. I am also trying to create a pdf-document with the same content as the WebHelp. For some reason, the contents I specify for the pdf-document are only partly included in the pdf-document.
I use the TOC from the project where I have a some books without links (all the associated topics are included in the pdf-document all right), and one book with a link - these topics are not incuded in the pdf. All topics are included in the WebHelp without any problems.
So I am wondering if there is something that could prevent a topic from being included in a pdf-document? Does anybody know? And last, but not least, does anybody know how to solve this problem? I have compared the topics that are inclucded in the pdf with the ones that aren't, but I can't see any difference.
Thanks in advance for your reply!
Regards, Hanne
P.S. I have been through Printed Output on www.grainge.org without being able to find a solution.

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your suggestions, I am afraid I have not found a solution yet. Outputting to Word gave the same problem.
The TOC in the output is in fact different from the TOC in the TOC editor in the sense that missing topics are missing from both the TOC and the "body"  of the output. Sorry if I did not make that clear in my first post.
I have a feeling that I must be doing somthing wrong in the Chapter Layout part of the wizard for printed documentation. I have tried creating the books from scratch (by creating and renamingnthem) to see if that would help but it did not. My topics are not imported from Word; they have, however, at some point been imported as htm-files from another project as far as I remember.
The real mystery about it is that my pdf output worked all right in an earlier version of the project. My current project is a copy of that project. I am not aware of having changed anything in the pdf settings, and they look exactly the same (I have compared the settings field by field).
Do you have any suggestions for a way of "resetting" all pdf settings, or should I perhaps try to import the .hhc file from my previous project where they pdf is correct?
Thanks in advance!
Regards, Hanne

  • Missing topic in PDF

    Hi,
    I am using RH 9.
I have converted content created in RH 6 or 7 (not sure)
I have added a topic, it is in the TOC, and generated web output
I need to create a PDF.  The new topic does NOT appear in the in the PDF TOC or in the body of the PDF
Is there a fix for this?

When you use the Printed Documentation single source layout to create the PDF, the second step allows you to select the topic that will be included. You'll probably had the TOC filter set by default. If you change this to a folder, you'll be able to select the topic that isn't in the TOC and add it to the output.
BTW you may find it easier to create a Word file first and then PDF that.

  • Occasional letters missing in pdf document created in Acrobat XI Pro

I have been working on a pdf document created from Indesign By Acrobat XI Pro that will be for online download. The first version was fine. Links had to be added and some of the text coloured. After edits occasional letters have gone missing throughout the document. Why on earth is this happening? I now have to go through the entire document with a fine toothcomb before submitting it to my client again. It doesn't make me look good!
    Any ideas?
    Salli G.

I suspect that you somehow deleted the embedding of the fonts. Check the document properties and be sure all fonts are embedded.

  • Some PDF Documents are Missing Letters when Printing

We use a Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise (64-bit) server as our print server. Ever since we moved our printers to this server, several of our existing PDF documents have missing letters when they print. If you modify your print properties and choose "Print as Image", the documents print correctly with no missing letters.
The missing letters seem to come in specific combinations, such as ti, ft, fa, etc.
Our previous print server was a Windows Server 2003 (32-bit) machine and these documents all printed fine on that server.
Are there any known issues with printing PDF documents on a 64-bit print server, or with 64-bit drivers?
    Thank you for your time,
    Jason

This response will hopefully help you towards a solution—I have not encountered the specific problem you are facing.
The image you posted shows the fonts that are embedded in your document: both Calibri and Myriad Pro. However, the second instance of Calibri indicates that some some of the Calibri characters were encoded differently, and I suspect based on the combo characters you listed, these are glyphs and are what your printer is having trouble processing.
The usual solution for print server issues is to make sure all drivers and firmware are updated.
The answer to your question regarding embedding fonts completely is to change your Adobe pdf print preferences to embed all fonts, not just a subset. This must be done when the pdf is being created initially. You can change font embedding by choosing a joboption like Press Quality that includes full font embedding or by modifying the joboption you are already using. In Windows, you can do this at the time of print by selecting the Advanced button next to the printer selection dropdown and changing settings there, in advance by modifying the printing preferences from your printers menu, or by editing the joboptions in Acrobat Distiller.

  • Why PDF documents are missing icon of standard size?

    Hello,
My Adobe Reader is v11.0.6. It was originally installed on Win XP Home and worked OK.
Recently, I've moved it to Win7 Pro with the aid of Laplink PC Mover. It works OK, but PDF documents are missing its standard size icon, e.g. on Desktop. Precisely speaking, my closed PDF documents display as their icon the first page of the document with almost invisible miniature of PDF icon in its right lower corner.
I tried to take care of it with re-association and re-choosing right icon. This corrected the situation for a few seconds only.
I repaired the Reader installation also with the same effect.
The icon chosen is located in: C:\Windows\Installer\{AC76BAB6-7AD7-1033-7B44-AB0000000001} \PDFFile_8.ico. It's  of 256x256 pixels
Why this happen? How can one repair it?
    Andy148

Open Windows Explorer -> Tools -> Folder Options
    Go to the View tab
Check "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
    Hit Apply
All your PDF files on your desktop should now show with the generic PDF icon.

