Missing USB connectors on K8N SLI Platinum

I recently ordered the K8N SLI Platinum, but when it arrived the board didn't match up with the picture you can see here:
http://www.msicomputer.co.uk/Products.aspx?product_id=703525&cat_id=77
http://www.msicomputer.co.uk/Images/Products/ProductImages/LargeImage/7100Platinum.jpg
The yellow plastic surrounds that support the JUSB1, JUSB2 and JUSB3 USB connector pins on the motherboard are missing. The connectors I'm talking about are the three smaller yellow blocks you can see lined up in a row. This fault seems to make it far too likely that the pins will snap at some point in the future (lack of support), or that the USB cables may be attached incorrectly (no keying). Has anyone else experienced this problem? Can anyone tell me how best to proceed to resolve this issue?

As mentioned, you'd be hard pressed to plug them in the wrong way, but if they are separate, you'd still have to sort them out anyway.
They look purty 'n all but it is nothing to worry about. It's not like there is a lot of movement in your case.
So you're saying that the connectors are just the standard jumper blocks like the pic below?
This does not surprise me, since I am in the PCB industry so I see things like this happen all the time. Not to make excuses or try to minimize it but sometimes, for one reason or another there could be a shortage of parts based on avalability from the part vendor. Perhaps even there might have been a defect in a shipment of connectors.
It really is nothing to be concerned about, I'd be bummed, but not enough to go through the hassle of returning the board based on that.
As for aicjofs comment about building boards years ago and it being a new thing, is true, I still see the old style on other boards still.

  • K8N SLi Platinum USB keyboard boot issues

Hello, I have a K8N SLi Platinum connected via an Aten US221 USB switch (http://www.aten-usa.com/?product&cat=804&Item=US221) and a Kensington USB hub to a Logitech MX518 mouse and a Logitech multimedia pro keyboard. I use this to connect the same two input devices to two computers and toggle. Previously I used a keyboard to each, with a Dell PS/2 used on the MSI motherboard.
The problem is that the MSI motherboard fails to detect the keyboard every other boot or so. It doesn't matter if I unplug the Aten switch, the USB hub or even connect it directly to the USB root hub. The only thing that solves it to restart the MSI computer over and over until it decides to start working. And I need the keyboard since I have a bootloader (GRUB) that I select which OS to boot with. The switch and keyboard works without a hitch on an older Dell computer which is also connected in tandem.
Since I need both mouse and keyboard on a single wire I cannot use a USB-to-PS/2 connector. I've found several posts here which suggests this motherboard is buggy, if that's the case shouldn't MSI issue some sort of BIOS patch?
    Sincerely, Martin "xarragon" Persson

    Might work.
I don't like the inconsistency you describe: working sometimes and after a lot of reboots. Would you say your system parts, please. Troubleshooting this in your end must include finding a situation where it never works, and when it always work. For example, if you don't have the mouse connected at all, if you don't use the hub, etc.
Not saying motherboards can't be damaged, specially port end, but the hub thing is a more likely culprit.

  • Very slow USB on K8N SLI Platinum & Windows XP SP2

    Hi!
I.e. deleting a folder with small 6000 files (all together they have ~50MB) from USB device lasts according to Windows about 100 minutes.
I've got K8N SLI Platinum with BIOS version 3.70, Windows XP SP2 with all updates and some recent nVidia nForce driver (however I'm not sure which version exactly).
In "Device manager" it looks like the USB driver is from Microsoft from year 2001. Are there some new drivers or something that can help to increase USB performance?
    Thanks in advance

Usb's as stick say can't be compared to drives attached to a ide controller.
But you can check to make sure it's running at 2.0 speed like this.
If you look in device manager - on the view on menu - select "view devices by connection" .
Then expand the tree down to USB Enhanced (EHCI) and see if the "disk" is attected to this controller.
If it is you running usb2.0.
Here you see Verbatim Stor'n Go Usb 2.0 thumbdrive attached to the Standard Enhanced EHCI Controller (Usb 2.0)
The other circle shows a bluetooth device runnings as usb 1.1 and attached to the Standard OHCD Controller (Usb 1.1)
An other thing that slows it down is that cache is disabled ("optimized for quick removal") .

  • Can't open BIOs Set-up, K8N SLI Platinum, after re-flash

I used the USB Bio flash tool from the forum to re-flash the BIOs on my K8N SLI Platinum board to the latest BIOS from the MSI site, specs below.
After the re-flash, which seemed to go okay, I cleared the CMOS (turned off and unplugged computer, pushed the clear cmos button for about a minute), and re-booted.
I get a checksum error, no floppy found. I don't have a floppy drive in any case. But then I am unable to enter the bios. Pushing delete at boot gets me a screen that's blank, save for a cursor in the upper left corner. I can't enter anything from there, ESC key doesn't do anything. So I have to reboot.
I can get to the POST screen and pressing F1 allows the system to start and get to Windows, which seems to run okay. System shows that the new BIOS is installed. I just can't get into it to re-set to default settings.
If I turn off the computer, I get the checksum error again and in Windows clock and date have to be reset. But if I just reboot I just have to go through the no floppy found, then push f1 to get back to windows which has retained settings.
I tried  doing the flash procedure again and got same result. I haven't tried flashing back to the old BIOs yet. MSI's site only lists the most recent BIOs, my preference would be to try a different one, but not as old as the 2005 version that was on there.
Hopefully someone can tell me something obvious that I'm missing here.

I'd also like the RAM to run at at least 333, rather than the 200 something it runs at with this BIOS.
Check this with CPU-Z at "memory tab" ==> http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
BIOS post screen info can be incorrect., or current older BIOS by 200MHz it may means 400DDR In all cases its cosmetics,
the way of showing real of effective freq. can be changed in future version.
Also with four sticks it should be shown as either 333 or 166, not 200 or 400
Best check with CPU-Z how they are running

It may now be possible to put something faster in there, but I don't know that for sure. But the 4000+ should improve performance a bit.
Such old CPU's can't be found easy in present days, also its not good investing to invest in old stuffs.
You want W7 and such, changing to the best CPU wont improve much the performance in overall..
Soon or later you have to change it, then this and eventually "newest" CPU which you gonna get will became useless.

  • MSI K8N SLI Platinum vs 1.5TB Western Digital

    Hi Everyone,
I have recently been having some issues with my K8N SLI platinum and hoping I could get some help on resolving the issue.
For the past 2 years i have been running the machine with multiple SATA drives (160GB{boot} and 300GB) and have now tried to add an additional 1.5TB WD and have encountered some problems. If i put my 1.5TB into a USB enclosure and then connect it to my machine it is recognized perfectly and I am able to write and read from the drive, However if i put it into my machine as a secondary HDD my computer fails to boot.
First when i put the drive in my computer no longer boots to windows. It gets to post and loads the drives (including the new drive) and then wont go any further. PC seems to stall and wont allow me to get to the BIOS.
I boot up the machine without the drive connected and go into the BIOS and then reconnect the drive. If i do a HDD Scan on SATA3 then the drive will be recognized (however capacity is only 136GB).
My first thoughts were that it was a bios related issue so I have updated the Bios to the latest (3.C according to LiveUpdate) and am still having the same issue. Im not really sure where to go from now.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for your time.
    Tim

Hello! Please say what your system looks like. Include what PSU you are using.
    Try a different cable.
Jumper the disk to SATA 1.
Try the disk in a different system.

  • K8N-SLI Platinum strange behaviour

    Hi there
Apart from the northbridge making a weird noise sometimes when the motherboard is on it's side (i.e. tower case standing upright), the motherboard started behaving strangely on saturday
first the computer refused to find my network, always assigning a local ip, so i tried rebooting the router a few times, and then checked my other computer which is connected to the router fine
then i tried to play a game and noticed the sound had gone, and then the game kept quitting barely after i started it so i gave that up
then, after i had to move the mouse between this one and another computer, the usb ports (all of them, no matter whether through pci card or on motherboard, the mouse stopped working
throughout all of this i rebooted many times.
i finally gave up in the evening, and the next morning on a whim i turned the computer on and everything was fine, what's going on?!?! is this linked to the northbridge at all? i've monitored all the fans and temps and all are normal and running constantly ( cpu never above 40c)
is the motherboard losing it, or maybe the power supply (all voltages seem normal too...)

Possible suggestions are as follows: Although the manual states that your power supply should be 450w or above i think that with your PSU your fairly border line. Remember that your psu will only draw the power that it requires and as soon as you start putting 256 Mb graphics cards and upgrading to more ram it is using even more resources and can cause your system to have all sorts of dramas and Re-boots.With your network connection problems this could be due to either network problems in your area which BT or your telephone provider can help you with or as i have recently found out.. too many net work connections that may conflict with each other.Go to your controll panel,Network and internet connections then network connections you should have your broadband or dial up connection listed. If you have more than one connection listed and for instance you dont use LAN (local area connection) Networking then you will have to uninstall this connection and disable all Lan options from the Bios i.e nVidia Mac LAN, nVidia Mac LAN ROM, Marvell Gigabit LAN, Marvell Gibyte rom.A possible other prob may be to disable your IEEE 1394 connection from the bios as i had similar problems to yours but am now okay. I am not saying any of these are related directly to your problems however they are possibilities which you may like to try. Please note also that your USB problems can be solved by using the latest Bios update (which i personally have never had any problems with) but may be risky if you have no idea how to flash your bios. My advice on this would be to read the moderators (Bas..i think) instructions as to how to do this or as he suggests unistall all your motherboards usb drivers that were installed from the disk provided by your Motherboard Manafacturer, Re-boot and let windows re-install its own USB drivers which certainly worked for me.