  • UNreadable text and missing images in sync'd pdf documents in iBooks

    Hi,
i was quite excited when i heard that iBooks 1.1 was going to be able to open pdf documents, so following an update to 1.1, i loaded up a number of pdfs onto the iPad, the majority worked perfectly, however i noticed that a couple, (when opened), all the embedded images were missing and in another document the text was unreadable, sort of looked like the text was overlapping with each other.
Can anyone shed some light on this?

All kinds of things can go wrong when reading pdfs, which can be made in variety of different ways. If the problem pdfs display fine in OS X Preview and Adobe Reader, best to let Apple know about need to fix iBooks reader via

  • New document alert: How to get PDF documents into Adobe Reader for iOS

Opening PDF Files in Reader for iOS (iPhone and iPad) has been very helpful to many users of Adobe Reader for iOS.  However, Apple has drastically changed the user interface in iOS 7, which made the original document obsolete.
According to Apple Developer Support's App Store Distribution page, 89% of devices connected to the App Store are using iOS 7 during a 7‑day period ending June 29, 2014.
Because of the exceptionally high iOS 7 adoption rate, Adobe Reader for iOS version 11.3 now supports iOS 7 only.
Here are the new How-To documents for iOS 7.
How to get PDF documents into Adobe Reader for iOS (iPad on iOS 7 version)
How to get PDF documents into Adobe Reader for iOS (iPhone on iOS 7 version)
(It had to be split into two separate documents because each contains way too many screenshots.)
Hope these documents are as helpful as the original one.
Please let us know if you have any feedback or suggestions on the topics for other help documents/tutorials.

    Dennis (or any Adobe rep),
Any updates to the OP's question? I'm with a large government agency, and we're moving away from GoodReader for reasons I can't go into here, and the ability to add user-defined bookmarks within the app is a mandatory feature for the document reader we select. I have the latest version of Adobe Reader (11.6.1) installed on my government iPad, and the ability to add user-defined bookmarks still seems to be missing. Does Adobe have any plans to add this feature, or is it already present and I'm simply overlooking it?
    Thanks,

  • Protecting and tracking PDF documents?

    Hello!
We are about to build our new website and need to find a solution to make downloadable PDF documents available for both clients and registered members of our (3) new website(s).
A colleague I spoke to, however, told me that we need to find a solution of some sort to protect against unwanted distribution of the PDF documents that we make available through our website(s).
Initially, I had no idea of how to do this since this is a major issue for companies around the globe that are already struggling with piracy, but he then mentioned something about the Adobe Tracker software.
Does anyone know if that is possible through Adobe Tracker? I've read a bit about this software, but it seemed very vague on what it is it really does?
Perhaps any expert Adobe Acrobat users in here can help me with some answers on this particular topic.
    Thank you very much!

    Thanks, Dave.
I am about to start building our new company website on the WordPress platform, and we would like to add a feature that enables registered users to be able to download select PDF documents that we will offer to our clients, users, etc.
We are just looking for some fairly efficient way of protecting these PDF documents. I have found a plugin for WordPress called 'WP PDF Stamper', maybe that will help us a bit with this issue.
I guess we could make it work with doing it two ways:
    1) Require user registration in order to gain download privileges (items are "free", but then we at least get some information about our users in return for the "free" items we provide)
    2) Secure & Watermark our PDF documents to ensure that the content cannot be copied nor printed.
How does that sound? Something I'm missing?
    Cheers!

  • Acrobat 8.1 Pro Recent Update Lost PDF Document Icon

Adobe Acrobat 8.1 on Windows Vista. With the update that came on 02/15/2008, after successful install, I no longer have any PDF document icons. All my PDF documents have the Windows generic icon and the files are not recognizeable as PDF documents. All PDF documents function normally. it's just the icons are missing. My .pdf file association is with Adobe Acrobat 8.1. Any way to get back my PDF icons on PDF files?