  • Difference between K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI and K8N-SLI Platinum

Hey guys.... I have one question and i hope you can help me.
I'm about to get an MSI SLI Platinum motherboard, but it seems that there are two versions, the K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI and the K8N-SLI Platinum.
What is the real difference between them? As i can see in the manual, the Neo4 version has the additional SATA2 and Gbit LAN controller.
Anyone: Does your K8N-SLI board have 4 or 6 SATA2 ports? and 1 or 2 LANs?
At this picture  http://www.midtdata.dk/asp/index.asp?varernr=K8N-SLI-PLAT&goto=productinfo&mainfunc=link I can see that there are 6 blue SATA connectors (lower right corner), and 2 LAN ports left to the LPT port... But the description says 4 SATA and 1 LAN, and so says the manual.
To all owners of this mobo:  Does this picture look like your K8N-SLI Platinum or does it look like your K8N Neo4 Platinum/SLI ?

  • Is the Hiper Type- R 580 modular PSU compatible with MSI K8N SLI Platinum?

Hey guys, i just recently bought a Hiper Type R 580w PSU after my old PSU went bad.
I installed the new PSU a few hours ago and came across a problem, nothing shows up on screen.
When i turn on the computer, the green light is constantly on including my dvd/rw light.
I double checked everything were connected properly and everything seemed to be connected properly.
The cpu's fan are running properly including the graphics cards and the case's fan but i can't pinpoint whats causing the the green activity light to light constantly including the dvd/rw.
I also tried resetting CMOS but it didn't fix the problem.
So now i'm starting to wonder if it's to do with compatibility issues between the Hiper Type R PSU and my K8N SLI Platinum motherboard.
So i just wanted to know if the Hiper Type R 580 PSU is compatible with the K8N SLI platinum?
I would grately appreciate any assistance.

    In short no.
The Hiper Type- R 580 does NOT have a -5V supply line
Although the -5V requirement has been removed from some MSI designs, the MSI page for the K8N SLI Platinum http://msicomputer.co.uk/Products.aspx?product_id=703525&cat_id=77 states:
    Quote
    MSI Reminds You...
    • These two connectors (JPWR1 & JPWR2) connect to the ATX power supply and have to work together to ensure stable operation of the mainboard.
    • Power supply of 450 watts (and above) is highly recommeded for system stability.
    • For ATX 12V power connection, it should be greater than 18A.
    • For this model, you must use the power supply that with a -5V pin supply.

  • So, is a -5V pin supply still required for MSI K8N SLI Platinum or not ???

I am looking to buy a new custom made computer. I want the MSI K8N SLI Platinum motherboard for it. The problem is that the non-USA page claims that it requires the -5V pin supply. I have read many threads on this same topic, but havent found a definitve answer.
Is the -5V rail still needed or not ???
I read somewhere that USA models dont require it, as its not mentioned on the USA site. Well my one will most probably be from Taiwan.....
Is there a check, through which I can confirm whether the motherboard my local hardware store is selling, requires a -5V pin supply or not???
lastly, is that a specific model number, from which onwards, the requirement is no longer needed ????
    thanx in advance

I agree with SAB only because mine has been rock solid for quite some time.  If I could afford it, I would have purchased SAB's PC Power & Cooling 510 model.
The only other model that seems to have the -5v rail are the OCZ psu.  However, I have noticed a lot of users with tagan's and have yet to see someone complain about this psu.  Im running the 12v rail as a single rail at 30a...you can experiment with the dual rails and it will adjust to the need of your mobo up to 20a on each rail but then the other rail gets only 10a (at least I think thats how it works).
The tagan 480w u22 was built for the future:
    1.  has a 20/24 pin main power connector - shielded
    2.  a 4/8 pin cpu power connector - shielded
    3.  2 - 6pin vga connectors - shielded
    4.  4 - sata hdd connectors
    5.  Whisper quiet - you just dont hear it
    6.  12v rail at 30a - peak load at startup to 35a for 60 seconds
    7.  70% to 73% efficiency rating
Is it enough juice?  It seems to me that the manufacturers have realized that pretty soon we will have to purchase $500 psu's just to keep up.  So IMO, the manufacturers seem to be getting the point.  The new 90nm AMD chips take less power than the 130nm chips...and the new 7800gt video cards take up less power than the 6800gt video cards.  In the future, AMD will be coming out with a 65nm chip, which will need even less power.
So I think Im right at the sweet spot with the 12v@30a and its also flexible enough to switch to a dual rail system if I need that feature in the future.  Tagan does make a 530w and 580w psu too, but they are not as quiet and you only get 2 more amps on the 12v rail as you go up the line.  Just my 2 cents.