Same problem here, and, as in your case, it showed up only after the most recent Adobe update--in fact, I started a topic on this before you did. Maybe you didn't see it--nobody else has posted a reply, either.
The 2/18 reply-poster's FAQ link concerns file associations, but that's not the problem here; file associations are still correct. The problem is that what are called LIVE ICONS in Vista no longer work for PDF files. The 'preview handler' underlying functionality still seems to work--that is, if you have the PREVIEW PANE enabled in Windows Explorer you can still see an accurate, detailed thumb of the file. (You access the preview pane under Organize>Layout.)
But the smaller, quick-and-dirtier preview that should show if you have the folder view set to 'large icons' or 'extra large icons', and that should also show in the DETAILS PANE, if you have that enabled, is gone--only a generic Acrobat icon now shows.
In Vista, these live icons are automatically enabled on the desktop, at least if you have the 'aero' graphics turned on. Thus, if you drag a .jpg, .gif, or similar file onto your desktop, you now see a thumbnail instead of the generic icon you saw in previous Windows desktops. Up until last week's update, you also saw .pdf previews on the desktop. But no longer.
I have no better clue than you do about how to get them back. The preview handler designations in the Registry don't show any obvious problem, although the recent Adobe update may have made changes in there that I'm not aware of. (In the CLSID and CLASS keys, for instance.)
My guess would be that there's some changed .dll that didn't get registered properly, or have the right permissions assigned, in the recent update. But this is just a sheer guess. Given all the problems with Acrobat 8 I've seen in these forums, I'm not going to go blindly experimenting on CLSID/Class keys or dlls.
I can't find anything at Microsoft.com or the Microsoft KB about this either--just boilerplate promo for users or developers about how great their live icons are. But for what it's worth, Acrobat is not the only program that has trouble with Live Icons. Microsoft office 2007 live icons are just as screwed up as the PDF ones have become. In fact, they have been screwed up from the beginning!
Once in a great while an Excel 2007 .xlsx file sitting on the desktop will show its preview. But most of the time, just the generic icon shows. I have never managed to see a live icon for a Microsoft Word file. Only .jpgs and .gifs are completely reliable (so far, knock on wood).
    Pretty lame.
By the way, there were also Windows Updates last week ('patch tuesday') and it is slightly possible that they had something to do with this lost functionality. But I don't think so. I can't spend all my time tracking & troubleshooting every update of everything, so I can't state this with 100% certainty, but I am PRETTY sure that the .pdf file live icon problem happened AFTER the last Adobe update and BEFORE the last Windows update.
I wish the Adobe Updater would have a convenient way of showing you which updates were installed when. Vista has this.

  • Why a pdf document with embedded fonts can be copied but is not searchable in pdf reader

I am writing a pdf files with embedded subset fonts. As required, I am including the ToUnicode and CIDSet objects. To test, I created a simple PDF with two Hebrew characters. I can select the two characters and copy to the clipboard, and paste it properly into another application such as Word. But I am not able to search for a word containing these two characters. Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) displays the message that the word was not found. So in essence, I have created a PDF document which can be copied properly, but is not searchable. Any idea what I might be missing when creating the document?
Additional information: 1. The file in question is a minimal file with just two characters. I have tested with many such files in many different languages including English. None of the files are searchable. 2. Curiously, if I search for the letter 'e', Adobe reader highlights an incorrect word, even if the letter 'e' does not exists in the file. 3. Adobe acrobat is also not able to search within this file, however when I save the file to another disk file, the saved file now is searchable. I confirmed that the major objects such as the font-file, ToUnicode object, CID object, and the font description objects are the same in the saved file. However, one of the font object is brought up closer to the top of the file. 4. FoxIt is able to search these files properly.

I figured the app might have that ability - considering you can add text, highlight, add a signature, annotate and draw - so my thought was why not delete a page, or rearrange for that matter?.. That should be an option, this way we don't have to export to one of the other apps to delete or rearrange..
    Thanks for the help, Bernd.
BTW if anyone is looking - PDF Max can do all of the above and delete and rearrange. With PDF Splicer you can delete and rearrange as well, but it has no other features.
And as for Steve Werner whose comment was deleted after it got to my inbox, it is much more than a Reader, as you can plainly see from the amount of tasks the Reader app can do above.

  • How do you apply the same password policy to every PDF document you create with inDesign?

    All,
    Adobe peeps!,
I don't know if this is really supported with inDesign 5.5, but here is my my use case:
I constantly create more than 10 PDFs a day using inDesign
On  all PDF's I create, i want to apply password security to protect them
But in order to do so, within inDesign, I am   always forced to go to the "security dialogue" pane to set up the same permission  and passwords over and over again
    This gets tiring :/
So what I am hoping to do is  the following:
Like acrobat, I want to create a password policy within inDesign
I want all PDFs created to have such a password policy  be automatically applied
I know acrobat supports something like this (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/acrobat/pro/using/WS58a04a822e3e50102bd615109794195ff-7d68.w.h tml), but, unless I may have missed something, the Acrobat feature is limited. That is, the help link  does not tell me how to automatically do this with Acrobat either (the link does not explain to me how to "automatically apply the same password security policy to every PDF document I save within the application). I think the only way to do so is via "Adobe LiveCycle Rights Management ES", but for non server users, I am hoping there is another way.
    So my questions are:
Is it possible to create password security policies in inDesign?
Is it possible to apply the same password security policy to every PDF i create in inDesign?
If not, can I change default settings within Acrobat ProX to automatically apply a password security policy everytime I save a PDF?
If all fails, do you guys know of any extensions that can support this?
Any help would be great. Thanks!

    Steve,
Thanks for your notes. To follow up on your response.
Bummer. I kinda had a hunch at this inDesign limitation.
I have been aware of the method for setting up of a security policy within Acrobat. While this feature does cut down some of the work involved in creating and applying password policies to pdfs, what I am looking for with Acrobat is to apply the same password policy to every document I save from the app. Automatically. Without having to manualy select a policy.
I think my solution will have to lie in me creating some sort of script to help support this need. I don't think Acrobat Pro X has the capabilities to allow me to tinker with, say, creating a save PDF preset that will allow me to automatically apply a password policy.
PS. I am using acrobat pro x.