  • K8N SLI Platinum Won't boot...

    Hello!
Yesterday i got my computer parts, i slowly assemblied it and read all the instructions.
    The parts was:
    MSI K8N SLI Platinum
    AMD Athlon 64 3500+ 2.2GHz Socket 939 (Boxed)
    Asus GeForce 7800GT 256MB GDDR3 2xDVI-I
Corsair TWINX Xpert 3200C2 DDR 1024MBC
Tagan 420W PSU(I didn't get any info from the reseller about me needing atleast 450W, but it booted so im happy)
    Samsung SpinPoint P120S 250GB SATA2.
It booted and i was happy, i installed all drivers from the cds and installed a game and it ran smooth.
I looked up on nvidia.com and saw that there was a newer driver for my graphics card so i downloaded them and got asked to reboot my computer and so i did.
But it didnt get any further than the re, since it didn't boot up...
All the fans are running in the computer, the memory display started and displayed info.
The screen was dead and by pressing numlock repeatedly on my keyboard i noticed it didn't work either.
I've tried to change spot on both the SATA disc and the Graphics Card. I've tried to reset cmos by holding the button.
And now im out of ideas
    Thanks in advance /Hugge

I had it at first, but when i moved my gfx-card i removed it.. Should i connect it again?
Edit: Ok now i saw what use it has, i will connect it and i'll be back in a few..

Kinda sounds like what happens to my 2 machines (a Mac & PC) that share a monitor, USB keyboard & USB printer through a KVM switch....
On occasion the the Mac's CD tray will pop open on it's own while it's booting if the PC is already on. Someone on the Apple formus told me it was a spurious "nonsense" command generated through the USB connection of the switch while it's trying to "sync up".
While it's a little irritating, it's nothing to worry about.

  • [Resolved] No boot with K8N sli Platinum & AMD 64 X2 3800+

    Hye,
I've received these new stuff last night (everything is good until here) :
    - Antec Sonata II 450W
    - MB MSI K8N SLI Platinum
    - Proc. AMD 64 X2 3800+
    - GC Sapphire X800 XL 256Mo
I've assembled all and turned it on... No bip... but all the fans are turning... and the screen says "No signal" and becomes black ( and me    )
    Can someone help me? Please?
On the MSI site, I also found this :
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_cpu_support_detail.php?UID=641&kind=1
Maybe the proc. and the Motherboard are not compatible? Has someone already tried this combinaison (MB+Proc.)?
    My Thanks in advance.

I will ask the sellers if they can update the Mobo for me.
But with the last version of the bios, will the mobo accept the dual-core with this proc. AMD 64 X2 3800+?
And if it's not possible I'll change the mobo.
    Thanks .................................. again.
Pretty much any SLI motherboard supports the X2 3800. MSI is just really pathetic sometimes. So, I had the Abit AN8 SLI before and their latest BIOS (17) supports all X2 CPUs. But Im sure most other brands support them too.

  • K8N SLI Platinum - cd-in to digital ou

    Hello
I just built my new system with MSI K8N SLI Platinum mobo. I can't get sound from cd-in to be heared from digital out. I had an option on Soundstorm to do this, Live! 24-bit seems to lack this option. Can this be done? Can I got sound from inputs mixed with digital out signal? I got DVB card and would like to hear something on my amplituner without connecting another cable to it.

Nope. This card is even worse. Analog inputs and outputs just doesn't work in digital-out mode. It's insane, but it looks like a feature, not a bug...

This topic has been moved to Overclockers & Modding Corner.
    K8N SLI PLATINUM QUESTIONS

Okay  finally i overclocked a bit (i am not really in the overclocking business)
With Bios defaults settings without touching anything else i raised FSB to 220 MHz resulting to a 2.2 GHz CPU operating frequency a nice 10% overclock    (of course  i have disabled spread spectrum in bios) reaching that way the Athlon 64 3500+ .
Every thing seemed rock - stable!!..
However, when i tried to shut down the machine,  i got a nice BSOD (Black screen of death) HDD light remained on . As far as i know the board is locking PCI-E , so graphics card and SATA drive should not causing the problem here.
So i raised the CPU core voltage up to 5% and oualla!! Rock stable ( 3 Hours Prime 95)
... did not try to rise chipset voltage or memory voltage (is set to 2.7 volts by memory SPD) since this was not necessary in my case. Might try some more overclocking in the future but right now i am happy with it and just will sit back and enjoy
There is a guy who succeeded in rising FSB to 358!!! Mhz with this board (well almost) he advices just not to enable Aggressive memory timings...
    here
Anyway, Thanks for the tips guys
    Best Regards,
